OkieBilliken Posted April 24 Posted April 24 Good morning from the USTA Complex in Orlando. Starting my extended Billiken weekend at the A10 Tennis Tournament. SLU Men, sporting a 1-13 record, inexplicably won last night and will face top seed Dayton this afternoon. But first SLU women play this morning against VCU Lord Elrond and DirtyRican 2 Quote

SLU is 2 sports above the minimum to be Division 1 members and the university is going through budgetary issues. No on-campus facility, they have to rent both indoor and outdoor tennis facilities for practice and games, not to mention covering transportation. They replaced a head coach who got poached by Drake with a head coach whose highest credential is an assistant at Lindenwood from 2019-2022 and was out of college tennis before being hired. To me this has all the optics of giving up on a program. I don't believe they will add anything. Quote

Typical college golf squads number like 10 members. A coach, provide balls, shirts and pants, travel with only starters. Don’t need facilities except maybe a big room for a golf screen for winter practice. Quote

In all sports, players do not provide their own equipment. SLU tennis players aren't using their junior/high school racquets unless it's their choice, same with golf. Practice and match apparel is provided by Nike, that includes shoes. The bold is literally just describing tennis, framed as golf. They've had deals with Dwight Davis, Sunset Tennis Center, Creve Couer Racket Club, etc. its the same sh*t. Quote

I know you might think clubs are more than happy to have a school call their course their home but money is still money. We have tennis courts on site and the travel to and from a course is not needed. Now if you are a SEC team maybe some intangibles are worth it to a course. Quote
MusicCityBilliken Posted April 24 Posted April 24 My son played HS golf. They played 3p during the week (not a busy time), the CC gave them greens fees for free and they got access to the range that had free golf balls. Also, with Top Golf practically next door, they can maybe work out something on a off-peak arrangement during poor weather BTW: I caught the Bills Men's Golf Team (when we had one) at the CUSA tourney. It was at one of the casino courses on the Mississippi Coast back in the 2000s. Same course that hosts a annual Champions (senior) tour event. USM was the host school. I think we came in last but we were up against Houston, USF, Charlotte, Tulane, etc.. A10 would probably be a lot easier. Quote
willie Posted April 25 Posted April 25 I know it upset a lot of people when we canceled our golf program. Came out of nowhere. Had a couple of Irish kids if I remember. Was there a backstory? Quote

Usually a high school team finds a club that either the kids family belongs or the club has some connection to the team/school. I have seen where one club owner had their son on the team and another who graduated from that high school years before. Each school has their own specific situation that they work out. I also seen where the club is given free advertising on programs for other sports or even through the district. Like I said each situation is different. Quote

The first set was a gift and they didn't have the courtesy to let the family know. That was a long time ago, but really poor form. The second set is where the arena currently sits. Quote

I did not know about the first set of courts. I've always wondered how many courts you could fit beyond the outfield wall of the softball field. Or how many you could fit in Chaifetz with sport court in the practice gym and main arena. Quote

They were donated by a family who had a son that played tennis at SLU and passed away in the 70's. Quote

They sat just east of Grand Forest apartments. I'd love it if someone found those photos. Only fleeting memories of what they looked like. Since then SLU has played mostly at Dwight Davis in Forest Park but some at Sunset Hills and St. Clair among others in the metro area. Quote
