  1. I, too, hope Gard keeps his job. The work he has done with this group is pretty remarkable considering the talent they lost after last year's run. As for Georgetown, that could be a very interesting opening based solely on the history of the program. Would Memphis be a better spot necessarily? I'm not so sure. Pastner has been able to recruit there but it feels like some of the Coach Cal luster, or perhaps slime, has worn off. Similar to when he left UMASS, I'm just not sure Memphis is as good of an environment as it appeared in the days directly following coach Cal. Not that it isn't an attractive job, I just don't know the relative appeal of Memphis to a candidate against the appeal of SLU.

I give Memphis an advantage since the academic standards to get in and remain conduct of having a pulse.

  2. Agree to disagree on the Minnesota and Wisconsin points. At this point I think Gard keeps his job, but don't put it past Alvarez to think he has a shot at Bennett. As for Pitino, Minnesota has 1 win in the big 10 this year. I know there are circumstances that may lead to him retaining his job, but they have underachieved under his watch in a major conference.

Alverez may reach out to Bennett but that will be it. They won't pay what Tony will want. Alverez won't even pay football coaches. Plus, there's bad blood between the Bennetts and Barry and Bo Ryan. I hope Gard gets the job, he's earned it.

If the Minnesota administration weren't in such disarray (beyond athletics) I'd think little Ricky would be gone but it's a complete dumpster fire at The U right now. Who knows, maybe daddy comes to his rescue....

SLU will be the top non Power 5 job opening save Georgetown and maybe Memphis opening up.

  3. Minnesota, UNLV, Rutgers, and Memphis jump to mind almost immediately with openings. Illinois as well. I wouldn't say it is for sure, but Wisconsin could choose to pursue Tony Bennett. Factor in an unexpected retirement or two and there could be some higher openings. Though if SLU is open, it would appear to be more attractive than other seasons. It doesn't look like there will be as many Power 5/6 openings this offseason, at least not compared to last year when Florida, Texas, Arizona State, Alabama, Miss State, and a couple others. That being said, I could be completely off here. But looking at the 5 that look pretty solid to be open, SLU would not be that different from them. Except Illinois which is a school that should be top 20 every season, but has been managed poorly since that final 4.

Minnesota may not open up yet. It's only little Ricky's 3rd year and the AD situation is unsettled. The Bennett to Wisconsin ship sailed years ago.

Of the Power 5 not mentioned, Clemson may come open, Oklahoma State is possible since Ford has been on the hot seat for years, any others would be rather unexpected. Good time for SLU to be actively hiring.

  4. Minimum of 3 from the A10. Dayton and VCU should be locks right now, SJU and Bona on the right side of the bubble right now. Bona with most precarious situation. SJU and Bona play the same 4 teams on the way out (each other once), neither can afford 2-2 to avoid sweating it out on Selection Sunday.

  5. Fordham will never be ranked 8th in the country. We don't need a big name to turn things around, we need a big name to get beyond the mediocrity we are not even at now.

Fordham doesn't have Chaifetz. Fordham doesn't have a legitimate recruiting budget. Besides, a "big name" isn't coming to a non Power 5 school with the direction the NCAA is going. We need to get a guy who will grow into a big name. Even if the guy uses it as a stepping stone to a Power 5 job it will mean SLU is back in the top 25. A retread who views SLU as a final destination, well, that what we have now.

  6. May in that interview did not give me the good feeling of seeing Steve Lavin or Kevin Stallings any time soon.

No AD in America is going to say anything about his coach's job status during a TV interview at halftime of a televised game. Read nothing into that.

  7. Gene Keady was definitely with Steve Lavin at St. John's as an assistant coach, breaking down game film and serving as a bench coach during games.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Keady

Much earlier Lavin was on Keady's staff at Purdue. So Lavin has worked in the Midwest.

SLU should not close any doors, especially with an available coach out there like a Steve Lavin.

Keady was a special assistant. He was not allowed to coach the players. Lavin's bench coaches were Mike Dunlap, Tony Chiles and Rico Hines and when Dunlap left Jim Whitsell left SLU for St. John's.

Yes, it's true Lav was on Purdue's staff, 25 years ago. Times have changed, especially with MJ in the picture.

Also, the knock on Lavin that led to his undoing at St. John's was his lack of visibility recruiting, especially locally. Plus, he left the cupboard rather bare at St. John's. He had multiple guys not qualify academically or leave due to disciplinary issues, things that wouldn't go over well at SLU, especially when they'd have to pay him over $2 million a year to come.

No retreads. SLU needs an energetic, up and coming coach, be it an assistant from a top program (e.g. Dane Fife) or a successful low to mid-major who was able to win without the facilities and resources SLU can offer (e.g. Scott Nagy).

  8. I'll take Lavin's X's and O's. Im not expecting Majerus Magic out of him. I am expecting him to recruit dancers. Hire Lavin!

Lavin's weakness is X's and O's. It was his weakness at UCLA and at St. John's. He struggled when Mike Dunlap left for the Bobcats job and hired Whitsell as his X's and O' guy. Keady was never a bench coach. http://www.bruinsnation.com/2011/2/4/1973417/why-we-hate-steve-lavin

That said, he's not going anywhere in the Midwest. He's a big city guy, his wife is an actress and fashion designer. He lived in a SoHo loft, that's his style. I would be surprised if he coaches anywhere again.http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/college/steve-lavin-new-coach-st-john-wife-mary-ann-jarou-set-city-storm-article-1.173300

  9. But wasn't Woolard's "National Search" for a coaching candidate just limited to down the hall at West Pine to where Soderberg's cubbie was? How in the world did Brian Gregory try to pursue the job? Sit out on the quad?

Woolard wanted to hire Gregory but Gregory wanted a significant financial commitment from the school, such as bigger recruiting budget, assistant salaries and facilities upgrades. Biondi wasn't willing to to do that so he vetoed Woolard and hired Soderberg who just wanted the job and was willing to take what SLU has to offer.

Eventually Biondi came around but only because Chaifetz ponied up the dollars.

  10. Give him an offer he can't refuse. Overpay. Get him here.

He made $1.8million at the end of his tenure at St. John's and leaving was a mutual decision. Can SLU match that? That said, likes doing TV and being on the west coast.

I prefer the assistant route. Dane Fife has been mentioned, that would be an excellent hire. Izzo has always respected SLU. He encouraged Gregory to pursue the job (after telling him not to pursue DePaul) when Romar left.

  11. Lavin is a cheater as well.

On paper Stansbury would be my top target. He is hardly squeaky clean either.

No, Lavin is not. That said, he's staying on the West Coast. Plus, there is no way his wife is moving to STL. She's a fashion designer now. If he takes another job it will be at USF where is dad coached.

  12. As a casual fan, I don't see the motivation for Crews to retire, since he has two more years on his contract, at $850K per. And, I don't see anyone on the horizon who is willing to fund the buyout for SLU. The contract extension was a bad decision (as we now see); the Billikens, I fear, are stuck with Crews, for at least one more year. Maybe someone will step forward to buy out one year, but not two. Just my two cents.

Where are people getting the idea that terminating Crews would mean paying the remainder of the contract? Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the buyout were rather minimal, such as less than one year. It isn't as if Crews had a ton of leverage to demand such a clause when he was hired. In fact, it was the administration that had all of the leverage in negotiations which to me indicates the buyout will be much less.

  13. To be fair, the Pac12 is a much more Women's Soccer-driven conference. Only 6 of the 12 field men's soccer and they had to bring in San Diego State to be that 6th team.

And yet Stanford just won the national title despite playing in a 1500 seat stadium (http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=208445358) and UCLA, College Cup 2 years ago, plays here: http://www.uclabruins.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208271493. Wahington's is a joke too. Herrman is also superior to almost all of the Big East soccer facilities. St. John's plays on top of a parking garage. We have it pretty good with Herrman.

Plus, every team benefits from Chaifetz.

  14. What does better facilities...minus chaifetz even mean? You mean for the sports that are not basketball, because Chaifetz has absolutely everything you could want for a basketball program...except a basketball team (heh  )

Basketball and volleyball, and I highly doubt anything those schools have is better than Herrnann. And don't forget all teams use the training and medical facilities in Chaifetz as well, which are certainly better than SIUE, Wash U and others in the region.

  15. This is what terrible coaching looks like in the last 16 seconds of a game. Simply fouling one of the bigs or guards who were all shooting 50% from the line would have given us the chance to score on the last possession. Instead the defense was set to stop them till the buzzer risky a potential 2 or 3 using up all of the clock. What a joke?

So you one of those coaches who are in the "foul when tied on the road in the last seconds" school. Coach K is intrigued and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
