  1. Lots of weird, vague information being posted in this thread. First and foremost, everyone please put the name Paul Reinert into the board spellcheck. ;)

Reinert was president from 1949-1972 and then chancellor, which was his fundraising role. O'Connell succeeded him, followed for 2 years by Father Drummond, who was perhaps the "very old" person confused in a prior post. Then Father Fitzgerald followed by Biondi.

Of all of them, Reinert and Biondi were the ones who made significant marks, although Fitzgerald shored up the finances and allowed Biondi to pilot a sound if not terribly attractive ship. The difference was style: Reinert gave us the fabled Chaifetz episode and was pretty universally loved; I doubt anyone would say that about Biondi. (O'Connell, by the way, was very well-liked by the students, and we see where that went in both the short and long terms.)

Another small irony was that Reinert was responsible for laicizing the Board of Trustees. I'm reasonably sure his intent was not to make it the hypersecret rubber-stamp board that it eventually evolved into.

I also finally found at least one article that completely debunks the whole "move to West County" thing about Reinert -- and I continue to contend quite strongly that Biondi never once has had the opportunity to do so other than using it as a bluff.

Fr.Fitz saved the university from going broke. This was the era of 18% short term rates. The university was a heavy short term borrower and was quickly going broke. Fitzgerald came in and floated long term bonds and got off the negative cash flow.
  2. According to the announcer it was "Cody Remekun" at one point... Wait a minute, that's gold, Jerry, gold! A good three point shooter who can play inside just as well, block shots, dunk, and take charges. I think we're on to something.

How could the announcer make a mistake? Guy was at the bragging rights game.
  3. Mitchell's stats:

He doesn't look like anything TOO special according to these stats, but he will beat us if we let him. He is one of the most athletic players in the nation, with a decent jumper. He isn't afraid to shoot the three, but hasn't exactly shot lights out this year, 29%. I think Evans is the clear favorite to guard him, but Remekun and maybe Ellis could also. His athleticism and length are the only problem, as he probably won't beat us from outside. They are much more balanced than one would think, as he has only played 28.9 min/game. Should be an interesting matchup.

the problem I see with Evans guarding Mitchell is fouls. Evans is our best low post option and we need to keep him in the game. If he does start on Mitchell I would not let him pick up his second on him in the first half.
  4. Jensen was making 6 figures at slu he does not in the nba minors. So willie since you talked to him, why did he leave slu and accept less pay if it wasnt because of his distaste for recruiting?

I find it hard to believe he is making less then 100k coaching in the development league. I think he left because he thought it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. If his job only leads to being hired by an NBA team in any position, that's pretty damn good.
  5. my understanding he took a SUBSTANTIAL pay cut to leave here to go to the nba minor league.

i don't believe that. I don't believe we pay any of our assistants so much money that the would take a large pay cut to go to the development league. I also had a few conversations with Jensen and don't believe he hated recruiting so much that he left here for less money because of recruiting.
  6. i actually cringed when the refs came out. terry moore is the ref that screwed us in marquette with the phantom 5 second call against josh fisher. we would have won that game. i dont know if we have seen him since until tonite. of the three refs, he didnt do us any favors tonite.

gerry pollard the man from st charles that always seems to try so hard to prove he isnt providing home cooking. we havent seen much of him since the old cusa days. i will say that i though pollard tonite though was billiken friendly. maybe he is auditioning for A-10 status and needs a billiken reference to get in?

ed crenshaw was my lone hope at the beginning of the game. i think crenshaw is one of the better A-10 refs. tonite i thought he also seemed to see things the billiken way.

hopefully moore is now banished for another decade or so.

I sure didn't think Pollard was Billiken friendly. I agree with your first point, I think he doesn't want to be a homer. He is considered to be a big time ref. He's done the ncaa's the last few years, on tv a lot. The shoes know Crenshaw fairly well. Got a little pre game wave. He called a good game. I HATE Terry Moore.
  7. I disagree with this. I thought Barnett was fine defensively. McLemore is one of the best players in the country. I wouldn't say 11 points and one assist in 25 minutes is having your way with a player. I thought he held his own fine, considering the circumstances. Barnett is gaining confidence and playing much better. I was much more perplexed by the defense of Dwayne Evans. He had an awful night against Releford. I'm not sure if the game plan was to allow him to shoot wide open threes but it sure seems Evans was daring him to shoot. I didn't get that at all. I would have expected Evans to get the better of that matchup but he didn't.

It was obviously the game plan to let him shoot.Don't blame Dwayne.
  8. Absolutely no excuse to allow Jett to get his 3rd foul in the first half, and then his 4th early in the second half. We were only down 13 at halftime, I still believed we would come back, but after that I lost a lot of hope.

Thats one of the few things Crews did that I liked. I'm tired of watching teams lose games with players sitting on the bench because of foul trouble. With Carter hurt Jett needed to play. I know I'm old but in the good old days you played in the first half until you picked up your third. What I don't agree with is he didn't call his team over when Jett fouled out. It's like you have given up.
