I like Albright. He is still learning how to play in back. But his verstaility helps out, and I am fine with atht selection. HE was a good possibility to make to original 23.

Davis had some injury problems late last season that ended his season a bit early. Wasn't fit early on over fall/winter....
Davis will be in the mix for the next Cup. He finally received som National team experience over the past 1-2 years and is building a resume for himself to try to make the team in 4 years. Needs to produce and stay healthy....and it wouldn't hurt to stop bouncing around teams in the league. Talented left side player who should be in the mix in 4 years.
Skip....I am well aware as I said in my post who is and isn't a space player or target palyer etc....but sometimes if another player is much better regardless of that you take him.
Eddie Johnson shouldn't see the field unless he is second half substitute to try to rejuvenate the team in a tie or losing game. He has great talent and good size speed etc...but his work rate and concentration and often times first touch are not what they need to be at that level. Problem is...do you start him over Wolff...? And he very well might.
-
I have been trying to keep the posts mostly just SLU.....but since this thread is up.
I would take Twellman over Ching and Ching over Wolff.
Josh Wolff continues to have secret incriminating pictures of Bruce Arena....just kidding to make the point of my opinion. And I will leave it at that. (I realize the mixture of having target forwards vs guys who play better in space etc....)
Arena said himself that if Ralston was fit he would be on there without hesitation. He loves Ralston.
Had Noonan been a bit more fit, ....liked his chances. But with Convey, Beasley, O'Brien on left side...
Noonan, Twellman, Klein, Ralston all on 13 player alternate list.
None of the defender selections surprised me. I like Albright....but Lewis is already one converted player he wants to limit how many of those he chooses.
Thought Twellman would have been there and was hoping for Albright and Noonan.
I would say Josh Wolff has to be the disappointment for me....maybe Olsen too, to a lesser extent. But he can defend better than some others.
There always seem to be one Reyna backlash post on internet boards. Reyna sits just fine with me.

If you also think Notre Dame is way above Georgetown in Academics you too would be mistaken. They are in the same class academically.

Early this week sometime.....maybe even Monday...this week you shall know.

It's not the case. More to this, ...all I will say.

Thx.
...I think you will be very pleased with Ream at SLU. And Aranda if he is still coming. ...there will be opportunities for newcomers. ...I wouldn't worry about Guffey starting...won't happen...and if Gasporovic doesn't pick it up a lot, he won't be either. Benne and Angus should be though. ...As I said before Aranda is th best local recruit in the class imo, but Ream is also a good player. ...and we'll have to see about some of the out of towners....looking at the CA kids for the most impact.
Thx for the report.
-
It had been reported many times Aranda was committed to SLU, local media and other soccer media....he was also looking at some Ivy league schools as well....I am assuming it is just a matter of time before hearing something. ...but the wait is curious....he is a Scott Gallagher/DeSmet central midfielder, highly skilled, controls midfield, a tenacious player, a leader/captain, wins 50/50 balls...a very calm but skilled and tough player, highly respected in soccer circles. Not a tall kid, 5'10 maybe...but physically strong. ....some have compared him with Cooper McKee...a comparison I don't make at all...he is more skilled than McKee, and unlike McKee has been a midfielder in hs, while McKee played a lot of forward. Aranda can create and finish as well. As with any kid, how immediate of an impact he would make...probably pretty quick...and would be a team leader his last 2-3 years at SLU.
I would be unaware of any changes about his coming to SLU.
-
BTW Balls....in case you didn't hear recently a couple of weeks back... Joe Germanese is transferring to Duke, a good choice for him. He will help them immediately(doesn't have to sit outa year due to Vandy dropping men's soccer.) Similar school to Vandy...and Stanford another possibility has been down the past two seasons....makes sense for what he wants with school and soccer...had considered IU as well.
Like many others I am awaiting an announcemnet regarding Josh Aranda signing with SLU...imo easily the best local recruit for SLU this season. We shall see.
-
Unfortunately no Balls, please give a report...I am leaving town Fri night and won't be able to make Sat game.

I painfully read each post in this thread...lol....wow....where to begin....
First let me say that Bob Warming went to NCAA's in each of his 4 seasons, went to the Final Four and won 3 conference titles. Danny Donigan has won 4 conference titles, and has made the NCAA quarterfinals twice, and NCAA 3rd round. I think those accomplishments at a school with lesser commitment to Athletics during that time than many of its opponents speaks for itself. While on the topic of coaches...one must ALWAYS take into consideration many factors....did the coach get a new facility built under his or her watch? That should be positively reflected on them. How many professional players have they developed under their watch? Again ..another example of evaluating a coach....etc...let's move on for now...
I am a bit surprised and disappointed in Torch and Sheltiedave...I must say...first, we all need to stop the ..."Well, when I was in school..." ...when I was a kid we walked to school uphill backwards both ways barefoot in snow. etc....
First let's go back to Joey Clarke...he was fired for having one losing season....immediately the next season, new coach Bob Warming receives SLU's first ever full time paid assistant coach, among other help to the program. Imagine it, major D-1 school....mid 1990's with ZERO full time paid assistants. Laughable isn't the word. ...behind the times yes. So please stop with the when I was in school....
Next...look around the country...do a little homework in recent history...this is NOT 30 years ago...the rest of the country can play soccer....too. With all of this talk of Stemler to SLU or Marquette etc...older people on here will remember when Marquette was successful under Al McGuire and Hank Raymonds etc...and they recuited MANY NY kids city kids etc...back then...with McGuire's ties etc...guess what happened to them? The Big East conference among many other things...conference ball...and many of those kids went to Syracuse and the like after that....and recruiting was changed, a lot tougher.....I use this as one example because people don't understand you cannot say SLU soccer and people will fall over at your feet. NO. Does St. Louis have excellent youth soccer, yes. Is there great depth yes. However you can't just throw a good local high school soccer player on SLU or any other major D-I team and expect great things. Why? Because facts are...that a handful or more of local kids are GOOD enough for Major D-I....many go to middle of road D-I etc....SLU needs to recruit top local kids...not just ALL local kids. And find other pipelines....i.e. the club kids from California...that team was started by an ex St. Louisan and formerly coached by Kevin Grimes(if you don't know who Kevin Grimes is...then don't bother posting about college soccer here until you do) or Donigan's pro soccer connections with Hammes, Walls, etc...and so on....or Texas.
Look at the good teams, and notice that a lot of their kids are regionally based....which shows that most of the country has good local soccer....STL is in the upper end mix of youth talent...but no better than NJ/NY, Texas, CA, Mid-Atlantic, MD, Va etc....and more and more states are getting better. It is much better than hoops for recruiting local players sure. more depth and more high end players. But it isn't St. Louis or bust either.
Look at this class coming in....I am excited for Ream, Aranda etc...some of the others are non-scholarship players who will be hard pressed to be more than role players(I am speaking of the local kids not the other ones. Is this a good class, yes. I want to hear Aranda's name soon to complete it.
I don't have a major problem with the results two years ago....I do have a problem with this past year's results. I am confident the results will be much improved this season.
Donigan recruited a lot of players under Warming's time and the results are above...and as a head coach, his results are above.....Nobody is above criticsm.....but to say that Donigan should be gone after the past two seasons...I would not agree with that sentiment. I would also look at the local St. Louis kids who "got away" from Donigan and see how they are actually doing before criticism. Most haven't done much, a few have.
SLU has lack chemistry in its play the past couple of seasons....and that has been their problem. It is being addressed.
If Donigan fails to have a good season this year, I would be ready to visit the topic at that time. I am objective and fair....he has earned the right to be the coach this season...obviously if the team fails this year and next, he won't be around after that....and he knows that. But you have to look at results and causes of those results, and all factors when evaluating and where programming is going....etc...
SLU can be a major soccer power....which means top 25 yearly these days...and has been for much of Donigan's assistant and head time at SLU....and likely to return to that perch next season. And it is MUCH tougher to do today then 5-10 years ago let alone 30 years ago. No doubt about that. As I said, I am all in favor of someone else brought in if he continues to struggle. If anything I am objective on this. But why not hope for the best this season, because he deserves to coach this year, and enjoy a game.

I will be unable to attend Sat...please give report...wish it was Fri instead.
As far as fandom etc...SLU fans could learn a thing or two from IU's fans, and also their success over recent past history. I have no problem with fun jabs at schools. But if you don't have a healthy respect for IU soccer...
And it doesn't have anything to do with game rowdiness etc...it is one thing to be rowdy, clever, poke fun...etc...but in conversation, IU is what SLU aspires to be right now....more consistent and a notch above.
As for MLS....sure ideally anywhere near downtown would be wonderful and a first choice.......and while I am not a big fan of it being across the river....as long as it is across the river as in very close to downtown, and not say 30 minutes out...I have no problem with it....people need to get over the IL v MO thing...and welcome the area as in a Philly/S Jersey....are a part of Philly as example.....the near East side needs something positive to expand the downtown area attractions beyond gambling boats and strip clubs.
And yes all of the above fields mentioned Sportport etc...are disastrous at best.
-
First of all....the IU sucks stuff isn't what I was hoping for ....for people involved in this new fan group. I have MUCH higher expectations for cleverness and class.
Second....any MLS team or future team with plans of new stadium would have to build a MINIMUM 20k seater....25-30k may even be more like it.
If STL received a team...they could play virtually anywhere for a very very brief 1-2 year period etc....while constructing a new stadium. Who cares where that would be??? What matters is building a stadium, for the long permanent home. I don't understand on all these forums etc...what about SLU? etc....The team would play at a temporary site for a very brief time. It isn't a big deal.
The ONLY long term solution is a soccer specific stadium 20-30k seats....end of story....and temproarily they could play in someon'e backyard(kidding of course) for all I care.
I have doubts they will get the 08 team...though very possible....and they may have to wait a few more years.....but it is only a matter of time for STL to get a team...will it be in two years or 5-6 ...? We'll see.
-
Nobody said SLU was scum etc....blah blah ...all in your head...it is all psychologically in your head. And the head of a few. Most of the time when somebody comes here to flame from another school....I ignore them, and they go away.....occasionally and rarely I may challenege them, but usually prefer their quiet and quick exit. And ignoring is best way.
When people come for other means...I enjoy other fans from other schools when they come in peace. And you wil see that I usually engage them from time to time from many different schools.
You are obsessed over Marquette and Mizzou...in a negative way...and that is fine and that is your deal....but it isn't mine...
Look at all of the many many times a Mizzou thread comes up...most of the time it is childlike stuff with no substance...so I ignore...sometimes when it is more worthwhile about players, teams etc...I will chime in with thoughts. Unfortunately most are not high quality threads.
Notice how I posted about U of I's Sergio McClain....and the rercruiting region for SLU etc...the other day....No wild responses from anyone...but had I posted something regarding one of the other schools, it would have received at minimum...."This isn't the ...fill in your school" board.....or some sort of flame.
It's really too bad. (sigh.)

I decided to re-read the thread Roy to see if my opinion would change...out of thouroughness and objectivity.....it hasn't. I found no need to post on this thread or many other Marquette threads. I only posted to point out to you something from a recent past issue. As far as posters coming over....that stuff happens all the time....on every message board. You have to be kidding me. My point is....you posted in this thread ripping these people and that negativity and lack of objectivity will carry with you to future posts, or to other posters...yeah all those (insert team name here) fans suck...I hate them, that school etc...arrogant bleeps....blah blah.....and I am wiling to bet there are good and bad fans at every school. ......point is...it isn't accurate in this case.
A guy comes, posts an article relevant to SLU fans as a courtesy....end of story....then a few posts occurred about that school etc...as I am sure some Marquette fans are lurking to read this board for Stemler info...and they respond....I recognize MU88 from many past posts on this board btw......now if they came as flame jerks like that one Flyerphan or whatever his name is...that would be another story and I wouldn't have posted one thing.
I cannot possibly understand how you could have made your first post in this thread in the manner you did considering the previous posts in this thread.
And you aren't the only fan on here with dislike for Marquette, Missouri and a few other schools...so I am sure some fans would feel the same as you....doesn't make them accurate or correct, or well informed. Most however don't have this issue.
I can guarantee you ...you have never nor will you see me post a blanket statement over a topic instead of examining individual parts...etc...and in this instance I saw no issues, or interest, or need to post...excpt when you did to point out an issue.
Actually it would have been better of me to actually post to thank the guy for dropping off the article.
-
I can't remember if I posted this or not....but Indiana defeated the World Champion Under 17 Mexico team 2-0 in a wild raucous atmosphere spring game which was attended by almost 6000.
...btw...MLS Commissioner Garber said this week that he is still in talks with investors for an expansion St. Louis team, and it is very clear and understood that they would be building a new stadium in exchange for the rights to a team.
-
These guys came n here because both Marquette and SLU have been recruiting the same player. It is off-season etc...so somebody stops by to probably read this board for info on Stemler, ....that person has a subscription article and posts it as a courtesy. Simple....end of discussion.
I post all the time on a wide arrange of topics....when I speak of other topics and other teams....it doesn't get the attention as would a Mizzou, Marquette etc....I still don't really get it nor care...I suppose because SLU and Marquette played in the same conference for a while and are both jesuit schools...that has sparked some sort of animosity....or perhaps it was some sort of personal experience.
Nobody respeonded to my post regarding Arkansas and Patrick Beverly yesterday....nobody respeonds to posts about Georgetown or BC or whomever.....only a few schools that some posters don't like for various reasons.
I posted some Philly stuff a while back, but only Taj was interested....etc...Only the Bay Area Billiken and Alameda Bob seem interested in the Bay area stuff....and so on.....there isn't an animosity.
Just because I don't bash Mizzou or Marquette or whoever else on this board it apparently bothers you. I speak objectively on here...in fact I didn't quite understand the Acker recruitment for Marquette when they need an inside player and an immeidate shooter....now with one spot left they can't have both. And I didn't understand when B-law thought Marquette would be well serviced with Amoroso as an inside player this year. .....
Nobody seemed interested in discussing Shan Foster or Carroll from Vanderbilt....this week....etc...so therefore the point is for you and for some other posters, objectivity isn't allowed when it comes to some teams you don't like.
Sure there may be things or decisions or people I don't like at Mizzou...but I don't feel the need for the dollar signs or misery child like posts....it isn't what I do.
I don't have to do cartwheels on this board to be a Billiken fan...and because I don't just sit here and flame or be a negative troll either...it sits just fine with me.

-
Actually I don't make four. But the guy comes here and posts a pay subscription article for free about a recruit SLU is trying to get....perhaps...thanks would have been a more appropriate respeonse?
I merely posted to illustrate that under zero circumstances you can handle any objectivity regarding some teams....and I in particular chose this one from one of our previous discussion to further illustrate that point.
We'll just agree to disagree. I don't like the childish, boorish, acros the board juvenile hall comments as opposed to individual base objectivity on pretty much anything. Or writing Missouri with dollar signs or when people spell it misery....stuff like that regardless of school is something I expect from the teeneagers. I think it lacks maturity and education. just my opinion.
....nothing wrong with being funny and joking around....all for it...but too many angry, across the board flamers out there for no reason to encourage them.
You are entitled to your off base comments and opinions. Bbut think about it....somebody comes to this board and posts a subscription recruiting article as a head's up to SLU fans about a possible recruit.....other posts ensue respectfully...and you are one of few with any problems or issues...based only that it is a school that for reasons unbeknown to many ...you don't like. These people weren't nasty, arrogant, high and mighty etc...
I am not going to change my objectivity when I post...so call it what you want...you can actually be gasp a SLU fan and be objective. When warranted I make positive or negative comments on anything, when not, I don't.
-
>three marquette fans in one string so worried about how we
>view marquette that they apparently monitor our board on a
>regular basis and feel the need to tell us how superior they
>are. they obviously feel threatened.
>
>thanks marquette fans.
Ahh Roy...you are finding actual Marquette fans to fight with...good step up for you. The first guy simply posted an updated recruiting article on Marquette. Then after people posted anti-Marquette sentiments, the follow ups were nothing more than providing facts and links etc...to the discussion.
Somehow it all gets lumped in that they are arrogant high and mighty etc.....when in actuality it is YOU who has some sort of strange infatuation with that school. People post all the time on every other school without incident. And no Marquette isn't alone in your anti-sentiments.....these guys were/are obviously Marquette fans, but they didn't come to flame the board.
Whether it is Mizzou, Marquette etc...a lack of objectivity clouds thoughts. And that's too bad.
-
Patrick Beverly of Marshall High School that eliminated DM's Edwardsville team this year, committed to Arkansas.
And Sergio McClain accepted head coaching position of new ABA expanasion team in Peoria
-
tough to beat that one. He wasn't going to be the man over stud Shan Foster at Vandy.

>courtside and slu72, you are wrong on juco. there is a huge
>difference between a lot of privates like slu and marquette
>vs the big public schools with far more majors that enable

Exactly my point....SLU is NOT the only school with challenges when it comes to incoming frosh, transfers or jucos....there are many others out there as well...and Roy was kind enough to name one. Thanks Roy.
I tire of SLU is Harvard on here. Plenty of other schools with rules and standards and regulations have success on and off the court.....that was my point. People need to stop crying and making excuses.....I was getting tired of 68's repeat posting of this so I vented out to him, nothing personal....I do not hold the belief that SLU is higher and mightier than most when it comes to recruiting.
Marquette had a back-up plan
