  1. Triangle was watching the Wisconsin vs Marquette game this afternoon, just a great game, trooly terrific. The announcer said that this was the 117th meeting between the 2 teams (that's right 117!). What was the first question that popped intoo Triangle's mind? That's right. What in the hell is the problem with SLU and Mizzou -administration, coaches, ego mainiatics - it is not like everyone recruits in the same areas. Coach Majerus has stated on numerous occasions that he has tried too schedule "A" game - is that his hope? Is Chris May on board? We need too hear more from Chris May on this subject. We also need too hear more from KMOX when they interview Mizzou's AD and Coach and insert this topic intoo their interviews. Who's scared - schedule Georgetown and Vanderbilt - but not our Billikens - give Too a break.

Weigh In - so it goes

This is truly a groundbreaking topic. I wonder why no one has ever brought this up before.

  2. That Lorenzo Romar is pretty good. He is doing well at UW SLU made a good hire on that one. Now only if we could've followed it up with another good hire.

As I recall, our record was worse each year under Romar and he didn't leave much talent behind. After being Washington's 4th or 5th choice, he's doing well in a well-funded program in a big conference in an area that he is accustomed to recruiting. He's gotten it done there, but I'm not sure you could call him a success here. Being second choice for big name recruits (as Romar was at SLU) is pretty worthless, IMO. I don't think RM gets left holding the bag on wishy washy recruits nearly as much.

  3. One thing is, I don't know how much of a difference Mitchell and Reed would have made a difference in that half.

An experienced guard would have cut down on the turnovers, but I agree that we couldn't touch this Duke team even with our full lineup.

At least his isn't happening against GW.

  4. If we can keep it to less than 20 that would be a positive.

This wouldn't be a game that I would want to bet. Plenty of variables. We CAN keep the score of games fairly low if RM's gameplan is working. However, we haven't played a team as good as Duke since that UNC game a few years ago. Also, there is a possibility that Duke could run up a big lead and then clear the bench for the final few minutes...allowing us to make it look a little closer.

If I had to pick, I'd say this is an 80-50 kind of game. I hope that RM has some tricks up his (sleeve) for this one.

  5. Reed close to returning to SLU, father says

Reed Sr. has apparently made amends with SLU.

Willie needs to complete 8 hours with a counselor in 10 days. Get on that couch Willie.

Willie has been running and scrimmaging with a KC area college team but hasn't been in the weight room.

Don't you think WR would have some extra motivation at this point? I can't believe he hasn't been in the weight room. My current gym charges about $15/month. If true, it's disappointing.

  6. It's only a rental when a team doesn't re-sign the pending free agent. In this case, the team re-signed Westbrook. The team has also now signed Berkman. Therefore, It's both and not one. They have both players for fair market value.

    +1

The Cards got exclusive negotiationg time with Westbrook as he was a member of the organization. They were able to make an offer before anyone from the outside got to compete.

  7. I just don't see how anyone can not be happy with this move. The risk is so minimal. We were looking at going into the season with Craig and Jay. If Berkman stinks it up, they are still there. There is no commitment past this year, so at worst it's an 8 mil gamble. In todays baseball world, that is chump change ... and even at the worst case he's a valuable bat off the bench.

Like courtside just stated Pat Burrell plays in the outfied, as does Adam Dunn. The list of poor fielding outfielders with big bats is huge over the years. Hell, the Cards employed Lonnie Smith. Berkman also has something to prove, and I wouldn't discount that. He signed this contract without incentives, because he knows if he can play the field and hit like he's done in the past, next years deal will be much better. He probably could have had a longer American league deal, or a deal with a team to play 1st base for longer and more guaranteed money, so he has quite a bit of risk himself.

    I'd bet on 500 ab's, .280/20-25/80-90 and I wouldn't be shocked to see .300/30/100.

The risk, IMO, is having no money avaiable at midseason. However, I think it's a risk worth taking.

  8. KF, I think I get the logic here now. See, Pujols, the Cards, MLB and the US Government are all in on this age conspiracy. They all know how old he is and are trying to keep it under wraps. But, Pujols is being a D-bag and wants a 7+ year contract even though everyone knows he is really 34 or 35 (he isn't quite sure of his age, he might be 37.) Now, he has put everyone in a bind because he won't play ball like they all agreed back when he was drafted. The Cards figured he would agree to a 4 year deal since he is ancient and all. But, he is a greedy MFer and knows they can't reveal his real age due to the conspiracy and all. But, MB73 and his credible source are here to reveal all and toss a little knowledge our way so we aren't shocked when the Cards don't resign him.

I know its tough to get your mind wrapped around this, but if you just slam down some cheap gin and listen to the Best of Kevin Slaten, it becomes easier.

If Pujols is really older than he claims and everyone knows it, the advantage would be in the Cardinal's hands. You go with a 4 or 5 offer and tell Albert that you spill the beans about his age if he declines. If Albert is really 34, 35, 56, 73, etc., even the Yankees wouldn't go 8 or 10 years on the deal.

  9. Rick Majerus says we should be in the MVC; do you speak of him with the disrespect you show me? It is not that big of a deal, a lot knowledgeable adults think we should have elected to get into the MVC, not just RM and me. Grow up, drop it for Christsake.

As it relates to Albert, I never said I know ALL the facts about Pujols, just that he is 3+ yrs older and baseball people know it... through a credible contact of mine. AP got established before MLB started to understand that many of these kids were misrepresenting their age. MLB now is impeccable in their research of south of the border players.

I do not care what you think, you will some day find out. Might be soon, might be a long time... it depends upon how the Cardinal contract issue pans out... he has one more yr here... it could blow up, or not.

I hope Cards and AP are reasonable and work it out.

Some who say they do not care how old he really is are not too sharp... baseball skills erode dramatically for most around age 33-34-35-36, depends upon the individual. A chosen few can make it longer. Who knows? But paying him $ 30 million a year 'til he is over 38, or 'til he is 42-44 just to make the fans happy NOW is not good business. Cards will not do it. They are too smart. That is why we are still all wondering why there is a delay.

This is the end for MB73 on this topic, just trying to inform some fellow Billikens.

Albert got started before MLB knew that players lied about their age?!?!?!?!?!?!? While things have been tougher since 9/11, MLB set up an office in the DR in 2000 to help deal with this problem. It's been going on for decades.

    Remember David Green?

  10. The Cardinals know.

This issue is, how do they handle it? It's a public relations nightmare. Very complex on both sides if you take the time to think about it, though that would be asking a lot of you.

An inside baseball person informed me of this issue. Again, Pujols came to USA, went to high school, said he was 18, really was over 21. We may not find this out officially for a long time, but we will someday.

I know the Bergman deal is one yr, it is insurance in case we move Pujols this yr. And no, KF, there is no link, give me a break.I HOPE that both sides are reasonable, and we sign him to a 4 yr deal, maybe 5, for huge bucks. But I doubt it. 100% chance we re-sign him? There is a good chance, but not 100%.

(MB73/Kevin Slaten bullcrap?) Who TF are you?

"bergman" is not insurance in case we move Pujols this year. Pujols will most likely not be moved this year unless the team is 10+ games out at the deadline and there is no chance to resign him. Albert is a 5 & 10 player who would have to approve any deal.

As I posted earlier, I wouldn't be shocked if Albert is older than he claims. However, if you can't prove it, you're pretty much talking out of your a$$. Albert is a pretty big story these days. Don't you think that there are people in the DR who know how old he is? If it's that obvious, why has no one spoken up yet?

  11. I think you are right about the game being on ABC. I think it was actually regional coverage and given that we were getting blown out pretty early, they likely moved off us pretty quickly.

Prior to that game, you may have to go all the way back to the CUSA championship game in 2000 which was on CBS.

It really is kind of sad how long its been.

On another sad note, during the Kentucky/UNC game a second ago they just ran an in-game promo of the upcoming Duke game. The SLU highlight they showed? A Salecich pass to Willie Reed for a monster dunk...

I'm surprised they didn't have an artist's rendition of SLU, like you see from a courtroom where there are no cameras allowed. ;)

  12. Looks pretty good and is getting lots of pt. We'd b unreal with him and Willie together.

There are plenty of guys on other teams who might make us better, but I'm not sure Harrelson is one of them. While I'm still holding out for a strong finish from this bunch, it looks like we're seeing a lot of player development for next year and beyond. IMO, Harrelson is at best marginally better than anyone we have on the floor now and would have probably been our 7th or 8th man at best if WR and KM were playing.

He's not talented enough to be worth the hand wringing, IMO.

  13. I am correct, he is 34.Doesn't the Berkman move make you wonder? And all the quotes from Cardindal officials about priorities the last few months... sign Westbrooke, get a middle infielder with some offense, get a lefty in the bullpen, get an outfielder with power... but almost no emphasis on Pujols.

If he was really 30, and he wants to stay here, why haven't we signed him yet?

    Think.

Can you post some sort of link to prove this "fact"? I wouldn't be surprised if he's a little older, but nothing had ever been verified to my knowledge. Please enlighten us.

  14. The worst of college sports? SEC Fans and the SEC game atmosphere is COLLEGE SPORTS. You have no clue.

There are dirty dealings etc but don't try to just pin this as an SEC problem.

Don't assume that Cam knew anything about any pay for play. You have no clue about what their father son relationship is like. So you have no insight into this matter to assume anything.

Think about the WR situation his dad goes on the radio and says one thing while the son immediately tweets the opposite. Should an athlete be punished for something they had no part in? I don't think so it is unfair. I agree it is a slippery slope and will be hard to differentiate between the guilty and innocent in the future. That is the way it has to be any other way is unfair.

The NCAA did move faster than normal on this and I am thankful for that. However, that is just the way it goes when a story is getting constant media attention. Yeah there is some pressure to not disqualify the best player in the country on the best team in the country. There is just as much pressure to make sure you get it right under that much scrutiny.

Unfortunately, the SEC being in violation of NCAA rules is COLLEGE SPORTS as well. I think they're 2nd in all-time probations behind only the current Big 12. Ahh, the poor SEC.

  15. Duke haters, a phenomenon I have observed for quite some time.

Why hate superior athletic achievement in a top 10 academic institution, a (relatively) clean program?

    Makes no sense.

Jealousy, I believe, like the Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame football years ago. Maybe the NY Yankess fit in there somewhere.

Duke haters? Makes me think of the guy on the commercial who says "that's why the color yellow makes me sad".

I don't hate Duke. I don't really care about them one way or another. At least this is a game that's generating some emotion among our fans. We don't get too much of that, so what's the big deal if our fans are up for the game?

  16. List of problems with Qatar, just off the top of my head:

-Not even close to enough stadiums right now, and need to build quite a few in 12 years.

    -Heat: Oppressive, killer heat.

-Infrastructure: long, long way to go. Little desert island in the Persian Gulf. Getting around won't be bad distance-wise, but expect terrible traffic in every direction.

-Water: Qatar was one of the countries featured in a project my class did in Tim Kusky's Natural Disasters class at SLU. They might not have any damn water by 2022, no joke.

-Alcohol: forbidden in many parts of the country, thanks to good ol' Islamic law. Granted, the big oil money countries like Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE are pretty lax on foreigners and the oil barons there, but it isn't easy for everyone everywhere there.

It's an extremely wealthy country, one of the highest on a per capita basis because of oil. That will give them the ability to build a lot of stuff quickly, like they have been doing lately. But a place this small, hot, and developing is a weird choice to host this event.

Just a few thoughts...I'm sure that corruption is a huge factor here. Also, FIFA talks quite a bit about promoting the game around the world. Not to mention the fact that people here aren't very passionate about the game. All that said, we have the best venues and will easily sell 70K+ tickets to every game played. No other country in the world can match that.

BTW, don't forget the corruption factor with the Russians in 2018. They make Italy look like a hippie commune.

  17. Only one thing is responsible for any of our loses so far this year...and it has nothing to do with any decision RM has made.

At some point we have to accept the roster as it is and try to win games. I don't necessarily disagree with RM on this one. Ellis has been the same player this year so far. That said, missing an entire game is a pretty strong message. Also, I'd rather be missing only 2 starters from last year instead of 3.

  18. Now, I am a RM supporter. However, what the hell is he trying to prove here? He is willing to sit a player who could have helped us win a game just to prove a point? On top of that, while Cody is still not a good defensive player, I have noticed marked improvement from him these past few games. Personally, I just don't get what Majerus is hoping to accomplish here. We are already short-handed and he decides to just sit one of our best scorers during the first road game to make a statement...Is this one of his motivational attempts or something?

RM has been around the block has had past success, and you know he'll do things his way. That said, whenever possible I'm in favor of coaches disciplining players in ways that don't contribute to losses.

  19. I will respond to the rest other than A: if you don't like college basketball, why are you here? and B: you say if college basketball teams only played as many games as college football teams, they would have the same amount of interesting games- to which I say, they play more games and therefore have more interesting games. Not to mention, the games are a snappy 2 hours instead of 3.5 commercial-filled hours. Hey, the #1 ranked team we play next is playing the team that started the season as #2 tonight- and I don't have to give up my entire night to watch it. Yes, sir.

And as for the final point, is your memory seriously that short? Do you think Charlotte and SLU are in the A10 because the A10 is some basketball school-craving monster that sucked them out of C-USA? Yeah, that's right, we were just dying to get out of a conference with Cincinnati, Memphis, Louisville, DePaul, and Marquette for a conference the next notch down.

The A10 is a horrible example; looking at the many forms it's taken since inception, it's basically just taken what it can get as bigger, football-centric conferences have their way.

I clearly posted that I like college basketball. I like basketball and football (and baseball, hockey, etc.).

If I'm following you here, you like college basketball because there are more games on the schedule and, in theory, a couple more interesting games because of that. I can buy that point. Following that thought process you would also have to conclude that there are a lot more uninteresting games as well.

My post had nothing to do with why SLU isn't in CUSA (or the Big East). The reason I mentioned the A10 is that it's OUR conference. They have more former members than Spinal Tap but, if they weren't in the business of expanding, why did the A10 go from 12-14 members in 2005? You posted that the A10 has "taken what it can get", which also means that they were interested in adding teams in new markets. Even among great football expansion, the Big East added Marquette and DePaul when they clearly didn't need to. Clearly some basketball conferences have become bigger as well.

  20. Things aren't all doom and gloom. This is a lost year, but if KM comes back as expected, we will be pretty well-positioned for next year. It is frustrating because this was supposed to be a breakthrough year, but the whole he said/she said fiasco may only push us back one year. I really like the potential of McCall and Jett and if you throw KM in there, we suddenly have a very dynamic backcourt next year. I also like the potential of Evans and we'll have the addition of Barnett who will give us another scorer. We should be strong at the 3. The obvious hole to fill is to get a big.

I agree that's it's not all gloom and doom, but this may be more than a 1-year blip IMO. We still have talent, but there are a lot of question marks going into next year. I think RM will be really earning his money over the next 18 months.

IMO, this year would have been a strong chance to get in and next year would have been a sure thing. I would now say that next year is a good chance and who knows beyond that?
