We'll Roy, maybe Spoon was just trying to pump up his guy going into the NBA draft but I distinctly remember him giving interviews after the season saying that Larry was killing it from behind the arc leading up to the start of the season then the injury changed everything. I don't think it matters in the final analysis when valuing Larry Hughes as a college player. He did so many things on the floor both offensively and defensively that he was an NBA lottery pick after his freshman year despite the subpar % from three. I think this whole thread started comparing Hill to Hughes coming out of high school. Larry was a stud recruit out of high school. Can't remember what he was ranked. I'd guess top 25 in the country. To assert hughes was ever a good shooter, injury or not is a stretch. Hughes was indeed a scorer, but he was not more than a mediocre shooter. Beal is far more of an outside threat than larry was.
-
And remember that Hughes took a bad fall in the last exhibition game badly injuring the wrist on his shooting hand. According to Spoon, it affected his shot for the entire season.I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about Hughes vs beal. And I disagree. What I always hear is that Hughes was not a shooter and beal is. Yet their 3 point percentages were similar - around 30 during their freshmen seasons. Hughes was a better playmaker and defender. He scored 20 ppg vs 14 and led an otherwise mediocre team to the second round of the tourney. He was national freshman of the year. What did beal do this year that was so great? His team underachieved and probably didn't finish any better than the 1998 billikens team.
I can't think of many freshman guards who have ever had a better season than Hughes.

+1 My thoughts exactly. Doesn't move his feet well in space. The problem CR has had since day 1 is his footwork. He needs to improve it to be able to handle the more mobiles 4s on D

He looks lost guarding outside the paint. His best defensive skill is as a shot blocker, which is best utilized parked in the paint. The A10 doesn't have too many diesel PF's who make their living in the paint but, if we happened to play such a team, then maybe Cory could get some time at 4. Perhaps someone has seen Cory play 4 in practice and has a different take on it but I'd have to see it with my own eyes to be convinced Cory could play 4 on anything other than a very occasional basis. Why do you say Cory is strictly a 5? You don't think he can play the 4 alongside Manning or Loe?
-
Battle Cory for PT? Cory is strictly a 5. GG is strictly a 4. We have a big hole to fill @ 4 moving into next season. Conklin averaged 29.4 minutes per. Take out the blowout wins and he averaged over 30. Can Cody play 30 minutes per game @ the 4? He was in essence our backup 5 last season as that is where he got most of his minutes. We had 3 centers in the rotation last year and should again this coming season--Rob, Cory, and JM. PF is the issue. We've got Cody and ??? We really need GG to be able to step in and give us 10-15 minutes per game @ the 4. Can Rob play some 4? I'd really hate to see us play Dwayne at the 4 as he is a match up nightmare @ 3 but undersized @4. Jared Drew seems like the X factor. His dimensions are Jon Smith 2.0 but he also has an outside shot. I disagree with the suggestion that Drew redshirt. I read somewhere a few months ago that he was up to 210#. Let's hope he is up to 215 by next spring. We need a highly mobile 4 for those nights when the opposing team has a long, lanky 4 that Cody can't guard. GG might be that guy but he might not. Drew gives us a backup plan @ 3 & 4.GG - Who knows. I would love to see him battle Cory for PT. By what little I've seen, looks like a good athlete and probably our strongest player. Great to hear he is doing so well in the classroom. Could have a bright future.

I didn't intend for the topic to spin on for so long, only to voice disagreement with statements to the media about our players. Let's all agree to just to let this thread die.
-
Hey FDL, if you expect every fan to kiss the coach's ass when he does something disagreeable, then count me off the bandwagon. Great season by Rick. No question. But it does not change the fact that what he is saying to the media about our players is flat out wrong. Why he does it, god only knows.Don't like Rick saying our players can't play professionally? Get off the ###### bandwagon. If you think his comments to ESPN are going to hurt Conklin's chances of playing overseas, you are delusional. If a team from Europe calls Rick will give BC the highest praise ever.
JJ, ask BC's parents how they feel about Rick, since that's what you're so worried about. I'm positive that their response won't be near as negative as yours.
-
I care and more importantly the players and their families care. Don't publicly demean your players. It's a simple concept based on mutual respect between the players and their coach. Nothing good comes of it.Who cares?
-
Rick said Cody and Rob were soft in the same ESPN radio interview on Mike and Mike wherein he said Conklin will never cash a check from playing basketball. The point may be somewhat true about Cody and Rob but for the life of me I see absolutely no benefit to making such a statement to the national media. Say that privately to the kids if you feel it necessary but don't embarrass the kids on national radio.I agree completely jjray. Danny Brown played professional basketball. You don't need to be a superstar to play professionally somewhere.
During an interview recently RM just flat out said Cody and Rob are soft. I'm sure he has plenty of harsh words for them in practice but I don't see why he has to say things like this publicly. He's a brilliant basketball mind but doesn't have the greatest social skills in the world.

I've probably ranted on this topic too much already but I finally found the quote from Bernie Miklasz that set me off--
"These Billikens will never play in the NBA, collect a dollar from a pro basketball league or be celebrated for their showy offensive theatrics on ESPN SportsCenter."
http://www.therepubl...COLUMN_7539638/
Bernie is a good reporter. He might not know college basketball but he traveled with the Billikens to Columbus and most certainly spoke with Rick Majerus while there. I am confident Bernie got the "never collect a dollar from a pro basketball league" quote from Rick. Those are exactly the same words Rick Majerus uttered in regards to Brian Conklin on national radio. Apparently Rick said the same thing to Bernie in reference to the whole team and Bernie, not understanding that Rick was blowing smoke out his ass, printed it. Don't publicly demean your children. Never. These players are Rick's kids. He needs to be careful about the accuracy of what he states to the press about his own players.
-
I have no doubt Rick loves Conk. My point is he needs to stop talking down the talent on his own team to the press. Do it in the locker room if you please but NOT ON NATIONAL RADIO. It was fine when he first arrived and the point may have been to lower fan expectations. We find ourselves in a different place. It'S pure bull**** to say we have no pros on our team and people like Bernie Miklasz don't know enough about college basketball or have not seen the Billikens enough to understand Rick is talking out his ass when he says such things. So Bernie writes an article demeaning our program as the little engine that could all the while clueless to the true talent level we possess ... and augmenting the public perception that we throw out a bunch of stiffs on the court who just play with big heart to win. I'm sick of our players getting talked down by the media. Majerus aids and abets this bull****. Please stop it coach.I see your point, but as one of the ring leaders of the Majerus brigade, I feel obligated to step in. When RM says stuff like BC had no other D1 offers and he is not a pro, yes he is stretching the truth, but I think the angle he is coming from is that this is a guy who has truly maximized his potential. I view it as RM's way of praising him for becoming an all-conference player when he is not the most athletically gifted. RM loves the narrative of the underdog and the overachiever.

Roy is now a Rick Majerus apologist? Hell hath frozen over. Go back and listen to the recent Mike and Mike interview. Rick very distinctly says that Conklin is done playing basketball, that he would NOT cash a paycheck playing basketball and has to move on in life. That's just plain stupid. What would you think if you are a European club considering signing Conklin and you hear his respected college coach say this? Rick talks in hyperbole. I get that but just wish he would stop with the negative hyperbole about our own players. There is no point to the exercise of talking down your own players to the media.when rickma says "we have no pro players" he is likely talking nba pros.
-
Sorry, your analogy doesn't hold. Conklin has the ability to play in Europe. Rick keeps telling the media he has no pro players on his team other than the fact that Cody may be able to play in Australia. Bernie wrote a column (that I can no longer find on the website) stating the same garbage--that SLU has no potential pro players on its team. It gives the media the perception that we are fielding a bunch of stiffs out there, which is not true as the Memphis and Michigan State games showed. MSU had no one to match up with Evans nor a guard as physical as Jett. I'm very tired of hearing the press bad mouth the talent level of our team ... and Rick's comments feed into this negative perception.I don't view this as bad mouthing his abalities... In all seriousness I view this as a father figure wishing for better for someone he loves. He thinks the world of Conklin and wants him to go forth using the abalities he learned in the classroom rather than on the court. He thinks a leader like Conklin should serve the world in a more fullfilling way than basketball. I respect Rick, even for the weird way he goes about it, caring for his players like this.
Its like how my Dad (a salesman) never wanted to me to go into sales... So I went to college and got a Poly Sci degree thinking I could change the world... Then I graduated. Then I went into.. sales...
-
I have to believe he could play somewhere in Europe at some level as an all-A10 player. I can't figure out why Rick keeps bad mouthing the abilities of his own players. He said yet again on ESPN that Conklin will never earn a paycheck playing basketball.I spoke with Conklin's mother and he intends to play in Europe based on our conversations
-
Coup d'etat baby!!! Larry is from Chicago. Maybe Loyola of Chicago needs a new president.I would have to think at this point if Leisure Suit Larry didn't want to give Rick an extension, Chaifetz would step in and lead the charge on the board for a new president.

Gottlieb likes us and Majerus for sure. As for picks, he also picked Belmont over Georgetown and Montana over Wisconsin, to name two. I though this picks, over all the others on ESPN and elswhere, were more shock-jock variety than real in parts.
Yeah, I also got the feeling Gottlieb was making picks for shock value during the Selection Sunday Show. It could be that the ESPN producers are moving him in this direction. Gottlieb had harsh words for North Carolina's chances of getting out of the regional in St. Louis without Kendall Marshall, and this became news in itself with the NC players reacting to what Gottlieb had to say. But I think Gottlieb is a bright analysts in any event.
-
Thanks for posting the link. That was Doug Gottlieb guest hosting on Mike and Mike. Doug is a big Rich Majerus fan. He picked us to beat Memphis and has promoted the A10 all season. He calls the A10 one of the "major" basketball conferences (meaning the A10 is in the same class with all the BCS leagues for basketball).

I believe Temple is only playing football in the BE next season then all sports in 2013-2014. Temple will be in the top 3 preseason for the A10 next year.preseason will look like this
1)SLU
2)st joes
3)X

Nice find. So Cullen Russo appears to be the target in the 2012 class in Iowa that Rick mentioned. Friedman is class of 2013.

Gotta like a booster with swagger.true story.... Friday at halftime i was waiting in line for the bathroom next to Chaifetz. The guy on the other side of him asks how long rick is under contact he says 'one more year'. guy then asks how long is he going to stay with us. Chaifetz replies 'however long I want him' then gives me a fist pound as I laughed in approval...... Badass donor right there boy

Good point on Crews. I was hoping he would stay and Whitesell would leave. Nothing against Whitesell but Crewes brings more to the table. Going forward we don't need 2 ex-head coaches on the bench with Rick. However, we do need a young, hungry asst. on the staff to go alongside Harriman. This is true about Harriman. Also, talking with Paul Eckerle on Saturday night he was saying how important Jim Crewes has been this season. Having Rick and Crewes on the bench for the X's and O's took the team to another level
katz has Bills near top 25
