  1. I'm not ready to call RL a stiff, but GG should get to smack RL every time RL half asses it for a rebound.

I think I might be. If you are 6' 11" and you are one-dimensional, and that dimension is outside shooting and loafing at the three point line, that means you are totally ineffective if your shot isn't falling.

  2. I had a late lunch at the Fieldhouse today before the UD game. There were about 10 Bills fans there and the waitress was wearing a SLU t-shirt. It was depressing, though, to see Mi$$OU fans in there too and their game didn't start for 6 more hours ??!! You can not serve both God and mammon !

That is a typical problem with SLU in general. We all sit here and say "why in the world is Fieldhouse not an obvious SLU bar?" and Fieldhouse's response would be "because if we want to stay in business, we have to cator to Missouri and Illinois fans also, we can't stay in business otherwise." We're getting there, but as fans we have our own part to do.

  3. Glad a bunch of you can make it to Sedgwick's today! Just mention the SLU area;they are reserving a few tables. I will be with you in spirit. We will try to find a spot for the Xavier game on the 28th! Check Twitter @sluchicago and Facebook (Chicago SLU Alumni Club) for more.

    Joe

Can you drop the link for that Chicago SLU Alumni facebook group? Can't find it anywhere.

  4. Guys,

A buddy and I went to Sedgewicks for the game against Xavier (we were the only two). Its not a bad option but we would be really far down on their list. Becketts sponsors Nebraska, which is really only for football. I think we could get Becketts or Finley Dunnes to be our bar. I haven't been to Finley Dunnes but Becketts is a real nice place. The problem is that we have SO FEW games on TV that no bar sees it worthwhile to be our "sponsor bar", nor do we ever have a turnout of more than a few people. Joe and I have talked and I echo his statements where we have tried endlessly to get a SLU bar in Chicago. The Duke watch party last year was great except that so few people actually showed.

Thanks to whoever put this one together at Sedgewicks. Myself and two fellow SLU alumns from 06 will be there watching.

Maybe we try Beckett's then in the future. I don't think the TV setup at Sedgwick's is particularly great. Worth a shot.

  5. Good to hear. Hope they get a good crew there today. You going Jimmy?

I can't today because I have to be home for some domestic tasks involving my condo sale, but i'll be hitting the live stream on Fox but I'll certainly lead the hunt to get our flag planted at a bar. We'll be playing Thursday or Friday on 3/15 or 3/16; I know it.

  6. I use sites like this all the time, but in all honesty the television networks have the right to protect their product from people redistributing it for free.

On the other hand, why is there not a legit, legal solution to this? If the A-10 or NCAA offered you a $9.99 per month or $29.99 per season high quality feed of all of their games, would you buy it? I sure would. This is a clear business opportunity to me for the A-10 and other conferences to make money and supply a product that we all want and are willing to pay for.

  7. Just have those independent bars follow Two Times around for a weekend as part of the recruiting process. The bar tabs from his crew will get them to get a SAINT LOUIS banner on the front door in no time.

    Sadly/Fortunately, he's right.

Four Corner's bars are nice, but they are all taken. We had Schoolyard sponsor our flag football team, but they are official for Illinois football and Marquette basketball and they get completely packed. That won't work.

If you have a bar in the West Loop that might take us on, that would be great. We could handle a split with someone like LSU or whatever. Just need a home base to watch games.

  8. I have contacted Sedwick's and they are reserving a small area for us from 4pm-6pm tomorrow. Just ask for the SLU area and they should be able to help you out.

Thanks. One thing I think we could do - *when* we make the tournament, maybe we can do a roll call on this board, I can grab some of my other SLU alumns that are too scared to be on it and we can contact a bar that doesn't have many affiliations and do a bit of a trial event there for the tourney, hopefully to parlay that into some sort of home base for SLU games in the future. If I have to put up with it being a Cardinals/Rams bar as well, I'll fall on the grenade. Sometimes it helps when you have a new bar come on the scene, or a bar that doesn't get a lot of love to switch over (e.g., Kirkwood went from an Ohio State bar to Nebraska, Declan's caved in and became an Oklahoma bar, etc.).

You bring up a good point, though. We clamor and complain about not having a bar for certain games...but what's in it for the bar? Can we get enough people, consistently to validate them putting up some SLU crap and showing the games? It remains to be seen. But there was a time when we had to get on a bus behind Gries, ride to the Kiel Center for a game, risk getting shot, then ride back to campus. Now you have a good pre-game bar scene and a kick ass stadium on campus. Getting 30 people in a bar should be a breeze. Let's get this done.

  9. We can try. I think realistically, we're never going to have what Ohio State or Michigan State have up here, which is 5-10 bars each with 200+ people filled every weekend for games, but we should have one go to bar for SLU. Basically every other school up here has one.

We've historically done a bad job of alumni outreach in many of our cities, especially Chicago where the critical mass exists to have an alumni bar (EVERY SCHOOL HAS ONE HERE) and now that our basketball team is trending upward, it is an important aspect of our program to be able to extend it's reach beyond STL's boarders.

Maybe I'll start a new thread, see who I can corral in Chicago and we can make a pitch to Sedgwick's or some other bar up here that makes sense.

  10. I will be in Chicago with a few other Bills fans this Saturday and wont be able to make the game at the Fetz. Anyone in the area going to be out at a bar watching or have any suggestions on where to go?

We're weak in that we haven't officially declared an alumni bar (one of my gripes with our Alumni program in our "club cities"), but Sedgwick's is traditionally where you could go. It is a big Cardinals bar and has hosted watch parties in the past, but I would call them ahead of time and make sure they will show the game.

If you want to wander into enemy territory, Finley Dunne's on the northern end of Lakeview (Roscoe and Lincoln) is the official University of Dayton Alumni chapter bar (I think they do Ole Miss also). They will definitely have the game on with sound.

We're one of the only schools I can think of that doesn't have our own Alumni bar in Chicago. We need to get on that pronto.

  11. That all started with the three point play by Conklin and the technical foul. From there, you could see SBU's body language was basically "just keep the clock running so we can get the hell out of here and go home."; bunch of losers.

  12. You're right, it is a wonder this thing got made. If my friends approached me with any element of this idea, I can't imagine they'd be able to finish the second sentence before I would reply, "No, I'm out." It is a staggering level of douchiness that got this made.

Not only that, but how about a "hey, do you think we should really be calling out KU like that? We probably shouldn't be going there, they could easily retaliate and rip us apart...whoops, too late."

  13. I just watched it. These kids should be expelled. This song should go down as one of the 3 worst sports songs ever. "Go Cubs Go" and "One Shining Moment" are the other two I'd put in this rare company.

    Agreed.

This video is absolutely amazing when you think about it: someone came up with this idea, sold their tool friends on it, wrote the lyrics, created the music, synched the music and lyrics, choreographed a music video, recruited another two dozen pubes from Mizzou to participate in the music video, shot each bit and piece of the music video at multiple venues around campus, then spliced, edited and molded the video content into the catastrophe you just saw.

During that process, not ONE of these idiots stood up and said “whoa, hold on, we look like total knobs, this couldn’t get any cornier and embarrassing. I’m not ready to have this thing thrown in my face for the next ten years, I’m out.” Instead, they blew through all kinds of red lights and said “screw it, we’re putting this on YouTube…who’s ready for random beatings on campus?”

If I were Texas, Baylor, K-State and especially Kansas, I would play this video any and every time we played Mizzou at home so Mizzou’s starting lineup could hang their heads in shame before the opening tip.

  14. '98. I remember that year fondly. I was at the game for #62 when my buddy Tim Forneris retrieved the ball.

One time at Humphries, I bought my buddy a beer and a shot in exchange for walking up to Forneris and saying in a cheesy voice - "Mr. McGwire...I think I have something that belongs to you..."

    He took it well.

  15. The selection committee still uses the RPI quite prominently and as of right now, our RPI is 42, Temple 13, Xavier 46, St Joseph’s and UMass 55 & 56, Dayton 61. The average win/loss RPI isn’t really looked at as what the total RPI nets out to (I believe).

So objectively, we are right there and subjectively, Jay Bilas ranks us #35 and properly calls us out as a good team that can play with and beat anybody, but really lacking in the “signature win” column. That’s partially because the non-conference wins we collected against Washington, Villanova, etc. didn’t turn out to be as significant as we thought they might.

Either way, despite the lack of Top-25 teams, we still play a very solid schedule, even if nobody notices. We need to continue collecting “solid wins” and the opportunities for those down the stretch are plentiful. We just can’t drop a stinkbomb like we did at UMass and we should find our way in the tournament. It is a spot for us to lose, there is no reason not to make the tournament at this point.
