  1. It was not clear to me why Chris Mack was given the technical foul. The ref who called the foul was half way across the court when he called it. I assume Mack must have been riding that ref earlier in the game, but.... Does anyone know why the ref called the foul?

  2. I hope you have a chance to read the article about Brian C. in the Post-Dispatch today. It is a very good article about how Brian is more concerned with the team than with himself. I have always been impressed with his grit and tenacity on the court, but I am more impressed with his attitude. He is a great ambassador for our university!

  3. Not exonerating the woman in the least (she was stupid!), but it is going to be hard for me to root for KM if/when he returns. I am glad that WR, JJ, and JS are gone. Oh yes, we might lose more games this year, but I would rather support a team I respect (albeit somewhat out of ignorance) than root for a team led by people who have behaved very improperly. To even consider taking advantage of a woman by having multiple men use her (which they did) is inexcusable in my opinion.

  4. We really lack leadership which was very apparent this evening. There is no go-to guy on this team.

Actually, I think Jordair Jett is going to be our go-to guy within the next couple of months. He clearly has a nose for the basketball and has enough control of his body to not foul when he is driving.

  5. I have just purchased two general admissions tickets at the box office. The situation is that if you are season ticket holders in the Loyal Blue or Gold sections, then you can get your season seats for $20. If you have season tickets in the "General Reserved" sections, then you can NOT get your season seat and must purchase a general admissions ticket and then get to the game early enough to get a good seat. If the Billikens win this game, then for the next home game even General Reserved season ticket holders can "reserve their own seats". HOWEVER, if the Billikens win that game (the second game), then General Reserved season ticket holders will NOT be able to reserve their season seats. etc etc.. This is what I was told by multiple people.

I have written a letter to Chris May and Father Biondi protesting the University's handling of these tickets. They had more than enough time to prepare for post-season play. I recommend you do the same. Their email addresses are:

  6. Boy, have the Billikens come a long way this year! The win against Dayton was great - the guys kept their poise even after Dayton came within 2 of tying the game. What imposed me much this game (and several other recent games) is the Billikens' ability to break the press. If I recall correctly, they were never really seriously challenged by Dayton's press. They aggressively came toward the passed ball and were spread out well on the court so that they were always able to pass up the court and not get trapped. Earlier this year, I always cringed when another team pressed us. Unless KM dribbled out of the press, it often seemed that our team struggled with the press and frequently turned it over. Well no more. Our boys can break the press and keep their poise. Good job guys.

  7. I agree with Jerram's comments. No one wants to stifle fans' engagement in the game, but in can be done in an appropriate way. I am amazed about how many fans in my area (101) sit throughout the entire game and then get up to yell and wave their hands for little colored balls. I am screaming my voice hoarse in most games. Go Bills.

  8. Thank you Mtbills1 and others for your thoughtful comments to my post. I teach at SLU and try to help students be more articulate and use words properly. Many students, however, are unwilling to learn and settle to just "speak good" (ouch I hope that hurt your ears). It is my hope that our students are clever enough to come up with really good chants without resorting to coarse words or crude statements or copying other schools' chants.

And I do agree with you about the cheerleaders' uniforms and dances. I would not want my daughter prancing around in front of a male-dominated crowd in some of their outfits and making some of their provocative moves.

I look forward to your thoughtful response.

  9. As a Xavier fan I'm not trying to Flame. Take it for what it's worth...many times in last nights game the chant of Bull**** was loudly heard coming through the TV.

Thank you for commenting about this issue. I DO have two young children and am hoping to bring them to Billiken's games in the future. I am a season ticket holder and have been for a number of years. Some of the profanity is NOT appropriate for little children and is unnecessary. Hopefully SLU fans are able to communicate emotionally and effectively with words that are longer than four letters or hyphenated four-letter words such as bullxxxx. Don't we want families with little children to attend games? Of course we do, thus some moderation in the use of profanity would be beneficial and appropriate. I think the Blue Crew has been great, and hopefully they can come up with some really clever chants.

  10. I am just looking for all the KC haters we had early on in the season. I said then as I will say now. He is only a sophomore and will just improve :D

I was one of those who did not think Kyle added much to the team early on this season; but clearly (and fortunately) I was wrong. His help defense has been outstanding recently. And his aggressiveness in fighting for loose balls is good to see.

In contrast, every time I was Willie go out to the top of the key, I wince in anticipation of his man backing down to the post and getting the ball. It is at those times that is good to have other team members like Kyle watching your backside.

    Go Kyle!

  11. I thought the game was horribly played and refereed. The UMKC offensive scheme was simple and straightforward. One would assume that our guys would know how to get past the picks, switch men on picks when needed, and not get beat on the back door. But alas, our defense was not very good.

Fortunately, the referees called too many plays in our favor. I am a true-blue billiken fan, but the calls were clearly going in our favor for the first 50 to 55 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, the refs tried to give the UMKC players some calls during the last five to ten minutes of the game, which was/is not a good time to "even" out the fouls.

I thought the UMKC coach did a very good job of not getting all-bent-out-shape by the bad calls. And the technical foul call by the ref was ridiculous. That ref was halfway across the court from the coach when he called the T. I doubt he even heard what the coach said. Nor did the posture or actions of the coach warrant a T. It was a ridiculous call.

Well at least we got the win.

  12. I must have been watching a different game in some aspects. Conklin and Reed had the passion tonight. Conklin was his usual tenacious, hardfight, competitive self. Did not appear that his ankle hindered his movement too much. Reed was on the floor three or four times in the first half fighting for loose balls. If such hard-nose play rubs off on the other players, then we will have a very scrappy, good team this year. Number 12 JJ had a very impressive game for being the smallest guy on the floor. My estimation of his abilities definitely went up tonight - he has quick release from outside the arc, which helps negate any size advantage his opponent might have on him. He also even snagged at least three rebounds. Not bad for a 5'9" guard! Kyle Cassity will lose his spot to JJ if he does not get in gear, at least he should lose minutes to JJ. Kyle was more of a liability in my opinion than an asset. He threw the ball away several times, he shot poorly, and he does not really bring much to the team. Last year, I was very hopeful that Kyle would develop as a player as he got more D1 experience. This year his start is inauspicious. Selecich had an ok game. It looks to me that he is trying to move fast, but not with an eye for offensive. Majerus was on his case several times tonight when he came off the court, at least that is how it looked from my vantage point. Overall a decent start to the season against a team stacked with former JUCO players. SEMO will definitely have a better record than last year!

  13. The game was enjoyable, Fort Smith was a good opponent for our new team's first game, and it was fun to watch the new players for the first time.

Christian Salecich is going to help this team quite a bit, though he is only able to drive and penetrate to his left. He goes right on the dribble in order to set up his left-hand drives. Future opponents will see this and overplay his left. Hopefully Christian will be able to develop his right-hand drive this year!

Femi John is also going to be a strong addition on the floor this year. I think he is muscular enough to overpower many of his defenders. Hopefully his knee remains healthy - it looked to me or perhaps it was my imagination that he had a slight limp sometimes.

The one interesting thing within the first 3 1/2 minutes of the game is that most (all) of our players were breathing hard and some were holding their sides or knees. Their level of conditioning did not appear great, which is somewhat surprising given that they did not need official practices to start in order to get conditioned. Oh well, hopefully in the coming weeks they get game-shape ready.

  14. It would be very enlightening to know what criteria Forbes used to determine their ranking. I can tell you that no one in academia (me included) would have ranked West Point first and Princeton second. So perhaps your conclusion is correct about SLU's place in the academic world, but basing your argument on Forbes' list is probably not a good idea.

  15. We definitely did not play well enough to deserve to win, but the game might have been more competitive if the referees had called a more fair game. It is hard to imagine that the 18-6 lopsided foul total (prior to the last couple of minutes of intentional fouling) was due to the Billikens committing that many more real fouls. There seemed to be a number of around-the-body steals in the first 10 minutes or so of play by URI that appeared to be fouls. Oh well, I won't feel so bad next time we are the beneficiary of the refs calling a less-than-fair game in Chaifetz. I guess that is the reality of "home-court advantage".

  16. They announced on the post-game show that the attendance was in the upper 9k, 800 shy of a sold out of game. There were more 800 empty seats tonight! I thought I had read that they were going to be announcing the actual turnstile attendance rather than ticket solds, but based on tonight I am guessing they are announcing the latter. Does anyone know for sure?

  17. What a tale of two halves. The first half of the game tonight with NC A&T was horrible; the second half exciting though checkered with mixed opportunities. What most impressed me tonight was the hardnose rebounding that Conklin and Eberhardt displayed numerous times during the game. Berry went VERY strong on several rebounds, and Brian is just a gutsy player inside the paint. Willie also provided some good rebounding effort. His follow-up on Mitchell's missed layup in the last minute of the game was faabulous. Willie is becoming one of my favorite players just because of his hussle. Well, fortunately we walked away with a win. Go Bills.

  18. Number 32 on UMBC is a tremendous player. He was a real gamer, and the best player on the floor last night.

I thought some of the calls against UMBC were not good. There were several touch fouls called in the 3rd and 4th quarter on their big men. The fouls did not appear to be very egregious, at least from my seat near the band. I can understand why some of the UMBC players were getting frustrated with the officiating. That doesn't excuse, however, the tirades the UMBC coach had throughout the night against his own players and the officials. I would not want to play for such a coach given his outbursts of anger. We are fortunate that Majerus does not express very often negative words or body language to the officials or his players during the game.

It was not clear to me exactly why the official gave the UMBC coach the first technical foul. It appeared to me that the coach was not taking an inordinate amount of time to make his substitution, but apparently the official did not like the coach's attitude as he walked his bench. Does anyone know exactly what happened?

One last thing - why did UMBC only have 9 players on the bench and only 7 players played until the last minute or two of the game? Their players were worn out by the end of the game when both teams were playing sloppy.
