  1. I truly fear that the Bills have been completely exposed by the defense LaSalle put on us last week and in reflecting upon their strategy, can't believe no one else had tried to do the same thing before that. Hound our only two consistent shooters, pack the middle to stop IV and limit TL's penetration, and our offense is essentially contained. They'll let TL, DP, LM, VN, JJ, or IV shoot all day from the outside. Anyone else worried that we can expect a clone of that defense from here on out? Any ideas on what we can do to combat such a strategy?

  2. Easy there, skip, I wasn't trying to take a shot at you. You said for longer stretches and I said I'm not so sure about that. Now that you've said not longer stretches, but just a little more often, I'll agree. The stretch we did vs. UNCC was quite long enough, but if effective, could be useful more often.

  3. I agree that this was the coaching move of the year for Brad but I'm not convinced that it's definitely the way to go every game for long stretches. Remember, there was a game in which DB scored 23, that doesn't mean he should be our go-to guy when we need scoring. I do agree that against certain lineups or a couple of times a game it would be nice to see us try to pose the matchup problems on the opponent and see if we can get some quick scores on the interior. Then, if it continues to work, we can try it more and more. I was one that really wanted to see us try it and was happy to see us do so, but I'm not sold on it after one game. We'll need more than a one-game sample to fully evaluate it.

  4. At 16-10, winning our last two and then two more will get us to the "magical" 20 win plateau. 20-11 teams get talked about as far as getting into the tournament, particularly if they are second in their conference and only one other team from that conference is in. Everyone that is arguing we won't be in the conversation if we win 4 more is kidding themselves. No one is saying we would definitely get in with that scenario, but we will certainly be in the conversation.

  5. The AD thread mentioned Senior Night a few times and I was jsut wondering if we're doing anything particularly special for this year's event. I don't really remember us making too much of a production in the past, but I thought I'd see if anyone knew what our plans were. Blue Crew, anything special planned on your end this year?

  6. >Great season Liddell and Lisch from a Tiger, Bills and Blue

    >devil fan.

You root for another team other than the Billikens?! That's impossible! You aren't a "true" Billikens fan!

    >Just wondering what would happen if I posted stuff from the

    >Tiger board. Since I don't read that board and I am a bills

    >fan, I guess we will never know.

Well right now SLU's program is better than Mizzou's, so posting a thread that they wish they wouldn't have missed on KL would be sort of a "duh" statement. Back when they were #2 in the country, people here would likely have taken it as a compliment from a better program.

    >Go back to degrading Native Americans and stay off the

    >Billiken Board.

We've had this argument before. Must we rehash it? We clearly don't agree on the issue.

I will credit you on the consistency of your posts. Each time it gets more and more ridiculous. I always think, "He can't possibly have something more inane or illogical to say." And I'm consistently proven wrong. Bravo.

  7. Well this thread degenerated into exactly what I was afraid of. What difference does it make that I found the info on the Illiniboard? The point of the post was that the #8 team in the country (that went to last year's Nat'l Title Game) is wishing they had a player from SLU. It's not often that a program at that level is wishing they had a player that SLU has, especially this early in the player's career. Why don't you read the post for what it was and not make this an issue about Illinois, which is not at all what the post was about?

Also, if you don't care about what Illinois fans think (which is a perfectly valid opinion), then don't post in the thread! There are a myriad of threads here that I could not care less about and you'll know which ones they are by my lack of posts. The fact that you posted multiple times in this thread indicates to me that you do care about it.

  8. I'm sure I will catch some flack for posting this from my favorite trio of posters, but I'll deal with it.

Thought it was interesting that there's a thread today on the IlliniBoard about how much the Illini fans wish they had Kevin Lisch on their squard. Nice praise for Kevin from a successful program like that! And it isn't all that often that SLU has guys (particularly freshman) that make bigger programs jealous like that. Let's be thankful he chose the Billikens, though!

  9. >Yes he is their best player, but he is only one guy, so

    >saying we shouldn't press because their best player is a

    >guard I think may be missing a great opportunity here.

Makes sense to me. However, we'll have to employ some sort of trapping scheme rather than just extend our man-to-man defense the length of the court. KL and DP are good on ball defenders, but Collins will just clear out that side of the court and bring it up himself. The reason I bring this up is that we haven't done any sort of trapping press that I can remember so I wonder how likely you think it is that we'll employ that style.

    >If we are content to not pressure and methodically bring the

    >ball up the floor against this defense, we could get

    >smothered. I am not syaing we don't have the talent to beat

    >Temple, but our guys have not seen a zone like this.

It still rankles that we walk the ball up the floor every time. I would love to see more energy bringing the ball up and at least exploring fast break or, more likely, secondary break points. KL seems more comfortable every day with catching the ball in transition and popping a quick jumper. Anything we can do to continue to up his confidence and have him being the player taking the open jumpers is key. Pushing the ball a bit might also make for a few easier penetration opportunities for TL since the defender won't have time to sit back in the lane and just play the drive.

    >If they do get set-up Tommie needs to be driving and dishing

    >and we need to be hitting or we may literally end up with 35

    >points.

I made a similar point in my initial post that TL's penetration is key. It seems obvious to say that, but with each passing game it becomes clear how important he is to the success of this team.

Final note on TL (and I knocked on wood after typing this):

It's pretty amazing how little foul trouble he gets into given the amount of time he spends trying to rebound in amongst the trees (and he's damn successful at it, too). He also usually guards someone taller than him. The discipline he has shown in this regard (other than the game he got the T) says a lot for his basketball IQ.

  10. Just thinking about what we need to do to successfully attack the Owls.....

    1. I think LM, VN, and JJ could be a huge part of our success as their ability to hit mid-range jumpers could be huge if they can find the "soft" spots in the zone.

    2. TL may be the real key to this game as he is the one person who is a threat to attack the zone with consistent penetration. Hopefully he can do this and draw the zone into overloaded situations and hit an open man.

    3. For TL to be able to do this, we probably need to come out hitting from the outside to make them honor the trey. KL and AD, need to be on. Maybe this can come from an early couple of drive and kicks from TL.

    4. IV needs to be the IV of last night. Stay aggressive and get on the offensive glass.

Given our inconsistency on offense and propensity for having long scoring droughts, this game has me worried with their unusual defensive style. I mention the above points b/c it's crucial for us not to settle for chucking treys late in the shot clock just b/c they are in a strange defense. Exploring some easier scoring options is essential to help keep momentum.

    As for our defense....

    1. I know Mardy Collins is very well regarded. Is this a job for KL to hound him?

    2. Anyone else of serious concern for us to guard?

  11. We seem to be slow to throw the entry pass as well. We often stare him down, pump a couple of times, and then finally find an angle to get him the ball. By this time, the defender has fully established position and pushed him off the block. Hence, he ends up with the ball 10-12 feet out instead of 3-5. I'd like to see up improve the ball movement across the perimeter so that we can be in position to immediately throw that entry pass while the defense is still reacting.

Caveat is, of course, the defense will have less distance to cover in its reaction since we have no threat on the opposing block and few threats from the outside.

  12. I watched the Dayton game there last Saturday...but I don't know who most of you all are. Anyway, my question is, the KU fans seemed very well organized there. Why the strong contingent of Jayhawk fans and are the Billikens fans an organized group there? Seems more like loose affiliation to me but then again I was a couple of tables behind everyone.

  13. I see your point but everyone here is frustrated with what seems to be a better team than takes the floor each night. And there are legitimate ways we might have been better off at this point. I don't see any harm in hashing out everyone's thoughts on where to get better. Unless you are #1 in the country, there's no time to stop and smell the roses. In fact, you probably can't even do it then. Constant improvement is vital.

  14. >The other point he made about Tommie and Dwayne being in the

    >game at the same time is other teams immediately get in a

    >zone because they know neither one of these players are good

    >outside shooters, and he feels that really stiffles the team

    >in their half court offense.

Correct. I forgot to mention that angle. This stifles both DP and TL's penetration game (which is the extent of their offensive skills right now outside of TL's offensive rebounding). It also hurts IV's room to maneuver. I think we all knew that but it was a good refresher on why we don't see our best "up-tempo" five on the floor together very often. It stifles the half-court and that's where most baskets come from.

    Any other thoughts?

  15. I think that's a great idea and have endorsed it on this forum in the past. I'm not convinced it will work but I would love to see the possibility explored. I imagine a great high post offensive set with those two passing to each other.
