  1. I was there from 96-2000. Don't remember ever getting a talk on this. Maybe we did. I lived in Reinert (coed floor) for my first year and a half and then got in village when it opened for the rest of my stay at SLU. I remember the cohabitation thing, but it was rarely monitored especially with it being a coed floor...also made it easier to check friends in for overnight stays because you just had them check in with someone of that sex on your floor. After school I did live in Grand Forest for a year or so while I worked downtown. Anyway, I don't remember ever hearing anything about the risk of expulsion, but I think it was just "assumed" you wouldn't force anything to happen...

Thanks to all who have replied. I'm surprised they're doing less on the subject now than 20 years ago. If the players involved would have been brought up on these charges when I was at SLU, the only surprise would be that they were given an opportunity to re-apply.

  2. Sounds like they hit the subject a lot harder when you were there than when I was (Fall 2001-Spring 2005). After we moved in to the dorms freshman year, each floor had a meeting with the RA when he/she spelled out all the rules. Marguerite also had a meeting for the whole dorm to introduce the RAs' bosses and dorm chaplain. We had already been told by the RA what the hours were for opposite sexes in rooms and stuff like that but no one ever got into "no means no" or things like that.

I lived on a co-ed floor with a lot of wild people, and I can tell you that every rule was broken and then some. It was wonderful. Marguerite went single sex for floors my sophomore year, and the atmosphere wasn't quite as fun; lot less partying and a lot quieter. I don't think it was this way for every floor, though.

Anyway, I had a friend kicked out for a he-said, she-said hookup. It happened about 6 weeks into school. He lived in Gries, where it happened. The judicial board met right after the girl (after a week of persuasion by her friends) reported it, and he was moved to the end of the basement of Fusz. Then a bunch of sexual assault awareness posters and information were hung up around Gries/Clemens/Walsh on all the corkboards. He was that year's "example". It was scary for everyone because it seemed like a routine hookup turned into something that could happen to anyone at anytime. Every situation is different and I would never take sexual assault likely, but he got screwed by the judicial board very badly and it impacted his life severely.

You were there shortly after I lived on campus. If you're interested, send me a PM and I tell you about a guy I knew and the circumstances of he got kicked out.

  3. No, not Mike Sorrentino. I'm talking about the "situation" with our players.

Who on the board lived on campus at SLU?

I lived on campus for 2 years. Very early on they took all of the students living on campus (male and female) and had everyone go into one of the bigger lecture halls east of Grand. They told everyone in the room that sexual activity in campus housing was against the rules and you could be thrown out if you were caught. Then they spelled it out clearly for the male students that "no means no" under any circumstances and at any time. They pretty much said that if you were accused of inappropriate conduct (as a male) you were guilty until proven innocent. Were people having sex in the dorms? Of course they did. However, I also knew of a few people who got kicked out of school altogether for doing a lot less than what Kwamain did. There was a clear message given that in a "he said, she said" scenario, the guy was most likely going to lose out.

    Fair? No.

    Clear message? Absolutely.

I was in the dorms 20 years ago. I can only imagine that for legal reasons they do even more upfront now than they did back then. Can anyone who lives on campus now (or lived there more recently than I did many years ago) verify that this sort of seminar still takes place? Maybe it doesn't.

Whether or not the players were treated fairly can be debated. However, if you were living on campus when I lived there you souldn't have been at all surprised by this outcome. Again, I knew people who were kicked out of school for much less than what was indicated in the police report.

  4. Us being 2-3 games over 500 in the non conf schedule is hoping for a lot. We will have to sneak up on a few teams but I guess it could happen. I think you are being very unrealistic to even be thinking about post season play of any kind given our current situation - I hope I am wrong but I doubt it. After thinking about it maybe the best thing would be for KM to sit the year. His head won't be in it anyway what with missing the classes he was passing and having to make them up - heck my head isn't in it give all that has happen and the expectations I had. At this point maybe RM is right - have him sit next semester as well and start fresh in the 2011-12 season. When he comes back I hope he gets to sit with the team like Barnett and we need to announce him as returning at the first game. I think he will get a standing O.

after reading the police report, do you still think KM will get a standing O?

  5. ;)cory's best game by far this year. he showed energy. he was hustling for position at least 4 rebounds in the second half that others got were because of his great block out.

    cassity is playing great.

ellis is playing horrible. hope those couple of threes at the end of the game helps him get back.

salicich is playing worse than ellis.

all the freshmen looked good imo. i think loe and mccall will be stars before they leave slu.

conklin is conklin. plays hard but also makes it look hard. my gosh missed two bunnies. but all in all is the perfect backup forward. come in knock some heads, get a few rebounds, then out. perfect. plus it appears he accepts his role. cant not like the kid.

Cory's best game so far this year? This is the second game, roy. Maybe you should have typed "Cory's BETTER game so far this year"

  6. Not doubting you, but everytime Shimmy spoke to my team she raved on Theresa and her work ethic. Sometimes it seemed as if she referred to Theresa when answering question as if Theresa was her Andre Miller.

If Shimmy can't get along with the best women's player they've ever had that's a problem. If there were a better relationship, TL could have been in grad school or working on another degree. It was only 1 more year. I know she got married, but she also had the rest of her life to be married.

In any case, Shimmy hasn't gotten it done and it's not like Lisch is the only player who has walked away from the program. She's simply the best player who has walked away.

  7. teresa was already graduated and not only got married, she played professionally last year as well. it is doubtful she would have played in the wnba, so in reality she reached her basketball peak and moved on appropriately. while disappointing for shimmmy and the slu fandom, teresa did what was right for her.

She didn't quit playing NCAA basketball in order to make millions. The point is that you can't compare Theresa Lisch and Larry Hughes very well, other than the fact that they both left with eligibility remaining. Ted Mimlitz is a better Theresa Lisch comparison.

  8. I predict we will not get "slaughtered" by Georgia. It's early in the season and there is a lot of uncertainty for both teams. We lost our best two players right before the start of the season and have four freshman who will be gettig significant minutes in just their second game against a D1 opponent. Georgia may be without their best player, is coming off a scare against a bad team and will be playing their first road game. Sounds like a toss up to me. I just don't buy the idea that this is a certain loss. Do you have a prediction?

I'm going to predict an ugly Billiken victory (do we have any other kind?). We are young and green, but we're supposed to be talented. Georgia will also be shorthanded and on the road. I hope we have a good crowd. The 6th man could be the difference in this one.

  9. I noticed this weekend that someone posted Willie's Facebook status where he referred to SLU as "my team". That doesn't sound like someone who has forgotten his friends.

If you think about this in terms of a 20-year-old kid, there is definitely some attraction for Willie to come back to SLU. There is a comfort level to SLU for him. He knows the coaches, academic advisors, some profs. He's made friends over the past two years. He knows the basketball system, and he knows he's needed on the court.

There have been rumors of him enrolling in another 4-year school or a JC. I have no idea if this is true, but I'm thinking that few schools start new classes in Oct., Nov., or Dec. So he's probably sitting home, deciding what to do. He's probably missing his friends at SLU.

I'm sure many of the posters on here are Facebook friends with Willie (and Kwamain). How about giving them some love via FB. Let them know they are wanted back in STL. Hell, they might even read this board.

If so, Come Back Willie! The Bills need you!

And if Kwamain is reading this, same goes for you. Come back! We need you!

I'm hopeful that sentiment for Willie's return is 100% positive. For those of you who think he was unfairly treated, obviously you'd welcome him back. For those of you who believe he was justly treated, hopefully you believe in second chances.

For what it's worth, I've heard some rumors going around that WR may indeed try to come back. Based on what the Reeds and RM were saying a month ago, it seems like an unlikely turn of events. WR thinks he can be an NBA player. He has to ask himself what would be the best situation to make that happen.

  10. The first game was certainly disappointing. But while Doc. B thumps his chest (BTW, didn't he say an AP win was "highly likely"?... a 2-point AP victory, not my idea of "highly likely"), the season is not lost. It is just getting started. We could have and should have beat Austin Peay, but I'm not shocked that we lost either. As I stated earlier, I would also not be shocked if we bounced back and beat Georgia. Did anybody notice that they only beat Mississippi Valley State 72-70 in their opener? Doc B predicts we will get "slaughtered" by Georgia. I expect a roller-coaster early in the season, but I don't think it will all be bad. There is some talent on this team, it is just going to take a little bit for the kids to get comfortable and for the returning players to figure out their new roles without KM and WR.

What's your prediction for the Georgia game?

  11. I respectfully disagree. If this is the case, does a 57-42 overall and 26-22 conference record and 1 CBI apperance justify Coach Majerus's salary? This is not a knock on RM, I believe he does more than record indicates.

Shimmy may need to go but there is more to being a college coach than the above 3 factors.

How long do coaches who don't win and don't make the postseaston last?

Isn't this Shimmy's 6th season? If RM hasn't made the big dance by the end of his 6th season he should probably be gone. I've made many posts on here saying that we should start to question what he's doing if we don't make it this year and look to replace him if we don't make it by year 5. The off-court situation changes things somewhat, but that doesn't give RM a free pass for life IMO. I can throw away this season, and delay my timeframe by a year.

    RM is building something here.

  12. I've supported Shimmy throughout her tenure. When she started the program was in shambles, almost nonexistent. I was hoping she could pull a Grawer and lead the program out of the dumps. She's had a few bad breaks, more than her share.

She can't seem to get a breakthrough recruit and she cannot tie up the much of the local talent. It appears her program has lost a ton of momentum. She received a verbal from an area junior, top 50 in her class, a big time recruit. I hope Shimmy is still here by the time she can enroll.

I think you could replace "Shimmy" with "Jill' and this would be like what we were reading on here a few years ago. IMO, you can only be judged by wins, losses, and postseason appearances if you're a coach.

  13. This is how things have changed:

We are discussing a foul call against an OVC team that determined the game.

    Ouch.

Well stated. There were obviously some horrible calls down the stretch by the clowns we hired, but the fact that we were in that position at home against a team picked to be about 3rd in the OVC is pretty bad. This team is young and green, but it's also supposed to be our deepest in terms of talent in decades. The guys on the current roster are going to have to figure it out. Disappointing for sure, but I'm confident we'll see improved play the next time out. Lesson learned about what it will take to win, now let's move on!

  14. First, this topic assumes KM's coming back to SLU, which by what we hear, he is. Second, in light of learning his mom has cancer, one wonders what really would be best for KM this year. I mean that's a lot to deal with for anyone, never mind a 21 year old. Obviously, it's his and mom's decision and am sure they'll be content with whatever they decide. But from a purely basketball and academic perspective what is the best for KM? To my way of thinking it depends upon how the team's doing without him. We're once again a largely inexperienced squad w/o WR and KM. As WH mentions in his preview, our non con sched suddenly got more difficult without our top two scorers. So, assume it's not going well as we head into the conference season. Say a couple or three W's over .500. Right there, unless we win the A-10 tourney, the NCAA and the NIT are out of the question. Then couple that with one of the toughest conference scheds, what's the most we have to look forward to at season's end? The CBI? Does KM want to lose half his JR season to play in the CBI? Especially, when he could come back for a full two years with a good shot at making the dance in both of them? Obviously, if this team pulls off a miracle and we're only looking at 2-3 losses in non con and they're developing well, then he might want to sacrifice that first half and take a shot at seeing what we can do in the A-10. Still risky given the league is once again strong. When I heard RM was urging him to redshirt my reaction was no, don't. We're gonna need you. But that's a fan being selfish. Now after giving it some thought, it makes sense if he comes back as a student, works with the team, and then gets a fresh start in the 11-12 season. Treat it like a season ending injury. He'll be able to concentrate on his studies, play his 5th year w/ a very light class schedule so he's got that load off his plate and feel a little less pressure during his last year. Bottom line, I think he should sit it out, smell the roses, be there for his mom, get comfy again at SLU, and practice w/ this year's team to help develop his young future teammates.

IMO I'd leave the decision up to KM. However, I also think that it's much better for the program to have KM in the fold THIS year. This is like the CE situation last season in many ways. I admit that I was probably leaning towards having CE sit out last season, but his presence was probably worth an extra couple of wins for us. No one is satisfied with the CBI, but we had a long postseason drought before last year and it was better for the program than nothing at all.

IMO, momemtum is hard to get and even harder to keep. I'd like to see KM back this year and keep the program's momemtum moving forward. It's not like RM has another 10 years of coaching in him. Also, I think KM has the opportunity to play professionally, but I don't see him as an NBA player (I hope I'm wrong on that). I don't think missing 10 or so games will cost him anything professionally.

Also, I'm getting a little tired of rebuilding. Let's win some games!

  15. you won, we lost - nice game!

OK now bring on Tubby and the girls from the mens basketball team. Sorry to here the your two STAR players were kicked off the team for, WHAT??? Ohh those nasty boyz.

    GO BROWN INDIANS !

Wow. Trash talking on the heels of a loss.

  16. I like Rich Gould also, but the job he does seems to be up there with Phillp Guy IMO. Just seems to be lacking basic knowledge on the players.

I agree for the most part. Gould is kind of funny, but he does very little homework. I was at a Cardinal game one time when Gould was the sideline reporter. He had a stack of about 5 empty beer cups under the one he was currently drinking. I'll never forget him putting the cups to the side and doing the live report. That was classic.

  17. Alumnifan is right.

Guy, like the last remaining bigots, racists, gay-haters, etc, will have to just get old and die before we can be rid of him..........

Unfortunately, guy is part of the game day experience. And a really bad part of the experience. I think many of us on here won't simply accept the idea that we have to be stuck with him. I think you can fight city hall on this one. I could name a dozen local broadcasters who would be a million time better than guy.
