  1. why do you think rickma will start recruiting mcdonalds all americans? he pretty much has never done so in his entire career. i am thinking maybe only jensen was one. from my viewpoint of his methods and beliefs i would think a mickey dee player is the exact player rickma doesnt want. he wants the blue collar over achieving balls to the walls player rather than the coddled since 6th grade, i'm only playing one year because i have to mcdonalds all american. maybe i am wrong, but look at his history and show me where i a wrong.

"Majerus' top priority right now is to get sophomore forward Britten Johnson back into shape following his two-year Mormon mission. Johnson was a key reserve on the Utes' 1998 Final Four team, and he is the only McDonald's high school All-American Majerus has ever recruited."

Not too many actually but its possible

  2. i dont disagree that recruiting will get only better. adding biancardi to the mix alone will increase our recruiting as he has that good of a track record.

that said, your "short notice" statement isnt exactly correct. both moser and angres were pursuing reed, thompson and john for a long time. looking back majerus had easy pickings signing those three.

Majerus is gonna be on certain kids that are in 9th grade. Thats the notice I like.

  3. That game last night was perfect for students who don't usually go to games. Although we did not win the game, all the elements were there. Matching up evenly against a very good ranked team and having it come down to a tip-in. Last night made me feel good about our program and the potential fan base out there. In our new arena 800 people there last night would have not gotten in the door. We will play for packed houses all the time, especially when we are the team ranked 14 in the nation. Our new recruits are what Rick got on short notice, its only going to get much better. I am certain SLU bball games will be the thing to do on campus next year, but $10 a seat for students worries me.

  4. This is exactly what I submitted to Cheryl Levick in January 2007 about the internal marketing position:

    Job Description:

-Serve as the liaison between the Saint Louis University Athletic Department and the general student population.

-Serve as the liaison between the Saint Louis University Athletic Department and the Student Government Association, Student Activities Board, Fraternities and Sororities, and student organizations.

-Serve as the liaison between the Saint Louis University Athletic Department and the Office of Student Life.

-Serve as the liaison between the Saint Louis University Athletic Department and on-campus news and media outlets (i.e. KSLU, University News, SLU TV, etc.).

-Serve as advisor to the student spirit organizations (i.e. Blue Crew, Legion 1818).

-Work with student organizations and the Office of Student Life to create activities and events aimed at creating awareness and attendance at athletic competitions.

-Work with Alumni Relations to comprise a working e-mail and mailing list of Alums who would like to continue their involvement in Billiken Athletics post-graduation.

-Create an open, strong, and lasting bonds between the Athletic Department and general student population.

-Promote athletic events to all Saint Louis University students through on-campus promotions (i.e. signs, tailgates, pep rallies, etc.).

-Serve as the Saint Louis University Athletic Department’s voice and presence at all SLU 101 sessions over the summer as well as any other incoming student events to promote athletics as well as to obtain new student season ticket holders.

And this totally ruins springing some of my ideas on them, but I like you guys, so here ya go:

    Objectives & Ideas:

-Develop, write, maintain, and update a weekly Billiken Athletics e-mail list of SLU students to alert them of the week’s athletic events.

-Work with the Student Government Association to create a tangible on-campus “trophy” and/or tradition signifying a Billiken Athletic win.

Ex) a blue light on top of the clocktower each time a team wins a game or sets a new record.

Ex) Billiken “Bat Signal” to shine in the sky each time a team wins a game or sets a new record.

-Develop and manage a “Billiken Athletics Street Team” comprised of at least 5 current undergraduate students to help in promoting athletic events around campus.

-Counter the stigma that SLU students have against the Athletic Department by showing/doing outward support activities for student organizations/campus activities

-Build buzz around the new Saint Louis University Arena by giving bi-monthly updates on the Arena’s progress to the Student Government Association.

-Put a countdown clock in the middle of campus with days/hours/minutes/seconds to the first tip-off.

-Sell BLUE CREW-supporting t-shirts in SLU Bookstore and in Chaifetz Merchandise Store

-Basketball: Scan IDs at the door, where you will be issued your ticket with your seat number on it (based on the number of games you attended the previous season) – Michigan State University

-Pre-Season Campout to make yourself eligible for best seats

-Marquette “Fanatics Rewards Program” – E-Mail students at beginning of school year with how to sign up and create an account

    http://gomarquette.cstv.com/fanatics/rewards-program.html

The Fanatics Rewards Program, NEW for the 2006-07 athletic season is a loyalty based program implemented to commend students for their attendance at Marquette athletic events. The Rewards Program will give YOU the opportunity to earn points / prizes throughout the year based upon your attendance at (men's & women's soccer, volleyball, men's & women's basketball). The more events you attend, the more points you will earn, and ultimately receive prizes.

-Change name of the Billiken Kid’s Club to “The Junior Blue Crew” (or "Blue Crew: Kid's Crew")

-Work with Marketing Department to come up with an opportunity for Senior Marketing Majors to develop a marketing plan to promote attendance at particular sports (different groups of students, each one assigned one sport, none of which being Men’s Basketball)

    - Yale & Notre Dame – Big pep rally before the big games/first games; band, players, head coaches give a big talk to freshmen/everybody

    - At Virginia Tech they developed a program where they asked their Hokie Club Reps (those individuals/volunteers who help their Athletic Fund Office raise money) to help them sell tickets. They developed a reward system where they compensated the individuals for their efforts (i.e. if you sold two new season tickets, you received a poster with the coach's signature on it. The more tickets you sold, the more prizes you won).

    - Using the university credit union. Get the university credit union involved in promoting the team. Print an ad on the back of ATM receipts and/or include it in bank statements.

    - Highlight video. Show highlight video of the sport at halftime of other sporting events (include ticket information).

    - Read public-address announcements for the sport at all home sporting events.

    - Provide opportunity to gain practical experience. Solicit the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in majors such as sport management, journalism, marketing and public relations. Challenge the students to increase attendance and improve promotional efforts of the sport, while giving them practical experience with event management and promotions.

    - Allow students to meet athletics department personnel. Arrange a meeting between the students and any athletics department personnel.

    - Have one athletics department staff member and one member of each of the respective academic departments involved as directors of the program.

    - Guest columns. Get the institution's coach involved as a guest columnist in the University News.

    - Street pole banners. Create street pole banners for the campus and/or downtown light poles.

    - Student media. Ask on-campus, student radio/newspaper/television to get involved and give them some ownership in the sport itself.

    - Market the games as events and create an atmosphere at the site throughout the entire sport season. Use cheerleaders, bands, visual aids and the media.

    - Campus-wide E-mail/voicemail. Send a campus-wide e-mail and/or voicemail message promoting the event.

    - Facebook announcements for games

    wow

  5. NextYearBill,

Super awesome comments regarding fraternity members that heckle the Blue Crew! Not counterproductive at all!

I'm new to the board so I might have missed it, but since your so passionate about this issue, I hope you also ripped Guy Phillips for calling out the Blue Crew over the PA a few weeks ago?

I've watched and had to listen those incredibly annoying guys every game this year. While I'll give you the fact that they are major d-bags and an embarrassment, they are doing nothing different to the Blue Crew that you aren't doing to them on this board. That whole "freedom of speech" thing can be pretty tricky every once in a while. You may hear something you don't like.

Maybe I'm taking this too hard because you've reminded me that I too bought my friends while I was at SLU, but so did a few players and mascots I know along the way. I'm also pretty sure that a great many of the season ticket holders, myself included, were also "dumb enough to join a SLU fraternity."

During a rough season, frustration can and will pervade a fan base. Those with little intellect will always anything and everything...coaches, players, and even "the 6th man" whose attendance or lack thereof has little to do with the team's lack of depth and size. These hecklers may be unbearable to watch and hear at games... (and no offense to this year's Blue Crew) at least they are there.

Winning fixes everything. In a packed house, these guys would become an afterthought.

Dude man chill bro, I wasnt talking about YOURRR frat. Sorry bro. Sig Poo Pie for life

  6. As a former member of Blue Crew, I have to wonder what prompts us to give "Kudos" to this counterproductive moron. This is a group of students that, rather than putting their energy toward the more noble endeavor of recruiting students to come to games as part of Blue Crew, spend their time heckling those that are attempting to recruit fans. I sit behind them every game and have yet to see them spend as much time cheering for the team as they do heckling the Blue Crew. I'm not trying to absolve Blue Crew of its part in the student turnout (or lack thereof), I'm just surprised to see a few of you "regulars" on the board endorsing what seems to be a counterproductive activity to me.

It does seem that a certain frat group goes to games primarily to heckle the blue crew. It doesn't make sense to me. Why would we discourage people for showing up and supporting the team. That frat should take their act on campus and heckle the kids that don't go to games. Making fun of people there to support the team is ridiculous. Why are basketball games all of the sudden cliquey? If any of you frat members are reading this you are all idiots for your actions and being dumb enough to join a SLU fraternity. I'm gonna bring a sign to the next game that says "You Bought Your Friends"
