  1. The game time for this match has been pushed back ONE HOUR to accomodate Creighton. This means two things: 1) Game time is now set at 8pm, still at Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis University. 2) Legion 1818 and SLU soccer fans will congregate at Vito's between 6:30 and 7pm, so as to get everyone's full fix of beer and food. Hope to see you all there!
  2. Didn't know that, but that's great to know. I agree that we have to be the agressor. We've discussed this numerous times among ourselves, but we want to go one sponsor at a time, and since we're doing that now, I don't want to get into a conflict of interest, or jeopardize the group between two sponsors. And yes, we know we have had the nation's best attendance 3 out of the past 6 years. We also have the most storied program in all of collegiate soccer, and we play in our very own soccer specific stadium (not a park with bleachers). And considering we are hosting the College Cup in December, we have a lot of ways to "sell" our group and SLU soccer to the community at large.
  3. ...sigh... Yes, we need to find some outside income/sponsorship. No, we don't know who or what will give. Maybe we'll talk to Vito's, or maybe we'll ask The Best Steak House to give Legion 1818 members free steak dinners before every game... who knows. There's a lot that still has to be worked out.
  4. Can you even fathom a team with a healthy Grazier, DiRaimondo, VEDAD, JOHN and WARD! Hell, if they were all still playing with SLU, there would be no question that SLU would be playing in the National Championship game on their home turf.
  5. SLU will be hosting Creighton this coming Saturday night, April 29th, at 7:10pm at Hermann Stadium. These two teams have a great little rivalry, and it is sure to be a good night to watch some football. Many of my fellow Legion 1818 founders, including myself, will be at Vito's starting at around 6pm for some pre-match brews and food. If you'd like to be a part of the fun for the night, please come out and join us.
  6. 1. My previous comment is just in that we are the SLU soccer supporters, meaning that, by default, we hate any team the Billikens play. That's the nature of being an 'ultra' or 'hooligan.' 2. I read something a while back (can't remember the source) that said SLU has no interest in playing host to an MLS team in St. Louis at Hermann Stadium. Personally, I think it would tear up the field, cause logistical problems (such as increased seating) and also cause a parking nightmare. Obviously, SLU would have a lot to gain from the venture, but I think MLS and whoever the potential investor is want to own their stadium. That's been the recent business plan behind all these new soccer-specific stadiums in the USA. MLS was LOSING money by renting out facilities like the Rose Bowl, Soldier Field, and the Cotton Bowl. 3. My hope is that a stadium will be built on the Missouri side of the Miss. River. I understand the low cost of building in Metro East, but it's ingrained within most St. Louisians that the East side is 'bad' for various reasons. It would be detrimental on various accounts for the MLS team to call Metro East home. The City/County of Saint Louis needs to find a place for a team to play.
  7. Basically, we outlined our agenda (what we have so far, what we want to get, what to expect, what people can do, etc), and Donigan made a few wonderful comments about the importance of having a "12th man" to really INSPIRE the team to victory at home. A few notes: -Working on sponsorships so that Legion 1818 will be free of dues to maximize participation in the group. -This is a GRASSROOTS movement. We want to keep things simple, but of what we do put out, we want to go ALL OUT. -So far, the only physical things we have right now are a homemade Legion 1818 fist BANNER, and approx 500 business cards with our fist LOGO. -We WANT to have a professional made (vinyl) banner with our logo/name along with a SLU insignia, or sponsor logo; flags (StL city, Missouri, USA, SLU, Billiken, etc); confetti/streamers; AND DRUMS!!! (we are looking into the possibility of getting a couple, at least). -So far, the only thing we have not worked out are the songs and chants we will be signing during games. This is what we NEED INPUT ON! -There's the possibility that the Ath. Dept. will set us up with t-shirts, which would have to be BOUGHT by members. Like I said earlier, we are working with sponsors to keep member financial expectations to a minimum, so things like t-shirts and such would be available, but at a small cost (due to the sponsorship). Billikenmetz (and for that matter everyone else), would you like to be added to our mailing list? If so, you can e-mail us at [email protected] and I'd be happy to add you so that you receive all pertinent Legion 1818 information.
  8. MEETING IS TONIGHT! 8:30pm in Busch Student Center, room 352!
  9. There is a tentative schedule for the meeting tonight. It will also be brainstorming in the sense that we want you guys to ask questions and provide input. Shouldn't last more than 45 minutes.
  10. a few notes i saw: 1) USF and UIC exhibition games at home 2) IU Classic vs. UConn, IU and ND 3) Santa Clara classic, probably vs. SCU, Stanford 4) 6-7 straight homes games in A-10 5) 4-5 straight away game (over multiple weekends) in A-10 along Atlantic Coast 6) Conference championship 7) NCAA Tournament
  11. >Please get us on board with some Nike gear and get the 2006 >schedule. Thanks. Some things are harder to get done than others...
  12. REMINDER! The interest meeting is APRIL 19TH at 8:30PM in the BUSCH STUDENT CENTER, ROOM 352. Come hear what we're all about, hear Coach Donigan speak, and bring your friends and suggestions! PEACE!
  13. Stlsoccer nailed it. It really comes down to money... and even at that, this is something out of the realm of Legion 1818's control. Stuff like championship banners would have to be done by the Athletic Dept. I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't already thought of that considering the College Cup will be here in December.
  14. It's also a common trend where these new soccer specific stadiums are being built outside of the downtown areas. Obviously, land is cheaper in the suburbs, thus the move to Carson, Commerce City, Bridgeview, Frisco, Harrison, and that other place in Utah. Obviously, it would be much better for a stadium to be built in downtown STL, like the Dome, Busch and Savvis... but don't be surprised if talk of a stadium ends up in Maryland Heights, Chesterfield, St. Charles or even South County. Let's just hope this happens though.
  15. The issue over a stadium is a HUGE hurdle to overcome. I've heard that MLS approached SLU about upgrading Hermann Stadium for MLS standards, but SLU refused, for unknown reasons. And besides that, there really is no suitable place to play, unless some $$$ owner wants to pony up $100mil for a new stadium. Honestly, I'd love to see MLS in St. Louis, but I just don't know about how it would work out. Sure they could get an owner, but getting a new stadium off the ground in 2 years time (from now) is highly unlikely.
  16. To all Billiken fans: This Wednesday, April 19th will be the first ever general interest meeting for Legion 1818. It will begin at 8:30pm and take place in the Busch Student Center in room 352. I encourage all SLU- and soccer-friendly friends to join us as we will outline the group's mission and goals, as well as hear from Coach Donigan and our faculty advisor, Mr. James Cahill on the importance of the community (not just students) within our ranks. We are thinking big, and hope that the 2006 season brings about a new era in Billiken athletics. See you all there, and bring your friends (and comments too!). PEACE
