  1. With the hiring of RM and the funding of the new arean, Fr. B and others wanted SLU to be the next GZ and X. If them, why not us? Our resources are greater and they've seen the light, at last, that a good hoops program has a trickle down effect to other aspects of the university, ie more apps, higher entrance requirements, greater alum donations. Now how do you become a GZ or an X is the trick. Look at the extremes The Mizzery route under Q. Break just about every rule in the book to land top rated recruits and then get nailed. Hire a saint, insert the name Soderberg, and spin your wheels. Just as an aside, anyone who thought UB's 20 win season was the beginning of a turnaround is seriously delusional. So, we hire an RM, who so far has not proven himself to be a Q or a Kel the Cell type. He's different though. A character who can be abrasive on one hand and a warm fuzzy puppy on the other. Did we really expect he would go out and bring in a bunch of JUCO's or 4- 5 star types in devious fashion. I'd bet that ground was covered in his interview, eg. Fr. B- "We want to win, but we're not going to jail to do it." I doubt RM's going to get us locked up. He's also realistic enough to know there wasn't a quick fix for SLU. He's also realistic enough to know had he kept UB's recruits around the process would have taken much longer. I've no problem with that, but some do. Yeah, he's a polarizing guy... so's Bobby Knight... so's John Calipari.... and on and on and on. Was he the best hire for SLU? Who can tell at this point? We can only hope he develops his players and eventually take us to the promised land, fulfills his contract, and leaves us with a guy who will continue his expected good deeds. Remember, as Broy used to say back in the Sodie years, hey it took Coach K three years at Duke to turn it around. He doesn't use this argument to defend RM, and much to my dismay basically backed up Mr. Scott's assessment 100%, because he just doesn't like the man. You don't have to like him, but as a Bills fan he does deserve the same consideration you gave UB.

    AS far as bringing in players in devious fashion, you might want to do so some research on his time at Ball State.
  2. The fact that you have conceded even just a little bit is marginally better. If you know anyone in Springfield, MO you can ask them how they consider

    their weather to be different than the weather in KC. You do realize that I-70, is joined by I-44 just south of the arch about one and one half miles

    separated only by I-55?

    But if your frame of reference is that Coumbia is the center of the earth perhaps we should discuss Galileo's challenging of Copernicanism despite the fact that from the time of Aristotle people accepted that the sun revolved around the earth.

    Careful. The Jesuits were mighty pissed at Galileo for this theory. There may still be some at SLU in denial. :)
  3. I'm starting to think legacy doesn't matter as much as just having a plain good coach.

    More money, better coach.

    Better coach, better players.

    Better players, more wins.

    Once Majerus is gone we can just hire another name, we are paying big coaching bucks now.

    Does anyone know how much Majerus actually makes per year? It it $1MM per year guaranteed or is it some lesser number plus incentives that he may not, as yet, be collecting? After seeing the coaching salaries structures, there can be a big difference.
  4. re: baseball if I had a choice between public schools in Missouri probably I would be tempted to go MO State over MO-Columbia so the triple A scouts could get a look if I was a strike out king and the weather is marginally better in Springfield. Except for the vet program I think they are about the same level of students on SAT or ACT scores and we all know that is the real

    way to judge undergrad programs-who you compete with as the more endowed schools like Wash U the tenured professors rarely teach undergrads and it would be unique to find a tenured professor teaching freshman or sophs

    So did they have a special section at Busch for the Mizzou fans that spend lots of time on the Billiken board?

    Punctuation can be your friend.

  5. It was definitely awesome to see a college game being played at Busch. As a former Billiken ball player who got to play at such luxurious venues as Forest Park (long before groundskeepers even knew there were baseball diamonds there) and ABC Park in St. Ann, it is great to see the upgrade in the program. Coach Hendrickson has done a marvelous job in such a short time getting some higher quality players and some notoriety - recall they played the Cardinals in Spring Training last year.

    Even though last night's game was not indicative of the team's improvement, losing to Mizzou is not a given. I hope the annual series between the two schools continues.

    I think the last few years the game has been a "wood bat" game, but last night everyone was using aluminum. Mizzou was home team because they spent the money to utilize Busch.

    It surprises me that Mizzou paid for the use unless your coach got them a deal. They're investing a lot in the baseball program already. They're continuing to update their baseball park (Taylor Stadium). This year they're adding new locker rooms, coaches offices,indoor and outdoor batting cages, more seating and a new scoreboard and video board. Their long-range plan for a "sports park" seems to be coming true.
  6. And if Cal leaves Memphis and then Memphis goes after Anderson — which they should after watching Anderson's Tigers knock off Memphis last week — you'll have a bidding war between Memphis and Georgia that Missouri can't compete with.

    This has reached the point where Anderson is being offered more than Calhoun or Izzo if the numbers are correct. At what point do you have to say "Good Luck"? Missouri is already paying the football coach $2.3MM.
  7. If you really want to see it, just go over to CatsPause and do a search for "Majerus" - his name pops up a few times. I don't feel like doing it myself.

    Edit: I apologize, this post sounded jerky. Basically, there's just a thread over there where people are throwing out the names of coaches they'd like and a few said Majerus. A few others said they would not want Majerus. Majerus's name hasn't been mentioned in any rumors or anything.

    No need to apologize. I just thought you might have an easy link. Thanks.
  8. Don`t know if anyone stayed up to watch the St.Mary`s game vs. Davidson,it came on around 11:45 Eastern time, taped it.

    What a game, Patty Mills vs. Curry,both played well.St. Mary`s won and will now go to San Diego State in the quarterfinals.Kentucky advanced also with a win @ Creighton.

    This is a pretty strong NIT field.Seems it gets tougher and tougher.

    Mills had a great assist/turnover ratio at 10:1. However, his 3 point shooting was the reverse, 1 for 10. Ouch. Curry shot about the same with no free throws taken. Curry had 5 assists and 6 tournovers. Ouch again. How tall is Mills? He doesn't look big enough. We''ll see.
  9. Well, I'd at least like to know if SLU would accept playing its home game at Scottrade Center, not that I favor that by any means, but would SLU accept that if SLU controlled the tickets?

    Even then it seems that this game will not be played, at least until SLU is an NCAA team again and a true threat to Mizzou.

    Playing 2 in Columbia for 1 at SLU is unacceptable to SLU IMO. SLU should only consider something like that if it involves the high elite, well beyond Mizzou even now, and even then I would think long and hard about going for something like that.

    Also, note how coy Mike Anderson was in today's press conference. He is reportedly on Alabama's list. His tenure in Columbia may be very short lived.

    Good to see you keeping close tabs on Mizzou. Possible convert? :) Mike Anderson could most certainly leave and if Missouri couldn't find a coach with a similar style, it would be a major setback - especially with a couple of very good recruits coming in next year which won't be so hot anyway. However, he has gotten Missouri back in the limelight in a good way so attracting a good coach won't be as difficult. If Alabama offers the reported $2 Million, he's most likely gone since Mizzou's best number is supposedly $1.5 MM. But no need to worry about that now. I'm sure a new contract proposal is underway whether it's good enough or not. Besides we're 30-6 in the Sweet 16 with another tough game Thursday. Football won 10 games, Wrestling just finished 7th in the country. Baseball just took 2 out of 3 from 3rd ranked Texas A&M. Womens Softball and Gymnastics are both ranked in the top 25. It's a great time to be a Tiger!!
  10. Here's your multiple choice question:

    For Mizzou to resume its series with SLU, which of the following would be most appealing to Mizzou?

    a. Home and home, first game in Columbia, second game at SLU's Chaifetz Arena (the reason for the first game in Columbia is the last meeting was a SLU home game at the now Scottrade Center);

    b. Three game series, each team gets a home game, one in Columbia, one at Chaifetz Arena, the third game will be played at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis;

    c. Three game series, each team gets a home game, one in Columbia, one at Chaifetz Arena, the third game will be played at Scottrade Center in St. Louis;

    d. Home and home, first game in Columbia, second game at Scottrade Center, with the game being a SLU home game, with SLU in charge of the game, including ticket distribution;

    e. None of the above (with Duck Season continuing in Boone County, Missouri).

    By its actions, Mizzou is voting e.

    See, you're trying to make the rules and you don't hold the bargaining power. It's really not hard to understand. You need the game to try and piggy back on Mizzou. Mizzou doesn't need you. My post a while back that the board ignored and quickly pushed off the page referenced Forbes Magazines's article showing Missouri as the 12th most profitable NCAA basketball program in the country. The greater part of the state of Missouri doesn't really care what SLU's up to. Mizzou has fans from SL to Joplin to KC to the Iowa border. I know it frustrates you but SLU is not the center of the state's basketball universe. You're a mid-major program trying to move up and Mizzou is under no obligation to help you.

    And in advance, playing 2 in Columbia and 1 in St. Louis is not an option.

  11. As usual, you aren't listening. I want more BCS vs. non-BCS match-ups in the tourney. Its the 8-9 BCS only match-ups that the casual fan finds boring, and CBS should know it, even if Differ Phelps doesn't.

    Davidson was the story of the tournament last year and I guarantee the Kansas/Davison match-up got higher ratings then the Kansas/Wisconsin match-up that could have been would have.

    Actually, you're correct for a change. I'm not listening - I'm reading. And, as usual, you're replacing fact with your opinion. The story of the tournament was Memphis giving the championship away to Kansas and, yes I know, Memphis is not a BCS school. They spend, recruit and play like a BCS school and guess what, they're in the tournament evey year on merit. You need to get out of your parochial bent where you think NCAA basketball revolves around your wishes. It's big business.
  12. Not true at all. Its well known that a BCS only tourney would make more money than a non-BCS only tourney. What most of us are saying is that a tournament of BCS AND non BCS teams makes the MOST money. The casual fan does not watch the first couple days so they can see an 8-9 game of Tenn vs. OK State. They watch so they can see VCU upset UCLA or Cleveland St. beat Wake Forest. The NCAA is making it harder and harder for the mid-major schools to get into the dance and slowly but surely it is hurting the quality and popularity of the tournament, especially the first few days of it.

    If you don't believe me, go to a bar tell me who people are calling for in the Ohio-St. / Sienna game. Unless you show up at an OSU alumni bar I guarantee you the average fan is rooting for Sienna. Its what makes the tourney great those first few days.

    Well, as usual, you're seeing the everything through your mid-major eyes. Actually,the first few rounds could be totally eliminated and the tournament would still be great. Fill up the first few days with Valparaiso-SLU or Saint Marys-North Dakota State and all those fans you're talking about will be watching the World Series of Poker re-runs. You had better have plenty of BCS qualifiers or the tournament won't be worth watching and the advertisers and CBS know that.
  13. I think they earned their seed. They have played well. I just dont think they have the type of team to go to an elite eight. Thats just my honest opinion. However, there are no teams in their part of the bracket who I think are better than them

    Marquette is very good - even with Dominic James out. most recent losses to Uconn, Pitt, Louisville, Villanova. if Missouri doesn't shoot threes better than they have been, they'll be home early.
  14. Just spent an hour watching Hubert Davis (UNC), Digger Phelps (ND) and Jay Bilas (Duke) provide their "unbiased" opinions that Arizona and Penn St. should be in the dance and Creighton and St. Marys should be out. The logic ranged from Digger's "just look at who's on the rosters" to Hubert and Jay's "who did they beat" which clearly favors teams from big conferences that get multiple bites at the apple vs. top teams.

    It will be interesting this afternoon to see who is right. Jerry Palm of Collegerpi was on one of the St. Louis talk shows last week and his assessment was that there's going to be a greater than normal BCS teams in the 65 this year.
  15. moytoy is usually the most trenchant observer of SLU hoops, but I never understand what that means, even when Ramsey says the same thing. Besides arcane discussions of the failure of The Devil Linda Blair, or whatever the previous conference commissioner's name was, to get a great basketball contract on TV, what are you referring to?

    Here is, in a nutshell, the theoretical advantage of the A10, by my logic: The Eastern US is the nexus of University prestige in the USA and the world. The Eastern US is the media center of the US and world. Therefore membership within and among that group has potential advantages that could never, ever be replicated elsewhere (on a similar playing field i.e not the Big 10 or Big 12). SLU entered, and will remain, on that basis.

    The key word above is "potential" and, as long as the Big East and ACC exist, there will be only paltry leftovers remaining for others less fortunate.
  16. Clock_Tower

    Instead, I'm frustrated with his scoring output these last 2 years, I have defended him at length these last 2 years,

    No disrespect Clock but you're a like a traffic investigator who happens upon crash after crash involving the same driver and yet you never connect the operator to the disasters. When you do connect the two you find someway to mitigate or absolve him from the crash.

    I had thought he had accepted RM and his peculiar and, at times, overbearing personality and was giving maximum effort. When TL/family decided to make their protest statement by not shaking RM's hand.

    I didn't make the game so I don't know if this was something that was planned or not. What I do know is that the benefits of having a closed practice is that you get to say and do pretty much what you want to say and do without being held accountable. Things such as offering to assist a senior player to transfer well into the season or vile comments about your lineage. Majerus has a well documented history so this should come as no surprise to anyone. Conversely what happened that night should come as no surprise.

    I always thought that, when Mike Anderson came to MU, Tommie would heve thrived there. On a related note, in Gordon's column about conference tournaments and Majerus, he nailed Majerus on the academics issue. Why do you run kids off enmasse making them start over and miss out on that vaunted SLU education if it's academics first?
  17. The Suggs rumors have been making the rounds. I have no idea if he really is going to transfer or not, but I have heard about him mentioned being interested in Mizzou. I have not heard anything about SLU. Who knows it is probably all BS. Majerus Magic probably would have the best sources on Suggs and he says he has not heard anything.

    Suggs will not be coming to Missouri.
  18. St. Mary's (RPI 45) deserves an NCAA at large ahead of both Creighton and Illinois State once the Patty Mills injury is considered. The entire Missouri Valley Conference has no player better than Patty Mills. SMC was 18-1 when Mills was injured and nationally ranked. Now Mills is back.

    And this business about the MVC deserving 2 bids more than the A-10 does is just pure rubbish. Xavier (RPI 15) and Dayton (RPI 22) have much better RPI's than any Valley team. For that matter, Temple (RPI 40) has as much right to an NCAA at large bid than do Creighton (RPI 39) or Illinois State (RPI 47).

    Ahead of Illinois State, definitely. Creighton not so much, although they may not get in. With St. Marys though, you're talking pure homerism. Their SOS is 160. That's terrible. The A-10 does deserve two, although Dayton's SOS isn't great. The way Xavier is playing, they may not get the automatic and make sure there's two or maybe three like it happened last year.
