  1. Bartley or Reynolds may start out the gate or by conference play

    Yacoubou

Agbeko (if he is back to 100%)

    Lancona

    Manning

Have seen in McBroom in practice, pickup and games; have never seen him as a PG, and don't believe he is one. If he is starter it may mean we are struggling at that position.

Bench: Crawford, McBroom, Jolly, Yarbrough or Toby, Glaze.

  2. I haven't been keeping official tabs, but my recollection is that all of our recruits (except maybe Gillman) had solid BCS offers. It is perhaps the most telling "unofficial" stat about the rise of the program. Here is what I found:

    Jolly - Colorado and TCU

    Reynolds - LSU

Davell Roby - LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, MU, Arkansas, Wake Forest

    Marcus Bartley - Northwestern

Milik - Auburn, Minnesota, and Iowa

Gillman committed very early and was expected to be a longer term project, so it isn't fair to benchmark his offers at the time.

Believe Bartley had an Oklahoma State offer

  3. I don't see transfers being a problem this year. The guys that are here all see a good chance to log minutes. Plus the two seniors and two transfers aren't about to pull the plug at this stage and sit around for another year. The FR aren't even enrolled yet and don't see them suddenly reneging on an LOI. Next year that could be a different matter as we'll have 6 guards on the roster and one of the FR might not be faring as well as the other two, so that might make him a transfer casualty. I don't expect Jolly or Gillmann to leave as they are the only bigs.

Odd things ocurr in the summers when players all show up and begin scrimmaging against each other. Certain guys see the daily competition and start thinking its not the right place to get playing time. Most transfers ocurr right after the season, and then a few more happen in late June to middle of July.

  4. Is this based on anything you have heard or purely speculation?

From purely a basketball standpoint I think he is making a mistake waiting until May to start taking visits and to make a decision. I don't think he is the type of talent many programs will be waiting around for and some of the places he is interested in may no longer have openings for htim. I wonder if Brad Soderberg has reached out to him yet jk.

Speculation, nothing specific. My point is I don't believe he is a priority for SLU with the last scholly for next season. But Berry may feel this is a great fit for himself in 2015-2016. If so, walk-on.

  5. Agree that I don't feel Berry is the priority due to similarity to others on the roster and coming in, as well as having to wait a year for him. What we need more of are guys that can get shots for themselves and others. Yarbrough fits this need. Not the greatest athlete but can play at multiple speeds with a bit of size. Won't be shocked to see Berry pay his own way to SLU. Transfer list is very lengthy right now and a huge list of better prospects on that list. Interesting story might be who decides to leave? A lot of players vying for same positions that may have to sit behind someone in the same class or a year ahead or being an upperclassmen sitting behind an underclassmen.

  6. Don't worry FAKEINDIANS, we will see you in that rust bucket. Instead of solving your PG problems, you are stalking our board. You guys are a known entity and we are not. So when we get that W it will taste even better. Say hello to the cows for me.

  7. UMass is a safe 4th pick with Jabarie Hinds taking Chazz's spot. Hinds is an uptempo guard who should fit into Kellogg's system. My $$ is on same inconsistent UMass squad we have become accustomed to seeing. Have never been overly impressed with Hinds, so unless he is ready to share the ball I see him being a downgrade.

  8. @kshoe --- as my lawyer tells me, the answer is always "it depends" ..... if my bottom line is program recognition then yes, going to the NCAA four straight years is absolutely the way I'd like to go. If, however,my bottom line is to get these newbies the game experience and on the job training, then it might be extending the season and just playing more games. If my bottom line is to pad the coffers with more NCAA dollars and credits, we are back to the NCAAs. As I said, I will take any psot-season appearance next year as gravy.

@13 .... you can believe what you want and I do not disagree with some of the stuff you are saying. Lancona gave the "impression" he could shoot the three and I agree that that seems to be his calling, but the sample size is too small todetermine if it was/will be a continued success. I think it will.

Same with Agbeko. You can claim what you want but I saw the guy on Uconn from a similar situation --- Brimah? --- and he did better. In both cases, there is enough promise to keep an open mind. I have that but I don't believe there is much documented proof to move off the hope square. It's like waiting on the Grandy bus to arrive.

Okay, Manning went up .83 ppg in his last ten games. If that's the measure for "offensive improvement" count me in the camp that is still waiting before I make that pronouncement. If I'm the coach and I get to the 7th or 8th OOC game (many of which are "buy" games as noted in the schedule/record prediction folly) and John's improvement remains marginal, I cut bait and move Gillmann and Jolly in for the future. At least I've got them for three plus more years.

Your trust in reports is admirable. Was '13 your grad year? Or your matriculation year? In any case let me be the first to caution you that reports and layup lines in practice mean squaw-doosh to quote Tony Reali. Research "Deiner ,Drew." I played with many guys who were great practice players, batting practice Babe Ruth's, shoot-around uni-bombers, and practice field Dick Butkuses. Come game time, not so much. And if you are going to speculate on McBroom's regression as part of a transfer year sit down, here comes Yacoubou. I don't believe that was the case --- I think the scouting report coupled with height and release point caught up to Austin, that's all.

I think the future is bright; the present of 2014-15,not so much. I'm applying a different standard for evaluation, and it's not the won-loss record or the number of wins.

@Taj....... You are correct that sample size for freshmen was small but in the limited minutes they showed much more promise then you have given them credit for. Using Brimah from UConn to say he played in the same situation as Lancona and Agbeko, and he did better is erroneous. Brimah showed more because he played in 40 games, started 17 and averaged 16.2 minutes per game. Games begin in November and you will be just as wrong then as you are now in your assessment of this team.

  9. Can't believe thread is 6 pages and counting long. Just about any act that anyone does daily can be interpreted as good or bad. It all comes down to whom is talking about it and their life experience. The kids did what they did for a guy on the street. It's a new day life goes on.

  10. Ash averaged 2.9 points a game as a sophomore, is it reasonable to expect him to become a big scorer for us? If Agbeko leads us in scoring I will seriously question why he didn't play at all this season, but injuries could be the obvious answer. Although with what we are losing, everyone will have a chance to compete for substantial roles and the points have to come from somewhere. I am interested to see where the points come from next fall. The recruiting class looks real solid on paper, but not sure any of them are scorers.

I can only go with what I have seen behind closed doors. Ash did average 2.9 but you couldnt expect him to average more if he wasn't given the opportunity to get on the floor as much, but when given time he scored, rebounded, and defended well. Also from what I know, his limited time was based more on personality differences rather then not being able to do what he does.

Same with Agbeko I can only go with what I have seen. He is or will be a big time scorer. Why we didn't see him that much is as good of a question as why we didn't see Crawford yesterday. Only staff can answer that. But I can say Agbeko is on a different level offensively when I have seen the freshmen

  11. @billikenbill... Glad to inform you we should finish in the top 5 of A10 and better then 50% chance of making NCAA tournament. The team will be bigger and more athletic. Staff may not have used freshmen much outside of complimentary roles to maintain what had been built to work. But freshmen based on practice observation were the equal and in some cases better then some of the upperclassmen playing bulk of the minutes. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you see next season. Ash and Agbeko are stud offensive players whom should lead in points. Manning is arriving offensively and Tanner and Mike C will shoot long ball very well. McBroom is improving into a solid player. Point guard is a big question mark but hopefully one Reynolds is ahead of the game. Should be a pretty good offensive team; but will have to growup some defensively

  12. SLU has a great shot against Louisville. We can still play our game and win. They really only play 7 with an 8th player getting limited minutes. Hope we play 11 guys and we slow possessions down and make them D for long stretches, and go right at Harrell. That rotation is small once Harrell is out. We matchup with the guards well. McCall should go at Smith offensively; hoping to make Smith take offensive load on his shoulders and forgetting his teammates.

    Let's go Billikens

I like our chances in this one; Sweet 16 here we come.

  13. I have confidence in the staff, but will have to say a fair amount of responsibility of our recent struggles goes on the staff. Players are mentally and physically banged up (as are other teams). Jet is still banged up and is playing like it, Evans was solid in the last game but still below his past capabilities. The adjustment for Tanner was good and allows team to revert back to a similar look like last year, but don't agree that this adjustment should be at the expense of Crawford who has been at least as good as Barnett. The staff's loyalty to upperclassmen has and may be our downfall. Team was built to defend but has not been doing too much of that recently. I have seen enough of this team behind closed doors to know what Crawford has done so far he could do and what Tanner did yesterday he could do as well. Once the younger players have been given real minutes they have produced as well or exceeded production of seniors. So that leads me to Agbeko, whom I understand is not 100% but anyone close enough to this team knows that 2 best one on one players are Jett and Agbeko. How is it you can't find minutes for this guy when seniors aren't putting the ball in the basket. Loyalty is good but wins are what count at this stage of the season. Kansas was struggling last week and Bill Self went 12 deep to try to find an answer.
