  1. Is this kid any good?

I don't know. He initially signed with James Madison but for whatever reason was released from his letter of intent. There were some prior (a week or so ago) posts about him. If I recall, the thinking was that he would have to toughen up, but he could shoot from the outside. But we are in need of some big bodies who could give us some minutes.
  2. Anybody have any idea who this kid is? 6'9, African, 2 years of prep school. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out, but I'm not having any luck.

I'm wondering if the "African nation" part of the story in a mistake. My understanding is that Rodrigo Peggau is from Brazil and went to prep school in North Carolina, thus the Charlotte reference. But I'm just speculating. Plus Peggau has an offer and I haven't read anything about him visiting yet.
  3. Adam Knollmeyer is tranferring to Missouri S and T (Former UM-Rolla) and will play for coach Dale Martin. His younger brother, Jonathan may be joining him there as well, moving on from Benedictine.

Good for him. Missouri S and T is Div 2 so he won't have to sit our a year. Also, Missouri S and T is in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, same as NKU. DM and AK will compete against each other.
  4. Protestors want Alton coach fired

    By Terry Hillig

    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

    05/10/2008

ALTON — Demonstrators are calling for the ouster of first-year Alton High School basketball coach Layne Bennett for alleged mistreatment of black players.

They claim Bennett, who is white, has verbally and physically abused players and interfered in the relationship between one mother and her son.

"It's a pattern," said attorney Luther Simmons, a spokesman for the group. He said parents, other concerned citizens and community leaders have complained over several months to Principal Phil Trapani, Superintendent David Elson and the School Board, without success.

I am not getting involved in this dispute one way or another. But to claim these allegations are not based on race is a misreading of the article
  5. Could Willie go to prep school for a yar to make up this credits develop his game and get stronger. That would spread out this class a little. Seems like a good solutin to me.

P.S>]. I looked at jucojunctions top 200 ratings and It showed the bills with interest in only one guy. 6'5 sf Billy Rush. I am hoping this summer brings more recruiting progress.

Wouldn't his recruitment be opened up again just like in the TL situation? There is no guarantee we get him the second time around.
  6. That is a level better suited for Dustin. The Norse of Northern Kentucky play in the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference). The Norse welcomed James Cripe as a transfer from Dayton a few years back (not sure if anyone else remembers this guy). He will have a chance to play such teams as Bellarmine, Drury, Quincy, UMSL, and Rockhurst. SIU-E was in this conference as well. I wish Dustin the best of luck and I look forward to seeing him when they take on UMSL.

It will be interesting to see where the others end up, but that conference in general has some teams that may fit these guys skill level.

The redshirt will really help. He will have 3 years of eligibility left and will not have to sit out a year
  7. AK still had the "deer in the headlights" look 1/2 way thru his second season. That just not acceptable. AK would have to be a repeat of BH before he would ever be able to really help this team - redshirt and then not contribute until his 5th/senior year. I look at it this way - AK had his chance under Brad (and didn't get any clock) and then got a fresh start under RM and still did not get off the bench. In other threads, people posted (without questioning) that JH was this "seasoned" and "experienced" guy but he will only start his second year - that this the same "experience" and "seasoning" which AK brought to the team this year. Sorry, AK, that it did not work out, thank you for your efforts and best of luck in the future.

As to MR, I don't have enough facts but I am not certain he was pushed out the door in the same manner as the others. I understand MR could have stayed but wanted to play and RM was not about to stop him.

Sometimes, there is additon by subtraction. Having your upperclassmen sit while the youngsters play and make mistakes is not always positive.

Are there any rumors floating around as to where either DM, AK, AM, or MR are headed?
  8. Why are we flaming this guy. What was in his posts that were that offensive. I happen to mostly agree with his classification of schools like GZ, Memphis, and X. They do belong in a major category. They recruit well, they dance every year, they play a big time non con schedule. Now Butler? Yeah, some good seasons, but they ain't no Zaga.

I agree. The guy was classy enough to come on this board, debate us, make some decent arguments, agree or disagree, and we nail him to the wall. I don't blame him for getting pissed!
  9. Well, I'm the guy doing the interview. My name is Marc Maggard and I've been a professional basketball scout for over a decade.

For the record, I'm also very close to Drew Diener, who played as SLU and has a cousin who is Majerus's assistant.

I have amazing respect for Majerus and find him to be one of the best coaches in America.

    Now, to my point.....

I didn't put any "pressure" on Josh to say anything. I asked him about the report that he had told SLU that he was going to UK and he said "not yet" so I followed up on that remark.

I generally don't even tell kids that I have a UK site cause I don't want to color the interview, however, I had to call from a KY number and Josh was also aware of who I am before I called, so I didn't want to seem sneaky either.

I take great pride in RECORDING all my interviews so EVERYONE can hear it and see that I don't try to lead kids to say things.....

I've listened to the interview a few times now and am more than comfortable that I did nothing wrong.

So....good luck with next year. I'm far from a SLU hater....in fact, I have many fond memories of my visits to SLU and time spent with Romar on your campus. It's a beautiful campus and I hope to come visit again sometime. Majerus will put you back on the map and field a great team. He's one of the smartest coaches in the nation IMO.

Hey Marc. Thanks for visiting our board to explain what happened. And thanks for your kind words about SLU and Majerus. UK basketball is big time, but I can't believe how far we have come in one year to give you guys a battle for this recruit. I'm looking forward to the next battle.
  10. makes us look like a bunch of whiney little 3rd graders.

Do I wish he had chosen SLU ... yes of course

Do I think his family problem was the sole reason or even the main reason he wanted out at WIU ...No. But, he played a year at Juco and WIU was being ridiculous. He said himself he didn't blame them and deserved to lose the year.

He chose Kentucky ... good for him, it's a great basketball school that should have him playing in the SEC and the tourney for 3 years.

I do personally think playing at home would be great for any kid, but thats my perpective. SLU will win some of these battles, as we improve we'll get even better kids than we have coming now.

Should we follow Josh's career and welcome him home like a hero if he does great... No. There are certain things you give up when you choose to leave.

I don't think we should trash him and act like poor losers either. Where were these opinions before he made his decision. Had he chosen SLU, the fact that he didn't keep his committment and used a family situation to get a release he should have already gotten would be a moot issue. We'd have a 5 page thread on how good he is and how he's the difference in our being a good team and a tourney team.

Josh's facebook page may be immature, and so may he be. I don't know the kid ... hell he's 19. Most of us adults on here have him beat, at least since he made his decision

What Josh should get from SLU fans s nothing, no recognition, no adoration, nothing .... but he doesn't deserve to be trashed.

Good post. We have to let this kid go. It makes us look bad to keep slamming him.
  11. I was giving this kid the benefit of doubt, he proved me wrong.

You said it all with this sentence. He's only a kid. What is he, 19 or so years old? He has Kentucky glory in his eyes. We have some solid kids coming in who could have done the same, i. e., BT could have gone to IU but he didn't. Let's give credit to those kids that chose SLU. Majerus will have others coming.
  12. He is little more than a lying rat. He used the people of St Louis and he used Bernie. I hope Bernie rips him and whoever contacted Bernie about his "plight" a new one. His backing out at WIU probably cost DT, a good guy and who was one of few who believed in him originally, his job. Screw him. I hope he rides the bench down there.

I feel dirty for wanting this kid in the first place. All that talk about his family being the reason why he wanted out at WIU was a lie. There maybe a family situation, but that had nothing to do with him wanting out of WIU.

Take a deep breath. Majerus has brought us into a new era. There will be other disappointments and other causes to celebrate. We have to maintain our cool and character.

GOOD LUCK TO JH AT UK

  13. [/qWe always seem to be improvin but I am tired of that. I want to be good. I want to be in the NCAA tourneys.

Got to give Majerus some time. Rome wasn't built overnight. Look at what he's bringng in this year. He's going to be working hard at next year's group. Look at it this way. When is the last time we lost a recruiting battle with UK? 30-40 years ago. When you're trying to get up on the big stage, you are going to trip some time.

  14. Good Luck Josh, enjoy UK, give us a call in three years and we'll help you find a barber to give you a haircut.

Seriously, enjoy the SEC and UK!

Hey Tee. Now you know what it feels like to lose all those recruiting battles to USC, i.e., V. Hazleton, B Green
  15. What makes everyone assume JH won't be a star at UK? How many of us have seen him play in the last year? To assume that SLU should be the choice because he won't play as much at UK is an unfair knock on JH. If you assume he will start and star at both programs ... SLU still has plenty of things to offer to make Josh decide SLU's the place.

Starring at your hometown school in front of family and friends is something that can't and shouldn't be overlooked. When you add RM's success at putting bigs in the NBA and SLU's superior academic standing ... we have alot to offer. I doubt JH is assuming he will be a role player at UK, with playing time equal, SLU is still a hell of a good choice for him to make. It's been what 15 years since Claggett and less since Ryan Robertson. I'll bet more people in Stl know who Clags is than they do Ryan. Star at SLU and you are a hometown hero for life ...

I didn't assume JH wouldn't be a star. I tried to look at the choice in terms of some probabilities. My earlier post states some of the same pluses about SLU that you are saying. In each of my posts, I have tried to look at it from his eyes and why SLU would be a better choice.
  16. It comes down to who and where do you want to play? Of course your gonna say SLU because the blue blood runs through your vaines but what if your were impartial? RM style can be perceived as very tough and not all kids want to go through that. I know SIU went through that this year and lost some kids because of it. BG style is much different he's much more of a players coach. Rm has had players go to next level so that is very attractive but how much of that had to do with him or recruting top notch players? At the end of the day JH has to do whats best for himself and some of you would say "Well we didn't want him anyway". There is no riskier choice in SLU or UK only the right choice for JH.

I tried to frame my post from JH's perspective. He's going to make his choice from what he believes to be in his best interest, not mine.
  17. There will always be some other Majok though at UK. next year they will try and likely succeed at bringing in a couple 4/5 star big-men. RM may try to do the same the next couple years but will likely have less success. That has to play into his decision making process.

Good point. Furthermore, SLU already has its 4s and 5s for JHs Jr and Sr year with BT, WR, and BC. The probability of getting recruited over are significantly less at SLU than at UK. I'm not saying that circumstances can't change, but JH knows what's at play at SLU. I don't know what UK has on board and how many 4s and 5s they will need in the next 3 years, but it can't be any more favorable for him than what he has at SLU. Moreover, JH has less room for error than kids coming out of HS. He has already essentially lost one year. If a UK decision turns out to be a mistake, his options are limited. The riskier choice is UK.
  18. I wouldn't say they're in decline. But they are having troubles living up to their very high expectations and tradition. Let's just hope JH doesn't want to help them as much as he wants to help us meet ours. One good sign he didn't jump immediately after his visit here to UK. My guess is he's trying to decide where he will be more comfortable. Yes, KY will embrace him like a saviour and shower him in roses at first, but what if they land Majok too.

Read on their board Majok to UConn
  19. If you are talking about Broderick Green, he redshirted last season, has four years of eligibilty left, he will get his chance to prove he can play at USC, it is all about competition there. In Green's case other schools recruit against USC saying you'll never play there, however they have gone to three straight Rose Bowls and 6 straight BCS bowls. Emanuel Moody left USC because he got passed on the depth chart by better players, so he left for Florida only to be buried on their depth chart because the Florida coach sold him the brooklyn bridge. USC doesn't promise playing time, they guarantee excellent competition on a daily basis, the opportunity to compete against the best and the chance at National Championship every year. Trying to compare USC's recruiting in football is like apples and oranges to UK's recruitment of Josh.

In Josh's case UK has the better tradition, better conference, BUT SLU has the better school, coach, facilities, and dare I say UK is a program in decline..??..

Clearly there is a difference in every situation, but I disagree that no comparisons can be made. BTW, how did you know I was talking about Broderick Green? I was under the impression he left USC.
  20. Hey JH, something to think about before you select UK, if that is what you are thinking of doing.

I will use a football analogy. Check out all the 4 and 5 star recruits who select USC every year. Over the last 4 or 5 years, they must have recruited about 100 of these guys. We all here about the 8 or 10 guys who get selected by the pros, but we don't hear about all those top level recruits who rode the pine or who transferred out to go someplace else to get playing time. There are so many top level recruits that go there every year that many good players never get a chance to prove themselves. Then there is the QB (Flacco)who went to Delaware, a division 1-AA school. He got drafted in the 1st round by Baltimore. He was originally recruited by Pitt but transferred out because he wanted to play. What would have happened to him had he stayed at Pitt?

What I'm saying is don't be blinded by tradition or glitz. Sit down and put the positives and negatives down on a peice of paper. In a calm and reasoned way, list your priorities and see which school satisfies want you want out of your college basketball experience. If its glitz and tradition, UK may be your school. If its a higher probability of playing, and of playing before your family and home town folks, and for a coach who has a reputation of putting big guys in the pros, SLU may be your school. I remember this one RB from Arkansas last year who chose USC over my undergard school on letter of intent day. He got all caught up in the glitz of USC. So he chose them. Later that week he reflected on the situation and realized he chose USC for the wrong reasons, he went back to my alma mater and asked them if they would take him if he could get a release from USC. Well to make a long story short he wound up staying at USC. This highly rated 4 star RB recently transferred out of USC. I'm not sure where he is at regarding his career.

Just something to think about if you read this board
