  1. I'm just tired of all the headlines around the interweb being "Cardinals fan Bobby Metzinger yatta yatta". He's a diehard Yankees guy who hates the Red Sox and lives in STL. As much as I hate the Cards' Unicorn and best fan tomfoolery(spoken from a cards fan), don't throw him in with us.

  2. OK couple of different things going on here and I helped to veer this thread off course so I feel obligated to right the ship.

Much like the military, it is imperative that we get this board to be a positive environment of sharing ideas/information regarding Billiken Basketball and other SLU related sports. Civility in those remarks will aid the free sharing of ideas. When that civility breaks down people must be dealt with. Now we have 2 separate locations for airing grievances, Salinas, KS and Home Depot Parking Lot. I think we just need to go back to Salinas, KS as the only official location of airing grievances. With gas prices being what they are these grievances must be reserved for serious differences like did Daniel Lisch get a raw deal or how much does SPUMAC suck. Furthermore, when you meet you must present PAYSTUBS and then Indian Leg wrestle. My apologies Moytoy, indigenous peoples leg wrestle.

wait, how long ago were people saying Daniel LIsch got a raw deal? The kid got a free year of college and to learn from one of the best coaches ever. I'd sure like to reopen this. Direct me to 5 year old threads so we can properly discuss

  3. Thanks SLU_PT. I do not like the fact that the author linked back to the Drew article. I was hoping that would fade away into oblivion.

Yeah the comments on there are damning, as well.

Dustin McGuire's parents wrote a big long comment about how RM forced him out.

  4. Jim Crews, Saint Louis Billikens

I think Crews will have a breakout sophomore season because I really likeDwayne Evans' chances to have a breakout senior season. Evans plays much larger than his listed height of 6-foot-5 would suggest. He crashes the glass at both ends of the floor, makes no less than 57 percent of his 2s, and hits better than 75 percent of his free throws.

And that's just for starters. I'll go even further. If you're looking for a quick-and-dirty thumbnail of what Saint Louis could be in 2013-14, you could do worse than Wichita State last season. Like the Shockers in 2011-12, the Billikens last season were much better than a lot of people realized, but lost earlier than expected in the NCAA tournament anyway. (Recall that in the 2012 tournament, Wichita State lost in the round of 64 to Virginia Commonwealth.) And, like Gregg Marshall's team, SLU may be merely about as good as it was the previous season, but may achieve a much better result in the field of 68.

True, Crews will have to replace Kwamain Mitchell and key reserve Cody Ellis, but Evans,Mike McCall, Rob Loe and Jordair Jett are all back for another go. In fact, Crews is apparently so confident in his personnel that he told redshirt freshman Jared Drew that there was no further need for the young man's services.

That's a tough break for Drew (not to mention a somewhat unseemly visual coming from Crews), but the level of returning talent is good news for Billiken fans. SLU had far and away the best defense in the Atlantic 10 last season, one that held conference opponents to just 0.92 points per possession. Stretching back to the tenure of Rick Majerus, playing Saint Louis has always been an ordeal for opposing offenses. That ordeal will continue unabated in Crews' sophomore campaign, and the Billikens will be a threat to reach their first Sweet 16 since (yes, this really is correct) 1957. Talk about a breakout.

  5. so basically, "20th century alums shut up. we deserve to do whatever we want because we paid more to go to school than you and have been brought up to be inconsiderate and bad mannered selfish oaf's"

In a nutshell. Maybe the focus was too much on tuition cost, but more should have been about the changing of the times.

1)People don't say oaf anymore. I'm highly offended.

2)Culture changes. I mean, you guys went to college pre-Internet porn and cell phones.

3)relax people. This is the age where you can have sideburns, loosen the old necktie up, maybe have a cold schlafly instead of a neat whiskey. Have fun, talk so long as it's good natured. The guys who were talking about the cheerleaders...who cares? They are hot. If you don't think a college aged cheerleader is hot, then those are your own demons.

  6. More generally I think the larger question is how to handle two audiences. Probably since the Soderberg era, the average age of posters has likely only declined. I think with Majerus, and the program becoming a little more prominent, a younger audience joined.

This younger audience approaches Billikens.com differently than the older one, and with this, I think some of the older audience has left (or at least stopped posting but keeps reading). I know I have received some grumbles offline from some of the more old-time posters about some of the younger ones. But how to balance this is tricky since each brings something to the site. For example in terms of recruiting, think of Pistols' recent efforts scouring the twitterverse as a new version of tseugnekillib. And I will admit, I personally love Jimbos posts but agree too many people trying to be Jimbo like. It can be amusing in doses, but not throughout.

Regarding censorship, yes any moderation is censorship. But I think I leave a fair amount of slack on the leash - perhaps too much - and don't see it as too much of a request to try to discourage language on the forum that you would not say even casually to a stranger sitting next to you at Chaifetz.

That's about right. You have the old school fans who remember curfews for Gries and spending weekends baking cookies with the priests while paying $200/semester for tuition....and you have us younger guys that spents $20k/semester and went balls to the wall. After re-reading the cheerleader posts, they aren't all that bad. Maybe a little personal...but so be it. As if the older guys are sitting there at Chaifetz during halftime thinking "wow, these young student athletes are wearing camo booty shorts. How fashionable and creative!!!"

  7. Many of you over rate the value of athletic scholarships.

Some scholarship athletes regret their 4 year commitment, the time they spent working out, at practice, traveling, and playing in actual games.

It takes away from the whole college experience, social life, but more important it takes focus away from studies.

A lot of "athletes" that graduate did not give it their best in class, majored in the wrong subject, got so-so grades despite capability to excel and get "A"'s across the board in a meaningful major with future potential.

So they graduated at age 22, then work for 43 goddam years; some wish they had understood that college was for academics and for a 43 year career, being on the "team" for 4 years as your only focus was not worth it. Yes, I mean for those without money, too... get a student loan. I get the finance. Again, over 43 yrs, the scholie is not as important.

This is not absolute, not applicable to all, I am not saying that... sure you can recover, move up, make up for lost time... get a masters.... and basketball is a glorious sport to revel in... but still not always worth it. And most of the other sports are not in that category at all at SLU.

And after 4 years they still have Zero Debt. And they are 22. The world is their oyster.

  8. Here's why you don't rescind scholarships. The potential recruits and their friends/parents/coaches are watching very carefully how these situations workout.

Homer Drew would actually find a better situation for the student/athlete (obligatory Valpo comment) which he did because he cared. Will Crews find Jared Drew a better situation? We shall see.

Yeah well Homer Drew is one of the most genuine, nicest individuals there is. I've been to probably 10 Valpo games over the years(brother went there)...there situation is different from SLU. Crappier league, terrible facilities(seriously, the ARC is bad), disgusting colors, and terrible weather. SLU has more to offer.
