I concur - no pissing contest. I honestly cannot remember the number of times I have 'rolled' my ankle, but the return to full play can vary drastically, depending on ligament damage, number, size and location of fragments of bones in foot or around ankle. I know, personally, it would have been painful for my foot to properly support free throw shooting after some ankle/foot injuries...
