  1. It is certainly amazing how good news such as this barely gets any comments but if they had increased ticket prices by even a penny we'd have a thread 100 posts long about what idiots run the SLU AD.

I think the tiered pricing makes a lot of sense. I doubt this will have a major (greater than 1,000) impact on season ticket sales but it does make the individual games more affordable and should help fill the stadium for the non-conference games in November and December. There is a real danger that season ticket holders currently in the $450 lower bowl end-zones will choose to leave those seats for the upper bowl and cheaper prices, thus leaving empty seats in the lower bowl. Still, I would hope that there will be enough new season tickets sold to counter that to some degree.

Yeah, the plan right now is for us to ditch our $450 season tickets from this year for the $280 seats. Just makes more sense for us and I'm guessing the $280 seats are still pretty good.

  2. Billiken, again, who are you to decide that?!?! Do you have a journalism degree from Maryland, Syracuse, Missouri or Kansas? Are you published?

THIS IS YOUR OPINION! Just like it was the opinion of Mo Scott to call out Liddell III. Does anyone ever read Rick Reilly or Peter King and not go, "well, I really like Tiger Woods, and the fact you said he is struggling following surgery is really pissing me off?" Probably not, because many educated readers will sit back and go, "well, maybe he's right, but Tiger has been missing some easy putts." Calm down. Tommie Liddell isn't going to knock on your door and thank you for your support.

The Post-Dispatch would never run an article critical of Tommie Liddell III, even though there is substantial and physical evidence of his performance peaking midway through his freshman year. I applaud the St. Louis American; not only is their Bill Cosby tough love stance for fellow blacks a positive thing, Mo Scott has earned himself at least one more avid follower.

I'm a journalist and that was a terrible column - names spelled wrong, grammar errors, etc.

  3. If it is true that TL dropped out of school, I doubt it had anything to do with Majerus. TL was done with Majerus, so if he really had a problem with the coach it would not have mattered because he wouldn't have to deal with him anymore.

Yeah, blaming the coach for TL dropping out of school at this point doesn't make any sense to me. He didn't have to deal with Majerus anymore.

  4. I agree, Nashville, but this is a young team regardless. Don't you think that Majerus knows he's got to work with what he's got? Why not play Brett Thompson? This is unacceptable. You sign a recruit to play basketball, not be a cheerleader. Let's get that squared away right now. Brett Thompson is a good basketball player that needs to develop some confidence against quicker, more athletic teams. We know that. Thompson isn't going to wake up one day being the second coming of Handsboro. He's got to clock in and go to work when coach calls his number. No one goes to work at Boeing and goes to the R&D department and says, "I've been here a couple of months. I'm ready to build you an airplane," but you're expected to contribute to the good of the company. If Thompson rides the pine against all athletic teams in the A-10, why not ask for a transfer.

So you say just play him even if it puts the team at a disadvantage. Makes perfect sense. I'm sure Kevin and Tommie would love that approach. You should be the coach.

  5. The refs from the game:

    Dwayne Gladden

    Craig Boroski

    Terry WYmer

    SIU-SLU Stat Sheet

None of these guys were MVC or A10 refs...

Dwayne Gladden has done significantly more A10 games however.

Stop crying no refs in the world would have helped win that game.

I agree that the Bills would not have won if the refs were different. The Bills played a bad game and didn't deserve to win. But with that said, the handchecking by the Carbondale was out of control. There is no reason to let that go. My dad and I were at the game and he was a high school and college ref for 20-plus years. He NEVER complains about officiating since he knows the demands. He always gives the refs the benefit of the doubt, but he even said that there was no reason to let that stuff go. That meant more to me than anything said on this board. That game was brutal to watch. The Salukis had their hands all over the Bills as soon as they crossed half court.

  6. 17th Street Bar and Grill was voted best ribs in the US by both The Food Network and The Travel Channel in the last year. The original Murphysboro location is where it is at although the new O'Fallon location is still good, it is not quite the same. Anyone who is going to SI for the game cannot go wrong by going there for a pregame dinner. I recomend the pulled pork as well and you have to try the deep fried pickle slices. They are awesome.

You guys have me sold. I'm going. Thanks for the tip.

  7. There are enough slow sports days to give the preps their dues, but is it possible that they are part of the reason SLU is getting treated like a second-class citizen?

I used to work for the Journals here in town and we always criticized the lack of prep coverage in the Post. But I do think it is much, much better than in the past. They usually have at least a couple pages of full coverage in the weekend sections. I still think there has to be enough room to have a SLU preview, though. As I wrote to Hollway, I don't understand whey we have about a half page dedicated to a Women's College Basketball Notebook in the paper today over a SLU preview - no offense to women's college basketball. But how does that get priority over SLU - his response to that:

The Women's Final Four is in St. Louis this year, so we'll be beefing up that coverage throughout the season.

  8. Is that REALLY the response you got from him?

I copied and pasted it right into this post. I got the same feeling as you, being talked down to a bit. I know a little about journalism and it is supposed to be unbiased - this doesn't seem like an unbiased slant. My other problem is SLU had over 9,000 at the game Saturday, so that proves right there the interest in the game. I love all the expanded high school coverage (one thing I think they are doing right), but I'm guessing not a single high school game in the area drew 9,000 fans Saturday. Just a hunch.

  9. FYI- here is a reply I got from Hollway today:

In last Wednesday's paper, we advanced the big early-season tests that SLU has on its sked, including BC (which actually isn't a very good team, so if that's the toughest nonconference game, that's pretty weak. I'd say playing at SIUC will be more of a test.). Anyway, we foresaw a very busy weekend in which we'd have a hard time getting the BC advance in the Saturday paper, and so we went with a theme angle on Wednesday, for the Kent State and BC advances combined. That doesn't signal a change in philosophy, just that we had too much going on to fit into that section (we did advance SLU volleyball and cover SLU soccer in that paper). ... So, it's too early to say that we won't preview SLU games. A non-conference game at Nebraska? No. ... We're in the crossover schedule, when we have football and basketball going on, and so we have really tight sections.

  10. Brian, I normally like and agree with many of your posts. But I think you are way off here. I think the fans that have casual interest in the program and went to a handful of games because the tickets were reasonable are the exact fan SLU should be trying to attract.

That was me. I have no affliation with the school whatsoever. I like college basketball and enjoy following SLU. I got season tickets with my dad a few years back because I could get them for a great, cheap price. I was on the fence about this year because tickets were more than triple what I was paying for one of my two season tickets. I decided to keep them because of the new building. Do you really want to drive away fans like my dad and I? If so, why? SLU needs new fans. Winning will do it, but cheaper tickets doesn't hurt by any means. We need to create a buzz and getting people in that building for a game like today would certainly help.

  11. Bottom line is cheaper tickets might get more people in the building, more people excited about the program, and may raise freshmen enrollment.

Great post. I totally agree. They need to get some excitement going for this program. And charging a guy that isn't a die hard fan $25 for a cheap seat in our building is asking too much. You are not going to get many newcomers aboard with that gameplan. Heck, I have trouble justifying myself spending $450 for season tickets - just ask my wife

  12. Game wasn't very good to watch. But to quote the great Tommy Boy, "I have seen some things in my day, but that halftime show was awesome." The guy next to me summed it up well - words won't do justice to what we just saw when we go to describe it to someone tomorrow. I really think that was the highlight of the night. Basketball was not great.

  13. my question is if the early arrivers got to actually view the last half an hour of practice or were the curtains closed and the fandom had to wait until 6:30 for the players to join them?

You could not view practice and they didn't have beer - much to coach's dismay. But the event was nice besides that. There wasn't a huge turnout - as you could guess - publicized too late.

Here is what when down. You got to eat a brat and get a drink first. The players then sat for autographs - had a poster schedule there, which was nice. After that, coach and the players sat down on the floor in the Fetz. Coach rambled on for a few minutes before leaving to talk to a recruit. The players introduced themselves and took questions. Question of the night - how will you guys replace Bryce Husak's speed and athleticism? That got a good rise out of everyone. After the players spoke, Majerus returned and took questions. As you can guess, he rambled on for a while but I thought he was entertaining. I don't think we learned much new from the event - he just said to stay patient and he is building this thing for the future. He can see really good things in another year or two. This year could be up and down with so many freshman getting their feet wet. He is adding four or even five recruits for next year. I'm sure I missed a lot, but that is a quick synopsis.

  14. Well there you go, that confirms ours are priced correctly at around $25. per game.

SLUs season tix are overpriced. I'm kind of kicking myself a bit because I could have gotten Blues season tickets for $500 when they were running that promotion for name your price. That is 42 games and they weren't on the ends. Upper deck in the second row. Oh well. I just think SLU needed to make some noise before charging people so much for tickets. I go from paying like $200 for the season to $450 and I also joined the Billiken Club to get better priority for seats - nice chunk of change for a horrific schedule. And I realize the new arena has a lot to do with it, but just saying.....

  15. isnt it unbelieveable. especially since nate assured us earlier this year that daniel wasnt good enough to be on the all metro team and definitely not good enough to be on a division one roster with a scholarship. good for daniel.

while it is just for a year, the difference between this and what mitchell and relephorde got is that they were never told up front this is only a one year deal. assuming daniel redshirts, he still will have a four year career elsewhere on his terms.

Not sure why you are trying to throw Nate under the bus here. From everything I heard, Lisch was headed to D-III Fontbonne, which is far from a D-I school. So I wouldn't think he was getting a whole lot of looks, especially from D-I schools. Am I happy to see him on board at SLU? Sure, but the mudslinging isn't needed here.
