  1. Somehow I think the HC is going overboard in his eforts to hold down expectations. After seeing these guys, absent KL, I look for a better than hoped for season. Could RM be pulling that old coaching ploy, "Whoa is me," to make himself look good when lowered expectations are exceeded? I hope so. ;)

Hey ,like everybody else I liked what I saw, but lets remember it was Harris Stowe. Let's at least wait untill UMSL before we get too carried away.
  2. Speaking of D. Lisch, why wouldn't have played last night, when we played two walk-ons? Did I just miss seeing him at mop-up time?

I've been fighting with kshoe on this but I'm not sure a red shirt can play in this game. I thought they changed the rule a couple of years ago. Can anybody tell me that Dustin played in the ex. game last year?
  3. I would imagine, and I could be stereotyping a little, that many Wash U. students are from the East Coast and register to vote in MO, a swing-state, because they feel that their vote will count more here than in NY, MA, etc.

A student can register wherever they want, either using their local address or voting absentee in their home state. I believe there was a recent court case which reaffirmed the students choice.
  4. I was just looking over the schedule and was wondering what type of trip might be put together for the SIU game at Carbondale on 12-2?

I would like to make the trip but wonder if there will be some group plans to take a bus or something like that?

It's early but if someone does start to make plans for this game could you PM me ahead of time so I could make plans.

I think we should have a lot of support their for Thompson.

Billiken Club has a bus going.
  5. I understand a little. I used to always go see a couple of practices before the season started, and I wish I still could. On the other hand, I also understand why they'd be closed and if he believes it helps him to win games ... so be it. I do think it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of scrimmage or something for Billiken Club members before the season, it really wouldn't hurt anything and would just be better publicity and another reason for people to join the club. What would have been wrong with a 30 minute scrimmage at the end of practice last night for Billiken Club members only.

I don't understand why they don't have some kind of blue/white scrimmage. It would probably be good for the kids to have some kind of dress rehersal. It would help build some interest with the hard core and maybe a few students. I use to enjoy going to a few practices but understand why a coach keeps it closed. I'm not sure why they are closed to the media who might generate some buzz.
  6. I believe one of the Aussies is of Croatian descent, and that name has the sound of it to me. It also makes this guy sound a bit like Cotto -- he can ring it up from the parking lot, it says. I like getting another long bomber.

There was another interesting topic that I forgot to post before, from Tuesday night:

Coach made his strongest remarks to date about the A10, and its disadvantages for

SLU. He really expects the Big East to split, and he really hopes SLU can work its way into a remade conference of 8 of the more western teams from the Big East, plus two more (SLU being one of those). He went on and on about Notre Dame and it sounded like his highest hopes would be that the realigned new league would rotate around a solid cluster of midwestern Catholic schools: UND, Marquette, DePaul, and hopefully SLU.

When asked who would be his dream opponents for future scheduling, Coach immediately answered, Georgetown and Marquette. He keeps repeating his wish for Fr. B. to work his Jesuit magic and get those teams scheduled.

The possible breakup of the big east is why we should be in the A-10. If we have any chance of being a part of a new league we will need that eastern visibility. If we were part of the MVC we would be there forever. The A-10 is the best place for our next move.
  7. well first i would of course say again, he shouldnt have been cutting anyone.

but even if the cuts were tolerable, i would say yes, he shouldnt have cut them until he had the bodies to fill those spots. what would the difference have been 2 weeks?

I have felt all along that he should have kept Knollmeyer. The kid was a big body who I felt did ok in his limited time. You could have still taken Harrilson. Danny L is just an after thought.
  8. tonka i agree the Saintsations is better than the saint louis university dance team. but imo, they will always be the baby blues.

i was reading the interview on the second link and was surprised to see that they are all on scholarship? what? we cant even fully scholarship our true sports teams but we have 14-20 dance team girls on scholarship?

i am happy for the dance team, but my gosh, fully fund the sports team scholarships that the ncaa allows at least before doing that.

Don't know the number but I imagine your talking a few hundred dollars per girl.
  9. Out of lack of knowledge and abundance of curiosity, who would comprise that team? Bonner and Hughes are the only two I can think of off the top of my head. Wouldn't the rest be old as hell? Not that there's anything wrong with that, I still like the idea of everybody drinking 3 20 oz beers at halftime before hitting the floor again.

I took it to mean that they were trying to get the Bull's to play a game here.
  10. TT Blog also mentioned a possibility of the games being back on Charter. Wonder if that is true and if Cusumano would be doing the broadcast?

Sorry for the out of town people but I would be thrilled if we went back to charter and they did as many games as they did a few years ago.
  11. with his salary, i doubt he was very tradeable at his point. he had just recently been put back in the starting lineup as hinrich was having trouble dealing with being the off guard to rose.

You could only trade him for someone who also has a high contract but doesn't necessarily fit that teams needs. The bulls have too many guards.
  12. 1. Not really. He's said all along what a natural PG Mitchell is and we've got Lisch and occasionally TL will bring the ball up. The thing about this team, with Lisch, Liddell, and a bunch of freshman, I don't think the roles are going to be as easy to define as 1-2-3-4-5, especially with the guards. Plus, Cotto is billed as a shooter so I'd think he's being molded into a 2.

    2. I don't think anyone said Reed would be redshirted, just that he was going to be at the end of the rotation. I think the comment was that one of the bigs we're trying to sign for next year is a probable redshirt candidate.

    4. Wouldn't the freshman count be 8 this year, and 4 next year (7 sophs, with D. Lisch leaving)? I believe he said the fall and spring classes would be 3 and 1 or 2 and 2.

    5. Probably just meet and greet. That's what it was last year. And why do we always have these meetings, banquets, and events on weekdays? They don't make it easy to support this program from afar.

Rick was asked the direct question as to would anybody redshirt. He immediately brought up Willie's name as to someone who might benefit by a redshirt year. Rick then rambled on for 5 min., but I got the impression that if Willie would agree it was a real possibility.
  13. The women's M and G is for today and doors open at 6:30pm - everyone is invited but it is primarily a chance for the students to meet the team. Same times for the men's activity. Actually, I like what May has done to date - I know he is not a as visible or rah rah as CL was but that does not make him a poor AD. The AD can be behind the scenes as long as he gets something done - that was Woolard's problem he was low profile and low accomplishment. The radio package is far better than anything we have had before and he seemed excited about it when I spoke to him one on one. He has been a mover and shaker in getting other A10 teams to ban together to push for a TV contract change - apparently there was lots bitching but nobody was interested in putting a coalition together to push the commish for changes - Bruno was a sleep at the wheel on this one - I guess she just mailed her last two years in. I liked his comments about inviting back alum players and coaches in the area to take a more active role in the programs and he talked about how he had personally called and invited Rich Grawer to meet with him and gave Grawer a personal tour of the new arena. He told Grawer that he knows that his contributions were important to the program and he wants to make sure that it is recognized accordingly. I am sorry May does not look good in a short skirt and heels but judge him on his results - after all the New England Patriots coach is very underwhelming when he speaks to the media and others and it did not keep him from being successful.

Cheese how do you know May doesn't look good in a short skirt and heels? Have you seen him in one?
  14. I am not sure why you think 590 will be the loser - I do agree that we don't need 3 sports stations that was tried already and it failed, 590, 1380, 1190- They have a much clearer signal than 1380 and are higher profile in the area. Having Stull and Dailey is certainly not going to make me want to listen to them over another station. Burwell is fine but he mostly covers pro sports and RK - he is just none factor to me when it comes to college sports. I kind of think 1380 will be the loser. I know they have BM but he will jump ship at some point and 590 signing Frank is big committment. Slaten on 1380 will also flame out - give him enough time - their signing him showed how desperate they are.

101 has the signal. 1380 has the talent. You might not like Slaten but his advertisers must. I don't think it is an accident that Frank is the only one on 590 that has a contract past the first of the year. As Frank would say I would be willing to bet you a milkshake as to which one goes.
  15. Interesting - I guess 590 realized that they do get something from having the Bills on their station. I know others are unhappy with 590 but I think having them air commercials throughout the season saying they are the voice of the Billikens has some real value. After reading about what 101 plans to do I have serious doubts if that is the best place for us to be.

Most people believe this market can't support 3 all-sport stations. The betting would be that 590 is the loser. Just let Frank and Ramsey go to 101 and we'll all be happy.
  16. So I don't think anyone ever answered the question from a few weeks ago: Why is there a Tip-Off Club and a Billiken Club?

There really is not any difference. I think they keep the Tip-Off name in deference to it's history. For 40 years or more the Tip-Off Club was the only support group for the basketball program. It was run independent of the university, ran it's own membership, raised it's own money, had it's own checkbook. Sometime in the late 1980's the university thought this was a bad idea. The university and the NCAA wanted institutional controle. In a hostile takeover the Billiken Club was formed and the Tip-Off Club was folded in. I think they keep the name out of respect for some of the former members. It also provides some difference between basketball supporters and the rest of the athletic dept.
  17. If it's $100-$125/year...that's not bad at all and well within my budget. I thought it was a lot higher for some reason. Is there a website or something for me to look at?

I still wish they would make an effort with the out of town fan. If you are part of the club and "in the know", can you inquire about that? It really would cost next to nothing to open it up for out of towners. I would imagine the number of out of town fans that would join because of that would offset the cost tenfold.
