  1. >>Also, most reporters want to concentrate on the pro sports because those sports will give them more credibility nationally and could provide them with the ability to "move up" the ladder in the profession.<<

I would much rather cover a Bills bball game than Blues hockey.

    That's the God's honest truth.

I'll continue to do so as long as the SLU Sports Dept.

will allow it. They have been very cooperative.

  2. For those living near Lebanon, Il or St. Clair Co.

The Bearcats will tip off the "official-unofficial" start of

their 2003-04 campaign tonight. The varsity vs. JV intra-squad contest. Known as the "Purple vs. White" game.

If you have nothing to do this evening, come on by. Starting time is 7 p.m. and the price is FREE.

If you aren't sure how to get there, call (618)537-6879.

Or you can map it on YAHOO.

    The address is:

    701 College Road

    Lebanon, Il.

    62254

    See ya there...........

  3. I don't know how Tuna can even be "classified" as a reporter.

He seldom attends a game. I saw in the Cards pressbox this year once. And it was only for maybe an inning or two. He was at one Bills home game last year, the Louisville contest. Never saw him in the Blues press area. I've never seen him take any written notes, carry a tape recorder or get any comments in the locker room. Or conduct any sort of post-game interviews. Basically, all he does is exercise his right to go to games for FREE. And doesn't do much of that. Oh, but he does like John Shaw. He goes to a few Rams games and drives down to Columbia for some Tiger football games, I hear. Which I find ironic since he rarely has anything nice to say about MU. But that's about it.

  4. I wonder if Charlie Tuna realizes just how foolish he looks

tonight by saying Brad is quote "not a good recruiter" on Sports-Plus

earlier this year. If you recall, Cooz even tried to check him by saying something like "He's only had three months." But Tuna just

    pfffffffffffftt it off.

It's one thing to have an opinion. But at least have some base knowledge of the facts before you open your trap and show how UNinformed you are in front of everyone. 'Nuff said!

  5. Roy,

I was up at McK watching practice today

    and spoke with coach.

    Here's the PRE-season schedule:

    Intra-squad / Varsity vs. JV./ Tuesday Oct. 14

Bearcats vs. Mineral Area College / Wednesday Oct. 22

Bearcats vs. Lewis and Clark C.C. / Wednesday Oct. 29

All three scrimmage games will be at the Mel Price

Convocation Center in Lebanon, Il. beginning at 7 p.m.

    NO CHARGE for admission.

The annual Tip Off Dinner (think it's the ninth or

10th year for this event) will be Sunday, Oct. 26th. @

    6:30 p.m.

Ticket information can be obtained by calling (618)537-6870.

(NOTE: Statham told me he wasn't certain about the date right now

so it would be best to call later in the month for confirmation.)

I've been to a few of these dinners and it's a good time.

FYI - The JV opener is Oct. 25. Check the McK schedule page link in the first thread for details.

  6. "Because of that association and McBride's concern over NCAA regulations regarding sports agents, McBride informed SNI President Greg Marecek on Wednesday that Claiborne no longer will be associated with the Billikens' broadcasts."

Interesting to see Greg Marecek's involvement even before

he went on to completely destroy the very foundation of KFNS radio. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Thanks for the article Joe. Very sound information that I did not know.

  7. Demetrious Johnson was talking about a P-D writer by the name of Jeremy Koller(sp?)tonight on his radio show. It seems Jeremy sent a letter to a Dr. Jones at Vashon High School with a request to investigate their telephone records. The letter was read on the air. DJ had Floyd Irons on the show and asked the coach if he knew what this was all about. Irons said he did not. DJ called Koller(sp?) a coward and gave out his phone number on the air. The funny thing is: I did a search of Koller using a few different spellings, went under a couple of different search engines but couldn't find a Jeremy Koller listed as a P-D writer. Although DJ said Koller wrote what he described as negative stuff about Mizzou and Clemons in the past. Johnson said he will be writing an editorial about it in the St. Louis American later this week..

  8. >

    >I loved seeing McKernan getting B****slapped on the air by

    >his boss Savard on channel 4 a couple weeks ago. Did anyone

    >else see that? It was priceless.

Actually that was a pretty bush league move on the part of

Savard. I haven't spoken with anyone who feels otherwise. Up to now, that is............

  9. Tim McKernan is good people. If you send him an email,

he will reply. I asked him to call me one time for what I thought

was an urgent matter and he got back to me within two hours. Not all of the St. Louis media will give you that kind of courtesy 100% of the time. Much of the time it's a case of, "I'll get back to you if and when I can." Don't hate a guy just because he's a Mizzou fan. Heck, I like the Tigers too. I just don't bring it on here.

  10. Heard ya on KFNS this morning. Presented yourself well bro. You sound much better than about 90% of these clowns who call every-friggin'-day and think Fans590 is going to hire them or something.

Drop me a line and we'll talk about that upcoming McKendree game.

    [email protected]

BTW, I'm told *NAIABASKETBALL.NET* should have a board coming up soon. I'm already on their football board NAIAFOOTBALL.NET

Check it out. It's very nicely organized.

  11. Roy, McK has released their latest bball schedule.

    http://www.mckendree.edu/sports/2003-04/M_...mbbschedule.htm

The season home opener is Nov. 4

Perhaps you can make it out to the

Statham Center and watch the 'Cats

    throw down some ball.

They have a few scrimmages coming up in October.

When I get those dates, I'll let you know.

Last year they took on Mineral Area College in a very

hard fought game. The final was something like 88-84.

They played that one like it mattered! Harry even said

after the game he played that one to win.

  12. I was watching a bit of the SEMO/SIU-C game tonight on FoxSportsNet

and was thinking - how cool it would be if SLU played in that conference.

The fans at the schools enjoy it. What's not to like about it?

It wouldn't downstage the importance of Bills basketball in any way.

    http://gateway.sportsinfosystems.com/

OR, if you like. Check out SEMO's schedule.

    http://gosoutheast.ocsn.com/sports/m-footb...otbl-sched.html

I prefer the Gateway myself for local purposes.

    And on the forward pass:

    http://home.no.net/birgerro/fwpassh.htm

"Amos Alonzo Stagg of Chicago and Eddie Cochems of St. Louis University apparently had come up with a more mobile maneuver in 1907 or 1908, with the ball tossed to a man running out. In fact, to St. Louis goes the first distinction of producing the first effective passing combination. Brad Robinson, the St. Louis quarterback, found the handle in learning to thow an overhand spiral, even with the fat ball of the period, and end Jack Schneider cleverly snagged it into his chest or stomach."

  13. It's not posted on their website yet. But I asked the sports dept. for a copy.

    >Is Mike Strobbe, a freshman forward out of McCluer, going to

    >start this season?

    >

    >- Nate

I should know more in a couple of weeks. But as Roy said, not too many Frosh start on the big club. Even Matt Laur

was redshirted his first year. And he went on to become the Bearcats' all time leading career scorer.

  15. Thanks torchy,

now that you mention it, I think you are right

about the Belleville West thing. I remember Bernie

Miklasz & Maurice Scott both saying something about that.

I just figured at the time they made a mistake OR that was just

where X lives and was attending O'Fallon. That's too bad.

I'll miss seeing him play this year since I live within

    walking distance of O'Fallon H.S.
