Looks like this thread is kinda dying but I wanted to add my two cents:
Mo. St. was embarrassing, but honestly I expected nothing less from SLU. SLU always bends over backwards to make sure they make as much money as possible. As a senior last year, I bought student season tickets and I refused to ever buy student season tickets again because for a couple games, they sold student section tickets to everyone and students were forced to sit with families and older fans. Getting yelled at to shut up or sit down in your own student section is demoralizing. Almost as demoralizing as attending a home game with a bigger visiting fan base.
Last year on Mardi Gras, Rick said the fans won that game for us and by showing up in force, and they absolutely did. So what makes the difference between an amazing presence like on Mardi Gras and the lack there of for Mo St.? Alcohol and something to do before the game. If students had somewhere FUN to go to tailgate before games that would automatically bring in students, young alumni, and even older alumni and friends. Its hard to get people to go to the games alone, so you need to give them something to get behind before the games. And if slu doesnt want to allow tailgating on school grounds or at the arena, then at least work with somewhere like the Library annex (read: not humps) and get them to make great drink specials and food specials for all home games and televised away games. You can even bring the slu cheerleaders/dance team/ whatever they are called now and get them to give out free stuff. Something like this wouldnt even cost money (except for the free giveaways) and you will attract more people to games.
I understand the stigma behind the university supporting drinking, but get over it already. Its a sporting event, people are going to drink, and in my opinion, it makes for a bigger fan base. Call it a necessary evil if you want.
