  1. I thought Earl would know and ran across this article. William would have made a great addition to that 73 Billiken team. I remember watching a Billiken game, I believe in 1973 at the Kiel against Memphis. I had great seats behind the Billiken bench. SLU built about a 20 point half time lead. Larry Finch almost brought Memphis back in the second half but SLU hung on for victory. I'm positive that team had Rogers, Martinez, Leonard, Paradoski, and I can not remember the 5th starter. Must be getting old. Hope this link works.

I just remembered it was a player named Stallworth.

  2. I should know, but have forgotten. The FR I recall with Harry are The Ghost and Paradoski.

  3. Brent was legit 7 footer, 7'4 with his huge afro. Not quite the player Gilmore was. He left Jacksonville after his sophomore year. Chose to sign with the ABA rather than wait for the NBA draft. I don't think he ever played in a game.

That 69 Sumner high team is generally regarded as the best team in STL history. Rogers and Brent anchoring the frontline. Both Marshall Rogers, who would lead the NCAA in scoring at UT Pan Am, and William Westfall, who started on the 73 Memphis St final four team, came off the BENCH.

Torch - wasn't James Brown who also played for SLU on that team also. Very well said about Easy Ed.

  4. Creighton fans are peeved at how physical Seton Hall was. Bet they'd love to see some Billiken D.

Billikens play great defense. Not so sure what Seton Hall was playing was great Defense. Seton Hall had huge players and they used that size to their advantage. They sort of reminded me of Saluki teams who would see how much physical play they could get by with. Their backup point guard played a great game though. My dream game is Creighton and SLU in the championship of the NCAA. Three overtimes with Jordair Jett scoring on his one of his patented drives overcoming Doug McDermott's 55 points. Nice to dream. :)

  5. Jordair reminds me of Bob Gibson when he was on the mound. All business, competitive, wants the ball in tough situations. I like Billiken Rich's comment " hits the winning shot and then gets in line to shake hands rather than thumping his chest and making a spectacle of himself". Gibson sets the record for strikeouts in the 68 series, McCarver comes out to tell him and gets yelled at to get back behind the plate. Regardless of the final outcome of this Billikens season, I will always remember like I do for Gibson's 1.12 era, 15 game winning streak, and those 17 strikeouts, not for the final game of the 68 season. For a almost 50 year Billiken fan it doesn't get any better than this.

  6. I really enjoyed reading these posts about Charlie Ries. It sure brought back memories. Perhaps someone could verify something for me. I attended that great Notre Dame game in 1970-71. But the Freshman were playing when I arrived at the arena. I am almost certain they beat the Missouri Freshman team that night and I remember Ries and Dangos playing in that game and having very good nights but I only saw the end of the game. Also I hadn't realized that Versace was an assistant. I do remember some of the players that came in right before I left for the service. I believe some of the names were Vallott, Nance, and Eric Jones. I think they were all Chicago players.

  7. we sure have had some wonderful one and done slu players over the years. taj loves to talk about donnie atkins. best midnight madness performance every never to see the floor.

i also remember the memorable midnight madness first impression where jj haliburton led the team onto the floor with a couple of flips remindful of ozzie smith opening day events. jj's feet never left the floor much after that though either and was gone the next season.

junie jeffries was a spoon bench warmer for a couple of years. career ppg 0.9. this was during a time we were starved for inside play as well and my memory says he was about 6'8" or thereabouts.

box in won's favorite was obi "i ate my sister" ikeakor. i say soderberg's biggest failed recruit ever. that guy just kept getting bigger and bigger and worse and worse.

who can forget andrew latimer from the romar days? just horrible and really had me gunshy about australia for years. not until cody proved australia really has nice players too did i recover from lattimer.

and willie you are right, as long as he stayed vertical, sekue was indeed a gazelle!

Junie played for Rich Grawer. Had some injuries which plagued him.

  9. I wouldn't get to depressed about the attendance. Went to the CIT game last night between Creighton and South Dakota. Creighton normally draws about 15 or 16,000 per game. They played the game at a different location, their old home, the Civic and drew 4500 with about 500 or so South Dakota fans. It did seem like a preseason exhibition game but I thought the atmosphere was great as both teams bands were there and I got to sit closer to the action. I would almost have to say I enjoyed the game just as much or more than any game I went to during the season. I did see Indiana State earlier in the season and they didn't look good but were pesky and hung in the game.

  10. I was asked the other day about golf courses in St Louis by someone who will be attending the NCAA games in a couple of weeks. He will be staying downtown and mentioned playing on Saturday at Forest Park. I'm not too familiar with courses, except around Belleville, and was wanting to know if anyone had recommendations of courses that would be good to play. Thanks.

BTW. I did see Indiana State play at Creighton. They didn't look too good and it was one of Creighton's larger winning margins in the Valley. However, they did have some injuries. Kevin McKenna is a highly respected coach here who made the local University of Nebraska Omaha team more respectable a few years ago. So it's a game we should win but should not be taken lightly.

  11. You have to remember that in our attendance heydays (90's), we had some very BIG attendance getters that probably skewed our attendance average. Games like Kansas, Mizzou, Marquette and those mega attendance grabbers in the Dome. We will probably never see those averages again since we have our own smaller place and I hope we never go back to the dome. When we get get into league play and if we don't completely fall apart on the playing floor attendance should improve. If we do not sell-out or come very close for the Dayton and X games we are in trouble.

I had the opportunity of watching Ole Miss play Ark-Little Rock in Oxford, MS a week ago and they had announced attendance of 5000 for that game. Even the very small crowd laughed at that one and I estimated it was around 2000. I could count on my two hands how many in the student section. Ole Miss has a very good basketball team this year, unbelievably athletic, and just handled both Kansas State and Indiana with ease in Puerto Rico. Now the next morning in the Grove, scalpers were asking twice the face value on tickets to a sold out Ole Miss-Tennessee football game.

Saw Arkansas-Little Rock play Creighton in Omaha yesterday. 15,000+. It was Teammates day so I think quite a few tickets were handed out. Amazing what 10+ years of 20 or more victories does for the attendance.
  12. Right now I think we are down 38-37. This is just dumb. Young or not they should blow these guys out of the gym.

They seem to have some offensive sets and plays. Is the "motion offense" what use to be called years ago "free lance". Sorry I'm a little frustrated. Too many years of watching games when it just seems a chore to score.
