  1. -i don't know the facts but i would be shocked if there is a straight division of the ncaa units

-i have to believe the teams earning the units get more than those that do not, but this is the wsj so maybe

-but every school in the conf does get more the more units the conf teams accumulate

    -go X, Temple and UD!!!

I'm almost positive that there is some sort of matrix used to distribute Tourney funds. I've seen it on the A-10 boards before. I'll take a look and see if I can find it.

  2. Xavier is far from invincible, though you wouldn't have guessed that if you've only seen their dismantling of SLU to start the A10 season. I'll add my two cents, as a SLU fan who's seen Xavier a lot more than SLU this season.

-Point guard play is definitely a weakness for Xavier, as Terrell Holloway has struggled down the stretch and Dante Jackson has been forced to play PG, not a natural position for him (Xavier had a couple other guards (Crawford from Indiana and Mark Lyons) have to sit out this year). They'll both cough it up if pressured, but Jackson is a lot tougher mentally so he's harder to crack. Xavier, interestingly enough, used very, very tight ball pressure against Dayton last week and forced London Warren to cough it up a lot, especially early on. Neither of their guys is as terrible as Warren, but that game tape would be good for Rick and co. to watch.

-Xavier shoots a ton of threes. We guard the three better than just about anyone. Hopefully we can neutralize this threat. The problem is we don't have someone who naturally matches up well with Raymond, who will take a lot of them but is big enough to push things inside, too. They've also got Redford, who has infinite range on his shot and a green light at all times if he's got space.

-We're not going to score much inside today. Frease and Love are big and physical, and our bigs are young and skinny. I've seen Xavier give up a lot of points in transition this year, but that's not our game, unfortunately. I hope we're shooting well.

-Derrick Brown did not have a strong A10 season after a promising start. He's been a lot more tentative offensively lately than he should be. I still see him, Raymond, and Anderson as matchup problems for us, though.

-Xavier had a rough road season in the A10 after only 2 non-conference losses, so they're more beatable away from Cintas. If neutral court games are any indication, things don't look good because they won that Puerto Rico tip-off tournament, beating VT, Mizzou, and Memphis. That was also a long time ago, when Holloway looked flawless and other teams hadn't hit their strides.

I concur with Pistol's assessment. Xavier lately has not played well away from home. I'm not predicting by any means, but it would not shock me if X lost this one on a neutral floor. After the last month, I've prepared myself for any possibility in March. Teams have shot well against X lately and the team doesn't seem to be as quick to the ball as earlier in the season defensively.

PG: Holloway and Jackson have both played better the past couple of games at the point. I'd still give the edge to K. Mitchell.

SG. Raymond has been solid. But he's still a streak shooter. Redford is great as a back-up. I don't have quite the crush on him that other Musketeer fans have, but there is no denying his range.

SF: CJ Anderson is hurt and has played poorly the last ten games. He is tough as nails though.

PF: Derrick Brown has had a quiet junior year based on what was expected of him

C: Love will be tough down low. It'll be interesting to see which Frease comes to Atlantic City. Will you get the one that was A-10 Freshman of the week? or the tentative Frease around the hoop.

SLU's best chance today is to force tons of turnovers.

I'm looking forward to a great injury-free game from both squads.

  3. Why, why, WHY would this ceremony be after the game? Once again, this athletic department has dropped the ball. Embarrassing. I've never been to another senior night for any program where the festivities weren't held before the game. Xavier did it like that the other night, and there wasn't an empty seat in the house- it was so loud during Anderson's and Raymond's intros that you couldn't hear the PA guy's comments about them.

Tommie and Kevin probably regret not going with one of their other offers at this point.

The A-10 only allows 20 minute ceremonies before a game. If the ceremony is longer it comes after the game or some other time. Supposedly this is to keep some sort of level competition for the visitor as apparently the A-10 doesn't want crowds being whipped into a frenzy with a 45 minutes senior night celebration. I'm not sure this policy is actually effective. Cintas was rockin Thursday night.

  4. i personally think the watermellon thing is a terrible idea. as are being vulgar to the other teams players and our own fans (as some people in this forum are). If somebody on the other team has a dui or something, that definitely warrants a taunting. Not rumors started about a team 5 years ago. Lets stay classy billiken fans. Lets be a fan base that people don't think is trashy. And this whole perception can be done by just a few people. Please, think about what you say and do before you do it.

    GO BILLS!!

Just to be clear, there are many X fans who hate the whole watermelon thing. I can't stand it myself, and know many people who feel the same.

  5. It was probably better that it didn't get around fast enough. The watermelon thing was made up by a Xavier fan at a X website. The fabricated story concerns UD players who have been gone from there for 5 years. For X to do it is one thing, seeing as it might be considered to be a "tradition" for them, but for SLU to plagiarize Xavier's made up, 5 year old story is rather lame. I'm sure the Blue Crew has the creativity to come up with their own ideas.

If you guys are interested in the whole watermelon thing... there are many X alum who are tired of it and willing to give it up. I've always personally thought it was the dumbest thing. But whatever.

Just wanted to congratulate you guys on the big win against UD. Hopefully X fairs better on March 5 than they did in Dayton.

  6. I just had someone e-mail me that same article. Love this comment:

I think Dayton needs to re-examine its admisssions policies. Or establish some admissions policies.

Because clearly UD arena is much better than Cintas or Chaefitz...

I for one don't think X will leave until SLU does and I predict it will likely be to the same conference. The institutions are too much alike.

  7. I thought BT outplayed Frease when they matched up last night. It should be fun 4 years to watch them compete against each other.

I thought so as well. Kenny looks awkward down low right now for X. He's still adjusting from the HS to college game. I'm guessing BT is getting more minutes than Frease right now. However, I do think Frease will progress as the season goes and Thompson/Frease and Mitchell/Holloway matchups are going to be big over the next few years.

  8. Has anyone read the 2 XU boards?

    Both boards have:

"The official I HATE SAINT LOUIS Thread"

If you want a good laugh, check them out. In addition to the usual what is a Billiken posts (you figure they know by now with all those years in the MCC and now about 4 years together in the A10), I didn't know 1/2 the XU students applied to both SLU and XU and decided XU over SLU

I guess all that great feeling and gumbaya (however you spell it) noted at the beginning of this thread is out-the-window :(

They're tradition. A get fired up kinda thing. If you do a search you'll find one for almost every game the Musketeers have played over the last few seasons.

  9. Nice site, Xfactor. Looks like you guys have multiple options, with yours and Musketeer Madness- is there much crossover between members?

As for your second comment, it should be a no-brainer for anyone in charge of the league. The vast majority of fans on both sides agree on this. SLU, Xavier, and Dayton should all be playing each other twice a year, regardless of who the third opponent is for each.

Uh... Musketeermadness was the only site for a very long time. I actually started that site about 1.5 years ago I believe. I know many of the XH posters are former MM posters, and there's a little bit of a cross-over.

I'm just excited for a good conference basketball game.

  10. Went over to the X board to see what they thought of SLU. What a welcome change from most of the folks over on SIU-c's board. Although they expect X to win, and objectively speaking, who wouldn't, they are generally pretty classy with their comments.

Thanks for the compliments (if you're talking about XH, it's my site).

I really wish the A10 would wisen up and make XU-SLU a permanent home and home.

  11. I may sound a little harsh because I truly belive that both teams will be really good eventually I get frustrated sometimes because the loss of Graves and Green is bigger than anything SLU or SIU lost yet they don't seem to have missed a beat. I think it is frustrating because I don't see anything about Butler that is better than SLU or SIU.

SLU and SIU both have 6 freshman who are playing well and were all winners in high school and who have shown flashes of brilliance in every game. What is it about our 2 systems that require development while Butler seems to move on without missing a beat. I don't want my post to come off as a knock on any players because it is not but I think it is a legitimate question to ask. Why them and not us?

X can't hit FT's right now. It's something that's been gaining on them for awhile, and finally caught up to them in the past couple of games.

  12. As Div. I programs, Toledo and Fort Wayne cannot be exhibitions for Xavier. Division I programs can play exhibitions against lower division teams or they can have closed scrimmages against Div. I teams.

For some reason I thought the X vs. Toledo game was a scrimmage, or at least that was discussed at some point. It doesn't look that way now the way it's on the schedule.

  13. I think you'll find a better turnout for your students now that you've got an on-campus "Palace" (I mean that sincerely, it looks like a great place to watch a game. When I was a student at X, i had to ride a school sponsored bus to the Cincinnati Gardens to watch the games or hitch a ride from a friend who was driving.

If X was playing UMASS or someone good, then student attendance was excellent. If not, it was only the real basketball fans. SO fear not, I think your days of Student apathy about coming to games is over. Now if you can just get them to cheer once they're in the place.

  14. Considered is the key word. He was never offered a scholly. I'm thrilled to have this kid but it would be a mistake if anybody said we stole him from X (not saying you did).

A nice pick up for SLU. Seems to fill a need, which is always nice to do, as opposed to stockpiling players at one position.

I don't recall if X offered him a scholarship or not. We've only got two (if you think Derrick Brown is going Pro after this year) or one left for 2009.
