  1. My favorites from my SLU student days were: 1) the entire Larry Hughes year  and 2) during 1998-99 where we beat Kansas, Cincinnati, and Louisville at Kiel

My favorite since then was the tourney weekend in Columbus in 2012 beating Memphis and almost pulling the shocker vs Mich State. It was awesome being there for that.

Oh, interesting. Two different Cincinnati watch parties and they're about a mile apart from one another. That seems...counterproductive.

Agree - I wish one was 100 miles up the road in Indy - I think it’s great though that they are being set up

  3. I was actually impressed with Ford’s coaching the past 2 seasons with little talent and short benches. This season however I have been very unimpressed and felt he has been thoroughly outcoached in every one of our losses.

I never miss a Billiken game but don’t enjoy college basketball near as much as I used to due to all the transfers, one and dones, etc. Gordon is a prime example of everything wrong with the game. But the number of players kicked off the team and left the program under Ford has taken it to a new level.

I don’t see anything that can get Ford fired after this year but his coaching and ability to keep players has to improve and improve immediately.

That was the most horrendously refereed game I have ever personally been at. Absolutely no consistency. They get away with murder on defense and then we get called for tacky touch šhit. Unreal.

With that said, our free throw shooting is awful. And too many stupid turnovers. With Goodwin I have no doubt we’d have secured the four seed with at least one win in the last two.

It was very very bad. But nothing even comes close to the referees from the Houston game back in December (of course the 1 game I saw in St. Louis this year). That was the worst officiated sporting event I have ever seen.

To all of those that were on the dump Biondi train. this is proof that you should be careful what you wish for.

Fr Biondi was not liked because he made hard decisions (not all decisions will please everyone); Dr Pestello is not liked because he can not make hard decisions.

It is hard to imagine that there was not a qualified Jesuit available in North America to run the oldest Jesuit university in the US & we got this guy?

    Saint Louis University deserves better.

  6. I agree with you that university leadership needs to be looked at and a crisis management team is a great idea. I definitely do not have any confidence in Pestello's leadership, or lack thereof, and my thoughts about the school won't change until he is gone. I was sick of Biondi towards the end and felt it was time for new leadership but it is sad we went to the level of Pestello. Biondi over his time at SLU did phenomenal things for the school and too bad his successor has been nothing but an embarrassment.

i had the same reaction as most on this board when I heard the news, our team is doomed for awhile. The more I think about it for the time being I am just trying to stay positive. I am not like others already saying they won't be a fan going forward (they likely never were true fans to start) and are already looking for other teams. SLU is my school and always will be. If we take some huge steps back, I will still watch all games I can but maybe I won't take the 2 hour trip to Dayton as much, or won't make the 4 hour drive to STL  as often but I will ALWAYS be a fan.

If Gordon decommits, Ford leaves, French leaves, etc then I will officially say we are screwed for the indefinite future and will be more similar to Duquesne or Fordham than Dayton/Xavier etc. Hopefully those don't happen and Ford and his recruiting/ relationships can keep us in a good position.

I am a frequent reader but don't post very often so thanks for letting me share my thoughts!

  7. It is hard to disagree with anything said here. I don't post much on this board but read it frequently and watch every game on TV (attend a few a year). This is the most frustrating year so far in the 25+ years I have watched SLU (and I was in the 4th row sitting by Taj at the infamous 20 point game at GW). I thought it got off to a pretty good start and thought they might be improving upon last year's disappointment. However since the 2nd half of the Lousville game it has been embarrassing.

I thought Crews did a fine job taking over for Majerus but he even admitted he had to do little coaching since the kids ran Majerus' system. But looking back on it, with the losses to Oregon and Lousville, he really held us back then as well. If we had Majerus those years we could have made a serious run at the Elite 8 or at least Sweet 16.

The worst part particularly in recent games is how flat we come out in the 2nd half. One thing that spoiled us about Majerus was even when we got off to slow starts, Majerus was the best at making the necessary adjustments at halftime to turn the game around. Crews is the complete opposite and gets outcoached every game. The last two games were the worst with the 22-2 run by Indiana State and than the run by SIU last night. Even in our bad games I watch every second of the games but I have been more than happy to fast forward through the last two 2nd halfs. So between not deciding on his main starting guys and just getting outcoached in every aspect, I don't know how he still has a job.

Crews should have been fired yesterday and I wrote Chris May saying exactly that and I encourage others to do the same. The last thing we want after being brought up by Majerus to a solid program is to go down the tubes to worse than we were previously and that is exactly what is happening which is very sad and action needs to be taken now to get rid of Crews and try to turn things around when we can. Another year or two of this and it will be much harder.

Lastly about Crews, I live in Indianapolis and know somebody at work who has friends who go to the church Crews did a couple years ago and he was told Crews seemed very happy in retirement until which time as Majerus recruited him out of retirement. So in addition to him just not being a good coach, I really wonder how much his heart is in it.

Merry Christmas to everybody out there in Billiken land.

  8. Trust me - no way will he be on the final roster - there is a reason all other teams passed on him and no not for the reason most people associate him which I am sick of hearing about - he will not be a good (or any) NFL player for that matter

i also think it is a disservice everybody is talking about him more than all the higher drafted individuals who deserve more attention

The Rams will keep him, no way they can cut him. He'll play some special teams. Get into to a few games.

  9. I don't post often but have to say this is the worst I have seen them play in years, downright embarrassing in every way shape and form. I just hope Evans and Jett get into form if this is their last game.

also I said after last year crews had to be offered the job but have not been impressed with him AT ALL this year esp the second half of the season

  10. YOUR POSTS TONIGHT AFTER A WONDERFUL SEASON ARE A PATHETIC JOKE. CREWS DID A GREAT JOB WITH THIS TEAM UNDER DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES. ANY TEAM CAN HAVE AN OFF SHOOTING NIGHT WHILE ANOTHER TEAM SHOOTS LIGHTS OUT AND THAT IS THE RECIPE FOR AN UPSET. I WILL NEVER, EVER UNDERSTAND THE RIDICULOUS NEGATIVITY BY SOME ON THIS BOARD. WE JUST FINISHED THE BEST SEASON IN THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM WITH THE MOST WINS AND THE MOST WINS OVER RANKED OPPONENTS. WE WERE RANKED 13TH IN THE FINAL REGULAR SEASON POLL EVEN THOUGH WE PLAYED HALF THE SEASON WITHOUT OUR SENIOR POINT GUARD. GIVE US ALL A BREAK AND SHUT DOWN THE STUPID SIGNATURE!

couldn't have said it better - this Board would be much better if Rich took a permanent hike

  11. I've only been around for 18 years, so I guess I don't remember too far back, but this loss hurts more than any I can remember. This season just seemed special. With everything that happened with Kwamain's injury and of course Rick's death, I saw us making a magical run to at least the FInal Four. We just seemed destined to do it for Rick. I stormed the court at home against Butler and went apish!t at Hinkle when we went in there and won. This team was special. And then tonight happened...

Still, I can't be mad at this team. They played their hearts out every game. They had the best season in Billiken history. Furthermore, all of the players are good people. I'd rather be a fan of this team, even if it means never witnessing a Final Four run, than of a team like UNC or UK where players are shipped out every year and then forgotten. I know I will never forget this year's team.

At the start of the year, I was against Crews being named interim head coach. I didn't think he was a good motivator and I questioned many of his methods. Back then, I would've much rather seen a young coach come in and make the program his own. I am very happy to have been proven wrong. In the end, it is obvious that Crews was the right choice. Instead of taking a talented team and reshaping things, potentially dumping all Rick had done down the drain, he gave the guys some continuity in the wake of Rick's death. I would be ecstatic with an extension for Crews.

In the wake of this disappointment, it is important to realize we will be very good next year. Maybe I will get let down again. That's the risk we take as fans. If it means I get to witness anything as special as this season, I'd be fine with that.

Even though I am still very frustrated about how we played tonight, I couldn't have said this any better myself. I absolutely loved watching this team and am already excited for next year.

  12. 11:10am local? Arena will be empty. Move down and be loud if you're going.

Can't agree more. I thought they wouldn't have a game until at least noon local time (i.e. 2 Central) but they are. It will be a ghost town in that arena to start.

  13. Here is thoughts on Crews in the most recent Andy Katz posting on ESPN in case anybody is interested.

    1. Saint Louis and Jim Crews are respecting the season and not making the next head coach a distraction. This season has been about this team and the late Rick Majerus. It is a selfless act by Crews, who has filled in for Majerus exceptionally well and deserves consideration for national coach of the year. According to Saint Louis, there isn't a rush to push for the naming of a permanent head coach. I respect that decision. But let's not dismiss what Crews has done under extraordinary circumstances. He had to take over a team not knowing if Majerus would return in the summer, only to learn he was gravely ill and then be there for his funeral. Crews was a moderately successful coach but just at tough locations in Evansville and Army. I'm not sure too many people could have handled this situation any better than he has done. The entire staff gets credit. If he wants the full-time coaching job, and at the appropriate time after the season, then this search should be done.

    2. Ryan Kelly is now doing individual workouts, according to the Duke staff, but not contact drills. There is growing optimism that Kelly will return before the end of the regular season. Duke has a monster week with games at Virginia and hosting Miami, giving the Blue Devils a legitimate shot to still catch the first-place Hurricanes, whom they trail by two games. But that isn't the real issue here. If Kelly comes back for the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament and is at least somewhat effective in creating attention for the defense and take some pressure off Mason Plumlee then the Blue Devils have to be considered one of the contenders for the national title.

    3. I love that Indiana coach Tom Crean constantly is looking for outside sources of support and teaching from other sports. He has had Tony LaRussa speak to his team and in years past sought out advice on how franchises are built across all sports, including tradition-rich ones like the Montreal Canadiens. Of course, he has a great resource in the family in his two brother-in-laws. So it was of no surprise that when Jim Harbaugh, the coach of the 49ers, was in Indianapolis he stopped by for practice last week and spent time with IU point guard Yogi Ferrell and talking to him about court vision, much like a quarterback. Crean said the talk was beneficial.
