VCU forward Mo Alie-Cox has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery after an incident with a woman, according to documents obtained by WTVR CBS 6 in Richmond.
"We are aware of the charge against Mo Alie-Cox, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely," said VCU athletic director Ed McLaughlin. "We will allow the legal process to run its course and act appropriately within our VCU Athletics Student-Athlete Code of Conduct as more details become clear."
The incident reportedly happened on April 3 -- the same night Shaka Smart told his players he was leaving VCU for Texas. According to WTVR, here are the alleged details:
The woman said it began when she walked by a group of men and another woman at Society in Shockoe Slip. The other woman, she said, told her not to look in her direction.
“I said I could look wherever I pleased, and she responded with a comment I did not here [sic] and got in my face," the complainant wrote in the court document. "A VCU basketball player made a comment with me responding, 'It's not my fault Shaka Smart left. Is that why your [sic] mad?'"
After the Shaka Smart comment was made, the complainant said the other woman shoved her. The complainant said she then accidentally grabbed the other woman's hair. That is when Alie-Cox allegedly entered the picture, the woman said.
"Mo Alie-Cox punched me in the face,” she wrote in the criminal complaint. "I went to the bouncer to ask for help and Mo Alie-Cox left."
The woman said when she later approached Alie-Cox about the incident, he denied touching her. The woman then filed the criminal report.
Cox averaged 7.5 points and 5.7 rebounds this past season.
He is due back in court May 20.

I mentioned in another thread that I had met the parent of a current VCU player. One of the things we talked about was Allie-Cox. I had mentioned that I thought he was a beast and had a lot of upside. It surprised me when he told me that Allie-Cox was actually a very quiet, almost shy person. So, when I read the above I tend to think that this is a typical story where one party is embellishing the facts to fit their own narrative. I obviously do not know him personally, but based on this parent's comments, I call BS on the girl's story.

  2. Perhaps I am not explaining well enough, it does not appear that I got my point across.

There is no ideal comparison, we cannot correct for human variables in real life. It just struck me watching the Warrior- Pelican game that Steph Curry is a great example of a player who achieved without going to a Blue Blood school. It also happens that he has a similar sized brother who happened to go to Duke for 4 years (played 3).

One argument that people keep making is that if Tatum chooses to go to Duke he will be better off because he will practice against better talent. Another way to say it, Playing on a team with a higher talent level will make you a better player. I do not think that is true. Steph Curry did not have that opportunity, but his brother did. Seth transferred to Duke and I believe played three years there. Despite the opportunity to practice against better talent, he did not become a better player than his brother. Why because his brother is phenomenal, his brother has an amazing work ethic, his brother got to be the leader of his team in college and take them on a phenomenal run in the NCAA tourney. Seth perhaps might have done better by staying at a small school and playing more, and learning to be a point guard.

But back to the premise that practicing at Duke is a much better option for JT because his game will improve much more than if he went to SLU and practiced against our current Freshman and sophomores. IF this is absolutely true, and the most important thing for a player, then that should also apply to players like the Curry brothers. Since we do not have identical twins the comparison is not perfect, but these are two similar players, arguably the same 6-3 guards. Both initially shooting guards, both good 3 point shooters in college. Seth played against high level talent, practice in, practice out, was not a slouch, yet has barely sniffed the NBA. Steph played three years at Davidson, stayed his last year in order to learn to be a better PG which he viewed his future NBA position. Drafted by the Warriors and has achieved.

My point is that Steph Curry achieved without playing against the best talent, if playing at Duke against high level talent is good, then playing at Davidson should have been a detriment, but is was not. Why? If going to Duke and practicing against better talent automatically makes one better, then one might have expected his brother to have a better career. He has not. Why? underlying talent level, probably. However one could argue that going to Davidson and playing 30-35 minutes per game might actually have helped him the most. Learning through actual competitive game minutes might be more important than practicing against better talent. Being the guy with the ball and the game on the line over and over again is important too.

It appears that JT has the talent, if he has the work ethic, who he practices against will not have a long lasting positive or negative effect on his overall career. Amount of playing time, work ethic may be more important than who one practices against. There clear as mud.

While a lot of people are going to look only for potential faults in your argument to support their own narrative (while also ignoring the valid points) I think your points are interesting if not compelling.

It strikes me as odd that some supposed Billiken fans have spent so much energy arguing why JT should not go to SLU. I do not understand their motivations unless they just have a personal need to be proven right.

Either way, hopefully, JT makes his choice soon to be a Billiken for all the reasons that ate right for him!

  3. That must have been a really interesting conversation.

Kathy Lisch used to walk around the neighborhood with a Rosary, actually saying the Rosary. She is very religious and very devout and also a wonderful person. She was probably more devout than some Jesuits. Not sure about Kevin as he was just a kid back then.

  4. They don't typically hold rallies for recruits. Rather they bring recruits in during things like football games, midnight madness, big games against rivals etc. the students are already assembled and it doesn't take much for them to start a chant or orchestrate something for the recruit to "show the love"

I think this is exactly correct. SLU students had several opportunities to impress Tatum when he attended games this past season. I think Jayson Tatum is intelligent enough to understand that a choice to attend SLU is more about his future in his hometown after his NBA career than it is about one season in college. If he comes to SLU and leads the Billikens back to the tournament, maybe even with a deep run, he will be St. Louis royalty. However, if he doesn't plan to spend much time in St. Louis after his career, then I doubt he is even really considering SLU.

  5. I'm not a trademark expert, but with their state registration they secured exclusive use rights in Virginia and nowhere else. Generally speaking, registering a trademark at the state level only protects you in that state. Registering at the fed level gives you national protection.

I'm sure there's caselaw to support some notion of national use, prior notice in the marketplace, etc, for VCU's state registered mark, but they really put themselves in a bad position to secure exclusive use on a national level.

VCU has no one to blame but their legal counsel. I find it incredibly egregious that counsel for VCU only filed at the state level.

I am not a trademark expert either, but this is exactly what happened to us. Our counsel advised us to secure only a state mark. When one of our competitors decided to enter our market, our state mark held up, but it was made very clear that despite the fact that we clearly had evidence of first use, we could not use the mark beyond Missouri and Illinois. And, even then, there was dispute as to whether or not we could use the mark in Chicago because we had not used it there.

I am really surprised that an entity as large and presumably sophisticated as VCU made this common mistake.

  6. Actually, there's some truth to that. When I moved to Georgia, I actually got more access to Mizzou games than when I lived in Missouri. I don't have access to CBSSports on my cable package, so getting SLU games would be hard. Yes, I could have reviewed ESPN recruiting websites on SLU, but didn't take the time to do that. My access to St. Louis sports consists of STLToday and you know that means a lot of Mizzou news and limited news on SLU. Admittedly, watching SLU and Mizzou basketball games was a difficult exercise as both had trouble putting the ball in the basket. However, there's always a new year. If I can survive Ekker basketball, then I can survive one blip of basketball this season.

Then I get reminded of the small-minded of people on this board, so my trips here have been sporadic over the years. Admittedly, it's not much better on Tigerboard either. It's the culture today.

Good to hear from you aj - always enjoyed our past debates.

Interesting that you heard this "fab five" talk on the Mizzou board. I seriously doubt that there is a any likelihood of this happening as many others have stated, but it is an interesting topic. I just wonder where this idea really originally came from. Idle speculation is easy to start, especially on these internet boards, but sometimes there is some basis in fact however distorted it may be.

I would ignore the intolerant jerks on this board. Most of the people are pretty good, but there are some who are very myopic and always spoiling for a fight. You know I hate Mizzou, but I subscribe to the philosophy of hate the sin, love the sinner, so I can hate Mizzou, but still get along with (reasonable) Mizzou fans.

  7. Man, no matter how many nice things there are to say about Shaka (and I'll be honest, I struggle to find things I don't like about him), people here find a way to dump on him. This is a great story and some of the comments after are still bafflingly negative. SLU should be so lucky to have him as HC.

He'll do fine at Texas. I hope the greater pressure doesn't change him. I wish him the best. His departure is bad news for the A10.

Agreed. It is a big loss for the A10. I think he was a good role model for the kids too, but he will have that opportunity at Texas and on a bigger stage.

  8. Just because Tatum goes to a blue blood doesn't mean he will make the final four. Duke got bounced with Jabari and Wiggins didn't accomplish much at Kansas. This doesn't mean SLU is the best chance, but nothing is a guarantee and none of us know what his desires are until he announces.

All true, but we can always dream! :D

  9. OK, Smart gets a big high five because he did not break the rules? Sorry, I don't think we should be patting him on the back. I know others cheat but that does not make those who don't some kind of saint.

Who pisses in your corn flakes EVERY morning? Are you ever positive? No one is proposing beatification; it was a simple comment about a situation which, at some big BCS schools like Texas, may prove to have different outcomes. Obviously, you do not have an opinion on the question I raised which is perfectly fine, but what motivates you to make such a sarcastic, cynical comment? I have to admit though, when I see someone like you, I always feel thankful that I don't go through life seeing the negative in everyone and everything. Serious suggestion: Try to think of a positive, noncynical comment next time you reply to someone. Try it, just a few times. I will bet you will feel better. Good luck.

  10. I recently met the father of one of VCU's players. Very nice guy. He knew Shaka and told me a story about how Shaka was recruiting a player who, of course, was being recruited by another team. The player's father came to Shaka and said, "Well, XYZ University offered us $xx,xxx, what will you offer?" Shaka told him that he was done recruiting his son. According to this guy, who I believe, Shaka didn't play that game at VCU (which I admire).

So, what does that mean for coaching and recruiting at a school like Texas?

  11. i'm sorry for your relationship. she's gonna be pissed when she finds out about you, emily ratajkowski, and the internet. that girl's online portfolio is PRODIGIOUS. and lascivious. snoooobviously.

i went with pike, though, cuz i'm into classy broads. but i'd say that as far as T & A goes, ratfink is hotter.

So what you're saying is you get rejected alot... :D

  12. Let me clarify my position further. Nice people don't always make good coaches. I like Crews. I always have. But I'm just not sure he is the guy able to get us to the next level. I really don't know.

The mediocrity comment was directed moreso to the notion that Porter Moser should be considered in the running for our next coach. There are more than a few people who think that is a distinct possibility.

BUT, I do think there MAY be somewhat of a disconnect between what SOME season ticket holders/donors think is needed to raise the profile of the program and what it actually takes.

You could poll season ticket holders from ANY school and of course they would say that they aspire to be better than mediocre.

Those are fair statements and I agree.

  13. I will never understand our fanbase's acquiescence to mediocrity. Nice, likeable, respectable, morally sound, engaging individuals can, in fact, be mediocre at coaching. We fired Soderberg after a 20 win season (his best) because, as a program and school, we decided mediocrity wasn't acceptable anymore. In my opinion, the jury is still out with Crews...but his track record isn't too encouraging. The question is, would Moser, or any potential coach for that matter, be someone who could lead us out of mediocrity?

Take a poll of all season ticketholders. Ask them each, "Are you okay with the Billikens being a mediocre program?" If you can find even 10% that say that I will write you a big check. You and I both know I don't even need to find my checkbook. People who like Crews as coach don't like him because they want the program to be mediocre; they like him as coach because they think he can get the job done and lead us to high performance including the tournament. You may disagree with the belief that Crews can do that, but please quit implying that someone who likes Jim Crews as coach of the Billikens wants a mediocre program or acquiesces to mediocrity. That is simply not true and it gets frustrating to hear people imply that, in different ways, over and over.
