kwyjibo
After a little puff piece about how all the athletes eat healthy buffet style meals thrice daily together in one hotel at the Junior World's we learn this: "Of course, things are not so tight at night... It has happened for athletes and escorts to roam the ...gyros places that are close to the hotel. On the other hand, the US team orders almost every night 17-18 pizzas from a globally known chain of pizza restaurants, which they eat along with the consumption of gallons of soft drinks." http://www.basket.gr/wcj2003/press.asp?id=402 This is somewhat of an aside but what is the state of sports nutrition// diet counseling in college/SLU these days? Endurance athletes in individualized sports (swimming, running, cycling, bowling ) have always seemed to be light years ahead of athletes in team sports that require endurance. Even when I play rec ball I follow a pretty tight set of rules before games. Are athletes counseled about nutrition effectively these days about peak performance? I really have no idea what the talk is and what the practice is but I think it is pretty important. You still occasionally read about bad practices by pro athletes (many of whom are operating on non-scientific customs) and I know nutritional information is very bad for the public at large (mountains of disinformation make it hard to figure out what is beneficial). SO I was just wondering where colleges are at. SLU has a good conditioning coach now right, I am guessing he keeps the teams in line. NashvilleBilliken
About 2 years ago, I was working for catering while i was still in school. We would be responsible for serving the team its meals before games. Generally, it was a chicken dish with potatoes and vegetables. Sometimes we would serve a pasta dish. As for the rest of the time, the players could be seen eating in the cafeterias...which doesn't exactly have the healthiest of foods. I remember Hienrich always being in the pizza line my sophmore year. However, I'm sure that we are getting on the kids about eating healthy. That is a very important part of staying fit and maximizing energy.
