  1. however, a big booster with deep pockets is allowed to contaminate the process. Keeping the athletic department in the dark was a farce. The people who know these kids and have their interests in mind should have been aware of the process and allowed to assist the kids in defending themselves.

Anyone affiliated with SLU who isn't ashamed of how this went down should take a good hard look in the mirror. I find it very hard to believe that this hasn't caused a huge backlash from all boosters academic and athletic. Every Alum should be raising hell, and f..k your higher moral ground and attitude that the kids shouldn't have put themselves in the position in the first place. The bigger issue isn't what 19-20 year old kids will or won't do, it's what a University that is supposed to be teaching kids right and wrong will or won't due for money. The sad part of that is we know the answer to that question as SLU has sold any idea it had of treating students fairly to the highest bidder.

I agree with you. SLU proved they were for sale. The season ticket buyers were hit with a bait and switch.

  2. The most disturbing part about this entire process is how the athletic department was kept completely in the dark about this. In another thread, Billikan talked about how acted as though they didn't AD didn't know this entire scandal was coming when scheduling the Duke game. Kwamain on a billboard?!?!?! All this breaks days before practice?

I thought...well hoped... that SLU had turned the corner and treated the AD with respect and as a group that should be "in the loop." Think Notre Dame or Georgetown's Athletic Department would not be on high alert or at least in the loop if the starting QB or top two mens BB player were in this mess? Don't know Janet, never heard her name before. But how can she provide ANY advice if she isn't made aware of what is at stake and what is going to happen.

Who roped this 2nd year law student into this mess? How did that come about?

this process was either corrupt or grossly and inexcusably incompetent. I'm not sure there is any inbetween.

I think that is why the department was kept in the dark. They didn't want the image of a sports vocational school (which many would have stuck with them) because the athletes got special treatment. I agree with the above point that if this was Notre Dame's starting MLB and QB, that hearing never happens. SLU did not want any traces of influence from the athletic department to "contaminate" their process.

  3. I thought N. Ill. filed a complaint and the NCAA said they would investigate, making him untouchable by any team. Not aware of any ruling by the NCAA. Do you have different information Brian?

I would think that if this was the case, take him anyway and if he's ruled ineligible deal with it later.

  4. This is something I don't get. Why an expulsion when a suspension for the first semester would have served the same purpose? Why make them re-enroll?

Maybe to keep the moral police happy...hey, we threw these two completely out of school.

    I apologize if I'm a little cynical.

  5. i dont mean to come down on you busted as you are far from the only one on this message board expressing this opinion of sorts but something just snapped after reading your above message. not that it was any worse or even close to the most disappointing view of this whole thing there have been many more over the last few weeks and in particular 24 hours. i cant even begin to describe how disappointed i am with the general tone of this board concerning this. maybe i am too old fashioned and conservative, but the level of casualness about the whole affair astounds me.

i think the board in general is way off on this. yes the leaked proceeds of the student code court doesnt appear was fair, but slu and that court didnt cause that fateful night to happen. the only ones to blame for what happened and the set back our program is about to take is the four billikens that were in that room that night.

regardless of what actually happened they used EXTREMELY bad judgement and there is no doubt in my mind that something bad indeed happened. i dont care about he said she said, i dont care about consent or not, i dont care about the declining sexual morals of today's youth, saint louis university is still a jesuit university and events of this degree shouldnt be happening, especially to our basketball players.

i am p!ssed beyond probably anything that has ever happened to the program, and i am disappointed the way some things were handled, but bottom line, the ultimate blame and resulting penalties have fallen in the right place and there is a darn good chance that these young men are lucky their lives havent been screwed up even more than what they have already screwed them up.

and let's not forget, while so many have insinuated blame and disgust at the girl, her life is ruined. she is gone from slu. her family and friends will forever look at her and think about "that night". casual acquaintences will blame her. hell she might as well go into witness protection.

and for those of you putting all your eggs into the credibility of willie reed sr's tirades and leaks of information to multiple media sources and perfectly playing the grapevine. please keep in mind this is the same man that put his emerging high school senior in a sham of a high school run by a basketball street agent in his son's senior year.

this is the same man that likely has been negotiating with frank martin the protege of bob huggins prior to getting his son's release and knowing he probably needed some leverage to get that release. i would put crediblity in willie reed sr's statements and tirades about as far as i could pick up chaifetz arena and throw across compton onto harris stowe as to what might have actually happened throughout this ordeal.

my gosh, let's be saint louis university alums, parents and students first. billiken fans second. get your priorities straight. they should go hand in hand. all i know is that father biondi, chris may and rick majerus are not stupid. if anyone thinks they f'd this up, they are wrong. the truth is probably closer to this was a lose lose situation from the get go and after very painful deliberations and meetings they did what they could to protect the university reputation and the safety and security of our students now and in the future by sending the correct message. put me in the corner of this probably wasnt severe enough.

good night. i am going to go watch baseball and have a few beers and not read billikens.com for at least a few hours.

Roy, I respect your opinion. I just think that the timing sucked. I had my Billiken Basketball fan hat on instead of my SLU Law Alum hat. Nobody wins here...not the girl, not the team, and not the school.

Seckert, I'm not sure you know what you're talking about. The two players are in trouble now for the same issue they were "in trouble" for before. The only difference is when this issue first came to light, the police/DA didn't find enough evidence to prosecute. Apparently the Student Court felt there was enough there to suspend them. So before you call anyone stupid, make sure you know what you're talking about.

    Former SLU board poster, right?

Yes, I know this doesn't fit here, but I found it in the Burwell article comments.

  7. Are they suspended from school or from the team. If it is from the team, they can resume playing as soon as the first semester ends just like a transfer. If they are suspended from the school, I would assume they wouldn't be eligible until they started classes on Jan. 18th. I have no idea, I am just wondering if they would be considered students before class started?

I guess it matters when the suspension officially ends. If it ends the last day of the first semester, then they should be immediately eligible to re-enroll right away.
