  1. I'd love to see a list with the attendance figures for all of these events. Obviously basketball has good attendance and soccer and volleyball have some decent attendance and have warranted coverage, but how many people really care about the swimming, tennis, track teams enough to attend those events.

How many people on this site even look up the results for the swimming, tennis and track teams from day to day?

I follow the swimming and track results.

  2. Who else has a little extra spring in their step today knowing basketball practice starts today? I don't know, maybe it is because it is Friday, or that the first game is only a couple weeks away, or maybe it is because i started drinking early this morning? Who knows, but it is a great day!

    Go Billikens!

  3. I didn't used to mark them OT and probably start as many as anyone, but in the interest of keeping the soccer haters happy ... who have in the past felt obligated to hijack the threads, I usually label them now. I don't think it's any big deal ... it just identifies the thread ... It used to seem just putting soccer in the headline wasn't clear enough for some

Sure this might be primarily a basketball board, but last time I read, the header reads Billikens.com and not Billikenhoops.com.

Hopefully even the soccer haters support all the Billikens.

  4. I know what you are saying 3star but I'm pretty sure that if you had the four players on and then had Rick, you'd get at least five sides of the story. This is a great example of spin --- and how all of us do it. I believe that Rammer will shill for the program. I have met Rammer and talked to him but I am not near enough to the local radio to hear him over and above that. But I'm betting he'd go that way much like Harry Kalas would pump the Phillies, Sonny Jurgenson the Redskins, John Riggins his own radio show and so on. And I am jsut as certain that someone somewhere will disagree and we'd have to go from there.

I don't particularly care for where we are today but this is the reality of it all. Its all about the almighty dollar. Same reason there is a thread on here about problems in Division III. The problem is that there is a lot of subjectivity going in to things that are sadly weighed objectively by wins and losses and going to money-rich tournaments. It is what it is. Mistakes were made. If you hired a guy or gal who was a totally zero, you could fire that person on the spot, once you've documented all the ills associated with that hire in objective fashion. We all know about talent evaluation or waht appears to have been a lack thereof.

Happens all the time. Ben Hansborough. Julian Winfield. Ted Mimlitz. Jamal Johnson. Melvin Robinson. Ricky Frazier. Billy McCaffery. Drew Lavender. Jason Edwin. Ricky Cranford. The school and/or coach will spin it one way. The other schools another way. Players another way. Parents another.

How many of you believe, to the core, that Saint Louis University and Rick Majerus should have been held to the task of honoring these athletic scholarships for the next ten years (Maguire/Knollmeyer two each, Mitchell/Relaphorde three)? I don't know is this is allowable but I would go to the kid and say look, basketball scholarship is gone, not renewed. We can either help you find another suitable location, agree to honor your time here with an academic scholarships (grades necessary to renew) or we can shake hands and go our seperate ways.

This might not be a popular piece of information, but aren't all scholarships 1 year agreements that have to be renewed every year. The players know this going in.

  5. As a college basketball fan (I don't really care for KU or OSU) I sure hope Self does not leave. The job he did at Tulsa was great but he soon left for greener pastures. Then he built Illinois into a Final Four but left for KU before being able to enjoy it. Now, he has KU into the Final Four. I, for one, am interested in watching him sustain a top program for 10 years or more rather than starting over again. No doubt he could turn OSU around if he wanted to.

You must not know many KU fans. I would much rather watch Self build and sustain a program at OSU than Kansas. Oklahoma State fans are pretty good fans. KU fans don't compare.

  6. Source: Sutton out after only two seasons as Cowboys coach

Sean Sutton, who kept the family name in place at Oklahoma State after succeeding his father as coach, will not return for a third season, a source close to the program told ESPN Radio's Doug Gottlieb.

Sutton will be paid for the remaining three years on his five-year contract, the source said Tuesday.

A former Oklahoma State guard and an assistant on Eddie Sutton's coaching staff, Sean Sutton was unable to get the Cowboys to the NCAA tournament. He was 39-29 with two first-round NIT defeats.

With a succession plan already in place, Sutton first was named interim coach at Oklahoma State in February 2006 after his father took a leave of absence following an arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Eddie Sutton did not coach the Cowboys again but did jump back into the game at San Francisco as the Dons' interim coach. Sutton, who said he would not return to the program, has 804 career victories.

Scott Sutton, the youngest son of Eddie Sutton, is the coach at Oral Roberts.

Andy Katz is reporting a rumor that T. Boone Pickens is preparing to offer a bunch of money to Bill Self to come back to his alma mater. This rumor first came to pass back in January, and was gaining some momentum around the Big XII tournament.

  7. Many people on this board have speculated as to why SLU has had several bad offensive games. Because the bad games happened on the road that could be an explanation but they have had some OK road games as well. Because BC and Kent St happened early in the year the Majerus "adjustment" argument has been used. However, there have been bad offensive performances in January as well (and even though I hope not they could happen again). Obviously, good defenses play a role but Dayton and GW have defenses that are below average (Kent State and BC have OK defenses but their best defensive performances were against SLU).

Anyway, one possible factor is also shoot backdrops. I will never forget the first time I ever shot a basketball in an arena (old Brown County Arena) and the difficulty I had adjusting. It always took several shots to adjust when I shot at the old Kiel. Anyway, college players have a lot better ability adjust than I do but it may be a factor. Statistically, at least it seems to be quite dramatic this year with 3 of our 4 worst offensive outings happening in a short backdrop (LaSalle was also with a short backdrop but we did great offensively).

Here is the average Offensive Efficiency (use Ken Pomeroy's numbers explained here http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/four_factors/) under three different shooting backdrops:

Pro/Long Backdrop (ScottKielvis and Pitt): 105.3

    College/Medium Backdrop (Dayton/SMS/Richmond): 90.9

    HS/Short Backdrop (GW/BC/LaSalle/Kent): 72.9

Kent is actually tough to classify as it is pretty steep like the other "high school style"/ short backdrop on one end and more like the "college style"medium backdrops on the other (maybe I could use half stats!)

If you think Home and Away are just different there is still a significant difference between the Long/Medium Backdrop away efficiency and the short backdrops on the road

    Away Long/Medium Backdrop: 101.3

    Away Short Backdrop: 72.9

FYI, UMass has a medium backdrop so we should be fine.

Considering we don't practice in the arena that we play our home games in, it would seem to me that everygame would be "a road game".

  8. i hate bobby knight. but i have to say, the answer is to immediately fire sampson and immediately hire knight.

if knight says no, they still should immediately fire sampson.

indiana also would immediately fall on their sword and ban themselves from the ncaa tourney this season.

my bet is they dont have the fortitude to do it.

the fact that sampson lied to the investigators is huge imo. bad enough they cheated, they basically tried to cover it up as well.

I'm an Indiana fan, and think Bobby Knight was great. That said, they are getting what was coming to them in hiring Sampson and getting rid of Davis. With the team they have, there is no way they would volunteer to sit out the tourney. Just my $.02.
