Is not having a "coach" in place hurt us? If so, hire the out of Jim Crews.
Really?? Why the change of heart?
-
I too have seen enough. Beginning of the season, I thought he was a great guy for an interim position, but was highly suspect going forward. Now, not so much. Majerus knew what he was doing when he brought Crews in and it is showing.
As for as recruiting, the designated "recruiter" hot new assistant seems not to work at SLU and I think Romar proved that. And if they do have success, they are looking to leave early anyway. A story is what you need. Spoonhour could say, I just took two of the least talented teams in college basketball to the NCAA tourney, selling out stadiums, good conference. Majerus was on ESPN, known as one of the best coaches, could say he was going to turn this around. And even then, he was going after some under the radar guys.
Crews is starting to get some coach of the year talk. He is the guy that outcoached Brad Stevens twice and Shaka Smart. The guy Majerus handpicked due to his ability to coach. Nice arena, good conference, national TV games. Polished guy. Looks like he could play some hoops now, a young 59. And he isn't going anywhere. This is not a hard sell to recruits. The more stories about Crews/SLU/Majerus, the more he is a name and essentially the best option for recruiting at SLU.
Anyway, in recruiting, it is more important to be able to evaluate players, players that you can develop to be successful. Not a marketing guy but talent scouts.
This is assuming he wants to stay of course.
+1 perfectly said

i would bet the typical 16 year old doesnt know who danny manning is/was.
The typical 16year old would not have known who RM was either. A little explanation and video tape goes a long way.

One of my best friends played for Lou from 93 to 97 at Illinois. Lou was a fair recruiter. He had 2 big time recruiting assistants that actually landed most of the recruits. He was able to win with big time talent but probably could have won more if he had been a better x and o guy. His defense was very structured but the offense was completely freelance that allowed guys to run without structure to the point that cost them many games they should have won.

Lou Henson was running a dirty program and Jimmy Collins was the bag man. Skywalker and the boys were getting paid like a UK one and done.
And Henson was a dogshit game coach.
yes sir you are 100% correct on all points.

henson was the coach there for 20 years got to 12 ncaa tourney's, 2 sweet 16's and 1 elite 8 team besides the 1 final four team. imo the only other possibly worthy final four team would have been the bruce douglas teams in the mid 80's and they made a sweet 16 and an elite 8 run. all in all, i think we would all just about kill to have had a coach with the ncaa tourney success of lou henson.

great win, notwithstanding whatever that moron grunky says.
Agreed. Nothing better than a road win no matter how ugly. Richmond tries to make it ugly. Says a lot that we can struggle offensively and basically shut a team down on their home floor. Good teams find a way to win and that's what we did tonight.

What a total and complete embarrassment to our state!!!! Thugs! Pure and simple. Did you see 42 get up ready to have a street fight? And after he intentionally tripped the kid. Just a complete embarrassment.
Yeah if I am coaching he is sitting at the end of the bench for a couple of games no matter what the situation. Complete classless move and really takes away from a pretty descent performance today.

The ability to close is the big question. You can hire asst to do the leg work, but the head guy has to close the deal. If the team does well in the tournament. Crews ability to close will be enhanced.
I guess the big recruiting question I have about JC is if he has a similar eye for untapped talent that RM had. We don't have any 4 or 5 stars on the roster and may not get any no matter who the coach may or may not be. RM got the guys he could mold and bring the talent we see out of. Can JC do this and is he willing to do this? Give me 5 more JJ, MM, CE, KM, and DE every year and the program continues at a high level. If I remember correctly none of these guys made anyone jump for joy on signing day.

Random observation that has nothing to do with Mizzou.
I saw that the Illini knocked off #1 Indiana. Illinois is not a good team, but they have so many opportunities at home to beat great teams that it makes them look good. They will have a crappy record and still make the tournament. If they are hot from the outside they might even win a couple of games. In reality they have no business being in the tournament.
It won't matter who they beat. 3-7 in the Big 10 will not get them in the Tournament. They will have to get back to 500 in the conference or it will be NIT or worse for them. I do not see that happening. I think Groce is a little over his head right now.
-
Not to rain on Mardi gras parades but we gotta beat Richmond
Agree 100% with we need to beat Richmond. But c'mon It is fun though to pile on when Mizzou loses to a team we beat by 21 on a neutral floor and they have not won a true road game this year.
-
The Pre-season SEC player of the year, the "future NBA player," the amazing Flip Pressey isnt even rhe best guard in the state.
AMEN!!!!!!
-
C'mon guys...mizzery is a decent team...they beat bucknell.
Yep according to Frank C. the win over Bucknell pretty much locked up a trip to the final four. Haith sure can buy some talent but definately cannot coach it.

I do not recall seeing any team, ever, play defense the way the Billikens played against Butler, especially in the first 15 minutes of the first half. It was almost like 8th grade boys playing against 5th grade girls.
The defense in the first half of the New Mexico game was possibly the best defensive half of basketball I have ever seen and the last 3 games is a close second.

No way you have a company to move unless you were driving the truck. Big boys don't cry. Troll on big feller......
No crying here little feller. Life is good. I don't have to insult others to feel good about myself. You are probably on cloud nine right now.
-
You've got to be a troll. When you watch the Billikens do you notice that sometime opposing teams fans say not so nice things to them? Do you notice how they don't flop on the ground (other than Cody) and start whining about it?
Your wife is in law school? I'm guessing that she might be involved in a legal disagreement someday. Better start steeling yourself for that moment......
Oh and bad example. Wife graduated from SLU Law a couple years ago. She was bored when I moved my company headquarters to St. Louis and wanted something to do. She doesn't practice. She just wanted a law degree. SLU Law was easy for her to get in to.

Ok another pointless shot. What is your point? I am not from an opposing teams fanbase. I am a Billiken fan. I am all about discussion and disagreement. Apparently if you and I disagree, then I have to be a troll. Yes that makes sense. If someone takes a shot at me and I fire back and I am a new poster then I am a troll. Again that makes sense.
I simply started this thread because the negativity surrounding Billiken basketball gets exhausting. Just yesterday we are up 31 and the people sitting behind me are nonstop complaining about how the game was being played and officiated. One of these folks was rewarded with a ball for longevity earlier this year. When does it end?

Okay, to get back to the topic, I do think that Jim Crews is in the process of deserving serious appreciation... when the season is over. The assessment can't occur in the middle of the season. Then, getting beyond that, should the Billikens complete a great run, like winning or sharing an Atlantic... 12+4 regular season championship and/or get to the Sweet 16 or beyond, then if Crews wants to continue as SLU's head coach, he ought to interview for it. There must be a national search and all of the factors pertaining to maintaining a successful program must be considered. If Crews is the best man for the job, then he should get it, but it shouldn't just be handed to him because of what he's done with what he inherited from Coach Majerus.
Perfectly said and better way of saying exactly what I was attempting to get at. I just think some credit and gratitude needs to be thrown his way and not so much hate and dismissal.

Who cares how many posts i have... I graduated from SLU & attended more games than most students at the time.
My guess is that I have attended many more games than you have to this point and donated twice as much. Along with my wifes law school tuition that I paid might make me a bigger contributer than you will ever be. Correct? or do you have another shot you want to take at me?
-
uh buddy, if we get into the new Catholic league... those figures will drastically change. Anywho.. take your crap elsewhere. You did not attend SLU; therefore, your opinion of our program means to me. Buh-Bye!
Big IF by the way. And IF not????

My money to the program should mean something to you.

Good gravy! Are you serious??? Are you the most sensitive person on the planet??? You should really get out more. This is just about the nicest corner of the internet. Try crying like this on any other college sports website and see what happens. Grow up or grow a pair. Your seat will be bought pretty soon if you leave and SIUE may be more your speed.
And you wonder why the season ticket sales are around 6000 in a 10,000 seat arena when you have been the only basketball around. Nope not sensative at all. Just kind of amazing how quickly some on this board attack others and seem to think that they have the right to do so.

Just can't stop bashing, can you?
It's just like immigrants to the US. Some are good and some are bad. Being an immigrant doesn't make you bad. Being an outsider doesn't make you bad either.
Thanks bbtds. Apparently the money I send every year to the Billiken club and purchasing season tickets and becoming a fan is taboo to some Billiken fans. Pretty sad really. Kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth about a school you didn't attend but try and support. Everyone complains about lack of local support but seems to take any chance to be a keyboard toughguy and spew hate. Must make them feel better about themselves and justify their billiken fandom.

I heard a Rick Majerus interview about 3 years ago. He was asked who had the best basketball IQ in the nation. Without hesitation, he said Jim Crews. I had to google search to see who he was.
There has been a decided change in how Crews has publicly coached this team. He now looks like he has firm reigns on the team and the response is quite positive. I believe our coaching staff is putting together great game plans and the team is working hard to work that plan.
I applaud what Crews is doing as HC. For a team to survive the loss and death of a HOF coach and now to flourish, I believe the current coaching staff is doing an excellent job. Moving Grandy into the starting line-up was quite a coaching decision.
Before you all anoint the next head coach to be - be careful what you wish for.

See I told you I would get mauled. All I am basically saying is that for all the Crews Badgering that has been done on here there has not been very much credit given to what I would consider one of the best band aid jobs done in the country this year.
Hey Bobby I am not on the attack just not fond of your posts. None are funny and rarely insightful. And remember you don't know me so please refrain from your attacks on me. You have no idea whether I am educated or not and have no idea what I have or have not done. Remember that before you make unsubstantiated comments. Thanks
And wow I just said I have been a Billiken fan for 6 years. Doesn't mean I dont know anything about college basketball. I moved here from Kansas City and had KU tickets for 20 years. I know how college basketball works.
A lot of you guys make it hard to be a billiken fan. That from an outsider that is trying to embrace your program and all I get is basically told I am an idiot for trying to point out a positive. I guess I can take my money and support to SIUE since you all seem to think that if there is not a huge splash hire it will be the same quality of basketball.
Sounds like Crews has the job

The only problem with hotshot assistants is that if they have the success we want them to have they get gobbled up by schools willing to pay what we wont and the process starts all over again. If there is a hire to be made then someone needs to pony up the 3 mil a year and get some long term stability. Otherwise SLU will either be a groomer for the big boys or a home for basketball coaching mediocrity.
