Billikens Open Practice: July 22

Recommended Posts

Building on my previous post, Schertz gains more steam as a candidate in early January as more people came to terms with the fact that Ford has to go and started taking harder looks at possible replacements. @thetorch was the first to put him on his list on January 5th and a few more come on board. Then 05 is already calling him "our guy Schertz" on January 23rd. Schertz starts showing up every time people make a master candidate list after that. By mid-late February, he's #1 on a lot of MBMs' lists.

I think WPB started hyping him on Twitter as early as November. I know they're the ones that alerted us MMP bozos that we needed to look at what the Indiana State coach was doing and we became advocates after watching clips of his offense.

Thanks for the correction on the timeline.  I should have said 9 months instead of 6 months. The greater overall point of my post was that it's never too early to think about how you're going to replace your coach when the need arises.  Shout out to MMP for bringing Schertz to our attention.

Nah, shout out West Pine Bills. They deserve all credit.

Yeah, as I said in my posts, it was WPB who led the charge on this one.

And I would expect the AD to have contingency plans for everything. I just don't think Schertz himself was a backup plan.

I’d guess all AD’s with a “hot coach” would also have a list of possible replacements in his top desk drawer. Coaches are like portal players today; have a good year and you’re a hot commodity. It’s all about the Benjamins and who can blame them. The Mark Fews and Randy Bennet’s of the world are oddities who value life style over bucks. I guess Dan Hurley might also be in that category but that remains to be seen. May was wise to put in Schertz’s buy out clause,  but $4-$5mm is chump change for most P5 programs these days and not really a deterrent. Best we can hope for is Schertz and family really like the STL community, and the school can come up with enough $$’s to keep him in place. Still, if I was May, I’d have my backup list close by.
And before everyone jumps up my arse for being a negative Nellie, I’d remind you this is SLU hoops we’re talking about and you should always be on the lookout for the unexpected.

WHO GIVES A FLYING FUOK IF SCHERTZ GETS US TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT AND LEAVES?!?!?!?! SLU gets all that sweet money from the NCAA and a fat check from whatever school lures him away.

What buyout clause? Where was this reported? Every contract has to be bought out for the full amount unless there is a smaller amount than the full value negotiated in said contract.

We should have hired a worse coach so we’re not worried about him leaving.

I genuinely can't believe we're still having this conversation. Did we not learn anything from harping on Ford's contract, how many years he had left and how much money he was going to get to walk? Not to mention that people here spent at least one offseason worried if he would get hired away only to have to buy him out of a contract that could only be described as "cement shoes". Coaches are hired to be fired, replaced, hired away. That's how it works. If you're already worried about him getting hired away before he wins you anything, you are just repeating May's mistake.

OK, so he did. Rounding his income for 2023 to $2.7 M and assuming he lives in MO and pays income taxes using "married filing jointly" rates he had to pay around $900,000 in Federal and State income taxes for 2023. This lowers his net after income taxes to somewhere around $1.8 M for 2023 which is not bad at all.

Yeah he can afford to add guac and bacon with that kinda money.

Good stuff from the AD of the year on the contract and using his skills/connections on this year's basketball schedule.

Some of y'all have a real loser's mentality and it shows.

Look, I agree at this point this is much ado about nothing. But when posters start with Elite Eight projections it leads to then what questions, or how do you keep him down on the farm once the bright lights of the P5 come calling. To think they won’t is denying the realties of present day college sports. If, big IF again, we make it to the tourney and then the second weekend, Coach Schertz’s star will rise like a hypersonic missile. He already was considered a top mid coach last year. And, I got the buyout from someone saying May slid that clause in there to discourage P5’s from pursuing him after we had a memo of understanding with him. As I said previously, I’d take a magical season along with the risk of losing him any day of the week. And I’d wish him the best if he left. But again, this is all just conjecture as of today.

I think what some may be referring to regarding the so called "buyout clause" is it was reported that the school hiring Schertz would have to pay some large fee to SLU which not part of the paying off the contract issue you are referencing.

Where was this reported? There was a rumor of a memorandum of understanding prior to the end of the ISU season and officially signing a contract. Last I heard of any "buyout clause".

Can't we just enjoy the ride and cross that bridge when and if we get to it?

Mea Culpa for ever bringing it up. Best to leave hypotheticals to oneself.

My prediction.

Schertz stays a minimum of 5 years.  We go to the dance 5 times in that span.

Me thinks if this were to happen, he’d be here longer than 5 years. I would think if he goes 2 for 2 or 3 for 3 he’s gone. Anything more than that he wants to see this out.
