  1. One week away, and Greg Oden The Second just broke his foot (or "suffered a foot injury"). Which means Parker and Wiggins are definitely going 1-2 in some order, and Philly threw away its season for Exum or a few dozen games of Embiid.

  2. Ok, who are the 15 coaches that shoul be ranked higher than Marshall, Smart, Ollie, and Miller?

Who are the 15 current coaches you would hire before them?

Miller (Sean) would be in my top 3 if I were a team with infinite resources looking for a coach right now. Donovan and Self would be the other two. Calipari would be in the group, too, if I just wanted to win and was willing to look the other way on a lot of extracurricular stuff. K, Izzo, and Pitino would depend on my program's situation; K is probably gone after the next Olympics, and I doubt the other two will be too far behind him.

I don't watch enough basketball outside of the A10 and ACC to comment too broadly beyond that. In the ACC, I've been really impressed with Tony Bennett and Jim Larranaga (though Larranaga has the same concerns regarding retirement). Boeheim has never really done it for me, though most would probably put him in the same group. Shaka Smart out of the A10 probably deserves mention, too, though I don't have much confidence in his defense being a strong sell to elite (one-and-done-caliber) prospects.

  3. The big one this year was Okafor and Tyus Jones.

I'm hoping North Carolina gets the death penalty for academic fraud (longshot) just to take them out of the running.

Yup. Justise Winslow was sort of the third wheel on that package deal, too (kind of like Junior Smith here) - though Winslow had even been talking about a separate package deal with Stanley Johnson (who ended up at Arizona) at one point. So, ya never know. Okafor/Jones was the rare combo that had been together for a while and were recruited (at least by Duke and a few other serious contenders) as a package deal. But most package deals end up as just wishful thinking - either the kids find better fits at different schools, or schools don't recruit them together, or some other factor pushes them apart.

For what it's worth (probably not much this early in the game), I'd say it's much more likely that Giles and Smith end up together than Giles and Tatum (or all three). Giles seems likely to stay in NC (at UNC or Duke, not Wake). Smith is harder to read, but Duke is definitely making a strong push for him. Tatum is being pulled in a few different directions, too, but I'd bet he stays closer to home (with the possible exception of Florida).

  4. Now you're confusing me even more. You say right now and then bring up Jim Larranaga? And then you say what have you done for me lately. What has Sean Miller done lately that makes him one of the top coaches in the nation?

Whether you like it or not, in order to try to judge coaches you have to look at what they have actually accomplished. The last 5 years is pretty recent, and if we went back further those guys would look even better (obviously). There is no criteria you can develop that would place Sean Miller in the top 5.

Yeah dude, Larranaga's Miami team radically overperformed its talent last season. (And, obviously, they were pretty good the season before that, too.) I don't think Larranaga's in the running for top 5, but he's a good coach who has proven as much in the last one or two seasons.

Sean Miller is one of the best recruiters in college basketball, and is a good game coach. That alone should put him in the conversation. And when you take into account that there really aren't that many elite-level coaches out there right now who have coached at an elite level in the last one or two seasons, I'm not sure what more you want. (Hell, should K be top 5? From someone who watched every Duke game of the last two seasons, I don't think so.)

For what it's worth, we should probably throw Pitino in the discussion, too (although there are definitely some valid questions about his recruiting).

  5. First, you're going back even farther in time than I was considering; I was talking about right now, at this point in time - taking into account the last season, maybe the last two if we're being generous. If we're talking about the last 5 or 10 years or basing it on lifetime achievement, then Miller is not in the same grouping as Izzo or K. But if we're talking about what you've done for me lately, and what you're poised to do in the immediate future, then Sean Miller is definitely top 5.

Second, I think coaching ability is more subjective than just tournament wins. I agree that wins count for a lot, but I'm not ready to start and end the discussion with Calipari, nor am I ready to write off a Jim Larranaga just because he's at Miami and not Duke.

  6. IZZO!?!?

He's generally a great coach, but not always. His teams underperform in some years; he misses on a lot of recruits. If we're looking at lifetime body of work, he's definitely in that top 5/top 3 grouping, but (like K) his past accomplishments can lead people to put him in a more positive light when comparing recent work. I'd definitely put K in the running (along with Wooden) for greatest ever, but that doesn't change the fact that he's coming off a pretty rough season coaching-wise. Same arguments apply to Izzo. (Or, in other words, if we're looking at what you've done lately, then you're only as good as what you've done lately.)

For what it's worth, for my money, Donovan's the best in the game at this point in time. Honorable mention to Bill Self and Sean Miller.

  7. Honestly, I think K's recent recruiting just highlights how bad of a coaching job he did this past season. I don't care about lack of size - you should not ever lose to a 14 when you're fielding two probable lottery picks (one of which appears a lock to be taken in the top 3). And K's coaching throughout the regular reason really wasn't that great, either. He failed to adjust to the new hand-check rules, and never really modified the defense to fit his personnel (which were clearly not getting it). His one major moment of genius (the hockey-style rotations) was quickly abandoned, and, in any case, was a lone bright spot in the general misuse of his personnel (looking at you, Plumlee and Semi). I could go on, but this is a SLU board. The point is, though, that if we're all being honest with ourselves, K needs a bounceback season to get back into that top 5/top 3 grouping. (Though I never understand why some of these other guys - looking at you, Izzo - also seem to get a free ticket into that group.)

  8. I still maintain the 4 and 5 star kids decisions are all about the prestige of the programs pursuing them. These kids all know each other from the AAU circuit. And you can bet how their peers perceive them are determined by who's recruiting them and who they sign with. I think in the end this peer review will be a big factor with JT and he'll likely end up at one of the elites. It would be analogous with a bunch of young Mensas getting offered scholarships to Ivy League schools. They're going to choose Harvard over SLU simply because it's more prestigious. Kind of like, why settle for a Ford if someone's offering you a Mercedes?

I think this is probably true for the good majority of top recruits. After all, these are high school kids in the age of social media and athlete glorification; image and "branding" mean a whole lot to them. And while staying local and playing the hometown hero role may sound great on paper, most will end up captivated by the prestige, media exposure, and greater resources of the blue bloods.

With that said, it isn't clear yet that Tatum falls into that group. And, as it stands now, SLU seems to be in a pretty good spot with him. But over the course of the next year or so, as the blue bloods continue to throw their weight on his recruitment, it's gonna be tough for SLU to overcome its conference and lack of tradition. So I think the big takeaway from Tatum's recruitment thus far, then, is that SLU is a real contender - which is a significant improvement from the recruitments (or lack thereof) of recent 4* and 5* local guys.

  9. I'm by no means a Mizzou fan, but there's a lot of unnecessary jumping on and twisting of cheesycow's words in this thread. He never said Mizzou is on par with Duke (or Kansas). Jumping to the SEC (from the unstable and Texas-dominated Big XII) was a great move for Mizzou athletics. I've never heard anyone from Mizzou begging to play Kansas.

I mean, a lot of this stuff is just patently untrue. And Mizzou is by no means a great program - there have been a lot of failures over the last several years, and a lot of questions remain. But to attack cheesycow and put words in his mouth just makes us (SLU fans) look bitter and aggressive. Chill, people.

  10. Mizzou is not a bad program. But there are only two programs in the SEC that really matter, and Mizzou isn't one of them. Maybe they'll step up and claim the bronze medal, but to do so will require answering a lot of questions about their coach, roster, fan support, and AD.

  11. If I had trashed on Clemson, UNC, any another ACC school... would you have batted an eye... no. But quick, let's reference the infamous "Dook-hater profile", or it must be another guy with an obsession.. pretty good. Dook is definitely more likable than MIZ for me. Same tier as a UK, KU, etc. Trolling fans of these and other programs on a Billikens board should be encouraged.. especially if you're going to take the bait so easily.. the article didn't mention Dook once..

Apologies to everyone else. Also, I like the shot clock going to 30 seconds. Would this help the more defensive-oriented teams, i.e. you only have to lock down the other team for 30 seconds a possession vs. 35?

Would I have said anything? Of course not - I don't care about those other schools.

Honestly, I wasn't going to acknowledge your initial comment either, until MB said something and I figured I'd chip in. On some level, I support your hatred/obsession, if only because Duke/ESPN need people like you. I just found it strange that you walked away with " Duke" from that article - and I think people who then justify their dumb comments with "lol, totally trolling you, bro" generally suck. (I put trolling up there with selfies and majoring in liberal arts as reasons why my generation is blowing it.)

But we've probably carried this on too long already, and I don't think it's worth continuing. Apologies to everyone else. Go Bills. Go Devils. Go 30-second shot clock.

  12. Have recently been hearing a lot of pro-SLU/pro-Midwest stuff with Tatum. We seem to really have a lot of momentum with this kid (while other schools - sans Florida - seem to be losing ground); we need to keep pushing hard over the next season and hope he verbals early.

  13. Went fishing.. caught a couple good ole boys. If 8 words doesn't speak to an obsession, I don't know what else could.

    #Dooooooooook #Offseason #TrollSoHard #ProfileDeezNutz

lol, ok bro. You made a douchey comment, but it's ok because you were totally just trolling. Roger that, chief.

  14. The resident Duke ball washer is in the house...

MB has a point. The article poses an interesting discussion of a proposed rule change that could significantly affect college basketball as a whole, and all the dude walks away with is " Duke." If that isn't obsession, I don't know what is.

  15. "Experimentation with a 30-second rule is certainly worthwhile. But it would be more valuable if employed in the NIT or the CBI or, as used to occur with rule proposals, in exempt events like the Battle 4 Atlantis or Maui Invitational."

I definitely agree with the above. But since no one else seems to want to take the initiative here, I'm glad the ACC is stepping up. This should've been done a long time ago.

  16. Again, no new revelations. Just what you'd expect from a returning SR, since you know they're not going to say, "we're really gonna be bad next year."

Exactly, this is the same company line being delivered by hundreds of college athletes across the country. It's a non-story, and it says a lot about the Post Dispatch that they're charging for it.
