  1. Honesty issues for a future theologian? Just seems like NCAA problems (SK and CE) coming to SLU. WR can go to KSU, no problem, with a few days!

I know, right? No way we'd be able to pull that off. For whatever reason, the NCAA seems to screw us whenever possible.
  2. You have seen this in practice right? I don't recall him showing much ability to shoot the basketball from any distance, but my only basis for this is home games at Chaifetz.

I think you are misremembering. Conk definitely did this on many occasions and nailed the shot. He's not a "shooter", but the stigma that he cannot shoot within 15ft is wrong.
  3. I hope so. Otherwise he won't be of much help. If he develops an accurate jump shot from fifteen feet on in he could be a big contributer this year.

Ya know, I see a lot of people on here dog Conklin's jumper, but I don't see it. For as much as he takes it, he sure seems to be fairly accurate from the free throw line and base line. It's a bit ugly and looks like a half ass fade away most of the time, but it seems to me anyway, that he hits the shot at a consistent clip. I really hope his vertical has improved like you guys are saying...that would make a significant difference. Still a bit leary though at only 6'6". I keep telling myself he is really 6'8" if measured elsewhere.

Edit - not referring to actual free throws when I say free throw line. Just the jumpers from the general area.

  4. interesting that you use that comparison since the only year soderberg had a less than 500 record was the year his two best players got hurt and then proceeded to lose more close games than seemed possible.

even though some can say we just lost our two best players, imo we have far more depth that will allow us to be significantly over 500 for the season. if our freshmen, who many have claimed consist of the best rickma recruiting class yet, step up and perform at a high level, i personally believe a 20 win season can still happen. a lot depends on loe, jett, evans and mccall, being all they are advertised to be. let's see how it turns out.

The biggest problem with Soderbergs teams were 1) We severely lacked athleticism and 2) we severely lacked size. I feel like our athleticism is still above anything we had with Soderberg, but with Willie gone, we are missing the athletic/size combination we need. Even if Cory improves like everybody said, we are severely lacking at the 5 position. Who plays the 5 when he is out? Although Rob is 6'11, I have read nothing...anywhere...that tells me he can play the 5. He excels facing up to the basket and he is too young/thin to guard a 5. That leave's us with Conklin at the 5...who can bang with the best of them...but can barely get above the rim. Teams like Duke or Xavier will have an absolute field day with us on the blocks.

I disagree with the person that states this is a Soderberg team, but I really feel we are missing a vital piece to be "significantly over 500".

  5. I'm working on a time machine.

My first order of business is to go back to May 2010 to stop this from happening.

Then I will go back and kill Hitler. First things first.

Then you need to go to the future, pick up a sports almanac, come back to the present, win a bunch of money, build a casino and rule Hill Valley. Er, maybe that's been done already.

Good post, 'kan. We need your eternal optimism during times like this. I hope we can recover quickly from this disaster.

  6. If these two players are out for 10 or more games we will overachieve to play 600 ball.

I think we can still make the tourney, but where I would be disappointed is the missing of the Duke game. We finally get a national TV game with maybe the biggest name in college hoops and we'll probably come out with the B squad. No way we put up a fight for that one without the big guy.
  7. and why didnt the players have a "personal advisor" attend with them? shame on the athletic dept/basketball coaches for not being there or at least making sure a mentor/parental type wasnt there. the alegations are of a serious nature enough that the players side should have been more prepared. to assume nothing was going to happen or could happen was naive. not saying our players should have had that foresight they are barely legal age. but i would hope the coaches and athletic dept could see at least the faintest chance of where this could lead. to leave that open to the players own defenses and means was not smart.

....unless nothing really happened. The more this drags on, the more i'm convinced that nothing "bad" happened. The police didn't find anything and obviously whatever was done was insignificant enough that it could wait half a year to play out. At this point, i'd bet the farm that it's a regretted sexual encounter that daddy is appalled by. If what we hear is accurate...that daddy has a lot of money...and Biondi's known agenda as a business man...then this is all starting to fit together. I agree that it was probably bad judgement not to send an advocate for the players, but perhaps it was such a stupid incident that the coaches didn't feel it was necessary at the time. Poor decisions by two consenting adults should not result in what we are seeing right now. I have a record on here as being quick to criticize those who play the "race card", but I'm starting to think that is becoming the case here.
  8. Story that I've been told is that the 2 players were told to show up at the hearing, but it was no big deal, merely a formality. They attended without legal support. The girl's parents and lawyer attended and the guys were hammered. The extended appeal time was designed to hopefully have a cooling off period and allow the players to have their own lawyers advocate for their positions.

Don't kill the messenger, don't know if it is true, but it comes from someone who could know. If true, it makes some sense to what so far is a fairly senseless time delay. Heck, practice is only 8 days away and the boys (all 13 of them) deserve to know what is going on with their futures.

If true, that is absurd and I hope the school takes action on behalf of the players. That was not a legal proceeding and it's unacceptable for a lawyer to show up and blind side our guys. What right does a lawyer have in a student court? The fact that the "court" even let that happen shows just how effed up this whole process is.
  9. There is an interesting "discussion" going on under the "Kowal investigation" thread so it is basically buried in the wrong place, so I thought I'd give it a cahnce to breath on its own.

I'll use Scott Suggs as an example and as a point of reference only, not intended to hold a grudge against him.

At this point in the RM regime if SS wanted to come back to SLU, "Would ya" give up a scholarship to get him? What are the pros and cons of doing so? Note I said, "At this point." Clearly, we would have welcomed any above average D1 player in yrs past-you can probably list 10 or more who we have welcomed back over the past 30 yrs or so.

To be perfectly clear, I do not hold a grudge once a player leaves-I loved Jim Roder and others like him "coming home." However, I believe we are now at the point where we should not be the fallback (I can always come home if things don't work out at XYZ U.) I think we shoot ourselves in the foot by allowing players we recruited to come back to us later. By allowing these returns to SLU we are basically saying, "Go ahead and try the other school."

Therefore to answer my own question, no return allowed for SS or any other players in his category, e.g. JH or BB. Sure it would be nice to add a player of SS or BB's ability to our roster as a transfer, but I think we are better served by having the deterent policy of not being the fallback. I like, "We want you now, not later."

When a local recruit decides to go elsewhere, I stop caring about him. At that point, I could care less what the kid does the rest of his basketball career. And admittedly, if some crap goes down at his new school and screws him over, I may even take a tiny bit of joy in it. That being said, we should never turn away a recruit that has a chance to be an impact player on our team. If the kid sucks, then don't pay him any attention. However, if Rick and co. think a kid like Suggs could come home and upgrade the team, it would be stupid to keep the kid away simply because of a grudge. It's a case by case basis.

I too thought there may be a good pic to ponder when I opened the thread...

  10. My money is on SK coming to the Bills. I haven't heard about him signing with anybody else...or even chatter from other schools boards, so i'd say there is a good chance he comes to the Bills. I think there may be some finagling going on behind the scenes with the scholarships...

  11. Gotta say that the "It's a monster schedule; it's a great schedule for our fans." comment irked me. I know we have issues scheduling, but a Monster Schedule??? c'mon...I don't think anybody here could agree with that. Reminds me a lot of when Soderberg gave himself an "A" after not making the postseason. All in all, I'm not as upset as some regarding the schedule, but we have a LONG way to go before it is a good or even great schedule for our fans.

  12. The last three years people have complained that Majerus doesn't have a midnight madness. I don't think he is going to change his ways. It feels to me like yet another attack by many on RM.

The last coach that did do midnight madness or a billiken club even was BS. Hence the reference to him.

I apologize if you feel like I was personally attacking you by calling you part of the billikens.com faithful that wants a midnight madness.

I don't take it as an attack on the coach, but many feel it's a stupid decision. I wouldn't trade RM for many people these days, but still think it's a dumb decision not to do something. And, perhaps a MM wasn't held because we had nothing to show. At this point...with all the excitement going into the season...perhaps he would be willing to change his mind. Probably not, but it's certainly an acceptable conversation in August.

And I don't feel like i'm being personally attacked. No need for an apology. Just feel like a lot of your responses are quite condescending (toward most people...not me...i barely post these days). Doesn't matter, I guess. I'll live.

  13. Must be August/September if the Billikens.com faithful are complaining about the lack of a midnight madness / open practice. Happens every year and it simply isn't going to change while RM is the coach.

We could always go back to the good ole days of an open practice for Billiken Club members hosted by BS at West Pine Gym where we get our first glance at players like Obi Ikeafor or midnight madnesses where we watch the Darren Clarkes of the world shoot lights out...those were the days.

???? So, having an event like this means we are going back to the Soderberg days? Where did this condescending attitude toward everybody come from? It's pretty pathetic.
  14. You know what creates donors? Winning games. Making a mockery out of possibly useful practice doesn't help with that, IMO. I like RickMa's philosophy on this issue.

See Roy's response. We're talking about an hour here. An hour. The positive effect would outweigh the hour of "missed" practice. And why does it have to be a mockery? A hard fought scrimmage is not a mockery. How many college football fans do you know who just can't wait for that first intra-squad scrimmage? It's the way things are done at a high level. And a midnight madness would probably be enjoyed by the players and the students...isn't that what this is all about? Sure, winning games makes money...but so do many other things. I just don't get why people wouldn't want this or think it wouldn't be beneficial to the program.
  15. I agree with the original poster. What big time program does not have some sort of event for it's donors prior to the season? I can't think of one (but i certainly am not familiar with all programs). A blue/white game, a midnight madness, a special practice...something. Big time programs do this. It creates buzz, it makes the donors special, it potentially increases donations and it's good marketing.

  16. Rumor has it (@billsinsider latest series of tweets), that the Bills will be beginning a home and home against the Wildcats of Villanova. Is Majerus finally getting more of the high-profile Catholic school match ups that he has been craving or is this an over active "insiders" wild ride? Lemme know if anyone has heard anything.

Lets Go Bills! Either way, I am excited for this season. I'll be in Vegas soon and I'm betting on the Bills being at least a seven seed in the big dance.

Well, who is BillsInsider? I'm not on Twitter, so that would probably help answer the question. There was serious talk about doing that last year, but it fell through. I'm doubting it happens this year so late in the game, but that would be AWESOME.
  17. SS.

So nothing from Nate's site can be discussed on this Board?? Not looking for anyone to copy/paste or summarize in detail the work Nate provides. I get that and agree with you.

Instead, I am suggesting that if Nate's board says SLU has offered player XYZ, then does that mean that this Board cannot discuss player XYZ?? Ever?? What if the same info is available elsewhere or is published elsewhere?? What if a reasonable period of time passes by??

Nate posts quite a bit of recruiting information here. If we have offers out, it is generally posted here within a week one way or another. Agree with Shoe...I'm not paying 9.95/month so that I can copy and paste info here for the cheapos.
