  1. Just spent a bit in Manhattan, including two days walking around in my Billiken t-shirt. Went into a wine store in SoHo, and both guys in there go into the "what the hell is a Billiken?" routine. One of them had gone to Wake Forest and was there when we barely lost to them in the NCAAs.

On the way home sat on the plane next to the wife of Jerry Strange, whom she said played under Benington and went to the NIT one year (which I assume was probably '60-'61, when they had a very good record). Any of you altecockers remember Strange? [Edit: We went in both '60-'61 and '62-'63; Strange would have played in the latter season.]

I do recall that he went to CBC and played on the 1960 state championship team.

  2. You started the thread to let everyone know about ST. JOES new gym and you added your thoughts on NIVINS and BROWN and how you wanted Nivins to do well.

Why on earth are you here? Why don't you post on the St. Joes and Xavier board? Who cares if their players do well in the NBA? So this is your logic -

So is Majerus going to recruit harder than he would have because two guys from rival schools got drafted in the second round? How about we sign guys that get drafted? That's the easiest way for the Bills to become a better team, not buy having other schools do well.

I am a Billiken fan. That's why I post. I'm not a fan of your Xavier ball club and hope they go 0-30 next year. Just because I don't share your "hooray, let's have everyone do well" attitude doesn't mean I'm not a Bills fan.

Pistol, I'm on board with your logic. But don't get into a battle of wits with Postie...he's only half-armed.

  3. you all need to reread my two posts in this thread. all i did was post that rickma was mentioned and then i corrected rich that the cbs columnist was not a usc person.

please show where i editorialized negatively.

Roy, I rarely post and have generally supported your opinions in the past. But, I agree, it's getting really old my friend...and quite childish at this point.

  4. In hindsight, I might have crossed the line. But my intentions were sincere. I don't get the fascinaton with hearing about the Fordham baseball team because Fordham is a Jesuit institution. I've brought this up before when people get really geeked up about playing other Jesuit schools. I don't understand why it matters. It's not like a big prayer circle is going to start up before the game. It's a sporting event. The fact that some of the observers may or may not share similar religous beliefs is meaningless.

As far as Ace goes, your only purpose on this board is to antagonize. You rarely if ever respond or address the points brought up in threads. You are one to talk about repeating the same tired act. You're just as bad as anyone, myself included. The only difference is I actually support the Bills and you don't.

Postie, Just because you don't care about something, it's arrogant to suggest that no one else should either. Talk about cluttering up a message board...look in the mirror, son. It's a big world out there with fine people with many different interests and opinions to share. An innocent post like this (which I enjoyed, by the way) should not invoke such behavior. Makes you look silly and narrow minded. Get out of your basement occassionally.

  5. Trey, I hope you keep posting, but my opinion is the same for everyone-- brother or not. There should be lines, but in fact there often are not.

One example has already been hammered: you said, "He's made some bad choices that have really changed what I thought about him as a person." I'm glad you later apologized, but please realize that forgiveness is not equal to trust. So, that trust must now be rejuvenated. I agree with your own judgment: that you did cross the line with that mean-spirited comment.

The irony here is that so many others on here often post vicious and mean-spirited comments, so yours is hardly alone. For whatever reasons, a lot of folks have hammered you. Go figure.

Personally, I dislike it when ANYONE on here does that, and I used to be VERY vocal about it, until I was instructed by my younger colleagues that evidently saying scurrilous things about our players was OK -- at least, some think so. Personally, I do not do that, and refuse to do it. I think most guys on here would agree with me, but a loud minority feel it is proper do do otherwise.

This is the culture we live in, sadly; overly critical, values wildly out of whack, and the Bill Mahers of the world making millions taking pot-shots and modeling such tasteless behavior as not only acceptable but highly lucrative. Again, go figure.

It's easy to accumulate a lot of dirt on any number of folks associated with college sports (there are many, many things I could announce to the world, if I wanted to sound like I was "in the know" or somehow superior), but I do not think an internet board is the place for such matters. Many on here disagree with me, so I rarely voice these complaints anymore. I guess today is your lucky day. And I believe I speak for the silent majority.

Well stated, Doc. You certainly speak for me.

  6. I was always under the impression that the PA person's job was to announce important aspects of the game like who fouled who for example not be Henny Youngman. Do you really think the PA announcer at the Cards games would get away with making jokes during the game and poking fun at fans who find themselves picked for some dumb contest? - I doubt it.

cheeseman is spot on. I've never heard a PA announcer who brought so much attention to himself. It's so unprofessional that I'm almost embarrased for him sometimes.

  7. This was a team and program CL helped build. Know it is time to see if Chris Mays is up to the task.

Cheryl did a terrific job in upgrading these other sports, which for too many years were mediocre at best. The university should not allow these programs to slip back again. Having consistantly strong teams in volleyball, baseball etc. I think uplifts every other sport in the program.

  8. I certainly understand the problem of implementing new programs but they have had plenty of time to get this one off the desk and on the road. I have been delaying travel plans since my number last year was 305 and I could not take the chance that I might drop lower. The dates they announced for the first 300 to pick was when I was suppose to leave and I put all of that on semi hold waiting for this letter. They need to stop dicking around and get this letter out asap - my patience is running thin.

cheeseman, That's my situation too (on the bubble with pending travel plans) and why I called when it wasn't in the mail. I know that another week delay won't be a problem for most folks but would be concerned if the pre-established rules are being manipulated. Don't like to think they'd do that, but hard to refuse a contribution, albeit after the deadline.

  9. You're so experienced. Please come back when you learn how to understand WTF is going on. You got on your high horse and said "this is about parenting" and when I correctly pointed out you didn't know what you were talking about you failed to answer my post. So, don't go calling people out when you don't know what you're talking about in the first place.

"I correctly pointed out that you didn't know what you were talking about"...Postie, go back to your Logic 101 and look up "begging the question". Aristoltle called it "circular reasoning". I think you get the idea.
  10. Too many variables. Things go terribly wrong all the time. I think you get them out ASAP, and deal with them accordingly at home.

Wrong, young man. Come back when you actually have some life experience to apply. There's many things you understand so little about, which is understandable at your tender age, but why do you insist on making an ass out of yourself so often?
  11. He's not my hero, and this isnt new news. He plead guilty long ago. I'm not applauding his actions, I just dont see how bashing him is going to prove anything.

However, V, this is new news. "He's not my hero..I'm not applauding"...that's pretty tepid. Step up for a change. Irons has absolutely no redeeming virtues...none! And all of his self-righteous, race card-pulling crap looks very embarrassing now, don't you agree? He deserves everything he's getting.

  12. I'm referring to your lack of any response to your hero's admission of pay for play. That doesn't bother you at all? The hills being low level D1 athletes is really beside the point.

You are something V. Not quite sure what though.....

Rich, I too was astounded at that response. I think if you asked V whether he'd rather have his son play for Anthony Bonner or Floyd Irons, he'd still say something like "it depends on whether he's a forward or guard". V knows his basketball, but I'm afraid he's pretty shallow otherwise.

  13. I also think nark's idea makes good sense. That way the entire donation gets credited to a single account and thus maximizes the "ranking" benefit for the whole group. But, yes, some has to get kicked back by the account owner to the individuals, 'cause he's the one who gets the tax deduction.

  14. I have six tickets in my name that I've shared with five others for many years. In the past, they just made their check payable to me and I wrote one check to SLU. How best to handle this now? Is the tax deduction applicable to just the season ticket holder of record or can each of my buddies take it individually? This may have a slight bearing on whether some of them will be priced out of the new arena and I want to give them the correct information. Thanks.

  15. From the few times I've met Brad, I couldn't disagree more. I have nothing to offer him at all, but he's always been very gracious. For all the homage given to Spoonhour, I've run into him on a couple of occassions and he was always very dismissive. Just my personal experiences, for what it's worth.
