  1. I wonder if we could out bid Murray State and steal Steve Prohm from them. Tell him he can join a league with the nations other top young coaches (Smart, Stevens, Mooney, and Mack).

If not I wouldn't mind seeing what Jeff Capel could do. He is only 37, can recruit, and has already taken both VCU and OU to the NCAA tournament. I think OU fired him too quickly and he has spent the last two years as an assistant at Duke. I'm guessing he has continued to learn from his experiences as a head coach and from Coach K at Duke. You don't get your first head coaching job at 27 and later added to Coach K's staff if you don't have serious potential.

Only a matter of time till someone gives him another shot.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Capel

The other guy that I wouldn't mind seeing hired is Tim Fuller. I know several posters on this board hate Missouri but this guy can recruit and has been named one of the top assistants under 40. Check out his history and watch the video on this link. He will be a head coach somewhere soon. I know Mizzou fans would absolutely hate to see him leave (much less lose him to another in state school).

    Tim Fuller Profile

  2. Crews failed tonight. Crews failed against USC Upstate. Absolutely pathetic job of coaching, motivating, and adjusting.

If he is auditioning for the permanet head coaching job he is not off to the best start. I wasn't impressed with his resume when he took over but I figured he would be able to coast for at least a season on what Majerus had built. It's still early in the season though so who knows maybe tonight was a fluke and he will impress us all by the end of the season.

  3. Some financials released today, 40 mil total, 5 mill per year split among the teams, about 312k per season.

I'm glad we got a new deal with hopefully more games on TV but this seems kind of low. I know we don't have football but I was hoping we could get around a million per year per school. You would think a conference with Xavier, Butler, VCU, Dayton, UMass, Richmod, Rhode Island, Saitn Joseph's, and even us SLU could get more $$. These are names that college basketball fans across the country a familiar with.

    Did some reaserch and :

    - Big East basketball schools are currently getting 1.5 million per year and that will likely grow with their new contract.

    - Couldn't find dollar amounts for the MVC or WCC but we get more national games than either of them. I'm guessing the $$ don't look good in those contracts or they would be online somewhere.

  4. Here's an article from ESPN. This was written in May.

Top 10 Thursday: Assistants 40 and under

I'd be happy with almost any of those guys but I like these coaches the most from that list.

Tim Fuller (Missouri): When opposing coaches say you’re on the rise, that means something. Fuller has amassed a solid reputation in coaching circles. After just a season with the Tigers, Frank Haith promoted Fuller to associate head coach. Fuller, who played at Wake Forest from 1997-2000, is just 34. But his stock is rising fast.

    http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/fuller_tim00.html

Matthew Graves (Butler): Last year, Brad Stevens promoted Graves, who’s in his late 30s, to an associate head-coaching position, a credit to his role in the program’s success. You don’t reach back-to-back national title games as a mid-major program by accident. Stevens and his staff put the program on the national map. With a move to the Atlantic 10, the Bulldogs will attain even more national exposure. And Graves, who’s been vital to the program’s efforts in recent years, will end up on a multitude of lists once jobs open up again after next season.

    http://www.butlersports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/graves_matthew00.html

Jeff Boals (Ohio State): The former Ohio forward joined Matta’s staff in 2009. The Buckeyes have enjoyed success in all areas during his time with the program. He’s helped Matta develop top players such as Jared Sullinger and Evan Turner. And he’s an energetic and effective recruiter. Boals, 39, won’t be an assistant for long.

    http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/boals_jeff00.html

James Whitford (Arizona): Sean Miller’s longtime assistant was pursued by Miami (Ohio) in the offseason but decided to stay in Tucson, where he helped the Wildcats sign one of the top recruiting classes in the country. The Wildcats struggled during the 2011-12 campaign. But with Mark Lyons and some talented recruits headed to Arizona, the Wildcats could win the Pac-12 next season. It’s easy to see why Whitford, 40, stayed put.

I'd like to see us find a good young up and coming coach rather than some one who has been fired somewhere else.

The following were all talented young up and coming assistant coaches when they were hired:

Butler hired Brad Stevens when he was 30.

VCU hred Shaka Smart when he was 32.

Xavier hired Chris Mack when he was 39.

Richmond hired Chris Mooney when he was 32. (he did have one year of HC experience at AF)

St. Mary's hired Randy Bennett when he was 39.

Gonzaga hired Mark Few when he was 36.

  5. A couple of ideas.

Todd Lickliter - Former Iowa and Butler head coach, now a HC at Marain

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Lickliter

I'm sure there are many more options out there

  6. According to this article it will be a 16 game season with only one 2 time opponent.

    http://www.indystar....0605/120529032/

If they do that we could get Butler as our home and home since X and Dayton will likely be paired up. It would be great to build a rivalry with BU and Indianapolis to STL is a fairly easy trip.

    I'm guesssing something like this

    Butler and Saint Louis

    Dayton and Xavier

    Duquesne and St. Bonaventure

    UMass and Rhode Island

    Fordham and La Salle

    Saint Joseph's and Temple

    Richmond and VCU

    Charlotte and George Washington

  7. This is always an interesting board to read.

Looks like we are looking for a guarantee game Jan. 5th. So I guess we know one likely home game date.

"Saint Louis University is looking for a Guarantee game January 5."

Several A10 teams seem to be looking for games on there.

Here are a couple of other listings that looked interesting.

"Creighton is looking for a Top 75 RPI team to start a home and home in Omaha (Friday, November 9th)or play a single game at a neutral site on Friday or Saturday(November 9th or 10th."

"George Mason is looking to start a H&H series on the road on December 29th, 2012."

"Looking for a home and home starting at Saint Mary\'s. Call/Email to discuss. Likely TV!"

"The University of Utah is looking to start a H/H series at Utah. Our dates available are Nov 12-14 or Dec 17-19. We can pay 20-25k to start the series at Utah. Our RPI is 274 and we would like to start the series with a similar RPI team." Our rpi is a lot better than what they are looking for but the media would love the story of Majrus playing his old team.

"Southeast Missouri State is looking for 2 Home games with return games the following year. Prefer to stay regional. Lots of open dates."

"UMKC Looking to start a Home and Home series beginning in KC on Dec. 22, 2012 and returning the following year"

  8. And I did hear today that Clemson is listening to the B12. Why? No one knows or understands it, but they are. If this were to come about, you can bet the carcass of the Beast will once again get picked over by the ACC. Welcome CT and Rutgers.

I seriously doubt Clemson and FSU join the Big 12 trainwreck but if they did it would be interesting to see what some of the other fallouts might be. Would Virginia Tech and NC State look at the SEC? What about the Big Ten would Virginia, UNC, Duke, or Maryland consider leaving what's left of the ACC and join the BIG? The ACC already signed a contract that will pay them less then the SEC, BIG, Pac, and likely the B12 and I don't see replacing Clemson and FSU with two Big East teams being an equal trade. I doubt they leave but if they do it could set off a whole new round of dominos. Also if i were in charge at Clemson or FSU I would make sure all Big 12 teams (especially UT and OU) sign that 13 year grant of media rights before even considering joining. Right now the extension to 13 years is just a verbal agreement.

  9. I wish they would give the % full. IMO that would be a better measurement for teams that are failing or not.

Here are the arena capacites of the A10 according to Wikipedia

    13,435 - Dayton

    10,600 - Saint Louis

    10,250 - Xavier

    10,206 - Temple

    3,470 - Fordham

    The new additions

  11. Meh. It will be interesting to see if Shaka is actually the coach in 2013.

Pretty sure almost every BCS job that has opened up in the last two years has wanted to hire him and he is still at VCU. Illinois went afer him hard last year and I beleive he grew up in that state and he still turned them down. Smart is making good money with a long term contract at VCU and seems to be happy building his program there. I guess the real challenge will be when one of the basketball blue blood programs open up. A program like Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, or UCLA at this point are the only jobs I could see him potentially leaviing for.

  12. Great news. VCU along with Butler are two strong additions and programs that should both be good for the forseable future. Both Brad Stevens and Shaka Smart are great young coaches that look like they will be at those programs for a long time. They have both turned down multiple jobs from the "BCS" leagues and seem to be following the same path as Mark Few at Gonzaga.

I don't mind having two teams in Richmond since they are both good programs. Chris Mooney is doing a good job with the Spiders and is another quality A10 coach that turned down job offers from the "big" conferences.

I do hope that if we stay with 14 teams the A10 lets us play Butler home and away every year. They are now our closest conference opponent and playing twice per year would be a great way to build a rivalry. X and Dayton will always be each others main rival so I really hope we can build a good rivalry with BU.

  13. As for the A-10 the schools I can see us losing, in addition to Temple who's gone, are UMass and Charlotte. Both have FB aspirations. Good luck. But if the A-10 goes ahead and adds Butler, VCU, GM, and possibly Creighton, it looks to be a better and more stable conference in the long run than the Beast. Also, it will have a far better geographical situation than the Beast, which will be a logistical nightmare for the travel people in their respective AD's.

Anyone have any idea when we might hear some sort of announceent on Butler or Buterl/VCU/Mason to the A10? Therre were all those rumors for a while but things seem to have quieted down. I hope we actually do get all three but in my opinion we need to at least add Butelr to help replace what we lost with Temple.

  14. Make no mistake about it .. football is king in Texas. Basketball truly is something you do between football and spring football.

Outside of the Texas basketball job, I wouldn't take nary a position at any other Texas school.

Football is king but there is still plenty of basketball talent and schools with money in that state.

A few schools even have pretty good hoops histories. UTEP has 17 tournament appearances and a national championship. Houston's got 19 tournament appearances and was national runner up twice.

Texas A&M, Baylor, and even Texas Tech's hoops programs all improved quite bit since they joined the Big 12 compared to what they used to be in the SWC.

Texas A&M improved a lot under Gillispie and Turgeon. Drew has Baylor on a roll and now with Gillispie at Tech they might get back to being the solid program they were when Kniight was there. Of course Texas also has a good program wth 30 tournament apperances and a few final fours.

And now with TCU goiing to the Big 12, Houston to the Big East, and SMU to the Big East those schools are going to have a lot more money they can invest in their hoops programs. More money means better facilities, larger budgets for recruiting and travel, and potentially better coaching staffs.

With talent near by, money, and exposure from larger leagues I wouldn't be surprised to see college basketball become a bigger sport in Texas. It will never beat Football down there but I could see it growing in popularity.

  15. Is it just me or does anyone else find it "interesting" that MIZ has landed four transfers for next year. Seems a bit fishy to me.

I don't think it's that odd. Mike Anderson forgot to recruit any players for 2011 and 2012. He left some talented players but zero recruits. Before Bowers got hurt and missed last season Mizzou was only going to have two scholarship players returning for the 2012-13 season. Wiith Bowers coming back they were up to three. For transfering players looking for playing time that has to be appealing. The fact that two of the three returning players are talented point gurads probably also helped make Mizzou appealing for transfering players.

Considering Haith had 10 scholarships to fill I'd say he did pretty good. He got 4 freshman, 4 transfers, a juco player, and has one more open scholarship to fill. The transfers should help balance out the classes a little bit. It looks like two only have one year left, one has two years, and one has three.

  16. Majerus turns down SMU to remain at SLU.

Good news. Hopefully we don't have to worry about replacing him again for at least another 5 or 6 years. I also hope Chris Harriman stays with us and learns enough in that time from Majerus to take over when he retires.

  17. I knew Kim Anderson had been doing a good job at UCM but after looking closer he has done even better than I thought. The man can obviously coach. In ten seasosns at Central Missouri he is 222-81 (.732). If we actually lose Majerus, Anderson will probably be one of my top choices as a replacement.
