  1. I'm not shocked fellow NBA players were calling Kobe offering him "support." In fact, they were probably calling him welcoming him to the infidelity club - as a junior member of course. I'm sure in the NBA there's 3 woman minimum to be a full member! The interview said Jordan had Kobe's number tracked down to call him since he didn't have it. I'm sure it was more along the lines of MJ offering advice to keep this out of the public and still maintain your sterling image. That and asking Kobe if he'd reccommend that resort the next time MJ needs "surgery":D

  2. when I played against foreign players (particularly a Greek post player) they all had deadly hook-like shots. Not the Kareem Sky-hook but a baby jump hook. Man was that tough to stop. From my experience I've found foreign players to be the most fundamentally sound I've ever taken on.

However, when play gets physical they can be stopped. I would be concerned that this season Ian may be shoved out of the lane too easily because of this. The style of play in Europe is finesse, not physical. He'll learn the US style in time.

  3. It's not like Green Bay is some Marquette hot-bed. It would be like moving a Billiken game to Springfield, IL or Kansas City. Plus, Marquette has never played at this arena so there is no "home court advantage" involved here. Marquette doesn't get another home game, they just get one less "road game" (and besides, they have won the last 4 at USM.

And no, Marquette didn't spend any money to get this game either. This was all USM's doings (again, Green Bay. Brett Favre, USM alum. You figure it out).

  4. Marquette had no say in the matter of moving the game. What the hell is Soderberg's problem?

Here's what USM coach James Green had to say:

Southern Mississippi coach James Green was quick to dispel a belief held by some that Marquette came to his school's administration with the idea.

"One of the things I want to make sure everyone knows is Marquette and Tom Crean only agreed, they did not pursue us playing in Green Bay," Green said. "That was a Southern Miss deal. I've heard that a lot of people feel they tried to entice us. That is not correct. That is something that I wouldn't want Tom to even have to deal with."

I think the idea of moving it was to make money and sell more tickets and Green Bay was chosen because of USM's most famous alum, Brett Favre.

  5. >

    > Either did anyone else. I know that is an issue with the

    >coaches. Kelvin Sampson at OU has made an talked about it

    >numerous times. There has even been scattered talk about

    >tying available scholarships to grad rates ... one of the

    >hang-ups is the coaches want a more fair program.

    >

With the implementation of the program to tie scholarships to grad rates the NCAA has proposed changing how grad rates are calculated. No longer would schools be penalized for transfers who graduate at other schools and they would get credit for kids who transfer in and graduate. For example, did you know that SLU will not recieve credit for Ross Varner graduating and will be penalized when Jon Seyfert graduates from Montana and if Randy Pulley "graduates" from Mi$$ou? In the future that will not happen.

  6. actually, Huggins and Cincy got a bad rap for grad rates because of the way the NCAA calculates them. They didn't get any credit for JUCO's who did graduate and if a player left early for the NBA or transferred and finished the degree outside of 6 years they didn't get credit for that either. When I went by the Cincy basketball office a few years ago the walls were lined with photos of all of Huggins's players who had graduated.

  7. DePaul has a good recruiting class with 4-5 top 100 kids and Andre Brown, who when he gives a damn is a great player. Plus, they're another year removed from Fat Pat's influence. Still, they lack a true PG (had Drake Diener playing it last year).

My early predictions for the top 5:

    L-Ville

    Marquette

    Cincy

    UAB

    Memphis

  8. I never realized Omaha was so far from STL. Says a lot about the hordes of Creighton fans who made the MVC title game on a Monday night.

As for Schaz's comment about MU, they did play SLU but rarely. I believe the all-time series is 29-21 with most of those games being since 1990. No idea why that is.

  9. I have to think geography and the fact they're a private school hold back SLU's establishment of true "rivals." Geographically SMS, Mizzou and SIU should be the biggest rivals but really, we don't have much in common with them as academic institutions. Similarly, Marquette and Wisconsin fans hate eachother like Mizzou and SLU but UW-Madison isn't Marquette's biggest rival and vice versa.

In conference Marquette and DePaul are similar academic institutions but now you have a distance factor (6 hours to Milwaukee) - Louisville and Memphis are closer but again, different types of schools. In fact, Marquette and SLU hardly ever played before joining the MCC together in 1990.

How often have SLU and Creighton played? Creighton seems to be in a similar situation in terms of establishing rivals. Would be a good game to see.

  10. I never thought we'd make it with him! A sweet 16 berth for MU would be a great accomplishment for this season, that is the best I could ask for at this point. But first, I want to see them defend the conference title, which I think goes through Louisville this year (even though Gaines finished up his 9 years of eligibility). If Myles is healthy they are definitely the team to beat.

  11. >Martquette just didn't lose Wade, they lost their big man as

    >well. replacing their top two scorers and their top

    >rebounder and defender is a huge task for Marquette.

Actually Jackson was not very good defensively - Townsend was/is their best defender and Sanders the best post defender. Didn't you see AJ tear Jackson apart? That was embarassing. Biggest negative with Jackson was his lack of a vertical leap. I think he only had 1 dunk last year. Besides, Kenny Brown was probably the best post defender in CUSA and SLU's best rebounder. How does SLU replace that?

    >While Perry was the central focus of the team, we return

    >more key players than Marquette does, and Perry load will be

    >easier to handle with all the returnees and Bryant coming

    >in.

MU brings back Diener, Merritt, Townsend, Novak, new Jackson (much better defensively), Chapman and Bradley (who were key in the Pitt win), and Grimm (who averaged a double/double in Europe this summer), plus 1 top 30 recruit (Mason) and 2 top 100 recruits (Bell and Christian).

Both teams are replacing special players in Perry and Wade and solid post playes in Jackson and Brown. Both have plenty coming back as well. Both will be just fine and at similar levels as last season.

  12. sure it did, but it seemed like he was saying SLU wouldn't miss Marque that much. Jump shooting and scoring is one thing, but all of the things Marque did as a player, plus the intangibles (leadership, hustle, etc) are damn hard to replace and I don't think there are many players out there who can replace that.

It just seems that the attitude is that losing Marque isn't that big of a deal. I've seen Bryant in practice and he's good, but he is no Marque.

  13. but others have over the past few weeks. Just something that has been knawing at me for a while. That post was not directed at you.

And it isn't that I have a negative impression of Bryant, but I do think expectations are far too high for him to step in and instantly replace Marque as many think he will. In fact, wasn't one of the reasons he left that he wasn't going to get the playing time he thought he would because of the freshmen coming in?

  14. that Perry will be easily replaced and SLU will probably be better, even though his replacement couldn't crack the regular rotation at Villanova, yet Marquette will be lucky to be on the bubble because they lose Wade?

I loved Marquee's game and the way he put the team on his shoulders in games like Tulane, L-ville, DePaul, Memphis, etc was amazing. He was one of the best and most clutch college players I've ever seen. When he didn't show up (Minnesota) SLU had no chance. The guy was a 2-time first team all conference. If he was 2 inches taller he'd been a first round pick in the NBA draft. Sure, his outside shot wasn't "great" but it was good enough in the comeback against L-ville and DePaul. By the way, wasn't he one of SLU's leading rebounders too?

Marque was a special college player, like Wade. But the way people are posting here it seems like Marque was the equivelent of Drew Diener. It's going to be harder to replace him than everyone thinks.

  15. Ever listen to Tony Korheiser? He grew up on Long Island and he often refers to ND as THE team on the East Coast in terms of general fan interest and media coverage. Where do you think the term "Subway Alums" come from? On the East Coast the #1 team is ND. This has nothing to do with Marquette, it's a fact of life. On the East Coast in the major media markets (NYC, Boston, Philly) the team of choice is ND first, everyone else second.

  16. According to Sportsline, ND may feel pressued to join a conference because of the reshaping of college football and the increasing chance that they may lose their currently guaranteed BCS spot.

"Tyrone Williingham's Irish might have to join a conference to have a better shot at playing in a BCS bowl." (today's Sportsline).

ND is the east coast's football team, they always have been. Why not join the Big East where they're virtually guaranteed of being a contender for that BCS berth every year as opposed to the Big Ten where they'd get their a**es handed to them annually (0-3 v. the Big Ten this year). Plus, in the Big East ND would be in almost total control, something the Irish covet and would not be possible in the Big Ten.

Unfortunately for SLU and other non-football schools, if a split does occur you may have a similar system to the BCS formed in football and non-football conferences would be left on the outside looking in. The NIT might become the only option for those schools and conferences. Imagine it, a top 10 Marquette team left out of the NCAA tourney because they're not in a BCS affiliated conference but a 14-15 Nebraska team invited because they are. Unless something happens soon that might be reality in a few years.
