  1. From what I have seen/heard about this team, I believe there is no reason why we shouldn't be in the top 25. Our days of non-national prominent soccer might possibly be over with the new team and coach. Now if we could only add another star onto our kit! Luckily this team is set up to be good for a while with a huge underclassman group and a coach that can really recruit.

  2. Just means SLU and everyone associated with RM is doing a great job at what they should be doing. At a certain point this just becomes a personal issue and all we can do is wish coach the best of luck and a speedy recovery. I would think if they had great news they would share it with Billiken Nation, but until there is something great I do not expect to hear a peep from anyone. Doesn't mean anything is bad, just means we are respecting his privacy.

  3. So since we have had such a hectic summer with the university in terms of administration and the law school in particular, I found this years rankings very interesting. (Note that last year SLU ranked in at 90). This year we are ranked at 92 in a tie with Stony Brook University - SUNY, Texas Christian University, University of San Diego, and University of Vermont. A few other area universities to give you perspective: University of Missouri (97), WashU (14), U of I (46), and Maryville (160). The only A10 school to outrank us as a national university is Fordham (unless I am missing someone).

Just thought this would be interesting to share with everyone considering what has been happening. Clearly we are going in the wrong direction, but not as bad as I thought it would be (I expected not even in the top 100). Or maybe this won't hit our rankings until next year, but always still interesting.

  4. Yeah, when I was driving home I realized I had miscounted (by 2!) and changed by post to a "nm" but you beat me too it. 19 regular season home games is undoubtedly a record.

Personally, I think its pretty ridiculous because it will negatively impact the RPI this year (whether its merely a matter of seeding or actually getting in the dance will of course depend on how many wins we have) and it leads to an imbalance with next year. We've got 3 road games already on the books for next season (Valpo, SIUC, SIUE) and no known home games. We are going to have to find a few home and home quality opponents that want to start a series at SLU if we are going to have any kind of a home schedule other than buy games. I don't understand why they didn't make the Valpo game a road game or even call up SIUE and see if we can start the series at their place this year, just to balance things out a little bit.

It was poor planning and while this year no season ticket holder will complain about having an extra home game or two, next year we are probably going to be shorted one and this problem could have been avoided.

At least those three away games for next year listed so far are pretty close to St. Louis. I'm sure I will make the trip with more students that we can get together.

  5. No Mardi Gras game this year, as we are away that weekend. I don't know if that's good or bad. There's always plenty of students at that game, but they are all drunk so they're not the best fans that day.

Really? I always thought the drunk fans were the best fans because they actually made noise.

  6. I really like our uniforms. Anyone else a fan?

I feel like the new kits are a combination of so many classic kits, but for some reason it works. My only complaint is we need an 11th star next to SLU. Our soccer program is easily one of the greatest in NCAA history and theirs really no excuse for us to not compete over the next few years. The team seems to be getting stronger every year for the past few years now.

  7. Mid-major typically refers to any NCAA D1 conference out side of the BCS Football conferences. I won't say I love it, but I will say I think it wouldn't be hard to redefine the conferences when it comes to basketball as the multi-bid and one-bid conferences like waldo did. Then again who cares about those 22 other conferences, no one really as they typically account for the 13, 14, 15, and 16 seeded teams. A majority of these teams don't even make through the first weekend, and typically only one every few years will make it to the second weekend if they are absolutely lucky (note that I said lucky, it doesn't mean the team is all that good in the first place.) Mid-major just gives the media an easy way to discuss the A10, CUSA, MW, MV, and WC conferences. Accept it and move on, hope for the Billikens in the top 25, then we get as much media as we want.

  8. Can someone confirm the attendance on the box score? 432 people seems like a rather small crowed considering the opponent. Granted I am not in St. Louis right now so I can't attest to the weather, but I recall most of the games I attended last year were much bigger. With the smaller games being the smaller (non-rivals) conference games.

  9. Where the hell did this thread go... I would make a comment about recruiting right now, but I feel that the comment will be turned into an anecdotal story about the Rams or President Obama or something completely random. Yet another thread bites the dust.

  10. So who are we calling the captin this year? I remember Rick saying in an interview that Evans might be the first junior leader on one of his teams. Or do we think Crews will give the responsibility to KM? Or better yet it just naturally comes to be GG, or whoever steeps up really... +100 for GG.

  11. Well I have tried to read most of the stuff posted, but it is kind of hard to stay in the loop from Sweden, but I don't think we need to worry about this season too much. Loosing RM will eventually hurt our program, but we are looking at a team of mostly veterans that have played under RM their entire college career and know the system. Our new guys look good and if the current team stays intact through the season without injures there is nothing keeping SLU from another NCAA trip. I think I've heard this a few times now, but honestly recruiting and transfers should be our biggest priority from this season and beyond. Personally from readying about Crews history, I am not sure if he is the man to do this job. But then again, some have claimed he came to SLU as a favor to RM (and we all know RM has tricks up his sleeve even when we least expect it.) It'll all hopefully work itself out in the end, our thoughts and prayers are with RM for his health and wellbeing. He accomplished what he came to SLU to do, restore our team to its former prominence, and if he were to never coach another game I would consider him on of the greatest college coaches and without a doubt one of the best defensive minded coaches in the sport.

In terms of our "next" HC beyond Crews, first lets give Crews a chance. I have to think the administration will conduct interviews this fall for the 2013 and beyond seasons and more than likely Crews will be considered (if they don't start doing this recruiting is going to be nearly impossible as I know I wouldn't want to go play somewhere if I was not certain who my coach would be.) Luckily we are in the A10 so it shouldn't be to hard to get a new high caliber coach if that is what the administration wants. We are a strong conference with very high potential for post-season play along with attractive facilities and administration to work with. I don't think we will get another RM caliber coach, but the good coaches need to start somewhere so who knows what will happen. For now let's enjoy the season RM has orchestrated for us and wish him the best.

  12. The Bills played Oklahoma (not State) in the 76 last year. I suspect the Sooners' RPI was significantly better than the Cowboys'.

My fault, I wasn't really thinking when I said that. The point still makes sense minus Oklahoma. Its tough to think living above a night club.

  13. Problem w/ the NM game is it's over Xmas holidays, student turnout won't be as great as it should be.

Which makes me wonder why did SLU schedule one of our bigger games (home and home) on the 31st. With the number of local students SLU has I would love to see more students there, but I went to all of those games last year and it was pathetic.

  14. Good summary of what was covered today. Backhand doesn't have much to add. Although, May did give a shout out to section 108.

Clearly May meant to give a shout out to 121/122 front... but I guess we can forgive him once...

Something that hasn't been discussed recently is do we think this schedule of teams will lead to an increase in student attendance. Playing a few bigger named schools may help us out with in the bleachers. I have been in a few college arenas and it is pretty safe to so that when the students show up to games our arena can be one of the louder arenas that I have been to give the Bills a fantastic home court advantage. Butler should end up being a big game, but I could also a few of the OOC teams such as the NM team help out attendance (only if you can get a viable student section to attend over the break). I personally do not think we need to worry about our regular fans, there seems to be a decent supply of season ticket holder and hopefully SLU will be able to market our program much better over the coming years now that we have some recent success and a bright future ahead.

  15. Jumping into this discussion kind of late, but wouldn't the committee view a conference champion (Valpo) win more important than a win against a CBI team (Stanford) even if Stanford had a slightly better RPI. In the end perception has a lot to do with what people think about the Billiken team. Last year throughout the 76 classic some were surprised that we beat Villanova (Final RPI 120) and Oklahoma State (RPI 121) but considered the game against Vermont(RPI 127) an easy win. I know that Stanford is a BCS opponent but in the end Valpo has a MUCH better chance of making it into the big dance and actually not be a 16 seed (might be a little higher but not much more than a 14 or 13). Stanford's best chance of post season play is with Dayton in the NIT at best!

  16. So this is a random article that I found on Bleacher Report about the "Sickest Hair in College Basketball." At first it seems kind of stupid, but our very own Jordair Jett made the list (he does have pretty awesome hair especially when it is "streamlined" - all of you in the band know what I'm talking about). Bleacher Report is primarily written by random people, not necessarily professional sports writers, and SLU has been getting some random posts occasionally on there (primarily asking what a Billiken is). So all in all it seems kind of stupid, but this particular writer is from California and does not seem to be connected in any way to our opponents or region. Might be stupid news, but I will take any publicity of SLU. (BR is one of the most visited online sports media outlets.)

  17. Complicated issue... but I can see why RM would be disappointed in the student section. I attend every game as I am in the pep band and on most nights we are the more energetic half and when there is a big crowd (Whiteout/Blueout) the two sides can never get it together... that is a whole different conversation, but I would say the general public has supported the Billikens very well considering the circumstances. Almost no one comes to Billiken games to see other teams considering we play no name schools or schools that have no significance such as Charlotte, RI, Richmond, Fordham, etc. and our non conference schedule last year (Vermont, UIS, Portland? (can't remember), etc) is not very exciting. Hopefully one day with the building of the A10 we can start to get a better non conference schedule, possibly a Mizzou game, a continuation of the New Years Eve NM game, look for a Marquette or a Memphis game, and the stronger our team gets the more likely we are to have a non conference schedule like Xavier with Vanderbilt, Tennessee, etc. This will help bring in a stronger city and campus crowd. I can honestly say last year I was not disappointed with the crowd at any games, my only disappointment was with the Slunatics...
