  1. Randy Bennett would seem to fit May's criteria. A head coach with a high level of success. Has SLU connections. Runs a clean program. May be tired of getting beat by Gonzaga for the league bid every year in a traditionally one bid league. He could also reopen the Australian pipeline.

    Bennett isn't leaving. He's bulletproof at SMC, has an amazing piece of property where he lives. When he didn't go to Oregon State that was the message he wasn't leaving. Besides, the WCC has been getting 2-3 bids since BYU joined.

    As for running a clean program, the current NCAA pribation would say otherwise.

  2. This might be a dumb question but what happens to the rest of the staff? Did they get fired as well?

    They'll probably stick around until a new coach is hired. The team can still practice and someone will have to be watching them to make sure they keep up their academic obligations.

  3. Lavin's teams get W's, his teams make the postseason, he can recruit, he has a name in the sport..... "Lavin would be an awful hire" is completely wrong.

    He did make the tourney 2 times at St. John's, once with a team with 8 seniors he inherited and once when his first recruiting class (what was left) were all seniors. And he only one 2 post season games, 1 in the BET and another the first round of the NIT (2-8 overall in the post-season),). And don't forget that blowout loss to Robert Morris, at home, in the NIT. And he had to take chances on guys who SLU would never let in....many who didn't make it academically.

    However, that ship has sailed.... off to the University of San Francisco.

  4. Rex Walters fired by USF... at one point, he was one of those "young, up and coming coaches" I expect we'll see some higher profile firings next Monday.

    Lavin will get that job if he wants it. I have a suspicion that's why they pulled the trigger on Rex now.

  5. I didn't want to look back through this thread so maybe someone has more reliable info then me but from what I can find I believe Grant makes about $800k a year. So certainly we could bump his pay a bit or at least be competitive. He's jumped around a lot the last year hopefully he'd be okay settling down for a couple years

    Assistants rarely make that kind of money. A friend is the third assistant on an NBA team and isn't anywhere close to that.

    Santa Clara fired their coach 2 days after being eliminated from their conference tourney. There's your timeline to get it done.

  7. That model doesn't work as well anymore with the graduate transfer rule, along with the increase in overall transfers. If that rule is gone, it maybe comes back. It also worked a lot better when the 5/8 rule was in effect.

    Bo Ryan and Wisconsin would beg to differ.

  8. Rational thought would be Lorenzo Romar stays at UW.

    But UW is a major, BCS level Pac-12 program, the type of place where the natives can get restless, where not making the NCAA Tournament is considered a sin.

    Stranger things have happened than a LoRo bolting UW for MU.

    Here's hoping it does not happen.

    UDub fans would have to care about basketball for that to happen. They're more concerned about breaking the streak of 12 straight years of losing to Oregon in football than anything Romar is doing.

  9. Why would he leave Washington for Mizzou? Isn't he already in great shape to land both the Porter's as it is? And he can do it without the cloud of trouble that hovers over Columbia currently.

    He's on the bubble with the 5th youngest roster in D1, has at least one Mcdonalds's AA coming in next year, lives in Seattle. Yeah, he's going to Mizzou.

  10. Jankovich is untouchable right now with the NCAA stuff.

    I hate all things a&m so I don't want Stansbury. Plus what is his coaching style? Miss St. come on, he has no experience in the mid-west. Not sure if that really matters. He's older by about 14 years than Horn. Honestly, I wouldn't hate that hire dude had some real success.

    Cason would be acceptable to me but he has no HC experience.

    I'm thinking this way because Horn had success at a mid-major school, has ties to the mid-west, and I'd really like to see uptempo offense. I think it'll help in recruiting.

    Horn's problems at South Carolina were 1) he had no ties to the area. An example of a coach taking the first power 5 job offered while the iron was hot, and 2) he didn't cheat.

  11. I've got one for you... Matt Driscoll at North Florida. He just wrapped up his second consecutive Atlantic Sun title at a school that could barely compete at the Division II level 15 years ago. His is the most enthusiastic coach I've seen since Bruce Pearl. He has completely turned the entire athletic program around with his excitement and personality. His team has led NCAA Division I in 3 point shooting all year with only two talented players on his roster. If you are looking for unbridled positive enthusiasm, he is your guy. He is the anti-Crews.

    I had a chance to meet Driscoll a few years ago and was ready to run through a wall for the man after 5 minutes. He is ridiculously high energy and enthusiastic. Wouldn't be an expensive hire either.

    Then again so was Romar.

    Personally I'd rather do better than 50/50. I think this next hire is pivotal for the program. We are in bad, bad shape. We have had a 15-year average of being in the top 100, we are now in the realm of the lower third of D1 hoops. I think we need someone with a track record of success.

    The next great up-and-comer can also be the next great gaffe. If we fail with another coach I'm not sure where we'll be at 10 years from now. We need success and improvement NOW. This team cannot take more rebuilding.

    If this up-and-comer has the ear of some top recruits and is a high energy guy who comes from a respected coaching tree, then let's talk. We just cannot fail this time around. The money is secondary.. NCAA tournament appearances easily repay for the coach.

    Coach > arena. If we spent this money on an arena, but are unwilling to put a product in it, it is the ultimate in futility. 80 million for a place to hold commencement? SNORE.

    Soderberg was Biondi cheaping out on a hire.

    Plenty of proven low to mid major guys who would take the job for $700K or less. It has to be a good fit philosophy wise, mission and culture wise and geographically. I've served on committees where a great candidate didn't fit the culture and we moved on.

    He is a Majerus clone, except he isn't funny, can't recruit, and can't coach. His nickname for one his players was Cuntasauras.

    Why even bring him up? His time passed years ago.

  14. I have said it before, but I think we should give Rick Stansbury a serious look. In 14 seasons at Mississippi State he had 10 seasons where he won 20+ games. Now he is an assistant at Texas A&M and they are ranked 21st in the country. I like seeing guys have success at schools where football is king. I think coaches that have success at those schools could thrive even more at a school where basketball is the top of the food chain. He's from Kentucky and coached in Mississippi and Texas, so it's not like he's from one of the coasts and would completely have to restart his recruiting ties in this area.

    Renardo Sidney. All you need to know about Stansbury. Sold his soul, lost complete control of his team.

  15. Is a guy who get fired once from a BCS job immediately labeled a "retread?" I think there are a lot of good coaches who for whatever reason don't get it done at the BCS level, but still may be very good "mid-major" coaches.

    Also, plenty of young hot shot coaches who get their crack at the big time fail... Josh Pastner and Dickie Pitino Jr. appear to be heading down that road. Sometimes taking a guy who has had some success prior to getting fired is better than a guy with very little track record. Everybody likes to think the "young guy" is going to be the next Brad Stevens, but that often isn't the case. The coaching trail is littered with guys who were tabbed the next big thing.

    It depends on the reason for the individual no longer being employed there. Bad relationship with the AD? Maybe a new AD wanted his own guy? Running from violations (e.g. Frank Haith)? How old is he and how long was he at his previous job and what was the trajectory? Was he successful with the previous coach's recruits and how did the new coach do with the guys who remained and were recruited by the previous staff. Was he a good fit at that school in terms of geography and support? How long has he been out?

    I look at the hiring trends in the A-10 and Big East and recent hires (our peer programs), taking into account the changing NCAA landscape which probably influenced these hires. Ordered by standings:

    VCU - low major (Chattanooga, after 2 successful assistant hires)

    Dayton - assistant

    Bonaventure - low major (Robert Morris)

    GW - low major (Vermont)

    Rhode Island - low major (Wagner)

    Duquense - low major (LIU-Brooklyn)

    UMass - assistant

    SLU - retread from Evansville and Army

    Fordham - low major (Eastern Kentucky)

    George Mason - low major (Bucknell, after BCS level retread flamed out....BCS level guy who turned down St. John's in 2010)

    Big East (since that's the ultimate destination goal):

    Xavier - assistant

    Seton Hall - low/mid major (Iona)

    Creighton - BCS coach who was about the be fired and had a all-America son to play for him

    Providence - low/mid major (Fairfield)

    Butler - assistant who was previously head coach at a low major (Gardner Webb)

    Marquette - assistant

    DePaul - retread fired from Virginia who was previously HC at DePaul

    St. John's - greatest player in school history, never before a head coach

    Not that this necessarily means anything in the grand scheme of things but I was interested in the hiring trends of our peer programs.

  16. I thought RM got the assistants pay increased to be competitive? I agree these retreads are not worth talking about. By the way RM was not retread.

    Nope, he wasn't. He left his previous job voluntarily. When I sad retreads I'm referring to guys who were fired from their previous positions.

    so a guy who has been dismissed from his last two jobs, left a new coach with a team that has lost 17 of their last 18, had multiple non-qualifiers, would require at least $2 million a year and hasn't coached in the midwest for 25 years is your choice. This is a shtick, right?
