  1. Missouri has a football progeam....they operate in a BCS conference .....they gets larger funds allocated from TV and post season appearances (but support a larer number of sports programs).......but they also play half their games mid week in a metro area of 125,000 - not 2.5 million..... mpst of its fan base is more than two hours away on a roundtrip for any home game......and they were coming off years of on an off court issues that had turned supporters away in disgust.....

I bring this up not to offer "excuses" or a rationale for the turnaround in MU home attendance, but to simply point out the programs have different marketing resources and issues to handle or market around....

MU put fans back in seats (which is different from season ticket sales), when three things occurred.......they won......their kids played with passion and in an attractive style to watch.....their players engaged the fan base.....

Now, I'm not saying that is the formula that must be followed...nor am I saying that some of the above has not occured at SLU ..........

biut while I agree that SLU could market its product much more effectiviely, that marketing effort becomes much easier when a team wins (and I mean at a high level)......and puts a compelling group of kids n the court that the community as a whole can learn about and interract with....and that the media will invest time to find a myriad of personal storylines.......

then RickMa and Mitchell will be as visible as Spoon and Dobbs once were.....

and fans will be jostling to find a way into every home game.....

  2. This might be a good match up for us. Checking their roster, they return 4 seniors. 2 averaging 9 points, 1 averaged 4 and the other was a manager. Their big gun is gone.

    Just FYI,....

Nebraska has a hard time winning on the road but is tough at home........

Sadler redshirted 4 scholarship players last year, so they are deeper than they first look. .....

They rotated 4 guards - Harvey, Miller, Anderson, and Dagarudo (sp) so stats can be deceiving.....the latter 2 are 2/3 type players.....Anderson effective from outside - a spot up 3 pt player....Dagarudo is a rangy 6'6", long arms, pentrates, rebounds, likes to play at the rim......Harvey was their best player - outside of Maric - in the second half...he is a scorer, avg'd in double figures after a horrible, slow start....

outside of Maric they were a smaller team for the Big XII - they lose a lot in Maric but get bigger overall......

a good match up for the Bills.......but again, they play much better in Lincoln, where crowds are improving...

FWIW, I agree that a road win over Nebraska is more impressive than a win over a mid major with a comparable RPI

  3. A quick google search of the author's name shows that he writes for the Missourian, a paper out of Columbia. The article was surely written for that paper so I don't blame the author. I blame the post for not sending their own writer or hiring Nate to do an article that covers the SLU, SIU and Mizzou players.

Sure looked like Tom Timmerman was sitting to Nate's left as both talked to Earl Austin at the press table.....

Seems the question would be better posed on stltoday.com

  4. Lincoln. Nebraska is the cleanest college town and they have "pro" type greeters to meet their recruits (which I have overheard the handlers calling them "assets" and I'm sure we can't compete on that level; but they talk Big Red football 12 months a year- they do have a much improved basketball program and track is the real deal there. It is college campus in a cornfield the main drag through town is "Cornhusker Hwy". It is not going to go down well for kids who want to go to major league baseball or have the city experiences of Art Museums and Symphony within walking distance

Far be for me to say a good word about Lincoln, but you DO realize Jones is from that center of sophistication that is Ft Wayne Indiana?

In any case, according to the Omaha rag, he has NOT committed......link below

    http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=3918...;u_sid=10366203

  5. He committed to Nebraska. (For the non-subscriber folks)

Jones was a long shot for the Billikens anyway. Now we'll wait and see if he qualifies.

the latter is the operative phrase........schools have slow played or backed off this kid over that concern

in any case, good luck with Doc and the bugeaters......

  6. MU has talked to Dressler but has not offered.....he and the Eagles just played in a tournament in Columbia....

To my knowledge the other Rock Bridge kid Kreklow as not been offered either but there is some interest.....Moberly has a 6'6 kid in the same class that is getting some looks....

To my understanding, the only kid MU has offered for 2010 is former Celtic Paul Pressey's son, a PG.....Pressey and Anderson were close at Tulsa...

Dressler's a nice player with some skills,.... but I think MU feels others will fit better in their system.....

There are some nice players in outstate Missouri.....The guard ftom Glasgow MO, Jay Lee, is playing for KC Pump 'n Run...a very nice team, alongside Micheal Dixon....Lee's very quick...from a small school, this summer will give some indication how well he plays with and against better players...

and getting an "in" with Pump 'n Run would help.....along with MoKan Spiece, (Reed) both KC AAU programs have some nice 16's and 17's.....

Mike Porter for Sikeston bears watching.......I think he could be similar to Luke Meyer but as a SF....

  7. Just my 2 cents.........

I would imagine despite excellent advice is structuring the estate, the two kids are going to be looking at a big tab due the IRS once the estate settles...

they either refinance the team (and sell) or sell it sooner than later......taxes will most likely be due within a year...nine mos after estate closes...and Kronke as a minorty owner probably doesn't like that approach to refinance...........

The Rosenbloom's own 80%....Kronke owns 20%........brother and sister have to agreeon a strategy, but its drives the value if they do not have a stadium deal in place...prior to the sale....

IMO. it is extremely doubtfull, sufficent funds will be raised via bonds (and dedicated taxes to repay said bonds) to renovate the stadium....meaning the Rams could potentially leave within the decade.....just the scenario Shaw wants for the Rosenbloom kids........

Seems to me what is needed is.....

resolution by th Rosenblooms of their strategy...do they NEED to sell?...

if so, will Kronke decide to rearange his interests and pursue?

To keep local, under new ownership or not, ammass the public support for cutting a deal to keep the team in St Louis....

A power broker needs to emerge form the business or publice side with some real clout......the kind that was seen in the Civic Progress days....of course, lead by the Post Dispatch and its editorial page....as well changes in the business community...they're in short supply.....

If nobody steps forward to lead the local effort to cut a new deal for the stadium, new ownership or not, I would bet the Rams exit the community at some point...

  8. Bryant Allen is defintely a big prospect. He wasnt left off intentionally, I said I would name some prospects, not all.

Good choices V (or STL Hoops Insider).....I'd add these guys should be watched too.....

    Class of 2009

    6' 7" PF Will Kirksey (Lafayette)....probably a mid major....but a strong rebounder...physical player...

6' 8" PF Mike Hoffman (Gibault)....nice all around game

    6' 10" PF Will Clark (Summit).....maybe a step slow...

(and I wish Parkway West's Jerry Pankey could play the way he does.....but just be 8 inches taller)

    Class 2010

    6' 7" PF Nick Droege (CBC)...may be a tweener

6' 2" SG McPhearson "Mac" Moore (MICDS)....fearless...great shooter...

6' 10" C Meyers Leonard (Robinson IL) ....local AAU player....a definite project...but he's geting looks from high D1s

Scott Pohle (Parkway South) will probably play baseball at the next level...and I think you will see Marquis Hill (Trinity) put the pads on Saturdays....perhaps in Columbia, certainly at a BCS school......JMHO

Time to get out of the box of the Metro area and look state wide.....

I'd look hard at Sikeston's 6'6" Mike Porter,

Se Mo's Kona Ealy who plays for the Eagles (but another possible BCS football recruit in 2010)

6'8" Jordan Dressler (2009) from Columbia Rock Bridge.....he is former DeSmet star Mark Dressler's son.....

KC area is loaded .....with more than Nino Williams and Mike Dixon for 2009 & 2010

  9. sorry if this information has been posted previously.....

JPRock, who reports primarily on prep football, at showmesportsonline.com.....

has just posted a story about 6' 3" 2 sport recruit BJ Ray from Waynesville MO......regarding basketball recruiting....

"...And Football isn`t the only sport that Ray is being recruited for. He is also a stand out in basketball and was named All Conference and All District in that sport as well.

" I am hearing from SLU,Missouri St. and Wisconsin for basketball. SLU`s coach came by and has talked to me. Missouri St. seems pretty interested and Wisconsin is sending me mail."

On how picking a school will be determined in the future?

"I will keep my options open right now. Distance isn`t a factor. I am an Army kid so moving isn`t a problem for me. I will pick a school based on my major I want to be in, sports medicine..."

    here's a link.......

  10. In the 2009 class, we've offered a 6'7 WF from the Kansas City area named Ivo Baltic. We're the only offer listed with Scout but he did get some postive Internet guru reviews for his play in a tournament this past weekend. Hopefully I'll get to see him play during summer vacation.

from Park Hills South....he plays for Spiece Mo Kan All Stars on the AAU circuit.........

KC has a number of good players...he's one of them....active, a rebounder, scores inside

you're right, he just played well at Lawrence last weekend...

  11. ".....it is clear that RM wants to get us into the Big Ten, somehow...."

You wrote ths post with your tongue planted firmly in your cheek, correct? I hope so.........

Not only does SLU not have a football program.....SLU does not have the other men's and women's programs required by that conference........

Again, I asume you were joking, but here is not a chance in the world of this even being considered in CHicago.....

  12. This is more evidence of the bigger problem with college basketball. These kids will now be punished because of greedy old men looking to exploit them. Bad news for many student athletes. Hope everything works out for Reed and he does indeed end up a Bill some day.

I would disagee.....the NCAA in wrting, on its site, and via phone, makes itself available ....they have an aggressive outreach - so parents and adult guardians know what is required for student athletes.....whether the adults involved made a wrong decision or simply did not avail themselves to this info. may have happened....people make mistakes....but to say the NCAA "bushwacked" them...or didn't have the athlete in mind is more than a stretch...its simply incorrect.....the NCAA always had issues whether the methods used in both schools provided the core requirements set by the NCAA.....

Here is the link to the NCAA press release noting the same......

    Note the following.....

"...Students currently enrolled in Milestone Christian Academy and Nashville Christian Advancement Academy must have their individual academic records reviewed to be considered in the initial eligibility process. A determination will be made regarding their NCAA initial eligibility status based on this review of their individual academic record...."

  13. Anybody got the lowdown on guys that left the program the last few years? What is the end destination (if any) for Obi Ikeakor and Horace Dixon? I know there was a thread below on Sanjay Watts. What's his 20? I'd like to see the old V-meister come back on and give us updates on all those guys he once endorsed for SLU scholarships. Instead of Where's Waldo, we could hear an update on Locate Leon (Powell). In Vee's class of 2007, he endorsed guys named Jarryd Cole, Aulbury Doss, Rolandis Woodson, dave Stewart, Chris Stokes, Alfred Nelson, and Mike Baker among others. How did they do in their first years in college. Its one thing to endorse, how did all that turn out?

Same goes for 2008 recommendtions in Reggie Spears and Abel Tillman. Ameechie Baldwon and Darren Hobbs. Anthony James. Cornelius Walker. What's the skinny on 2009 names Lonnie Boga , Jerry Pankey and everyone's favorite, Richard Anderson.

How about report cards on those that got away: Xavier Price, Lorenzo Taylor, Will Jones, Kyle Calloway, Mo Smith, James Washington, Sean Kowal and Stephen Jones? I think it woudl be interesting to see how a "player expert" did in predicting who we should have signed. I haven't looked so I really don't know. There was also that kid that got away and walked on at UCLA. The one I do remember and I did look up was legacy pick Monroe Douglas Jr. I did not see him listed at all on the Dayton roster this year when I did look. I hope this question finds him still in school.

I'm not VTime, but if you are serious and really want to know and not just get a dig at a "player expert" as you term it.......here's an update on some....

Leon Powell had a nice year at Indian Hills CC in Iowa....he's still a D1 prospect

Dave Stewart (I assume from Vianney) is on schollie & playing OF for the nationally ranked Nebraska baseball team.....

    Jarryd Cole started for Iowa..........

    Abel Tillman signed with SEMO

Richard Anderson is still uncommitted but is being recruited by D 1 schools........

Sean Kowal played sparingly at Colorado but has since left the program..........

Look, I don't mean to criticze but I see you live in Baltimore.......while the Sun has a nice weekly rundown both on football and basketball recruiting it sure doesn't cover the midwest as much as the ACC and SEC......seems this is a message board and open to all opinions.......certainly there are "insiders" present (not me), and few "experts", Nate being one; the rest are just fans with opinions.........

If you want expertise, I suggest you buck up for Scout (for you Nate) or the other premium sites where you get informed content as well as mesage board opinion.....

Sorry if this comes off as harsh, especially if you meant no insult to VTime......whose opinions are always entertaining if not always accurate.........

  14. For what it's worth I saw JH play several times his senior year in high school. I would say that he was a good ,not great high school player. He is capable of some high level play, however I have seen him make bad basketball decisions on more than one occasion. I am not saying that he could not find a role on the Bill's and be somewhat of a help, but I would disagree with those that think he is the second coming. I am as surprised as anyone that Kentucky is after him.

I saw him several times in his junior and senior years....including one game his senior year when he played well against Washington at St Chas......

I have not seen him at SWIC but its my understanding he has lost weight and has firmed up...he's simply stronger......SWIC plays up tempo....a guard oriented offense....and he thrived in it.......actually SLU, Kentucky, Purdue and MU - just based on their style of play alone - would find a kid like him very attractive, imo......and with Scott Martin's departure from Purdue, all have a need for a kid like him.......

  15. I'm not sure that Ben was ever on campus...I can't seem to get it confirmed anywhere. Word was he wanted to see the campus, but who really knows at this point. I could have been completely off base.

A NCAA "dead" period ended Thursday at Noon......its my understanding Hansbrough is visiting Springfield this weekend....

  16. I don't think there's any question that Martin can get players. What he does with those players is the great unknown. I think he'll be an excellent x and o guy, but he still has to prove it.

In a Rival's article, for subscribers only, Hansbrough is quoted......"Washington State called me today, I've talked to Missouri. St. Louis called me and St. Mary's called me, but I turned both of them down."

It would appear, Mo St., MU, and Purdue are the most likely, and a possible fourth is Colorado (but too far from home).....

I think it comes down to a scholarship at a Valley school or walk on for a year at a Big XII school......

I have no idea on where he goes......despite his brother's decision, there are strong MU ties in the family, but that won't be the deciding factor.......

  17. I had to drive through Columbus, IN yesterday to get to a bank meeting in Bloomington. I don't think there's much top secret info flowing up and down Indiana state highway 46. This guy is just a troublemaker.

In fact, the only thing flowing down 46 right now is water- that state has flooding everywhere.

The former head of the IU Alumni Assn, a Curator (or equivilient), and at least two really major IU athletic donors call Columbus home......lots of Irwin family money and influence in that little town.........

but I don't think there is any way RM is going to IU...........

(BTW, did you honk when you drove by John Mellencamp's home in Brown County?)

  18. "...In terms of the tax dollars, this is a personal point of irritation to me. You are absolutely wrong. We as state taxpayers paid huge amounts for the new basketball arena! So I, as a Billiken fan, made a forced contribution to the Missouri basketball program..."

No, actually you did not and do not. The athletic department is self sustaining. In addition to revenues raised, the department is supported by TSF (Tiger Scholarship Fund). This covers all costs incurred, and in this case, arena operations.

With regard to construction, this too was funded in its entireity via donations, although the University was a conduit for funding.

Tax dollars do indirectly support the University (but not the athletic department) via the state legislature. Whether you wish to "hate on" MU athletics is moot. The University through its graduates, programs, and research provides a return on the tax dollar. It is an asset to the state of Missouri as is SLU.

Don't want to rain on the hate parade, just want gently correct...now, hate on.....

  19. Who is Gavin? Any links on him?

    Thanks, Tarheel

Gavi Wiss is a junior to be at Fort Zumwalt West (after transferring a year ago from Lafayette) - 6'9" post player. Played half a season with the Eagles 16U's this summer.

I think he will develop into a nice player - needs to get stronger and work on offensive side of game - but a prospect ,imo.
