  1. Hah, I was being (sort of) sarcastic. I know plenty of reasonable people who root for both. But I think hanging out in online forums (and Mizzou or SLU-favored bars) kinda skews your perspective a little bit. Mizzou's administration refusing to schedule SLU and generally acting like SLU is the little brother doesn't help matters, either.

I personally think it's a manufactured storyline. It's not a historical rivalry so i'm not outraged when it doesn't happen. It'd be a lot of fun for sure.

  2. I remember once upon a time when I thought I could be a fan of both SLU and Mizzou. lol I was so ignorant.

You really can be, contrary to the beliefs of posters here. I'm a much bigger Mizzou fan because it's my alma mater but I grew up watching the Billikens so I'm a fan of them as well.

(cue all the posts telling me this can't possibly be true)

  3. Also, how can any Big 5 basketball program justify paying it's basketball coach more than it's football coach from hear on out. Football is the reason for the big money TV deals. The days of people like Coach K making huge money compared to the football coach are numbered.

For what it's worth I agree with you. 3.2 Million a year would be the 7th highest salary in college basketball. Not worth it.

  4. Is Haith getting paid more at Tulsa than Anderson at SPU?

He's getting 1.7 million for 7 years, which is less than he was making at Mizzou, but presumably 6 more years of money than he would have gotten from Mizzou. Anderson is making 1.1 million guaranteed with incentives that can push it to around 2 million.

  5. link?

"Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall also was contacted about the job. His agent said Monday that Marshall met with Alden and “was very impressed with Mike’s vision and leadership and with the potential of the Missouri basketball program” but that the timing was off to even consider leaving the Shockers."

  6. No, those were the three names that appear to have been involved in the actual search... there was a LOT more FAN speculation than that - Mack, Cronin, Matta, Wright, Miller, Smart, Kruger. I don't care enough to go back and look, but there were more.

Okay but as I referenced, a few fans throwing names at the wall doesn't mean "delusional fanbase." Missouri is an attractive job. It's not the MOST attractive job but Sports Illustrated rated it the best job to open up this year. You don't have to agree with that (and I'm not even necessarily saying I do) but while not being a destination job it can draw interest from a lot of coaches.

If Gregg Marshall was willing to meet with Alden to talk about the position (which he did), I think that speaks to the attractiveness of the job itself, regardless of him not taking it.

  7. +1 Beat me to it. I don't recall anybody seriously considering Bobby Knight, so that's ridiculous. If this job was good enough for RM, I think it would have been good enough for two coaches who were unemployed at the time. Also, being a Top 25 team at the time with most of the starters coming back was another plus. Mizzou fans are far more delusional about how attractive their job is.

The fact that no one took Bobby Knight seriously doesn't take away from the fact that a couple "delusional" fans posted about it.

The vast majority of talk in any Mizzou forum centered on Kim Anderson, Ben Howland, and Gregg Marshall as an admitted longshot by most people. How is that delusional?

  8. Heck, it seems like most on this board undershoot when talking about coaches and bring up names of current or former assistants that have never been the head coach anywhere.

True but I remember a thread before Crews officially got the job that named Howland, Tubby Smith, and Bobby Knight as potential replacements for RM. I'm not trying to say everyone on this board shoots for the moon, just that every "potential new coach" period on internet fan boards includes a little bit of delusion.

  9. So what?

He just got scammed, for money and spite, by a woman who taped him, so he got caught. How many comments are made every day that are not recorded?

Let me know if you think all of the black players in the NBA are 100% clean, never candidly made any racist remarks themselves. It definitely works both ways.

He is a typical super rich powerful man who has gotten away with everything his whole life. I do not condone what he said, it appears he is a racist jerk but lets be realistic, at least on this board. On the other hand, the foo foo national media will run with this for months.

I can't believe this board doesn't call you out more often for your indefensible positions.

  10. I think this is good for SLU.

    Kim is a plug.

No top notch coaches will go there now with the big mess with Missouri athletes and the athletic department.

So bring in Kim, try to sell everyone that he is a Mizzou grad, blah blah lets get back to our roots, but kids do not care about the Norm Stewart era and will not recognize him as a big time coach coming from Central Missouri State. CMS? WTF?

SO it is patchwork time, good coaches would not want to go there and possibly get burned with the AD in hot water and possible athletic department further disclosures and even penalties, plus the bad PR.

So they hired Anderson, a band aid. He is happy, they have a "story".

He is a good guy. They should have hired him long, long ago, before his resume was downgraded with all those years at CMS.

    This is good for SLU.

At the end of your stream of consciousness rambling I don't feel as though I learned anything new.

  11. The ole, "my son is a senior in high school so I'm not going to change jobs" excuse, eh? Let's be realistic here. Gregg Marshall wasn't leaving WSU for Mizzou for the reason in bold above. Marshall has more tourney wins in his final four run than Mizzou has had in over a decade. The only way I would have seen Marshall accepting the Mizzou job is if: 1) they offered him Coach K money 2) he thought Mizzou would be a nice stepping stone to a premiere coaching position.

I think it would have taken a little over 3 million to get him to leave WSU. I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave WSU in the next year or two even if it's not a blue blood opening so long as it's a good fit.

I was just quoting his agent by the way, not my intuition. His agent brought up the son in high school part.

  12. I was talking about the UM Fans... Fan speculation included Shaka, Mack, Cronin, Miller, Drew, Matta, Kruger. The job is not as attractive as many of them like to think. I don't think your AD has the best reputation either.

I guess you haven't been on the internet during a coaching search before? Every fan base shoots for the moon with speculation, including this board in the past.

  13. Brilliant! Mack not to blame for keeping starters in game up by 23, Kenny Frease was an innocent victim trying to avoid the confrontation, and this just keeps getting better... the "white guy" on the ground also now apparently the victim of a racilly motivated hate crime. the REST of the UC and X players are thugs, of course, Shaka is, but no other A-10 coaches. Reality! Don't let the word police get you down. Keep fighting the good fight!

    Yeah! "Stand Your Ground!"

  14. Mizzou had been angling to get into the Big 10 long before the announcement that they were looking to add teams. They spent years trying to set themselves for when the Big 10 would expand. Everyone knew once the Big 10 announced they were expanding that the SEC would expand, too. No one associated with Mizzou wanted the SEC. It was all about the Big 10.

It wasn't about wanting the SEC or not, really. It was that we didn't expect the SEC to target Mizzou. Everyone thought that Mizzou seemed like a better fit for the Big 10 from Fans to national media. As soon as the SEC started looking at Mizzou and info began leaking out everyone I know was incredibly excited about the idea.
