  1. If SLU would have been allowed by John Cook and his tanning bed to make a run in the tournament the next year, the CBI might have taken off. The following season VCU went to the final four. If the other championship participant went to 32/16/8 rounds, there'd be a damn good argument for participation.

John Cook and his tanning bed? I think you have the narrative mixed up there...

  2. Agree and some big time programs in there this year. Minority here to. Seems most on here can over look any and everything.

I have great memories from our NIT runs in the late 80s. Of course I would prefer the NCAA tourney, but an NIT bid, especially with a strong performance in it, is definitely a good thing. Those who diss the NIT seem to me to just be full of bravado, not substance.

  3. I disagree on that. Most of those tournaments have only a couple hundred people in attendance. The problem is we aren't a national brand that anyone cares to watch on espn.

I think you are spot on. Those tournaments are like watching gym class as empty as the gyms are.

  4. No **** that everyone that posted a record prediction ended up being wrong about this season. Nobody saw this awfulness coming. Without bothering to go back and look, my recollection was that SLU72 was closest with his 14 win prediction. If there was one lower then congratulations to him/her.

Taj, did you actually have a numerical prediction of our record? I don't recall it if you did. If you did my sincerest apologies and please post a link to it. Thanks, and I can't wait for your response.

Consider that with all that thrashing that anyone who was skeptical about a winning season received and I think you can quickly deduce why there were minimal challenges to the general winning season narrative.

  5. Good to hear on the frosh. I don't know if all of them will pan out and I don't know if I want 6 guys graduating in one class, but if they suck, let them leave after next year. I don't think we'll be playing a 12 man rotation next year anyway so we won't have to give valuable minutes to guys if they still can't play. I too heard that the core group is pissed. I've been saying it, but if we can get all the guys to follow 2 or 3 guys in particular in terms of their dedication and desire, we can be a decent team at least next year.

Also good to hear on the recruiting front. Get the guys now and don't end up with the last of the leftovers in May.

Just for clarification sake, "pissed" at whom or about what exactly?

  6. I have read more nonsense on this board in recent weeks than I have in a long time. I have read ridiculous things like we have no plan or strategy, we don't recruit, Crews can't coach, we are light years behind Dayton's program, we have no talent, etc. It is a bunch of nonsense.

Unless your name is Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, or North Carolina, college basketball is a game of recruiting cycles. A few years ago IU was everyone's top team, this year they were thrilled to be in the tournament. In recent years, a lot of top teams haven't made the tournament or have been in the tournament but haven't won games. This includes programs like UCLA, Iowa, Oklahoma State, UNLV, and Utah. Dayton was awful for years before last year. Where is Mizzou, Marquette, Illinois, etc.? Gonzaga and Xavier are extreme outliers, not the norm.

Getting in the tournament and winning a game isn't easy. It is a difficult process that can start with a 5-win season followed by a 12-win season (1991-1993) or a 12-win season (2010-11). This year, we have a core group or talented freshmen who needed experience, coaching, and strength and fitness training. I watched every game from the 90s team and every game from the Majerus' team. This year's group of freshmen is similar and, in many ways, better. All the people trashing Gillmann don't understand basketball; you don't find kids his size with his hands and coordination. Bartley has a combo of handles, shot, and height we have rarely had at a guard. Roby is the kind-of doing everything athlete we always complain about not having on our roster. Milk can flat out play; did anyone else notice his game fell off when he lost his legs? Reggie and Crawford showed us a lot last month.

Like everyone on this board, I hoped for more this year. However, I remember running into a very connected poster on this board a few weeks before the season. He had seen the team practice multiple times and had spent time with those close to the team. His comment was that the kids have a ton of talent but little clue. He said it was going to be a rough year and we would be lucky to finish .500; he also said this group should provide the long-term core to get us back to the tournament and beyond. Everything he said six months ago still rings true.

Oh yeah, I am guessing Crews still knows a little bit about coaching and recruiting.

Very well put...even for a junior Bill. ?

  7. How so? Kmbilliken started the debate then alumni fan made a quick comment that the whole team should transfer if they want to make the tournament. Maybe my assessment on 5th year desires are incorrect, but that doesn't make me a tool. I don't think I am wrong in that our team needs to prove itself

My reaction was an over-reaction to the ongoing over-reaction of how bad the Billikens were and (according to some) will be next year. The 5th year senior debate is fine, but I do think there are very, very limited situations in which it would work out for the reasons I stated.

  8. No, but next year is a long shot. A fifth year senior would only be here for one year. Do you think a fifth year transfer is going to look at this years record and what we have returning and think "SLU looks like they're going to the tournament next year, I'll go there"?

So does that mean that Austin McBroom will likely end up on a tourney team? A lot of people here say he isn't good enough for what people are calling the worst team (SLU) in a down conference (A10) which has a bleak out look for 2015-2016, yet he is going to a tourney bound team because, as a 5th year senior, to them he will be a great addition? What am I missing? Seriously. Maybe the rule is not 100% clear to me.

But more importantly is the very frequent assumption that next year SLU will suck. Maybe we will, but it is just getting old to hear so many people automatically assume that next year is a loss. And then, when a person posts positive things about the team, some people become angry and, at times, downright childish about it. Now I know what Jerry Seinfeld felt like in the Bizzarro World episode.

I apologize if I misunderstood your post, but so many comments now are either outright negative or dripping with sarcasm that it is difficult to tell.

  9. If there are, why would they come here? 5th year transfers usually want a shot at the tournament. There not going to see that here.

Assuming all players want a shot at the tourney, I guess the entire team should go elsewhere... Ugh. This is getting old.

  10. Jolly has the body type and the intensity to be a Conklinesque enforcer. Gilllllmannnnn is more of a Rob Loe type. They're young and they generally played like freshmen and complement each other well. If there was one thing I would like to see them improve on is for Jolly not to rush his shots and passes and for Gillllmannnn to do the exact opposite.

  11. Yes terrible I idea to have your best player (one of the best in the country) take your final shot.

I think the point is that when that becomes your only option and the opposition is fully aware of it, it decreases the statistical likelihood of a successful outcome at the end of a one basket game versus a situation in which there are multiple end of game scoring options. It's really just math.

  12. I don't think I get what you're saying? If it's all about basketball, then why wouldn't he leave for more playing time elsewhere?

But I do agree, I don't think he leaves. I used to think him and Jolly were gone, but I am starting to really doubt that.

Just that, as a sophomore at SLU, it would seem he has a high likelihood of playing time at SLU (especially with AM's departure) whereas going somewhere else significantly increases the uncertainty around his playing time. That's really all I was saying. The other related point is that I don't think money is an issue for his family at all so it's all about bball.

  13. I've heard Jolly and Reynolds, but before you go bashing me I don't have any official sources. Just hear-say around campus.

From what I have heard, Reynolds is here because he wants to play basketball, not because he needs scholarship money. I cannot imagine him going to a lot of places where he has a high likelihood of more playing time unless he drops down to another level.

  14. How many years of rebuilding is Crews entitled to? He belongs to easily the most entitled generation in American history. Today's college students are the ones who will be forced to pay the note for that entitlement. At some point it's got to be time to shift the "accountability" talk away from the kids playing for a free education and back to the coach who brought them here in the first place. I'll be anxious to see whether everyone's attitude changes if there is not significant improvement next year.

    Ugh....

  15. If Tatum can't lead his high school team with all those D1 prospects to the championship game, how can some of you expect him to lead SLU to the NCAA Tournament?

To be clear, I think Tatum is an incredible talent and I really want to see him in Billiken blue. That said, you bring up an interesting point.

  16. Althoff just beat two-time defending state champ Morgan Park to advance to the Illinois Class 3A state title game. Those kids from Althoff can really play. I'd love to see Gooch and/or Goodwin (2017) in a Billiken uniform.

+1. I think Goodwin was an assist short of a triple double. I think we recruited some kid from Althoff awhile back, Lisch or something like that.

  17. The only other guys people on here seem to want to see transfer are Jolly and Yacoubou. Given Jolly's tweets and Crews' comments on Yacoubou, it sounds like both of them will stay. So any more transfers would probably be very bad news.

I haven't heard anyone talk about wanting Ash to transfer. He definitely has the skills. Personally, I would prefer they both stay.
