  1. Hate to even bring the topic up given the focus for the next few days, but it looks like they are going to at least discuss it in May.

    http://www.kansas.com/sports/college/wichita-state/article68305147.html

Creighton (who kept SLU out) is the only one talking about this. Nobody else in the BE is interested.

Any Gonzaga talk is all Few. The AD and President are not interested. Imagine baseball and Volleyball flying to Providence and St. John's for games annually. Few needs to start worrying about his repeated Sweet 16 choke jobs.

  2. Pitt and Georgia Tech are our only competition for Drew. And Valpo, of course.

I hope Tech didn't put out feelers to gauge interest before firing Gregory. I thought he'd get one more year there so I'm a little surprised at the timing. And hopefully he doesn't become a candidate for us.

Their season just ended after the NIT so I'm not too surprised. Someone stepped up with a big check.

  3. Because of what happened in 2002 when Romar left us. Literally the extent of Doug Woolard's "National Search" was down a hallway at West Pine. We are predisposed to not only accept failure at the highest levels of both our academic and athletic administrations, but expect it.

Don't blame Woolard for Biondi vetoing him and hiring the guy who begged for the job and promised not to ask for any fancy bells and whistles like an increased recruiting budget, charter flights or decent salaries for assistant coaches.

  4. I agree with this. If SLU had years ago made an effort to be like X, Dayton and Marquette, we'd likely be in the Big East. It may be too late for that, but there's no reason this program has to once again be mired in mediocrity. Very hopeful the new coach can get it done.

The biggest barrier to SLU getting an invite is already gone: Biondi. People hated him (a priest who served on a NCAAcommittee with him referred to him as a "prick" in a conversation with me about the Big East) and Creighton was bitter over the A-10/MVC realignment issue.

  5. First of all, I am not trying to make excuses for UNI. That was INSANE. If anything, you heave the ball into the rafters there.. BUT... the foul call that gave A and M an and 1 was not a foul. And on the last possession, Washpun was being mugged. No Call. Walkup was fouled twice on the last possession for SFA...no call. Both times when Jackson was patted he got 2 shots for ND. It becomes more and more apparent mid majors are not welcome. You have to do what Gonzaga did and blow someone off the court to win.

No, Washpun was not being mugged....and he somehow avoided a 5 second count even though nearly 8 seconds elapsed once he picked up his dribble. Never inbound the ball into the corner when being trapped!

  6. Let's not get carried away, SLU is not Yale, the problem with JUCO's is the transfer requirements. Read: No pe major at SLU.....rigor of academics is a different issue and Hines seems to be doing just fine.

Unfortunately they students without a good academic background who go to a JUCO, do not start a chemistry or biology major....they tend to do PE.

We do not need to put down other schools to make ourselves feel better.....

The PE major stuff is an antiquated excuse. The NCAA has a limit on the number of PE courses a Juco can bring in anywhere. Any Juco that is used to placing guys at 4 year schools puts their kids in legitimate majors. I've even seen Bio majors coming from Juco schools, though most are communications, criminal justice or business.

Where SLU has a disadvantage is the core course requirements, particulatly theology and philosophy classes, that aren't even offered at Jucos (or public schools if they are a 4-4 transfer). That increases the number of credits needed for graduation and may prevent them from hitting their progress towards degree percentages upon enrollment. Granted it's easier to get a 4-4 to SLU since they have to sit a year anyway and dint need to have PTD to practice do they can load up to get eligible over 2 summers and 2 semesters.

  7. why would he leave MU, where he is an assistant, to become an assistant at SLU? Not being combative - am I missing something?

He's been contacted about the HC job. That's not a guy I'd want. Not ready. Was saying that if he did come to SLU it would be as an assistant, not head coach.

  8. It's all about making the tournament and getting the paid units. SLU is getting paid through 2020 for the units earned in 2014. I would bet the AD is getting over $5 mil per year for the 3 tourney runs. If we don't make it back in the next few years and that money dries up, budgets are going to hurt. That is why this is a key hire.

SLU only gets a portion of that, the bulk is distributed amongst the conference members. That's why important for A10 teams to get some wins this year and why so many mid majors got screwed on selection Sunday

  9. I am going to call the ball: Cuonzo Martin to SLU. Cal has failed to renew his deal and he is free! Come on home!

No coach is going to leave a power 5 conference that got 7 tourney bids for a non-power 5 that had one of its regular season champions snubbed. Just the reality of the new college sports landscape.

  10. I don't follow UW basketball closely but with this being his 5th season in a row without making the tournament, it wouldn't surprise me if next year if he doesn't make the tournament he will be fired. Perhaps he knows he is on the hot seat so if offered slightly more money in a place he feels he could recruit, may be enough to leave. Not saying he is my top choice unless he would hire Michael Porter, Sr which would lead to Michael Porter Jr.

Like I said I have no inside knowledge or anything, just with 5 years in a row now of no tournament I could see the seat getting pretty hot and I'm sure he's aware of it.

5th youngest roster in the country, on the bubble until late February and a controversial last second shot at Oregon State, 4 years left on his contract, $3.5 million buyout, McDonald's AA signed for next year. He's fine.

  11. This thread is awesome - solidifying the board's unity!

I'm on the same page as most of you. Syracuse has absolutely no business being here, Michigan and Vandy were really disappointing inclusions, and Tulsa is one of the all-time most confounding inclusions - if not the most. Temple was a reach. And St. Mary's, Valpo, SDSU, and Monmouth - I feel really bad for all of them. It's a shame on an eye test level because those are the programs that make this event so much better - the mid-level BCS conference teams are what the NIT is made for. But I think there's a pretty strong objective case to be made on these, as well.

The other thing I'm struggling with is geography. I know they like to stick to their Overall-1-to-68 seeding process as strictly as possible, but they make exceptions to keep teams from the same conferences as spread out as possible within the brackets. Why can't they do a better job geographically, too, since they claim to give 1-4 seeds preference in that regard?

Why not make KU the Midwest #1 seed (Chicago) and put Virginia as #1 in the South (Louisville)? What about the 2-seeds? What's wrong with putting Villanova in the East to play in Philly (did they play too many games in that arena)? Then you could put Xavier in the Louisville regional. Michigan State got the best possible draw as a 2-seed geographically, but the Big East schools are swapped. I don't get it; it'd be more fair to the schools and it'd sell more tickets.

On Nova, they deliberately scheduled only three games at Comcast Center, or whatever the hell it's called these days, so that they would be eligible to play there.

However, the committee made sure Oklahoma City will be packed sending OU, Texas and TAMU there.

As for the overall field, the committee sent the message that conference tournaments have consequences....if you're a mid major. If you're a Power 5 team then getting blown out in the first round doesn't mean jack.

  12. And why was Boeheim absent? He was suspended by the NCAA!

Tulsa (Haith) has no business being in this field either. And neither does Butler.

What happened to St. Bona is the worst of all, perhaps without hyperbole, the worst NCAA snub of all time, including the old Missouri State (SMS) snubs. St. Bona tied for the A10 Regular Season conference championship, with an RPI of 30.

I'm fine with Butler. 6 top 100 wins, 8 of their losses to top 40 teams (5 to top 10).

Tulsa, Syracuse, Michigan, Vandy, those are a joke.

And here's something to chew on: Every eligible Power 5 school with a top-54 RPI made the NCAA Tournament. But eight non-Power 5 schools with top-54 RPIs did not.

  13. You think people in this thread are actually suggesting crean or Stevens are coming here? Can you link me those posts?

Look earlier in this thread. Both were on the "hot seat" along with Matta, Stallings, Romar, and a few others who would then be candidates and potentially come cheap thanks to buyouts.

  14. I believe it is similar to Football. The power conferences want all the revenue to go to their schools, so they deem only their schools are selected for the tournament.

The worst thing to ever happen to mid majors was George Mason's final four run. After that mid majors started being paired upmagainstvobe another, then Butler and VCU and WSU made it so now we're just left out all together.

Just getting into the tournament is worth around $1.6 million then teams and conferences get that for each win. As legislation continues to get passed by the Power 5 that gives them the ability to flex their financial muscles keeping less money out of the hands of the mid majors helps widen the gap and gradually push the non Power 5 schools out.

  15. Agreed. St. John's was absolutely terrible this year.

The only thing I can think of for thee committee's rationale for Syracuse is the time without Boeheim, when the lost to St. John's. But, that still does not justify Cuse getting in over Bona, let alone being a 10 seed.

The message is clear: mid majors are screwed. Just another message being sent to push us out.

  16. Excellent move by SLU. Im loving the names being thrown around.

The names are not being thrown around by SLU but by fans. There is a lot of wishful thinking here, much like the coaches who were going to be fired and come to SLU per this thread (Romar, Crean, Weber, Brad Stevens.....).

Having been involved in coaching searches I've found actual candidates are far different then those the media and fans "report."
