I think Groce and his top recruiting class will get a chance and if he fails in the 2017-2018 season then that will be the end of him.
The problem is that this isn't even close to Groce's first top recruiting class he has brought in. According to VC Illinois has the 2nd highest rated players in the B10 behind Michigan State, and are 2nd last in the conference.

Bit harsh. I know SLU is second fiddle to Marquette in his mind, but I'm still happy to see anyone excited about the Bills, especially in these bleak seasons.
Absolutely not, I just see the comparisons between the programs and use that at optimism for the following seasons.

You guys seem to be very pessimistic. Teams like Marquette and Villanova doing well should bring optimism to a program like SLU

Metro StL is almost twice the size of metro Milwaukee. They're really not all that similar. Are you a Marquette grad or Milwaukee transplant or something?
Which makes my point that there is no reason we can't be better. And Marquette and SLU are considered very similar schools.
-
You guys shat on me over and over and over for comparing our turnaround to Marquette's. Well they just beat the number 1 team in the nation today. Milwaukee and St. Louis are probably the most similar cities in the region with one difference, St. Louis has better local talent with few competitors.
-
SLU is on the path to one of the biggest turnaround seasons in maybe NCAA history. It is time to get hyped for next year and the year after that. No more settling for average, keep your head up and sights set high. This team will be a top contender in the tournament shortly

Carter was denied his request for a medical redshirt. It isn't close to being a slam dunk that Bishop will get one.
I think Bishop could fill a role over the next two seasons. That said, with the way Ford has recruited so far why would you want him filling a scholarship slot for 3 more seasons?
Thats what I said about Bishop and Zeke and the boards on me. Seriously if you're not starting now, you have no future here. Its just the truth, our basketball team is not in a position to be nice, it should be pissed off at the performance we had after being a top 10 team and cutthroat

Spot on. The best thing for SLUs rise would be Illini and Mizzou programs that are continuously winning 14-17 games a year. In college basketball hell. Mediocre enough to question a change but also be irrelevant in the grand scheme.
There was a thread today on reddit college basketball on what coaches they predict will be fired after this year and the consensus is Groce https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/5pwhlu/which_coaches_do_you_expect_to_be_fired_this/

He already broke the record scoring 16 in the first quarter. I am expecting a 40+ game today
-
Anyone else pissed that mizzou made Ramey's list and not SLU? Is there some reason he doesn't want to go play for Ford?
-
Well what is the explanation to why he isn't starting over a walk on? Well now he is injured but before.
-
And according to our stat sheet we are 3rd worst in the nation for PPG. It means nothing to me that Bishop was the top scorer on the 3rd worst scoring team in the country. End of story.

Tell Ford to go ahead and take the Missouri job. We have GloriaDays2013 and Soderballs to run this team. Who needs a highly paid coach with years of experience.
I have no idea what you mean, I am saying that Ford sees something and it isn't Zeke. He could be playing him as PG and he isn't. So I am trusting what Ford is doing and it looks to have Zeke not in the future picture.

Like the kid who thought playing for Lorenzo Romar at UDubb would be a good thing. 3/4 of the nation is sleeping when he takes the court.
I believe that was due to him being a family friend, similar to Simmons at LSU

Typically your top 5 recruits are going to be one and done, the rest comes down to who continues to put in work at the college level and proves it, which is why now you have players going to lower level programs so they can be the star and get all the minutes and attention over Duke and Kentucky.
-
Zeke could be the starting PG over Hines, but there is something Ford obviously sees. Why is a walk-on starting over him when he played PG in highschool
-
Top players wont see Zeke leaving as running off local players in my opinion. Zeke had no good offers and was Crews' only recruit for this year if Ford didn't get Johnson. And with Bishop, I see him as a player who scored well on a bad bad team, it won't translate to next years team. We have completely out recruited every player on our team, Zeke would take up a scholarship for another 3 years. Not one player from the Crews era were ranked or top 250 consensus. Zeke will continue to become more of a bench player while we out-recruit him even more. If zeke is a top player our senior year or even starter, we have lost everyone Ford has recruited. Again with Bishop, find another school with as bad a team as us, find their top scorer, and you will see similar or better stats to Bishop. Does that mean you want that player?
-
Groce seems to be a fired coach walking. If so, would that be a free for all for the recruits? Imagine us draining out Nuefield, Gillman, Zeke and Bishop and taking their best recruits.
-
Also is there any point to having Zeke? We could use his scholarship to give to a transfer for the 2018 season or just for reserves
-
I don't think even Bishop thinks he is in rotation next year or after that. I really don't see bishop needing to be on the team. You are also missing Johnson who could develop and be a great bench player, he would play more than Roby since his spot isnt in contention compared to Johnson being 6'7.

Excellent post, Zink. We've reached the point where Ford no longer has immediate minutes to sell. After 2018, we shouldn't expect anymore top 100 recruits for a couple of years. We'll have to "settle" for mere 3 star recruits in 2019 who are willing to wait their turn.
Well that's when you switch your pitch from playing time, vs a championship or guaranteed NCAA Tourney

Goodwin was the one.
And now we have Gordon a 5*

Most top teams play 7-8 man (>15mpg) rotations, as we did in our tourney years. That means 5-6 scholarship players not seeing much of the floor (this is also why I'd be fine giving his kid a scholarship if he's even just a borderline D1 player). Being part of a winner will help, but Ford's recruiting strategy will have to change somewhat.
Well Gordon and Goodwin might be 2 and done players, who knows, but I think it is obvious we will see a completely different team next year. Having solid bench players is a great tool to keep our most talented players from having an ego that makes them think they can ever slack off, for example being a top scorer but not getting back on D. Goodwin and French are solid players and I don't see that happening with them. With that being said, we have no problem out recruiting what we have, and Ford might want to get rid of even more players, I wouldn't be surprised if we have 4 more spots next year with one or 2 for 2017 and the rest for the remaining classes for maybe a crazy good transfer
-
They only listed about 5 players for on the Cusp, so French being on there is great. Alonzo Verge Jr is still uncommitted, I wonder why we don't have an offer for him

You see this with college football and when a coach gets fired you either get the "I committed to playing for ____ University, not the coach" or "I committed to Coach ____ and not ____ school". I would be surprised to see people committed to Groce and not Illinois but it is hard for recruits to go into a program with a coach who didn't pick them if the job doesn't fall to an assistant coach
