  1. The link you provided Katz' initial report says nothing about 18 games, and indirectly implies a 16-game schedule since Butler would have to add 3 OOC games to account for the shift from 18 (Horizon games) to 16 (A10 games) and the loss of the Xavier non-conference game.

The change in plans now means both the A-10 and Butler must alter their men's basketball schedules.

Stevens said the Bulldogs now need to schedule three more games for next season. Butler had a series with Xavier that will have to be replaced since they now are league partners.

Here is the more recent post Here is the direct quote from your link

Butler's early arrival will necessitate a number of scheduling adjustments as the league jumps to 18 games from 16, since that’s two fewer non-conference games teams may or may not have scheduled.

  2. They would not be able to do that this year unless they go to 18 conference games. we will probably play Butler twice and everyone else once.

I hope they do expand to an 18 game schedule for 2012-13. I would think most of the schools would be in favor of it. Temple would be against it but that's all the more reason to do it.

  3. First of all, there just aren't that many polished elite low post players in the recruiting pool. The ones that are out there are not going to slip under the radar. They are courted by the dirtiest of dirty programs - so you're probably going to have to pull shenanigans to sign one. They typically don't play 4 years.

That's not the program Majerus is running. Majerus signs unpolished bigs that he believes he can mold into quality players - like he did with Conklin. It's way too early to write off Manning or Glaze. I expect at least one of them to develop into a star, and the other will at worst be a quality rebounder off the bench.

    Re: too many guards

How quickly we forget how easily a player can be lost to injury/suspension/regression. Last year we were fortunate, but unlike previous years we could have survivied if one of our guards had gone down for the year or forgot how to shoot. That's how it should be.

  4. I was asked to remove the post.

    Please elaborate...

Is the problem specifically with the individual selling the shirts? Is there a general board policy against selling merchandise (even at cost)? Does the administration have a problem with it?

Why does the person who asked you to remove the post count more than the numerous people who were interested in acquiring the shirt?

  5. First, Ohio Univ is not even one of the better college programs in Ohio and recently joined the MAC.

You better check this, Clock. I lived in Ohio for more years than I care to think about. OU is not a new kid on the block in the MAC.

Ohio has been in the MAC since 1946...longer than any other current member...they've made the NCAA tournament 13 times

  6. @Duff Man --- your comment is exactly why my comment was "relevant US sport." Soccer is irrelevant to the bulk of this country and I really don't care about what the rest of the world follows. Messi just became the greatest goal scorer in Barcelona's history. I saw the highlights where he scored five goals the other night. Good for him. Do I care? Nope. And I disagree on McBride being "relevant" in 100 years. He'll be nothing more than a prehistoric footnote if American soccer actually becomes relevant.

Soccer has already broken through to become relevant in this country, just as SLU Basketball has recently broken through to become relevant (again).

There will always be mopes who will remain in denial about Soccer's place in American culture, just as there will be locals who will continue to laugh off SLU basketball because they choose to keep their heads in the sand (as if it's some kind of badge of honor to be ignorant).

The mere fact that a hater like yourself is aware of Messi speaks to soccer's relevance. 10 years ago

(an all-time classic goal, to win the biggest club game of the year, from the greatest player of his generation) did NOT make the primetime SportsCenter. Soccer need not be as popular as Football/Baseball/Basketball to be relevant, just as SLU basketball need not be as popular as Mizzou/Blues/Rams/Cardinals to be relevant. They just need to be successful enough in events that the media cannot ignore (i.e. NCAA Tournament, World Cup), which raises the awareness in the minds of non-fans, some of whom will become permanent fans -> more fans = more incentive for media coverage = more relevance.
  7. I am going to guess #20 at Hermann is soccer and not Larry Hughes. Although whomever that 20 is for, Hughes' legacy is far greater in one year in a relevant US sport than any soccer player in the world including even Pele.

    My opinion stinks.

I'm grateful for Hughes' year of service, and I get he had to take care of his dying brother, but his SLU legacy is that of unfulfilled promise.

Brian McBride was the first American to score a goal in multiple World Cup finals - the biggest (MOST RELEVANT) sporting event in the world. In 100 years he'll still be relevant, while Larry Hughes will simply be known as part of Lebron's supporting cast who never won in Cleveland.

  8. I think the vintage TV and hole in wall are a standard part of the Knights Inn experience.

The only time I've ever stayed in a Knights Inn (Nashville circa 2000) they had to send a 'technician' up to the room because the ancient TV wouldn't turn on. The 'fix' involved him pushing the 'on' switch really hard for 5 minutes until it finally turned on. He then proceeded to explain how we could adjust the volume and channel by turning the 2 knobs below the power button...

The walls were cardboard thin and there was a gap between the windowsill and the wall underneath it.

If I remember correctly, the nightly rate was $27.99 (split 3 ways!)

  9. What about Jeff Reid?

Didn't Majerus mention something about Barry Eberhardt when specifically addressing APR earlier this year?

its seems wrong to me to include players that aren't on your roster, punishing players that have nothing to do with the problem. what is the reason for this?

The latest numbers were released in May 2011 and only go through the 2009-10 season.

Anyone know if Willie gets included in the 2010-11 calculation? I would hope not, but he was on basketball scholarship at the start of the academic year.

  10. Here are the top 10 conferences ranked by RPI, with projected number of bids, with total number of teams in the conference in parentheses.

    1 Big Ten 6 bids (12 teams)

    2 Big East 8-10 bids (16 teams)

    3 SEC 4-6 bids (12 teams)

    4 Big 12 5-6 bids (10 teams)

    5 Moutain West 3-4 bids (8 teams)

    6 ACC 4-6 bids (12 teams)

    7 A10 3-4 bids (14 teams)

    8 MVC 2 bids (10 teams)

    9 CUSA 1-2 bids (12 teams)

    10 PAC-12 1-3 bids (12 teams)

4 A10 bids is not a reach, rather it's an unlikely yet plausible scenario that required a series of events to play out as they now have.

  11. I don't think that Xavier is a lock if they lose today.

    You think wrong.

Couldn't the Bonnies take Xavier's place in the bracket if they beat the Musketeers?

    No.

    I just don't see the A-10 as a 4-team bid.

Fortunately you're not on the committee.

  12. There is universal consensus that SLU and Xavier are already in. If you don't believe it, then you're just not paying attention to the bubble situation. A Bonnies win means 4 bids for the A10. 4 bids for the A10 means more money and exposure for the conference.

It's in SLU's best interest for the Bonnies to win.

  13. Games Started

    9. Dwayne Polk (04-08) 105

    10. Chris Sloan (00-04) 101

    11. Erwin Claggett (92-95) 98

    Brian Conklin (08-12) 98

    12. Kwamain Mitchell (08-12) 96

    13. Josh Fisher (00-04) 91

    13. Ian Voyoukas (03-07) 85

    Kyle Cassity (08-12) 85

I know the media guide says Claggett is 11th with 98 games started, but the Billikens.com stats (which I realize aren't necessarily 100% accurate) has

    91-92: 13

    92-93: 28

    93-94: 29

    94-95: 31

    (total: 101)

I'm fairly certain Claggett started every game from his sophomore year onward, with the exception of the 1993 game @UAB which he missed to attend his aunt's funeral, so the discrepancy would have to fall in that 91-92 season when he started either 10 (media guide) or 13 (billikens.com) out of 28 games.

If you add all the GS in Steve's table for the 91-92 season, you get 140 (28 x 5)...and every other stat on Claggett's line correlates with this 1995 draft scouting cheat sheet (which unfortunately doesn't include GS) - so we have no reason to think these numbers are incorrect.

Not the most pressing issue in the world (confirming whether Claggett started the same number of games as Chris Sloan, or 3 fewer)...but would be nice to verify that the records are accurate.

  14. KM is projected to come in

    4th in points dropped

    Just a hunch, but I don't think he's finishing 4th in points...

    1. 1972 Anthony Bonner

    2. 1910 Erwin Claggett

    3. 1880 Roland Gray

    4. 1877 Monroe Douglass

    5. 1703 Scott Highmark

5th is a realistic target given his scoring output this year. He'll need to revert back to his sophomore 16 PPG form to have a shot at passing Douglass and Gray, and even then it's somewhat dependent on how the team does in the postseason. To catch Bonner, he'll need to start averaging 18 PPG from now until the end of next year, not miss any games, and have the team advance a round or two in the A10 and NCAA tournaments each year.
