Like I said everybody sets screens, we shouldn't be amking such a big deal about it. No one lauds Sloan's screeening efforts because it is expected of him.

If you are suggesting SLU plays closer to a zone you are wrong. Brad plays a variation of a man to man. Each player has a man to guard, the positioning on the floor is irrelevant. If you miss your assignment you miss your assignment and for a guy like Varner who bring nothing to the table athletically he can't make many mistakes on the court. Missing defensive assignments is not good for Freshman much less a guy like Varner. He can't afford to make those mistakes, his play last night did not warrant the minutes he got. It is a big problem that we do not have any other options beside him. But don't tell me Varner is not immune from criticism just cuz he isn't as talented as other players. He has a job to do and when he does not do it he deserves to critsized and his minutes deserve to be scrutinized.

  2. Ross is horrible, it is not BS it is facts. 7 points, great he is a spot up shooter, and sets some screens. His rebounding against a thin exhibition team upfront was poor, in fact Ross jumping ointo the scrum late cost us a couple boards.

His defense was horrendous, it seems he forgot how to play man to man. It was not a lack of athleticism, AIA were not speed demons, Ross could not follow his man amd was out of position several times and we got burned.

Varner is not my "whipping boy." I am concerned one because he is so mediocre and two because it appears he wil get a large amount of playing time. We are hurting the team when he is on the floor for long stretches. Like I said before if he is our first big man option off the bench we are in trouble.

  3. Even so guys do switch on the Bills.

Here is what usually happens, they switch when a guy gets screened, but as soon as the guy can break through the screen the other guys drops bakc on his original man. I don't like permanent switches much either, but help is neede at some points, running back to your original man, and at least being aware of where he is should be second nature to grade school players much less a 5 year college man like Ross. On at least 4 occasions he failed to check back on his original man. Sitting there not guarding the man you switched and not dropping back onb your original man is being on no man's land. When my kids get stuck in no man's land they run laps. It is unacceptable for Ross to play like that. We will get burned in conference if he keeps it up.

  4. I hope Clarke's play was due to jitters. He made at least 3 terrible passes wich resulted in TOs. Just terrible throwaways. Didn't make any shots but has a nice form and range, those will come. Did have that nifty pass on a drive inside.

Fisher was okay. Solid on defense and okay at pg. It just kills me the stupid mistakes he makes. Threw balls away and didn't hustle for a couple loose balls that the AIA kids took away from him. Bryant did the same thing.

Ian had that nice wraparound move that they called a foul on. Just from that I know he can do some things in the paint. Did look lost a couple times in the motion offense.

How many games will Frericks foul out of? Early line at least 7. Has some offensive skill and was willing to bang though.

Izik probably sat because of his ankle, he was not going full speed at any time. When fully healthy he will dominate, shoots the three, drives, and is the best back to the basket guy we have. Needs to be a little more assertive and I still think Brad needs to tweak the offense to get him in more one on one situations.

Sloan would be All American if he could score. He was always the best player on the floor. But he has no offensive game, besides his threes off screens. Just does not grasp inside offensive play. He does get the ball all the time, he will just have to make his Fts because he cannot take it back up with any effectiveness. He was openly pissed at Varners poor play, gotta like that.

Varner was attrocious. Can make some shots, but why is he setting up with his foot on the line? Tries to board but usually just messes up Sloan. Played horribly defensively, failed to switch on his man several times. No excuse for that. If he is our best option at backup PF or C, take the shirt off of Husak.

  5. Anyone know why Johnson was in street clothes? Can we red shirt him twice?;-) I hope he was just injured, but still if he cannot beat out Varner for minutes it is pretty sad because Ross was horrible.

I was only pleased with a couple performances. Bryants was one of them. He can get to the basket almost as good as Perry and has a good 3 shot. He has quick hands on defense but wasn't that great elsewhere in that dept. He and Fisher were very lax on a few plays, not hustling on loose balls throwing some bad passes, but I think Bryant will be a top player on this team.
