  1. After graduating SLU I did my basic training at Fort Leonard Wood but it was July and August, 1969 and those also were some of my worst life experiences, which seemed far worse after spending four years on a college campus in the early hippie days. I remember one long hair who got all his hair shaved off, stood in line to get a shot and passed out. Unsure of causation.

my basic was jan-mar 1968. i had a student deferment which i eventually lost after grad school. went on to artillery training at fort sill, spent a few months at fort ord (calif), and then on to vietnam to serve with the 1st inf div. came home in sept 69. basic was worse than vietnam. i think the army planned it to work that way.
  2. I guess I should not be too hard on him! When I was in boot camp...Rise and Grind was getting yelled out of bed at 4:30am, then do push-ups, sit-ups, and run a few miles.. Then eat breakfast when it was still dark! Thank the lord those days are over! hahaha!

yikes! brings back bad memories. in the army, it was called basic training. for me, it was fort leonardwood in the middle of winter. the 2 months of basic were worse than anything i've ever experienced.
  3. if WR was in fact punished at the time of his misdeeds, then so be it. i was under the impression that he wasn't. but that still doesn't excuse his treatment at the "court" which was a violation of all standards of fairness. it was in fact a disgrace and done for the purpose of appeasing a big donor, cook i believe.

  4. no what is sad, is slu gave him multiple chances with little to no punishments and he kept ignoring the warnings. the first problem was before the 2010 season ended.)

roy, the purpose of timely discipline for misdeeds is corrective. giving someone multiple chances with no punishment is like saying its ok . had these problems been addressed at the time like they should have been, the outcome might have been different.

  5. but for the kangaroo court, the outcome might have been different, assuming he is gone. this university has lost a lot of its moral authority as far as i'm concerned. one of the posters said he should have been dealt with immediately regarding these "other" infractions. he is correct. the university knows better(so do their attorneys) but they chose this course of action anyway. sad.

  6. A few thoughts on this:

24 guys held off over 100 for over two hours from the low ground without improved positions. That is just amazing.

Do you guys realize that these teams are going out with the express purpose of getting attacked and drawing out the insurgents? That puts you on edge just a bit.

MK19, I know it well snuggled up to one for 35 days straight in the back of my HMMWV we hit a big bump one day and the tripod put a hole through the bottom of my HMMWV.

These Afghan insurgents aren't dumb this was a well planned ambush based on knowledge of US tactics.

A10 Warthog is my favorite. They aren't being made anymore and have been used since Vietnam. Flying slow and low providing close air support that's the type of thing that just get's your [fallic reference].

Is SSG Miller from the STL?

sounds like you have experience in dealing with these things. thanks for your service.
  7. I heard this news on the trolley tour at the Alumni Homecoming last weekend. My first return to SLU since 1964 when I graduated & left town. My CA. born wife was very impressed with the campus today. She would not have been back then. Her highlight was the Cupples house tour, mine was the VB win over X on Sunday. It was a great weekend since I also enjoyed my 50th SLUH reunion. I wonder what both places will look like in another 50 years?

my first look at the slu "campus" was 1965. you are absolutely correct, your wife would not have been impressed. it was hardly a campus. the major positive changes started with the coming of biondi. perhaps others will differ, but that is my recollection over the last 45 years
  8. Just saw on Nate's website that John Manning, the 6'11" 200 lb center from Virginia, committed to play for the Bills. It says he averaged 11.6 points a game last year. Don't know anything else about him.

he has a three star rating from rivals. also, in an article on the the Penn State message board, it appears that majerus' reputation with big men was a factor in his selection of saint louis
  9. Pretty much the rule is that the receiver has to maintain possession after going to the ground. It makes some sense. How well do you actually have possession if the ball pops out?

he had possession of the ball after his body(knee) hit the ground. it was only after the ball hit the ground that it came out. but the replay clearly showed he had total control of the ball until the ball hit the ground. i just think it's a bad rule, especially how it applied to this situation
  10. Curious to see and watch if/how conferences will downsize. To date, we have seen conferences go from 8 to 12 (Big XII), from 10 to 11 and then 12 (Big 10) and from 10 to 12 (PAC 10), etc. Yes, the Big XII just downsized from 12 to 10 but that was from voluntary defections. If the Big 10 or Big East could add ND (football), they'd do it immediately. Wonder if the Big 10 would ask some to leave to just keep growing.

this issue of downsizing came up when penn state was in the process of joining the B10. there was talk of NW leaving. it turned out to be all talk. the simple answer at that time was NO, no school would be asked to leave. i'm not saying that couldn't change, but i seriously doubt the B10 asks any school in the "brotherhood" to leave. the schools are bonded in many more ways than just sports. psu was probably more of a step brother for many years and it is open to debate if they are a full fledged "brother".

  11. You know, I'm pretty sure none of my media brethren have commented on the geographic incongruity if Mizzou had joined/joins the Big Ten. (Not to mention the effects on Nebraska.) At the far periphery of the conference's borders? No direct air service to virtually all the home cities of the other teams, leading to massive lost class times for athletes? The children! Think of the children!

When I was in Detroit Metro Airport last year, I saw direct flights listed to State College, PA. I seriously doubt Detroit has direct flights to State College if PSU was not in the B10. I think that soon there will be direct flights to Lincoln from all the B10 airports
  12. why would this be eckerle's last year?

this will be his 4th year. he probably could apply for a medical redshirt for last year and have one more year remaining. but it is my understanding he wants to go to med school. he wants to get that started. sound reasoning.
  13. It doesn't take a big time program to have issues with police records. Look at semo and st. Bomaventure.

and you can run, what many consider, the cleanest program in america and still have problems. see joe paterno and penn state and the problems they've had over the past decade. this incident over the weekend is not a reflection on the school or the program. it is a reflection on the people involved, plain and simple. neither slu nor majerus have a reputation for this type of thing.
  14. As fans, I hope that we continue to support everyone who comes through our program, no matter how long their stay. I always appreciate the posts that follow transfer players, and I think the folks on this board do support anyone who's worn the Blue and White.

just checked out some stats on some familiar names. adam knollmeyer averaged 24 minutes a game for Mo.U S&T. he was also the leading rebounder. i'd say he made a good decision. good school and got to play a lot

josh harrelson at Ky. he played in 22 games of the 38 played and averaged 4 minutes a game in those which he played. he was the 11th man in terms of minutes played. one year of eligibility remaining, but i doubt the situation improves all that much next year. in my opinion, he made a mistake

  15. i read that neither oregon nor oregon state will play us, so we have a game with portland to serve as conklin's homecoming game. i don't understnd why they wouldn't play us. is it because it is a home and home and they don't want to play us in st louis? or is it that they don't want to play us at their place? i would think they would play us one game at their place, but i could be wrong. what about other homecomings, like for KM or WR?
