  1. Not a huge fan. I feel like this puts us closer to a mid-major than major. Both have had extreme success lately, but I question there sustainability. George Mason is already fading away and VCU is one coaching move away from oblivion. Plus, we have both markets already covered. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

From the standpoint of the east coast schools, it makes geographic sense in that these two are expected to replace UMass and UNCC. The change more tightly draws together the east coast schools centering the conference around Washington, DC metro. Richmond is only 107 miles from DC (i.e., STL to Columbia), although the traffic is murder on that route. Philly isn't far from DC either. I'm fine with this move. But we need Bulter to replace Temple.
  2. Clagget, maybe; surprised if they give it to Tatum.

There are better coaches out there for this job, but the reality is that SLUH may succumb.

Clagget will suddenly get a couple of inner city athletes into the U-High every year w / need based schollies, and, just like that, SLUH contends for MO State in 3 yrs.

Why do you have to inject the race card before Erwin has even coached a season at SLUH? Before throwing out a racist slur, how about waiting to see what sort of team Erwin assembles over at SLUH? I'm very disappointed to read that comment on this board.
  3. What is the actual deal with Rickma's contract?

Tucci has been on the record saying Majerus has the option to extend it himself and I have heard the same from others. My guess is that an extension is not the problem for Majerus. I think that Majerus wants the contract extended while changing the terms of the deal.

+1 This. Remember how long Rick negotiated with Biondi after it became clear he wanted the job? I agree with Brian that coach is building leverage to alter the terms of the deal. This extension is probably the last coaching contract he will sign in his life. Charter flights may be the crux of the battle.
  4. Ideal situation if they can pay Brown 2mm a year and then find an associate head coach to take over in 4-5 years and pay him an attractive salary.

+1 It takes a boat full of money to do it this way but you could be right. Use Brown's name to lure in recruits while having a coach-in-waiting on the staff who will run the program and take over the talent assembled while Larry is the HC. You have to buck up for Larry Brown and the money it takes to bring in a legit coach in waiting.
  5. According to several tweets this afternoon, Swopshire is transferring to Northwestern for his final year of eligibility. Good for him, as he has the chance to get a year of school at a school of Northwestern's caliber out of the deal.

Best of luck to Jared. Great educational opportunity and he just might help them sneak into the NCAA tourney.
  6. SMU fan here.

Several media sources are reporing that you guys have nothing to worry about as RM is staying at SLU.

Good commentary on here, although some of the posters don't really know anything other than SMU is in Dallas (and not Ft. Worth as one poster thinks).

Overall, you guys were much more civil in your comments than the guys on the Marquette board when we were still trying to lure Buzz away from them. They had a pretty pi$$y attitude about the whole thing.

A lot of us would have been pretty excited about getting him down here, though. We haven't been to the Dance since '93. We'll have our arena updated in about 15 months thanks to a few generous booster donations, so the commitment is there as we head into the Beast. We have a few good recruits on board, along with a few freshmen who showed some flashes this year. So things are starting to head in the right direction (assuming that we hire a coach at some point, which some of us are starting to wonder about).

Either way, best of luck. Y'all seem to really like your coach, so you can rest easy it sounds like.

    - Junior

Best of luck to you Junior. My brother was a Horned Frog so I know you folks ain't in Fort Worth.
  7. No way we make the tournament if Rick leaves. Players will transfer and there will be too much unrest in general

The Arena will be half empty next year if they name Crews the HC.

Who is going to transfer? Seriously. None of the three seniors will transfer. Do you really expect these juniors (McCall, Evans, and Jett) to transfer? I find that unlikely. The two sophs won't be sought after in transfer so I don't see it happening. The possible player loss would be Loe. He'd have 2 years of eligibility and a commodity in transfer. That is why keeping Harriman would be key. We keep Harriman and we keep Loe. Now if we brought in a coach from the outside that the players didn't know and the entire coaching staff was fired then all bets are off. There will be significant transfers.
  8. RM leaves and we can safely say that SLU wasted $81 million dollars on the new stadium. And Chaivez is out his $10 million + he ponied up.

SLU will never be a contender. No respectable coach will ever come to SLU after the circus RM had to deal with from the AD and F Biondi. It must be nice that our AD thinks we have so many options that we can sit on our asses without locking up RM when he was begging for it.

A little over the top, don't you think? With or without Rick Majerus, I expect the Billikens to make it to the NCAA tourney again in the 2012-2013 season. We have too much talent on that team. We would need to a hire coach quickly so my expectation is that Crews gets the job if Rick leaves. We will need to pony up money to Harriman to ensure he stays. Make him the top asst if they have to. This would suck but it's not thermal nuclear war.
  9. My initial thought on this issue was that Rick was flirting with SMU to give F. Biondi a lesson on the business side of major college athletics. Now I'm not so sure. Can't believe, given his age and health, he would want to take on another rebuilding job and in Texas of all places. But this appears serious.

  10. Harry Carey did the games for many years from the late 1940's through the 1950's and possibly beyond. I've mentioned this before, but I can remember listening the Harry do the away games without being there. He would read the ticker tape and use crowd recordings as background. He still made it exciting to listen to.

In addition to Jack Buck, Joe Garagiola, added color for a period. I don't remember if it was for more than one season.

Harry was the voice of the Cards through the 1969 season.
  11. I'm surprised he had the time to do so considering most of his time was spent carrying ol dead air Jack Buck.

Beg to differ. Jack and Harry were an awesome combination. Jack was the straight man (Stan Laurel) to Harry's Oliver Hardy. The straight man is always underrated in these duos. Or perhaps your comment was sarcasm.
  12. Bob Costas was the TV guy for some of the SLU games back in the early Grawer years. I think he was before that as well but it was pretty odd experience walking into a younger Bob Costas getting makeup put on as a student before a game.

I remember when he did St. Louis Spirits games in the ABA in the 70's. I've heard him tell a few funny Moving Marvin Barnes stories. Was Costas doing SLU games at the same time he did the Spirits?
  13. I agree with you that the Kowal thing suggests we are not against the idea of bringing in a 1 year guy but I disagree that Majerus didn't see a significant need back when we originally talked to Kowal. While the incident hadn't occurred yet, it has later come to light that WR was having major academic issues and would likely be suspended for the 1st semester. I suspect RM knew this and that is why he wanted Kowal.

Agree. I believe Willie was suspended from the team (although still in school) at the time we were talking to Kowal and helping him get NCAA clearance.
  14. with all due respect, the circumstances with Kowal were very different.

The incident occurred less than two years ago. It was reported we talked with Kowal and his father but he hadn't been given a release so nothing could be done.

Willie and Kwamain hadn't been kicked out of school yet (when we talked with Kowal). I think the issue is always team need. If your point is that once Willie left the team in 2010 we had a greater need for a big than we do now then I agree.

  15. I have read these posts with interest because I wonder where all this talk is coming from. I have no direct inside information but I would be shocked if our staff is interested in Shopshire. I know they turned down a better player in the past who wanted to transfer here late in his career for the reason they did not want to disrupt the chemistry on the team.

The fact that we tried to take Sean Kowal under exactly the same circumstances as Swopshire pretty much blows up the argument that Rick would never make a move for a transfer with just one year of eligibility. I think it is all an issue of need. Do we need Swopshire? I won't second guess the coaching staff either way they have evaluated it in this instance because I have seen so little of Grandy and never seen Cory play the 4. We need another 4 besides Cody. If the coaching staff thinks we don't need Swopshire then so be it.
