Soccer is not American Football, not in this country.  It never will be during our lifetimes, if ever.

I'm not against Soccer.  St. Louis can and should have both, American Football and Soccer.  A major metropolitan area should have both.

We haven't mentioned the NBA, of which the Hawks left St. Louis in 1968.  The ABA Spirits were in St. Louis from 1974 to 1976.  I'm not a big NBA fan.  I'd take the NFL ahead of the NBA. Others might differ there.  But the NFL, even with all its issues, is still the #1 spectator sport in America.

MLS and soccer show great popularity relative to traditional sports in the US in recent sports surveys. The TV rating numbers for soccer in the under 35 age metric are good. Also, if you combine the TV ratings from the English and Spanish broadcasts, they are respectable across all ages. The step-change in soccer in this country will come when MLS pulls off the training wheels (aka salary cap and limited DP, TAM, and other rules) and permits the ambitious owners to compete with the top 5 leagues in Europe to fill rosters. The new media contracts are under negotiation, and they are expecting the rights to the annual 48-team MLS/Liga MX to substantially drive up the value, which we hope will be invested into new roster rules. It may be another decade or so, but MLS is being positioned to eventually compete with MLB and NBA to be the 2nd most popular league in the US.

I guess it depends on your definition of the word significant......

Just to cherry pick one example:  For example, in the large UK study, most outbreak cases were associated with an index case (initial case) in a staff member.46

It seems to be a pretty common theme that adults are more likely to bring covid to school and spread it than kids.  I'd argue that this is why many countries are not forcing masking on kids.

Again, from what I've read, kids are certainly able to get and spread covid but they don't generally get sick or spread it in a significant manor.

This is my last post on this topic forever, but I am concerned that your attempted rebuttal above exemplifies the fake news issue spreading so much misinformation today. I cited you peer-reviewed, highly-powered, and well-controlled studies establishing that children acquire and spread the virus at the same rate or higher than adults (albeit typically asymptomatically), and you respond with basically an irrelevant fact that has no association with the infection and transmissibility data.

  3. 15 minutes ago, Billiken Rich said:

Kids are not a significant vector for spreading covid anywhere in the world.  If you've seen data that shows otherwise I'd love to see it.

Your information is wrong. I prefer facts from scientist. Here is the explanation: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/transmission_k_12_schools.html#:~:text=Similar to adults with SARS,from COVID-19.  "Studies that have systematically tested children and adolescents, irrespective of symptoms, for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection (using antigen or RT-PCR assays) or prior infection (through antibody testing) have found their rates of infection can be comparable, and in some settings higher, than in adults."

The peer-reviewed studies are cited if you want to read them.

We are the one of the few countries in the world masking kids.  We didn't mask them for flu season despite the flu being much more deadly to them.  My kids are vaccinated and they are highschool and older.  if I had a 5 year old i'm not sure i'd get in line to get him vaccinated because there is almost zero risk of him getting sick.  \

Given that the vaccines are not great at stopping transmission I just don't know what my families vaccination status has to do with anyone but my family.  Go to see the Bills and live your life......or not.  It's got nothing to do with me and mine.....

The masks aren't really about preventing the wearer from getting sick but rather from preventing the spread of the virus, which 100% relies on human hosts to spread and mutate. Without vaccines for kids, this is the only tool available to prevent kids from spreading the vaccine. However, once a person is fully vaccinated the masks admittedly deliver diminishing returns. When properly worn, mask are shown to add between 40 and 50% incremental protection. If you aren't vaccinated at all, that 40-50% protection is significant. If you are double-vaccinated with Moderna or have gotten a booster, that increment is a rounding error.

  5. As we all well know, the vaccines are important and necessary, but they do not provide complete protection. The level of protection they provide is a function of type of vaccine, time since vaccinated, age, exposure level, personal health condition, and other factors.

For someone like me (a fully vaccinated 40 something) and my basketball-crazed son (a fully vaccinated and healthy 15-year-old), the health risks from a breakthrough Covid case are minimal, and therefore we renewed our tickets and will be attending games. By contrast, a breakthrough case for my 77-year-old father who has underlying health conditions could be catastrophic. The reality is that my father is much more representative of most of the SLU season ticket fan base and allowing the unvaccinated and untested in the building presents the biggest risk to this group. The university certainly understands this risk and has implemented vaccine mandates in all other campus facilities. For it not to impose the same safeguards and protections at Chaifetz—already in place at nearby Enterprise Center, Powell, and Fox—is disappointing and shocking. This decision could literally kill longtime fans.

Steve is free to shut this thread down, but I think this is a relevant and important issue for the program and this season. The university has put it's senior fan base in a difficult position to accommodate the small percentage of people who are unwilling to do their part to help eliminate a community health crisis.

  6. I will give the naysayers the benefit of the doubt and assume they struggled in their science and statistics courses and it is not a matter of pure selfishness or ignorance. As we all well know, the vaccines are important and necessary, but they do not provide complete protection. I believe later research and contact tracing determined that the game itself wasn’t the super spreader event. The tracing determined that the spread far more likely occurred in the bars and restaurants the traveling fans visited.

It really doesn't matter. It isn't about super-spreaders. It is about protecting individuals from those who aren't willing to do their part to help stop the spread of a community health crisis. As Charles Barkley put so simply and eloquently, "You get vaccinated to protect those around you, not yourself."

I  can't believe that SLU  will not require some vaccination, or negative w/in 72 hrs test result, to allow people to attend games.  The Blues can do it with twice the attendance.  If that winds up as the final policy I will not be attending any games.  They can sell my seat to an anti-vaxer from north St Louis city or county or Franklin County.

    That policy has to change.

I fully agree. My father has hardly missed a home game over the last 40 years, but he hasn't renewed his season tickets because they haven't instituted a vaccine-check policy like nearly every other major indoor entertainment venue in the city. It is quite shocking considering the university otherwise has a vaccine requirement. I did note that at least one person associate with large funding for the university has tweeted anti mandate stuff, so I wonder if there may be some undue influence.

Sancho’s omission was strange, especially since Bellingham got into the game. I am not very bullish on Foden or Mount, although I am in the minority.

Because of Pulisic, I watched most of Chelsea's games this season. I was a Mount skeptic for a long time, but I was a fan by season's end. He isn't super explosive or flashy, but he has great ball skills, excellent positioning and movement, and really keeps the offense and possession flowing for Chelsea. I do wonder how well that will translate to international play where the players don't get as much time together in their system.

Big day ahead for those interested in the NBA and international soccer. England and Croatia kick off the day at 8:00 am. England has an embarrassment of riches in the attack, including Jadon Sancho who was left off the 23-man roster for the game. Sancho rates either slightly above or below Pulisic, which serves as a good reminder of how far the USMNT has to go in building a complete squad to compete with the world’s top teams.

After the first 5 minutes, this ridiculously valued England team has looked very average. I tend to think English players are always overvalued because nearly all of them (Sancho aside) ply their trade in the league with an abundance of cash to overpay players. I cannot figure how Sancho didn't make the game squad.

Goodwin is aware that the Covid situation ended his chances to be drafted into the NBA this year. I assume he is calculating what is best for him, to start a professional career at a foreign league (and start making money as soon as possible), or to try to maintain his dream of getting drafted by the NBA if he plays an additional year for SLU. In this regard, I  honestly do not think the Covid situation will be that much different next year. If Goodwin wants to keep his dream alive that is his business, personally I would go professional in a foreign league and start making money. A moment always come when dreams have to be set aside.

Again, my opinion only, feel free to disagree.

I wasn't a D1 athlete, but I absolutely loved college and graduated in 3 years. I am now over 20 years into my "9 to 5" professional career and realize it is a exponentially easier to stack another year of work for financial gain than it is to get back those glorious college years, especially if you are big man on campus. Everyone has to make their own decision under their own circumstances, and I don't fault J Good for whatever he decides, but don't underestimate a chance to extend what will almost certainly be some of the best years of his life.

  12. We just became so easy to scout. Pack it in and force us to shoot over you. Guard the drive and give the outside shot to Yuri and Goodwin. Expect Yuri to pass after he penetrates. Quickly close out on Gibson. Play physical with Perkins. Guard French's spin move. Recognize the athleticism of Thatch, Jacobs, and TJ, so force them to beat you with basketball skill.

It today's game where most teams feature 3-5 guys on the court who can consistently make outside shots, we often had just 1 on the court at a time. Knowing this fact, I would have gone 10 deep and played a mix of full and half-court pressure defense all the time to accelerate our strengths and limit everything I described above.

  13. 14 days is CDC recommendation. 10 days is acceptable if no symptoms. 7 days is acceptable if you have a negative test on day 6 or 7. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/quarantine.html

City of St. Louis is still 14 days after last exposure: https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/health/communicable-disease/covid-19/documents/upload/Quarantine-Guidance-for-Contacts.pdf

Does anyone know what date SLU is expecting to be able to re-open the team's activities?

I think this team wins 7 out of ten times against that team, but they don’t run them out of the gym.  That team was damn good.  As much as I love French, the Conklin of the 11-12 season was a better player and overall the frontline on that team was better and deeper with Evans, Ellis and Loe.

Except that Majerus played a double post with a stretch big, and Ford tends to play 4 out and 1 in, which means you are really comparing Loe/Remekun to French/Linsen/Bell and Evans/Ellis to Perkins/Jacobs/Hargrove.

Goodwin is great, and his rebounding is unmatched.  I would rather though have Jett with the ball in his hands in the last minutes of a game than Goodwin.

This we can agree on; there are at least 2 guys on this team I would rather have the ball ahead of Goodwin with the game on the line (Collins, Perkins, and maybe Jacobs). Only Marque Perry and Larry Hughes were as good as Jett at getting a bucket with the game on the line. Goodwin just doesn't have the handle, crossover, or outside shot necessary for that role. Give me Yuri with the ball, Perkins and Gibson on the wings, and Goodwin ready to crash the offensive boards.

    +1

This year’s team is deeper and more talented yes. But the 2011-2012 squad was a better team and I think their defense would feast on this year’s team when guys get into hero ball mode.  As you say, maybe by the end of the year we think differently.

This year's team would run that team out of the gym. Majerus's teams just didn't have enough raw talent and depth.

  17. 15 minutes ago, BilliesBy40 said:

I agree about Evans vs. French, although French is a better fit for this team. But you’re flat out wrong about Goodwin vs. Jett. Goodwin’s stats will make him a top 3 Billiken EVER.

I love Jett, but everyone forgets that Jett didn't even start until his senior season. He was basically a more polished version of Fred Thatch for several years at SLU. He had a great, great senior year, but Goodwin can do so many more things on the court.

  18. 1 minute ago, SluSignGuy said:

I We also had some very bad turnovers.  NC State's defense was good, but Evans, McCall, and Jett teams were much more disciplined.  I still think too many players on the current team go into "hero" ball mode.  This team has many more options than the Evans, McCall, and Jett team, which is fantastic.  But I would say the team where Evans, McCall, and Jett are juniors and Ellis was a senior would beat this team, at least right now.

I respectfully disagree Steve. Yuri is a difference-making point guard with better a/o than anyone on that team.  I would take Yuri over McCall, Goodwin over Jett, Perkins over Ellis, and French over Evans, and this team takes spots 5-10 without any debate. The Majerus team didn't have anywhere near enough talent to hang with this team. I think this team takes 18/20 games against them.

After gobillsgo's post, I did a little research. It would appear very likely that what he says is true. Espn+ has to honor the media rights holder and enforce a blackout. Apparently it's done by looking at your IP address, GPS and even the zip code given when signing up for an account, some of that depending on whether you're using a mobile device, or a desktop/laptop computer.

So I was happy to see your earlier post, but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

I am hopeful as well since FSMW has been dropped from the streaming services. It really just depends whether they signed an exclusive local broadcast deal with FSMW. Being so late in the game, it is possible that the deal isn't exclusive for streaming.

I don't care what he used to be.  He along with Dickie V. are obnoxious and I will not watch any games they are announcing.

Tough crowd here. Bill Walton is an enjoyable, easy-going guy who delights with his constant randomness. Nobody else brings Dickie V's genuine energy and love for the game, plus he is a truly generous and charitable man. Hate the haters, not the media guys who bring positivity.

  21. ESPN+ is a stand alone package for about $5/month. You don't need Hulu, cable, youtubeTV, or any other service to subscribe to it. It is truly the best value in the world for sports viewing. My primary sports interests are college basketball and professional and international soccer; it is amazing how much content ESPN+ offers for those sports.
