  1. @jeffborzello: John Calipari, Jim Crews and Duke assistant Nate James here for Jayson Tatum.

crews has now watched every one of Tatum's games since the open period started.

    Hope Justin approves

Has it just been Crews or does he have any assistants with him?

  2. Most kids that grow up in Stl will defend St. Louis till death. As much as St. Louisans shoot themsleves in the foot with the ###### we pull, stl born and raised always take a lot of pride in their hometown. Add that to the fact that his parents both went to SLU and his godfather dominated at

SLU, I can see why he is strongly considering us still. Not saying Lee or Beal didn't have hometown pride, but they also didn't have their inner family circle having blue and white running through their veins.

Well based on his final four, I don't think there is any denying that Blue and white is running through his veins.

  3. Funny cuz I just read a 4 page article in sports illustrated all about him staying home. His AAU coach is quoted saying he believes Tatum will make an unconventional decision

Was there an entire 4 page article just about him? I have read the little paragraph from si with his dad's quote at the end but not sure if there was more in the magazine. At the end of the paragraph they did say that his decision will "shock" the basketball world, which, let's face it, there is only 1 choice on his final four that would shock the basketball world.

Also, was the AAU quote in the si article?

  4. Nah. Our recruitment of him isn't to try show why we're better than Duke or the other schools. If it was we wouldn't stand a chance. We're different. We're the hometown team. We're his family's team. And he can win here. And he can be a lottery pick after playing here. He can build a legacy here of monstrous proportions.

I don't think the point of showing him that is to say we are better than Duke but basically it is to say that he may be impressed right now with the fact Duke is national champions, but they can just as easily be one and done the next year. Going far in the tournament isn't a guarantee no matter what school he would pick, it really would be on him that year to be the leader to take whatever team as far as it will go.

It is unfortunate that they won the national championship now thinking about it as I'm sure them visiting him in home right after made a good impression. If they would've lost second round and visited him right after, I think the wow factor would be a lot less.

  5. Crews needs to show Tatum the film from the Duke/Mercer game last year and remind him that he could easily be a "one and done" in the tourney at Duke

Or the 2012 Lehigh game upsetting the 2 seed Duke and the 9 seed SLU team making it further than them.

  6. Interesting that he says he could make his decision "before school is out, in the summer, or in the fall". Wonder how close he really is to a decision

I thought the same thing. I also got the impression UNC doesn't really have that much of a chance at all (not that I thought they were high favorites before). Didn't make it seem like a visit was a really high priority for him.

  7. It would also be a nice reminder to his dad that we really want Tatum

He seemed to be enjoying the chants and everything at the all century game.

Do we know that he will be walking around campus? I only ask because it seems he goes down to SLU pretty often so not sure if that is something they do every time or if he may just stay by Chaifetz.

  8. There is something in the works. Whether or not it actually happens will depend on students' willingness.

Does it also involve having Nelly and the St. Lunatics come out in Tatum Billiken jersey's and perform a concert on campus? That would be pretty cool.

  9. I have a feeling ku was higher than Mizzou.

According to Charlie Marlow from the 2 Fox, Mizzou was not in the top 5. He said he knew the top 5 a few weeks ago which I'm sure from Justin Tatum when he was in studio talking to him about high school basketball he told him the top 5 off the record.

So I'd have to agree Mizzou was not 5th, at least not for a few weeks.

  10. By the way, I hear he will be on campus for a visit april 15.

In a couple interviews he has said he is down at SLU every other week. He has already made one official visit, what does he do differently on the official visits compared to when he says he is on campus every other week? Is it just he can sit down with the coaches more and go over how he would fit in their system?

It isn't a bad thing that he is trimming his list down in the next week or two and has a visit scheduled with us next week is it?

  11. It only hurts if the staff was going to play him.

This is an interesting player to lose. Do you fill his scholarship and have one less for class of 2016?

You have to keep it open for 2016 right? Would that only be one in that class if we don't? I know the Glaze possibility was brought up in the Lancona thread but could be opportunity for him.

Based on how people talk about the 2016 class, it seems to be strong so unless there is a real solid recruit or transfer, I would prefer to have as many they can for that class.

  12. I know it doesn't matter, but how were we not among the first to recruit and offer Jayson?

Did they offer you when you were in eighth grade?
No, SLU didn't offer me until the end of ninth grade.
Were they one of the first to get on-board?
No, they were one of the last.

Wouldn't that be right around Majerus sickness? His freshmen year in high school was 12-13 right? So 11-12 was 8th grade which was Majerus and I am not sure how much recruiting of 8th graders he did (or even if he would have went after him as hard considering he will be a one and done).

I have heard Crews say before they didn't recruit much his first year during the season (year of Majerus death in December) because he wanted focus to be on players and dealing with the Majerus death so that would be the 12-13 year. They got on him right after that (end of freshmen year or 9th grade).

  13. -I don't know the depth of the relationship between the two of them but I would like The Legend to be promoting SLU if FBJT is asking and perhaps even if he isn't

-FBJT is scheduled to be at Duke this weekend, maybe the roof will leak in Cameron or the trough pissers won't be to his liking, if he has to mingle (or dangle) with the commoners

I think Hughes is promoting SLU to him. There was the instagram picture a month or so ago he sent to him of the retired SLU jersey's asking like "what are we gonna do now." He tweeted at him after he was first ranked #1 in 2016 telling him congrats and hash tagging it OhyeaSLU. I also remember after Ben tweeted Jayson had an offer from like Florida or some big school a couple years ago, Larry replied to him saying he hear is going to go to SLU, return of the home town kids.

Those are just a few things I have seen publicly but I'm sure he's pushing SLU but I also have no idea how often they talk other than those types of things. Larry still seems very proud of the fact he went there. He wasn't at the 100 ceremony but instagramed a couple pics the day selections were made and another one the day of saying thanks and wish he could've been there.

Stipanovich and Grawer talk the possibility of Tatum to MIZ/SLU on Frank's show

    Disclaimer: I haven't listened yet.

Nothing too earth shattering. Frank mentions Earl Austin Jr mentioned the other day that SLU doesn't really have to recruit him as much as stay in touch and make sure he knows, if he wants to stay home, he can. Anybody know if this was a radio interview? Anything else Earl said?

Other than that, they brought up the stuff everybody here does in just how big Larry Hughes was staying home and how they (a Hughes, Bonner) are looked at differently locally from a Carrawell. They said hopefully people around him are telling him the home town hero he can be and guarantee it would lead to more locals going to SLU. No insight on his recruiting.

  15. I am newer and don't post often so might have missed it but I think he has been planning on visiting soon anyways. Back on October 2nd he was tweeting with Miles Reynolds saying that he's been talking to Roby and that he plans on heading to SLU soon. Probably just going to talk to Crews and visit the other players there.

  16. Saw this article mentioned on the Holy Land message board as well. I was searching for the thread that discussed how our APR is trending upward and had basically bottomed out after last year...anyone able to help out?

I thought I had heard a couple years ago that it was low because of transfers and should be coming up but when I still saw it was that low wasn't sure when this was suppose to start going up. I would like to read that thread as well because I couldn't find anything that explained it.
