  1. Tonite I noted that the A10 as a league is in 7th place in the Ken Pomeroy RPI standings. That ranking sets us apart from the Pac10 (9th), CUSA (12th), every media's favorite MVC (14th) and the West Coast with Gonzaga et al, including Portland (15th). Where is the chatter regarding best league for SLU now?

Our RPI (161) improved some 30 pts with our win over Jacksonville Wed nite. When we score a huge upset at MoState Saturday, it will do yet another large jump. The next four games IMHO will determine whether our two second semester potential additions will red shirt or attempt to play this year. Ken Pom predicts a 15 pt loss for our Bills on Sat.

How bad has the Pac 10 become over tha past few years? I know things will change, but we're more than halfway through December and their rpi is behind the Colonial. They're starting to look like a 2 or maybe 3-bid conference.

  2. We are keenly aware in Springfield about the SLU hype and how you all never live up to it. Last year was supposed to be the year and then Ellis didn't get there in time. This year you have two guys out (who may NEVER come back--who knows?) but sure everyone is trembling about SLU in Springfield. If you look at the series historically, it is rather one sided with the good old boys from the 417 in charge. No reason to suspect that that will change. The more I read here, the more I realize how much fun it is going to see all of the despair after you get smashed. But a lot of A10 teams are going to do that so embrace the mediocrity my friends.

Are you really going to do a touchdown dance if you win a home game against a team filled with 1st & 2nd year players? It's a game that SMS is clearly supposed to win.

  3. Marquette who stayed within 5 of Duke, is 175 on RPI. They also are currently ranked 1st in the Big East (record).

Marquette is already in the Big East. I think booster's point is that SLU will need a good run of success to get consideration for a better conference (if any offer is ever extended).

  4. In one sense, it might be better for SLU to not play Mo. State because it keeps Mo. State out of the St. Louis media and keeps Mo. State away from its recruiting, student, and alumni base in St. Louis.

On the other hand, in upcoming years, I think SLU will have the better team, and Mo. State would be a win on the SLU schedule. Don't you think they're keenly aware of that down in Springfield?

Irrespective, I will need to see compelling evidence to support SLU ever playing 2 years in a row, or 2 successive series games, in Springfield. That just does not pass the smell test. That is a not a solution. The next game in this series, after tonight's game, needs to be at SLU.

Agreed, unless SMSU wants to play 2 in a row at Chaifetz after next year.

  5. We don't like the Rockhurst game, but that area is an important feeder to SLU. You guys keep going with Arkansas State. Then keep complaining when you don't get an at large bid.

Since we'll never play a game at Rockhurst, I'm not sure I agree with this. How would that help? From what was in the paper earlier this year, we play Rockhurst because Biondi insists.

  6. Let's get a SLU win tonight and then replace the former SMS on the schedule.

There should be no SLU concessions for them. It appears Mo. State created the alleged scheduling issues. If they want to play SLU again, the next game should be at SLU, period.

This series will prove to mean more to them. They recruit the St. Louis Area, they have alumni and students from the St. Louis Area.

Replace them with Bradley (an old rival, 69 previous meetings) or Creighton.

Do Creighton and Bradley want to play us? I wouldn't mind either if it came to be. Based on RM's recruiting I'd like to see a regular home and home with a Chicago area school (even UIC or Chicago State) and maybe even UWM. I'd obviously rather play the big boys from those towns, but they don't appear to be willing.

  7. Furthermore, I realize that it is my background (lower middle class from rural area, public school) that has caused so much scorn as much as being an MSU fan and tweaking you all a little bit. As this holiday approaches maybe we should all look in the mirror and try to be more accepting of those from different backgrounds. Just because daddy doesn't make high six figures and can't send me to Chaminade or Horton Watkins does not mean that I cannot have opinions. And be right about many of them. Good day gentlemen (and ladies--I am about inclusion)and I wish you all well. Enjoy the game!

Last time I checked Horton Watkins was a public school. You could have moved to an apartment in Olivette and gone to school there if you really wanted.

  8. because Grawer was feuding with better players.

    [/partial quote from the Torch]

Grawer obviously while at SLU preferred the guy he could develop over the ones who had dominant talent.

Make your own list but I was embarrassed at his benching of

Footes, Douglas, Claggett, Skinner, Robinson, etc.

AB was one of the few talents that worked so hard and maybe Grawer trusted him because he never really developed the jumpshot to go with that prototypical 4 body

I believe Skinner transferred to KY Wesleyan, and Stewart was at Okie City (not Okie State, Okie City). They were both complete a-holes, and I was never embarassed by benching those guys. An assistant coach had to go up to Robinson's dorm room every morning to wake him up, otherwise he wouldn't get out of bed and go to class. That one didn't embarass me so much either. Do you think RM would have put up with Robinson?

The program was better off without Skinner and Stewart. By letting the young guys play, the 5-23 season led to the tourney teams a couple of years later.

  9. Is there really no TV for tomorrow nights' game. If no, it is an absolute embarrassment. How can the program not line up TV for a holiday game on the road against the largest school in the state? This is a joke.

KPLR is showing re-runs of Bones and the Closer. What's your problem? ;)

They would be going head to head with the Blues, but I don't think that should be eonugh to stop them.

  10. The program wasn't prepared for the shocker that was the Kangeroo Court, as some describe it.

As I've posted on here before, I'm shocked that people are surprised by how this played out. When I went to SLU they were very clear about what was allowed and not allowed on campus. The biggest surprise to me is that KM has a chance to get back into school. I know a couple of people who were kicked out of SLU for doing far less than what happened here.

That said, from what I've learned in a previous thread, the university has apparently dialed down the rhetoric somewhat over the past 20 years.

  11. Majerus won't get any big extension... at least at a million a year... unless he can turn things around this year or next.

It's not all his fault. Mostly, the inability of recruits to stay in the program for a variety of reasons, almost all have nothing to do with RM.

Moser will take the reigns unless someone big gets fired elsewhere and can come coach here.

The second best option: Bob Knight. He's said this past february: “I never said I wouldn’t coach again,” “I’ve simply said in the past, if the right situation came along, I would be interested.”

With Coach K. approaching his 902 win mark, he might want to get back in business. He'd need an associate head coach like Moser to do the recruiting because an old guy like Knight is going to be too lazy to travel all over and deal with all that.

He'd probably cost about the same as RM:

Here is his contract at TT (a fraction of the RM salary) http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/knight/knighttxtech52001k.pdf

As shaky as things look right now, we might need an extension for RM. He only has 2 years left on the contract, and that will start to make recruiting a lot harder. If possible, I'd like to give him 2 more years that would include some kind of reasonable buyout if things go south. As I've posted many times, I thought that next season should have been the drop dead year for getting to the dance. Based on everything that has happened, I'm willing to extend that by a season.

  12. Thank you kshoe and Pelican! I wrote a long post in response to the various people asking why we just didnt cancel this game or give the money back and not show up but I ended up just discarding it all because I thought, being new to this board, that there is no way they could be serious about that. Cancelling this game would have put SLU's program in much worse shape than it would be if Majerus left. This would have frayed the relationship with Duke (ok, most could live with this) but the biggest bridge burned would have been with CBS because of their, albeit small, regular season marketshare of College Basketball broadcasting presence. If we would have cancelled that game the program says good bye to $75,000, missed the opportunity for a high level of competition, SOS ratings, a national audience (and its recruiting exposure- yes, even a blow out like this can be helpful to the recruiting efforts) not mention that it would draw far more negative attention to the program. Cancelling this game is a much bigger admission to the flandering state of your program than just showing up, cashing a check and taking your lumps like a big boy program. Hundreds of other schools do this regularly with their full bench and you all want to go and hide under the bleachers because we aren't at full power? Ridiculous.

IMO we have enough trouble scheduling the BCS types as it is. If you cancel a December game in late October you can look forward to playing teams like SIUE next season.

  13. why cant you do both?

I'd rather be playing to win instead of playing "not to lose by too much". IMO, slowing things down wouldn't have helped much anyway. Duke averages 80+ ppg and has played much better opponents than SLU. How can you "take the air out of the ball" when you're having trouble moving it past half court? How can you "take the air out of the ball" when you're having trouble completing passes on the occasions that you do make past half court?

I'm not sure what game you were watching. Duke probably won't go undefeated this year, but they're far and away the best team going right now, by a longshot. They'd have beaten us by 20 even if WR/KM hadn't gotten into trouble. Were you really expecting freshmen guards to run a the shot clock down to 2 seconds each possession against this team?

I rarely make excuses for our program, but this was the first game in probably 20+ years that I knew we had no chance to even keep it close. The experience on the current roster isn't there yet.

  14. actually ace, north carolina was a ranked team and got a 3 seed to the ncaa tourney that season. they were good. better than texas a&m which i agree was a total embarrassment game that season and a game soderberg should have been crucified for that year as well.

i agree this is a very good duke team that looks to be the team to beat nationally this year and my point is not to go back to 2005 or to compare coaches. my point was only to say that i think we should approach each game with a purpose do whatever we can to try to stay in the game. i didnt see anything different saturday strategy wise then any of our other games this season and i think we indeed have more talent top of roster to bottom to have given them a better game than a 40 point blow out. now if you know of what the game plan was to try to make it close hey let me know. obviously playing straight up was not the preferred approach.

Was your goal to "make it close" or work on your game to make your team better?

  15. Just for the heck of it, as there's really nothing interesting to post about yesterday's game or the loss of WR and KM, what have been the top 10 topics on this board over the past 10 years or so that have been beat totally into the ground and should be ruled out for future posts. MY picks

1.) SLU vs Mizzery annual game

    2.) MVC vs A-10

3.) Blake Ahern, non recruitment of greatest player never to wear a Bills uni

    4.) WR/KM dismissal, exile, expulsion,

5.) Biondi's degree of commitment to being a top 50 program

6.) T Too's sanity (don't expect you newer guys to understand this one)

7.) Conference realignment, ie will there ever be a papal conference and will SLU be invited

    8.) Tommie L's love/hate for RM

9.) Jimbo 5's love for Teresa Lisch

10.) Is Billiken Roy really Ward Cleaver?

Come on, 72! How about Drew Diener's haircut?

  16. Triangle is trooly sorry for bringing up a topic that you 2 cannot understand. There is a new "dynamic" now in this discussion. Our Billikens now have an arena that they can schedule any night of the week. They both have their own arenas, there is no reason for any other "entities" to become involved. Mizzou played in a half empty arena on this Saturday afernoon against who? Of course our Billikens play in a half empty arena pretty much all the time. This is a money maker for both schools. Is Mizzou fearful that Billiken fans will not support their team and drive 110 miles and bring a much bigger gate than who they played tooday? Hell, our Billikens played Duke tooday, Mizzou played Georgetown and Vanderbilt. It is time for people too put the preasure on and put petty differences aside. Triangle just doesn't understand it, doesn't understand the animosity and especially the AD's attitude towards this subject. Wisconsin vs. Marquette - 117 years - one year here, one year there.

    so it goes

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

Been there, done that. YES, since we built the new arena a couple of YEARS ago this subject has been covered. You have shed absolutely ZERO new light on the subject.

What's your next earth-shattering topic...RM is close to signing an Aussie named Cody Ellis?

  17. .... I am starting to side with the guy wanting to toss his eight tickets. How many years do we have to endure this? Why are we even bothering? Are we even bothering? If I had to watch one more CBS-Duke promo .... all the breaks were Duke highlight reels with the exception of the pre-game shake of hands with K and Majerus. Even get to see little Dukies in the making. Wonderful.

Who was that team? What happened to Cassity? Bum ankle? Ellis? Is the sickness from the summer that debilitating? Maybe it is. Has Salescich ever stepped onto a basketball court before? Remekun must still be a large work in progress. Conklin? Hey --- he looked better built.

Good notes: Keep McCall, Jett and Evans. Evans needs more mintues. Loe? Don't know --- too early to call.

Seriously ---- we looked respectable in some terms but those guys ate us up like we were standing still. Who is going to beat that team? I can't see it happening. And Irving was/is out and they still don't lose a beat. Frankly, it was another embarrassment. Nothing else to say other than maybe even hoping for this program is futile. Our lineup looked no different than guys named Entwhistle, Seyfert, Latimore, Barantine, Caswell, Varner, Newborne and all the other well-liked gentlemen and scholars that came before today.

Its hard to say ths but ..... so it goes.

I expected an 80-50 Duke win (that's what I posted a few days ago). That's pretty much what I saw today.
