I was on the aisle in 115 with a front row seat to the mayhem. A few SLU regulars were yelling at the refs and Russell the entire game about his flopping for fouls. Eventually Russell's Mom had enough of the banter and headed up a few rows, down an aisle and in the face of a SLU fan. Within about 10 seconds the Russell family / posse swarmed with dogpiles ensuing and punches flying.

Trash family with a trash son. Nothing surprising.

What were the students actually yelling at Shulga?  He was the VCU Alpha for the last couple of minutes.  The chant in his direction was constant.  None of my group could understand it.

From what I've heard they were chanting "Eye brows" at Shulga when he was at the line. Didn't hear any Russia chant at least from the student section.

I watched the fight unfold on ESPN.  I completely agree. It took way too long for security to get the situation under control. The delay deflated the momentum the Bills were experiencing at the time. Reflected poorly on SLU nationally.

My theory on security is chaifetz areas never imagine with slus fan base something like this happening so the hired base on experience

And honestly, at most sporting events the most immediate first line of defense is not some intimidating former SEAL. The issue I would have is that the backup support did not move in faster and more effectively. Some of us have seen those folks operate in Memphis and they came quick to prevent a situation from getting really out of control and had a really well executed plan.

Suggesting that "attitude" could be an issue is irresponsible.  I know you may not have meant it to be but that is how it looks.

Mea Culpa.

Or is it possible that the Russell family "stood their ground"? I guess it depends on your perspective.

I know this will not be a popular take, but several reports on the radio this morning that some SLU fans were talking trash throughout the game. I'm not excusing the behavior of the Russell family either, as they say two wrongs, but they "had to deal with that" during the game too - middle aged men drinking heavily talking crap about their kid for two hours.

Again, two wrongs - but I think it's disingenuous to completely excuse the actions of a few of our fans.

I agree.  My first reaction was in the heat of the moment.  I think your take is reasonable as well.

I was at game and watched the AD just sit in his seat in 103 watching, hearing later on he sent his assistant female AD into that chaos. We couldn’t believe it. I don’t know how anyone can sleep at night doing stuff like that. She really could’ve gotten hurt bad. Those people weren’t messing around.

That's not accurate.  I sit in 102, and May took a moment to process what was happening and then bee-lined toward the incident.  If you don't believe me, you can see him on the floor between the VCU bench and the stands in Steve's video.

If you don't put people to control the crowd at the visiting bench area, then you are negligent.  As said before May is not what I would call someone who understands security.  He just doesn't want to be bothered.

I am pretty sure they were yelling "Flopper."  The fans were getting sick of VCU mauling us on our end and then flopping and throwing their heads back every time a Billiken defender got near them on the other end.  The student section was focusing on Shulga's flopping while others, like myself, were also upset at Russell.

Is it just me or is the “brawl” kind of a big nothing.  Seems like a slow sports news week so it’s a “story”

this seemed like a “fork in the road” type of win.  I remember after Wofford, I was starting to worry.  All is looking up.  There is not a team in this league I’m afraid of.

let’s go get that ncaat bid

Good post. I accidentally added wrong emoji and don’t know how to change it.

Actually Phillthy family. That's what the Mom's shirt said, Phillthy on the front and Russell 1 on back.

I have no reason to distrust this account.  That's actually what I suspected.  Like I said before, I was also yelling at Russell from 102 about his flopping.  That's not personal.  It's about what he was doing on the court.  If you are a family member at a game and someone is yelling personal, vindictive stuff about your child, that sucks, but you still don't start a brawl about it.  If the home fans are chirping at the refs and your kid about constant flopping during a tense game and that's the reason you and your family start a brawl in the stands and bloody up an elderly fan after dragging him down about 12 rows, that's just horrible.

That’s certainly fair and it sounds like there was some hostility all game, so even more reason there should have been more visible security with backup support ready to move in. I was more commenting on how comical some of the first line of defense type security can be at these stadiums.

Christ, at least go with Melee in Midtown or something else alliterative.

If we keep playing like we did and VCU goes back to normal, I could see a potential rematch for the A10 championship with them.

I do wonder if any of those were also yuri’s family. They are cousins.
